The whole situation is just sad, imagine if they had focused more on smite & paladins instead of their other failed games..
paladins is dead atp rivals took all the players
PALADINS HAHAHAHA 😂😂😂
Smite has been focused on as much as you could expect. They have had TONS of employees. The issue is they don't have that many talented employees. It's a smaller company that grew way too much and hired people who don't belong there. The reason Smite didn't get bigger wasn't because they weren't throwing enough money at it.
If anything what you can complain about is that they weren't preparing and cooking smite 2 long enough to be ready so that this could be a smoother transition and smite 2 could be a much better game than it will be for years. But Smite 1 was suddenly dying much faster than they could have probably predicted even without announcing smite 2 so you can't fully blame them for that.
Dko is goated fight me
I've played hand of the gods and the one battle arena game they made. Both amazing concepts that they gave up on fairly quickly. I had hope for smite 2 only because it's the successor to their most successful game but I should've just taken note of their history with other IPs
Ever since this CEO was hired, Hi-Rez started going into many directions that were not good for the health of the game. Post-S5, each patch leaned towards high-quality, higher cost skins, many of which were put into chest rolls and "buy-everything" events. Patches went from $40 for everything to $100, $200, or even $300 for everything. Patch notes were in a constant rotation of Mage meta, hunter meta, tank meta, etc. And when everything seemed to balance out, they buff an item or god because they aren't used enough, causing multiple balance issues. Not to mention that several gods went without skins for multiple seasons and gods like Nu WA, Neith, Thor, Ymir, Thanotos getting multiple skins in one season. I've put over 250 Days into Smite, and I love this game, but I hate the fact that an alternative agenda was always driving the game, whether it was money, egos of higher-ups, or a combination of the two. This insane layoff was very foreseeable looking back on my history with the game. If Hi-Rez wants to survive, fire the CEO and put Hinduman at the top. At least he knows the game and cared about the players.
All the CEO is hired to do is boost profit margins. Typical CEO in corporations.
I cannot believe this all comes out when SMITE 2 feels like its finally hit its stride. I was as excited, if not more, for what was being added at the frequency now than SMITE 1's peak.
The problem I see is this all but destroys consumer confidence in everyone except the people who've been diehards since OG Smite. I think we all thought (with Hirez assurance mind you) that Smite was going to always be at the forefront of the company. Now that we know that even a game that carries the Smite title is on the proverbial chopping block, how are we supposed to justify supporting Smite 2, knowing full well that, if another game comes along that makes them more money, or Smite goes through a long enough lull, that they'll just drop it and move on to the next thing? Revenue from skins and other in game items will assuredly drop from this, as will player count. It all depends on where they go from here as to whether or not they regain consumer confidence and can bounce back financially.
This company is now literally make or break on the Smite 2 monetization.
You're right, no one is going to trust a company that had a GIGA-successful IP and somehow is back to where they were 10 years ago...
morphing jar
In my opinion while the layoffs do suck and alot of good people are gone.I don't think this will effect smite that bad luckily the game is in a really good state and as long as they keep that up we should be fine.Since there are a ton of devs still working on the game.
Agreed, for now atleast
as soon as skins get released and other paid things + events etc, money should rack up... hopefully anyway :D
forgot to add the 2..
Smite 1 is donezo thanks to the incompetent CEO
@@thatpersonwithoutear yeah, with Paladins development being shut down (not permanent) and Switch Smite being permanently stopping development. I think Smite 1 is just cooked.
@thatpersonwithoutear well yeah I wasn't expecting smite 1 to stay forever especially now that 2 is here.
Hopefully smite 2 continues to improve. It is such a tragedy that the decisions of the higher ups determine the fate of the game. This sucks so much, especially when Smite 2 was on an upward trend. Stay hopeful that someone competent will take over and we can recoup some of this lost talent.
Weak, Kurt, buddy. I feel like I grew up on ya man. I feel like I’m experiencing all this shit with ya and I’m… man I don’t even know😂 my brother and I have been playing smite for years at this point and have simple faded away from it a little with school and life getting busy. I hope you know that we will still always consult you for builds, tier lists, gameplay and all when we come back which I hope will be soon here. Thanks for the transparency as always. We’re all just here for the ride, whichever way it goes.
