    Hey Steve, after you guys mentioned the Screamin Eagle option on the ESP, I double checked mine and sure enough it's not checked. If I were to install a torque cam and SE tuner would the warranty implications be that the failure wouldn't be covered at all or just that the cost of the SE part (say it was a bad cam that then did other internal damage) wouldn't be covered?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  8 місяців тому +5

      Good question. The cam would have a 1 year (parts only) warranty that wouldn’t cover other parts in the bike or labor. If you want to be covered you do have the option of cancelling your warranty (receive a prorated refund applied to your loan balance) then buy a new warranty with the SE coverage. If you’re still under your first two years of ownership the warranty is considered “extended eligibility” and is only slightly more expensive than if you bought it when the bike was brand new. If you’re outside your 2 year manufacturers warranty than it becomes an “anytime warranty” and costs more. If you do this make sure you purchase the coverage BEFORE you install the parts. Also make sure the parts are installed at a dealership who RECORDS THE PARTS ON YOUR SWR (sales warranty registration).

    Just tell the state of California that your stock exhaust is a baby and that you’re just aborting it. They won’t bat an eye and you can get whatever you want.

    • @johnmccormick6689
      @johnmccormick6689 6 місяців тому +2

      Be sure to ask if there’s a Govt subsidy program for the stock abortion/transition. You’re transitioning and that’s critical for everyone to recognize… There should be a CARB program to help transitioned bikes Ride together, you know with like special lanes (splitting) and stuff like that.

    Glad I don’t live in Cali but will say Matt and his dealership seem absolutely top notch! My 07 RKC I bought new when I came back from the sandbox (OIF). 100k+ later and not many HD parts in motor any longer but it still checks all the boxes without the dealer involvement. Dyno done, cams, new cases and DD7 etc etc but it’s all mine, no MoCo to be involved. Ride safe.

    Felt Heat is another very important reason not listed in the video that would definitely have me lean towards full exhausts and I live in CA. I wear earplugs and I can definitely tone down the sound (smaller diameter pipes), etc. 100 degree + weather is tough to ride in period, but 100 degree + weather with your right leg cooking from the engine heat is the worst thing ever for me.

    Pretty crazy how much California has Harley dealerships hands tied with their abysmally slow CARB approval rate. 2 model years of bikes that have zero performance support of Screamin' eagle parts. It has to be more frustrating for you guys than even the customers. California is costing Laidlaws and all CA dealers tens of thousands of dollars in unsold parts and labor because of it.

    I have an 18 Heritage 114 with slip-ons that I bought used from the dealer. It has the Screaming Eagle tuner on it and came with the full warrantee. I love the power with the low down torque. If I want something with high end power I will ride one of my other bikes built for that. I don't think I would like my Harley if it was built for max power because of how I ride and the stock power delivers a lot more smiles. If I ever buy a touring model I don't even know if I would add slip-ons. I feel like it would get old over a long ride.

    Fuel sender warranty claim was denied at my dealership due to aftermarket tuner (Dynojet). Now my fuel gauge shows half full when I fill up. This is a known issue with M8 Softail, that the float sensor can fail, but dealer claim failure is due to tune. Dynojet had never heard of their tunes causing this issue.

      You should ask the dealer to see the manual review from Harley Davidson. Matt talks about your bike warranty is at risk is but goes through a review. You may have a lazy dealership that didn’t submit it. There would be a written review from HD corporate. If the dealership won’t show you find another dealer.

    From articles I have read, my understanding is, you can install whatever part you want by whoever and not void your warranty. Only if that particular part is negatively associated with problems is when you are out of luck. Harley has been "corrected" by Federal law that you do not need to be bound by Harley parts under warranty.