Side note and I know this is long (sorry) I think finding a kind of farewell smite one doc/compilation would be sick. Might help build some hype for getting the word out to potentially buyers of the game. Just an idea to kick around, maybe spread to other folk in the community. I can’t do much to help, but I’m in school rn and creatives are always looking for projects. Just a thought. Love the content as usual my man, hope the wife and kids good. -huhstrange
Stew has failed on so many different occasions idk how tf he's still around. The only reason he would still stick around is because of the money, because all his ideas are pretty clearly shit based on all his failures
I don't know how to feel. A ton of us have been trying to warn Stew about the issues Hirez was going to fall into for years, and it just feels like he hasn't cared about the wellbeing of his company for a long time.
It's a bigger deal than that, it's called consumer confidence. Who wants to drop money on skins/gems etc. When the company just laid off 1/2 thier workforce. With a game like Smite you expect it to be around awhile so you get the return on your money. Now people don't know if the company is being sold, if the game support will remain high, if not shut down in a year because the company goes under. Players have no confidence in spending hard earned money.
Agreed, it also pushes new people out of the community who are interested. Who wants to get into the community if this is all you see about it when you start or enter it
Omg who did that fade 😂😂😂
Ninjas barber 😂
it looks terrible lmfaoooo
It feels like this scenerio was inevitable when smite 2 launched and the news that devs were being pulled from other games to work on smite 2
Sucks that it happened like this but im not surprised it happened at all
Weeknd, at the end of the. day... thank you for taking me and many others along for this journey. Regardless of the outcome with SMITE, you are an amazing content creator and I will continue to watch and support. Over A DECADE of great gaming moments and I owe that to you and Hi-Rez.
Idk man I think this is not gonna end well. I love SMITE & Paladins but this company is one of the worst in gaming. (Don’t talk about the devs but the rich ppl up)
Speaking of Paladins i really loved that game it sucks that it failed. I personally thought it was better than overwatch and while i do like marvel rivals, i get bored after like 2 games. Granted i havent played paladins in years but my time with it was amazing
These will be permanent stains on HiRez/Smite’s legacy. Hopefully the skeleton crew that still remains can get Smite 2 to a point where it’s profitable enough to bring these things back. They got all their eggs in this basket now. It has to work or we’ll all lose this game. Been playing since late s2 on the Xbox and moved to PC. Came back to Smite 2 after not playing consistently for a couple seasons. Hate to see it
It’s hard to say. How are they going to keep updated good and consistent, a new character every week, add onto that importing already existing characters to Smite 2. While producing skins for revenue
I will 100% continue to play. The game has come an incredibly long way and in my opinion is significantly more fun, even more fun than Smite 1.
The devs went hard and have done an amazing job.
I have hope for our community and the future of Smite 2.
MOBAS are inherently competitive. Losing the competive edge will affect the playerbase IMO.
At least con , arena and assault player count i dont think will be affected as much if any.
I haven't been playing Smite 2 due to being caught up in other games. Im someone who used to play tons and tons of Smite 1 on Xbox and even still have the Xbox beta player icon. Seeing this happening to Hi-Rez and Smite makes me want to come back to the game to support it because I don't want to see the game fail because it is a genuinely good game.
But they doubted us when we said they killed the golden goose with killing Smite 1 and having a full year of nothing burger. Hirez is ran by a fool at the top. It doesnt matter anymore, i now feel indifference now, and a lot of other vets feel the same. They screwed us over, from pro league, to content. Smite 2 was the way right? 😂
Btw if epic takes over, the game is dead for sure. Epic is a terrible publisher.
Lol, there was no way in the world smite 1 and smite 2 was going to co-exist. It’s literally the same game and smite 2 stole the playerbase 💀
In an alternate universe they don’t fuck up Realm Royale and smite 1 continued with big esports until Smite 2 was fully ready for launch. Hirez has mastered the art of self deleting their profits
One thing that hurt the community I think was the top-liked and active devs on social media went silent for about 2-3 years before the announcement of smite 2. It made it seem like they were giving up on smite and on the community.
The fact that this surprises people is what gets me, this company has a history of bad calls and even worse management. Better hope smite 2 holds up as much as people think it will. Because otherwise thats bye bye hi rez, andni gotta be honest smite 2 is just ok atm. Maybe after it comes out fully it will be alot better, but right now it Honestly feels like an akward smite 1.5. I also understand that this opinion is not popularly shared.
It really sucks how this happens right when Smite 2 was really popping off. It really takes the wind out of the sails of Smite 2. Why now of all times? Why even do it at all when Smite 2 is doing so well? Make it make sense.
Peaking 10k players is Not popping off. Not anywhere near what the owner wants. Thats why all these layoffs happened. Miss management from the top.
Another banging hot hair cut!🎉
I hope we stay strong as a community! And we find clarity of our future with smite!
And we can't thank everyone genuinely loving the game. ❤
the mushroom cut.
Crazy how successful these games have been at release just to have changes that completely ruin them. Smite has similar terrible changes in its history but the community is resilient because there’s basically no alternative that scratches the same itch
I just find it so sad thinking of lermy on stream during titan talk talking about rama only for the next day to be let go.
Exactly. That was my biggest thing too. Titan talk into layoff was insane
@dougcarver3477 on god dude she was so excited to show off rama
Aggro designed one of the next new (non-Smite 1 transfer) gods that will be released and now he doesn't get to see its culmination
I mean I feel like epic buying hi-rez is probably the best thing that can happen. They did help (and really hurt in some ways) rocket league. But they have a massive crowd to market to. That was always what I thought smites biggest issue was, it felt like they never put any money into trying to expand the audience for smite. They put all their money into those crappy other games you mentioned.
Idk if i want it in epics hands. Do we have any other options? 😂
@@-8h-epic is quite literally best case scenario. Buying hirez and keeping all the same devs would save the game and then some.
smite 1 was so good. Season 9 kind of sucked but they could have recovered. Smite 1 tournaments were tons of fun to watch, great casting team, great pro players, and a great player base. Sad that those days will be gone forever. I think Maui release was my favorite time of Smite
People can say “oh I don’t want x company to buy it, they’re bad” but basically any company buying it would be better for Smite at this point because otherwise the game is just gonna die.
There’s no universe in which no one buys Hi-Rez or the Smite IP and the game still goes on to have a long healthy lifespan. Either someone buys it and they keep it good, someone buys it and they make it bad, or no one buys it and it dies. Those are the options.
Yeah, it's pretty clear HiRez is nosediving. Cutting out every other game to focus on the game without any monetization, and still isn't done, all to STILL have a second round of layoffs? This is life support AT BEST by industry standards.
literally the only chance they have is to rush Smite 2 into a sell-able state and hope enough people buy things to keep HiRez afloat. But at that point, there is no guarantee that the game will be good or serve as a viable replacement for Smite 1.
Dude i played smite for 11 years and im loving smite 2 but seeing people that i personally like a lot like Jmac Lermy Agrro etc. is crazy i cant believe people are being let go for money thats BS and i hope those that are left are doing the most they can!
This is so sad to see. Been playing smite on and off since the early beta days and smite 2 nearly lost me until CA5. Finally got back into it and was optimistic but this… just disheartening for HiRez. Hoping something brings them back to life but also feeling a very strong pull to just find another game at this point
A note about realm royale:
Yeah hirez may have fucked it up, but it was never REALLY doing that well. They pumped a ton of money into paying some big name streamers to play it (ninja was one iirc and that was when he was literally the biggest streamer on earth) then as soon as they stopped and the streamers stopped playing, the numbers dropped like a rock.
Smite 2 is so much better now when alpha first dropped it was atrocious, I cant believe they realeased it in that state! Its actually a good game now.
Like a lot of people are saying, i also believe the game is in a really good state. It sucks that all these amazing people lost their jobs, and my heart goes out to them, but we should continue to support the game and the part of the team that still remains. I'm sure that now they're probably under a lot of pressure with the team being WAY smaller, so we should continue to provide feedback so they can continue to improve the game as they have been since last year. Yes i was there when it sucked but they basically flipped a switch and kicked things into gear. Since then, its been a really enjoyable time on the game.