      Exactly

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  8 місяців тому +2

      This is true. (Magnuson-moss Act) However you increase your chances of warranty claims being denied when your engine is running outside of HDs specs that have been tested by them (aftermarket tuner). The likelihood of this being detected is higher through the assistance of digital technicians. In this video our goal was to explain the most common occurrences of “particular parts negatively associated with problems” as they relate to exhaust upgrades. Also, they best way to avoid particular parts being negatively associated with after market parts.

    I just bought a 2024 street glide from a dealer in my state and I don’t live in California (but next door. Hint hint). I want to add street canons just for the sound as I’ve always run them on my Harleys. I have received conflicting information on slip ons. The dealer says no need for an ecm calibration as long as I don’t change the air filter. Harley’s website claims they don’t fit my 2024 Harley. Only the more expensive titanium slip ons which seem to require a stage one set up. This is all very confusing. I just want some mellow sound, that’s all. Can you help sort out the confusing stories? I'd be curious to know your thoughts. Thanks.

    I have always driven with open pipes Night Rod Special Breakout, but I don't want this anymore, I sometimes drive to Germany and they are very strict there, and too much is too much noise, now on my road glide anniversary I have slipp ons from Bassani and These are a little louder, but nice sound and not too loud, and I like it that way, and I don't have to worry about a police report
    to be honest, too much sound is outdated, it is better to have a quiet, deep, beautiful sound, this is much nicer

    I have a 2024 Road Glide that I am considering putting on a SP Concepts Turnpike exhaust and getting the tune from a Harley Dealer here in the state where I live (not California). I do plan on taking this bike on long trips and was wondering if either of you have any experience with this full exhaust and if it's so loud it gets annoying after riding for hours. The Turnpike exhaust is full length and comes out a little past the right saddlebag, if that makes any difference.

    In my experience, Harley’s need tuned right off the showroom floor because of the bullshit emission compliance, so you might as well do the exhaust and air cleaner and get it dyno tuned. It’s really stupid that Harley-Davidson doesn’t recognize the Power vision as the most optimal tuner as well. Also fuck California, Harley should just pull out completely, it would be their loss.

    I had a argument with my dealer service guy yesterday ... I wanted to put Tab mufflers with medium baffles on my 24 softail ( getting rid of the cats in the process) and they said well SE tuner won't encompass for the getting rid of the cats... And while itself won't void the warranty bike will run lean and if you burn a valve etc warranty won't cover it. I think they are full of shit and I'm kinda frustrated atm. I just wanted little more sound out of otherwise bone stock bike ( headers, air cleaner and tune left alone) ... What's your opinion on that. Thanks

      Things have changed. Since the Milwaukee Eight engines came out there is a now a physical tuner that is used to tune the bike (shown in video). The tuner does not stay on the bike but does get “married” to the bike so it can only be used on that one vin. Before the M8 there was just a download a dealer did.

    I tried to stay with the SE BCI tuner. First time out trying to auto tune, it bricked my ECM and forced me to tow it to a dealer. They were able to recover my ECM. I immediately removed the crap SE tuner, and went full aftermarket. WOODS 22XE, 5.5 injectors, S&S intake, Trask AC, D&D billet cat exhaust. I’ve put 5,000 miles with zero issues. It’s only my experience but aftermarket parts far outperform Harley SE parts.
    And the warranty? Buy a factory manual, learn how to repair your own machine if you want to play. Pay to play….

    I’m really glad I watched this video. I wanted to possibly get my next bike from Laidlaws, but hearing the part about buying a California bike and bringing it back to another state can cause issues with parts and stuff made me rethink that idea. I’ll have to go ahead and get my next bike locally.

    I was hoping you’d talk about the wide band sensors and whatnot can help with. I’m considering an S&S carb 2/1. I have a 2019 RG Spec. Currently running a stage 2 torque cam SE tuned at dealer and an open header with KhromeWerks muffs..insert installed to compensate for reverb/backpressure. I can’t stand the heat on stock header but I do understand the cat is further back in the S&S and has the larger 18 mm O2 sensors etc. I do believe we can still get stage 3 work at Cali dealers right?