Also, I really want this game to do well and I will support it. But, if you find yourself not wanting to play the game after all this, i understand. But, please don't drag down others who still want to play the game and enjoy it.
They just didn’t even do anything with DKO and that was a really fun game
I really hope thus game doesnt die... its my go to game and been hooked ever since my friends laughed at me for putting tank items on scylla...
Wish they had a titan talk today
TBF to these guys, Tribes really oughta be a priority. Not the companies fault their player base is lackluster
This is an excellent video. Kurt the voice of reason and perspective in this situation. Honestly hope epic buys it at this point, as unlikely as it is
It's never a good sign for the future when a company suddenly lays off nearly 50% of their active staff
If Stew really cared so much about the employees and the future of the company he'd step down and let someone who knows what they're doing make the company profitable
I mean the games development is mostly done now in terms of features. It’s really common to see layoffs after a games launch and a change in direction. They just feel that it’s best to shift direction on the game as a whole and cut off what they feel is unnecessary. Right now if I had it my way as well I’d start by cutting off the small games they made specifically to profit of off hype like paladins and rogue company and just focus on smite cause it’s the only money maker they’ve got. I get that it’s people livelihood and jobs but at the same time we don’t know what’s really happening just assumptions. And if it’s a change in direction with more focus on smite and a better quality game like we’ve been getting over time I don’t see an issue.
I've been on the fence about upgrading my founders pack. I'm planning on going ahead with it. I'm also going to buy Diamonds despite not needing them right now. I want this game to live.
😂
As a long time Rocket League player I'd just like to point out that Epic isn't exactly all sunshine and rainbows. Could it possibly be a boost in the short term? Yeah, definitely. When epic originally took over RL and made it free to play the playerbase skyrocketed. For the first couple of weeks or so there was around 2mil concurrent players which is crazy. However, after that Epic basically left RL to just die a painfully slow death. Never adding or updated anything besides way over priced skins. They set the prices so much higher than Psyonix (the original owners) had set them. Then just left the game as it was for years. When they did change the game it was only ever to remove things like trading for example. Which just killed the game even faster.
Rocket League was in a much better state when Epic bought it compared to what Smite is now so I'd be worried that Epic would just kill Smite completely in a couple of years. Obviously RL and Smite are different games, it'll be a lot easier for Epic to sell skins in Smite than it was in RL so it could be a good thing for Smite but this is just a warning from a playerbase that's already been almost killed from Epic.
At the end of the day Epic is just a massive greedy corporate company that already has it's golden goose in Fortnite. That's what Epic care about. They just basically used RL to try and get more people to play Fortnite, not the other way around. From experince, I wouldn't expect them to do anything differently with Smite. Obiously it's not like we are the one's who get to make that decision anyway, but I'd just like to say to not get your hope up too much over Epic.
They NEED monetization within smite 2. Ik they have the wandering market coming out but I’m sure smite 1’s revenue is trickling at this point. For longevity of the company there is no money being consistently brought in. Epic buyout is hopeful but I don’t see it happening
I can continue the play the game because its fun, but i can't justify putting any money into it knowing it might all be gone at some point.
Same
EVERY game is gonna be gone at some point
OG season 1 player here. Game is cooked unless they sell. I have already moved on to other games and won’t be coming back. Without an esports the game is untra cooked.
Im just gonna wait for the titan talk on monday and go from there, think the game will be fine just slower idrk
They made another post on reddit with an update on the progress of Smite 2
I love that EA caught a stray in this video
I love the new hair. Big ups to the chef.
Game dead? No. Is it hurt for awhile? Definitely. Can it be still be saved? For sure.
They just got to play the hand dealt right now and try to find the light at the end of the tunnel. As far as content creators, ive already seen some say theyre leaving it behind, which is fine to each their own. I think they need all the support they can get right now, ill say this much, i followed you awhile back during the ending seasons of smite and your helped get me into smite and i have enjoyed it tremendously. No matter what choice you decide going forward definitely gonna stay subbed and watch the content.
I enjoy playing smite and will keep playing till something else that I enjoy more comes along. Hope hirez can turn it around but if not I had fun while it lasted.
Coming from someone looking at a layoff myself, shits rough. Prayers for those let go and their families
The problem is consumer confidence. Its non existent. Even smite 1 players dont want to bother learning the new game because its a on fire.
Im not spending a single dime after whaling Smite 1 and not getting shit for it. I literally owned all skins except for like 2.
I just dont understand where this comes from. Fineokay mentioned it aswell and it was my first thought; the game is exceeding expectations, people are playing it and enjoying it, the hype train is huge. All of this the patch before the shop gets introduced? This is like GGG firing a third of their staff right now after the huge success of poe2. It makes no sense.
They aren't making enough money, thus, layoffs happen. It's really that simple right now
I personally don't think a game like Smite needs hundreds of employees in order to function. I can imagine a lot of people (not all) were just sitting around with nothing to do.
An idea, here what if the smite content creators came together using some of their donations from Twitch and perhaps a go fund me to raise a prize pool for an online tournament. In of which they could participate or be a caster. Teams could require a minimum rank or play through a set of prelims depending on size.
I don’t know who didn’t see this coming. Hi Rez has been losing money and operating in the red for years because there is no ROI. The viewership is horrible, there’s no live events to try and make profit off gate, sponsors aren’t offering CPM to smite and to be honest, the spectator experience of smite is horrible. Smite needs to go grassroots
Stew is kind of a coward how he handled this situation. Id take back nearly any of the talented people they fired anyday if it meant him stepping down
In what universe are they losing so much money, but they think it was a good idea to do a gigantic LAN tournament at a venue in Vegas for a game that was literally JUST ENTERING its open beta 90% of the way through the event?
Killgoon also did tweet they will eventually have to go to a god every other week at some point, which is reasonable
I wouldn’t mind cranking 90’s on Ymir. I think selling to epic, and keeping the devs would be the best outcome overall. Guess we’ll see though
All we can do now is pray for the best scenario and wait
As someone that only had console and bought god pass and some skins, i lost all of it when moving to pc. That made me not play on pc for years now. I had no legacy gems for smite 2 and even then im loving smite 2. Havent gotten the god pass as its not worth it now and is a ridiculous amount of cash for the limited god pool.
Welp people can play predecessor. Omeda is smaller and doesn't have as much stuff but it's gameplay and graphics are great. It's still adding and figuring everything out because it was a fan made studio to remake a version of paragon.
The same thing happened when Titan forge took over
I am not goin to expecting transparency going forward they don't have a lot to gain from it and when we start to see the weekly god ports stop, them saying that before it happens could just lead players to stop buying god packs or diamonds and they will want to keep those purchases going right up to the last moment before they put the game in maintenance mode like smite 1 was the past year.
Once I got my first ban(7 days)- banned for being rude to a troll…I knew smite 2 and smite were going to die.
I do everything because of you, Kurt.
Imagine if they put that money back into smite or its esports and advertised it hella hard just saying it fits a niche alot of ppl would like its just not well known
Smite 1 not getting updates foreshadows the end of this. Smite 1 is the oldschool Runescape/ Classic WoW for Moba's. Smite 2 is at least 2 years out from being ready and HiRez doesn't have that Revenue/Time. I'll just have to hope a Resurgence in line with the others happens or salute the good times had.
I agree, I thought the plan was for Smite 1 to help bring in revenue until Smite 2 was closer to the state where Smite 1 is. This alternate plan seems terrible. I think the issue is that Smite 2 was something that should have happened a few years ago before the company reached this point.
I called it when they announced Smite 2
I just hope the playerbase can get past this so Smite can still exist, because the people who were laid off still want Smite to succeed, and I'm with them, that being said; Stew should really resign or go hands off, because Smite at this point only dies if the playerbase is so demoralized they don't want to play anymore, if you've been with the game from the start, if you stopped enjoying the game but want to see it exist, and if you're a skin whiner, you want Smite to exist and succeed and you can't let any petty reason blind your reasoning and actively wish for the game and dev teams downfall.