    Thanks for the great information! I have a 2011 Ultra with Vance & Hines monster ovals (slip ons) and a Harley stage 1 air kit. The local shop (non-Harley) installed a non-Harley tuner as well. What cam can you recommend for my bike to give me a bump in torque/hp at the 2.5k-4K RPM range? And...should I also go with a Harley Pro Street tuner? Thanks.

    A lot of good info… I’m not in California…what are your thoughts on a rinehart slimline duals exhaust from headers back to their slip on 4.5” mufflers…they have one with bronze accents that would look good with my bike…should I also get the Harley tuner with that? And is back pressure an issue ? Or would a tune at the dealer address that? On My 2022 street glide st? Would this increase performance at all? And would getting added warranty with SE be beneficial?

    Hey guys, I have a 2019 softail slim. I bought it used, so no concern for warranty, I live in Oregon, takes care of the California thing. Shortly after I got it, I wanted to make it a little louder, as people still have a hard time seeing me even though I wear a bright white full-face helmet and a bright orange vest when I ride. After doing a little research on UA-cam I decided to go with Vance and Hines 2 into 2 big radius, Vance and Hines A02 air intake and a FP-4 tuner. My question is, how much, if any legal hassle could I be subjected to traveling in and through California? BTW You're the reason I choose the Softail Slim thanks I absolutely love the bike.

Thinking of replacing exhaust on my 2022 street glide st with header back exhaust by rinehart slimline duals with 4.5” mufflers… you don’t need to comment specifically on this exhaust system but our thoughts on back pressures in exhausts like this and how it may affect engine life and if performance would be improved along with Harley tuner…I’m not in California

Could I not just take the bike across to Nevada or into Oregon, etc.. Get the work done outside of Cali? Just curious how this works?

    This is why the EPA needs to be defended. The rest of America doesn't need to fallow all the bs laws from CARB when our motorcycles will NEVER see the cracked up crappy California roads in Cali.who would want to go to a state where they refuse to allow citizens of the United States to defend themselves when their crime ridden state. Mostly by the law enforcement, let alone the criminals.

    I just bought a 23 FXLRS. I do not live in CA. From what I understand the catalyst is in the mufflers not the head pipe. If I add slip on's that do not have a catalyst am I voiding my warranty? For clarification I was looking at the S&S Grand National race mufflers. No cat's.
    It's also my understanding that if I want the motor to run properly as far as air/fuel ratio it's best to add a tuner or have it tuned. This must be done with the Screaming Eagle tuner if I want to retain my factory warranty.

    What a crock of shit! Most of the the after market parts are designed to work with the bike you have, so if those said parts where installed properly and either a can tune or hand tune was done how would that affect warranty? For example my bike is a 2023 Road Glide Special and I purchased a full Rinehart exhaust! When I went to take the header pipes off the four bolts on the header flanges were nearly hand tight the bike has been touched by no one and has just over 2000 km, I shutter to think what else is loose or will break? I also am looking at a dyno tune with a cam swap so I guess I can kiss my two year warranty good bye? Why do we have after market parts then??? It seems to me this is a way for Harley to keep you paying the tax!!! Not going to happen here!

    You guys should mention the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act which basically states you can use any tuner you want as long as it is EPA compliant, and some other interesting rulings. Also a comment was made that loosing backpressure is bad. That is inaccurate, the issue is with velocity and reversion. Just my 2 cents

    Then I think a law came out, forget what it’s called, but they have to be able to prove the failure was a result of the aftermarket mod to deny the claim. I can see some wanting to go ahead and take the chance saying as you can spend 3-5k in the aftermarket and get the same numbers as that new crate 135 which will probably be over 10k installed. As you say, the trade off there is warranty! I’m lucky to be in Iowa where we can do pretty much whatever we want to them.

Im still confused on the "big risk". Can i not do a full exhaust with a harley tuner? Or are you saying i can only do a slip on with a tuner?