A lot of folks are not gonna invest in a game ran by incompetent fools. Specially when those folks spent way too much money in the first game just to get the middle finger. Hirez cannot keep the boat afloat. They shot themselves in the foot killing Smite 1 so early and letting the player interest die in a year. Showing time and time again YOU CANNOT HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIREZ
As someone who played all of hirez games , its a given they fail at some point sad to say some of them could have been great
This sucks and I have my fingers crossed, but damn... It's true btw. I play b/c I watched you play during the first Avatar Xover.
Best of luck, Kurt. I'ma watch you regardless.
Even if the game improves and they make the gameplay solid with new gods and cool items, without having a reason for the top players to stick around, like esports, the competitive part of smite will just die out imo. That goes for the rest of the smite player base. Nothing to work for, just a fun game but no publicity and no reason to get better at. So we’ll have to see what they plan on doing but if the top players find other games and streamers get into other games, the people will follow and smite just dies out.
The lay offs are bad, But I will be honest. For the size of SMITE 2, the smite team was overloaded. laying off the seasoned team? Shit idea. and bad call that can quickly turn the game for the worst. In other point, A lot of the laid off people are from the studios that worked on Paladins and RoCo within Hi-Rez. Aggro and Lermy imo are the worst 2 drops from this round.
Lol weaken, you’re delusional. This game is dead with 50 people playing in a ranked que. Keep your blind fans praying that this game will somehow fix itself.
Even if the game dies I’m still asking for xing tian jungle
the cope in this video is insane
Facts are only cope to the unintelligent and emotionally angry
@@Weak3n Eh, saying that Smite 2 is a good game isn't a fact-it's an opinion
Guess all the people who said smite 2 was DOA and would be dead after 6monthes was correct huh? Anyone that bought stuff in smite 1 or paladins needs to start getting refunds before hirez goes completely bankrupt.
Man losing e sports really sucks
end of vod is right, game is fun rn and i wish i didnt know that they might not have the dev team to keep making it fun. if its bought by EPIC id honestly be pissed and stop playing for a few weeks and like you said realize the player base shot wayyyyy up and theres noobs to prey on in casual lobbies and itll be fun again plus theyll have the money to support it and actually if you think about it EPIC doesnt own any decent MOBA's this ones free like they made rocket league which they bought surely for the esport i could see it happening
Is it normal for a company of their size to try to put out so many new games when your success rate is what it is? Would love to hear someone with experience to break down hi Rez as a company. Just seems like weird timing mixed with bad forecasting to lay off half your staff this close to the official release of your most successful game. Idk
actions speak louder than words.
I honestly believe that smite could’ve been as big as lol and dota. but they just fucked it up and i honestly have very little faith they won’t fuck it up with smite 2. very disappointing and sad… cause i loved the game.
Sounds like Hi Rez is about to employ bullshit AI instead of actual talented people
I can't help but notice that the employees started at 420 and they just laid off 69, feels like we're getting trolled
Well there’s your issue. Why would you want a CEO who isn’t in it for the money
Hirez is probably shutting down in the next few years. Smite and Paladins were the only 2 games keeping them afloat and now they are both doing poorly. Major layoffs is the first sign.
Oh well. They did it to themselves. 😊
Yo deadlock or predecessor?
Deadlock it’s actually good
I played smite. Now I play predecessor
Your title seems super negative which might not be the case... But i cant say these layoffs are made to make sure they can actually pay the rest of the of team.
Esports doesn't hook casuals at all. This frees up capital
You calling smite 2 good still is so funny because if it was good it wouldn't be failing.
I dunno how all of those were failed games though haha i actually had so much fun playing smite/realm royal/ paladins hahaha i always wondered why I couldn't play realm anymore
knowing now that this is the same company that made paladins... Not surprising that smite2 is in a bad condition now. Paladins while great, imo better than overwatch. Never had any updates lack of player to dev communication. Zero effort to make the game look better, it came out in 2018 and look border line trash. Couple years down the road its literally imposable to find a single lobby. This being said there are games out there with almost no player base yet the games still exists , Naruto storm connections on steam 1,600 all time, only 100+ sum at any given time and a all 24 hr all time of 146 players. 2 years later can still find a match whenever you want might take 2-5 min better than nothing tho
