Sonic's version of Piccolo. Only one of his kind at first with no memory of his true home, started out with a more villainous mean personality, eventually started to mellow out and become a good guy, and get really serious no-nonsense personalities. Eventually despite how cool and tough along with all the potential he had as a powerful fighter on par with Sonic, he get's totally ignored when a new tougher, meaner, angstier guy that's the same race as the hero shows up and is treated like a joke from then on out, disapointing loads of fans. Oh, and a version of him lives on a floating island separated from his tribe, and then when he finally meets them, opts to stick with his friends instead.
Luke Umbra .......good god, i have never noticed the similarities between the two until now. And Piccolo is also my favourite character from Dragon Ball Z ....wow. You might have just blown my mind a little there, lol. Thanks! XD

Angel island is like Kami's look out
+Luke Umbra For years people have been saying the similarities between Sonic and DBZ. Especially with Sonic and Shadow being Goku and Vegeta and the super forms being reminiscent of Super Saiyan. But this is the best connection I have seen yet. Not to mention as someone said Angel Island = Kami's Lookout.

I have to agree, I'm also disappointed with how they treat Knux, now. he doesn't deserve to be stupid.
Agreed. I was most disappointed to see what they did to him in Boom. My first reaction was, "NO, not Knux! Naive and gullible was alright, but don't make him a preschooler!" I still mentally cling to the Sonic Adventures days.
***** That doesn't matter, as much. It's still a part of the Sonic franchise, and it farther adds to the degeneration of Knux.

Hebiyoujo Sonic Boom makes him stupid.
We have not seen him in action anywhere else besides Sonic Adventure. He is gullible so there's that. Lol
That was Sonic Boom, and imo in the Boom TV series he's the gift that keeps on giving. From what we've seen in Forces though he seems fairly intelligent.
I have always missed his more mischievous nature. I find Shadow incredibly uninspired in comparison to Knuckles with that shit eating grin. The big dumb brute seems to be a good companion for a hero group aimed towards a younger audience, but it'd be quite cool to see Knuckles cause problems due to his own brash nature, rather than the idiotic mistakes he makes time and again.
Great stuff again of course. I really didn't know much about their potential plans for Knuckles' voice. That's rad as fuck.
Strekks Yeah, i think that's why i preferred Knuckles as the main rival too, since he had that cocky attitude about him. It made things interesting to watch and it knocked Sonic down a peg or two. Shadow never really seems interested in anything so his rivalry with Sonic is dull in comparison. I doubt we'd ever see SEGA bring the old Knuckles back either, which is a shame.

It sucks that since after Sonic Adventure 2 Knuckles' position of guarding the Master Emerald is no longer of any importance. In fact i don't think it's never mentioned ever again. I mean in other games since Adventure 2 has Knuckels ever bought up the the fact that he has to defend the Master Emerald?

It's up there with Shadow the Hedgehog, remember how much of a deep tragic backstory he had and how popular he was? Nowadays the guy is reduced to a character of no importance and even when he does make an appearance in a modern Sonic game (like Generations) his is just there. It's like Sega forgot how important he was
Well it was mentioned in Sonic Chronicles. Not to mention more of his species' backstory.
BUT did that game held up really well? Did it sold well?
Besides i don't think handheld games in terms of story hold much importance as they do in console games
that's because it was made by a company that KNOWS how important character backgrounds and continuity are in a game. (Early BioWare)
While I hate how Knuckles and shadow are treated today I still want to point 2 thing out
1) at the beginning of sa1 super sonic story is the island falling again and it never ever lifted up after that and after chaos and tikal were freed from the emerald regains the master emerald his ability to shrink its own size so that knuckles can carry it around were ever he goes and he could so finally become the treasure hunter he always wanted to be.
2)shadow own game ends with him leafing his past behind him so that its not going to drag him down ever again and wanted to make a fresh start so that his backstory isn't mention as frequently as it use to be isn't a problem for me.
BenGamin prequel sonic to forces shows eggman has been looking after it. No one has bothered with stealing it until forces today.
Think about it this way, with all the references to DBZ in Sonic
Sonic is Goku, the strong, happy go lucky guy.
Shadow is Vegeta, a darker take on Sonic that takes him on whenever they're free to
Knuckles is the Piccolo of the cast. Knuckles never knew his race of people, is introduced as a rival to our lead, and gets to become more of a stoic, side character who backs up Sonic whenever shit hits the fan.

Imo the Boom design makes more sense than the old designs. He's supposed to be super strong, the lanky twig appendages never really lent itself to that.
Knuckles was just a amazing character, tough with a sense of intelligence and coolness, also the you step on his shoes, it's gonna be worse then stepping on a normal lego. .... SO BOOM CARE TO TELL ME WHY YOU KILLED HIM FOR ME?

Keep up the great work! Knuckles has always been my favorite character from the Sonic series, and this video has helped put into words just why I love this echidna so much. I love your combined analysis and humor--it made the 16 minutes just fly by!

I love Knux. He's always been one of my favorites. Like you said, he's not dumb but simply gullible. The other characters just tease him for his straight forward ness. We have to remember that gee grew up in an isolated environment so his social skills and wouldn't be up to snuff. Although in Boom he's legit dumb, no denying it. Show is still funny though.
Boom is probably the most consistent and self aware version of his character which is why it's actually the best version imo. Even with his lack of social skills,anyone who had little interaction and then gets manipulated and lied to would not trust the person who lied to them as much as knuckles did in pre boom version of him. Basically, old Knuckles was intelligent but not wise, but boom knuckles is the complete opposite issue.

Now I just graduated High School and you really pulled out a moment from my childhood!
Rouge's relationship with Knuckles surpisingly never really went anywhere in the comics either. In the pre-super genesis wave stories, she was more of a flirtatious type who didn't really form any strong connections, but did have a strong respect for Knuckle's sense of duty. The post-SGW version is of course closer to the game version, forming deeper relationships with both Knuckles and Shadow, neither of which really went too very far just yet.
You are not alone in that belief. Having Knuckles be an idiot for Boom was the worst thing they could have done. I guess they must have felt that since Amy became smart, someone else needed to be the the dumb one. But even with that in mind they have enough with Sticks being paranoid about everything.
Having Knuckles be stupid would have worked out better if he sounded as Austrian as Hyrit (UA-camr).
Ctrl Alt Rmx Yeah, Sticks and her paranoia is enough stupidity for one character in the group so having Knuckles be a 'silly' character too just feels even more unneeded. I do like how Amy turned out though. But i'll save that for her episode when i review her ;D Thanks for watching! ~

Taking the words right out of my mouth!! So many people fight over the concept of Knuckles, especially since Boom came out. I feel like you explained this perfectly, and it couldn't be said in any better way! I've played Sonic 3 And Knuckles so many times I've lost count, but I've never taken the time to think about how Knuckles knocked the emeralds right out of Super Sonic: A virtually indestructible form. That is an amazing observation that just blew my mind! Who knows, maybe Sega will eventually try to reboot Knux someday in an attempt to regain that lost importance. DiGi Valentine I sure as hell didn't lol, I was a geek when it came to those emeralds and the fact they wrapped up the emeralds origins to Knuckle's island (as a trilogy) goes to show he knew more about those emeralds than Sonic did. And to top it off the Master Emerald, he guarded was a serious responsibility - he knew all the secrets/shortcuts to the island! So surely that was the whole point of that scene - Sonic got KNUCKED a peg or 2 down alright and had a hard time :p

It's always both great and rare to see someone acknowledge the fact that KTE struck Sonic SOOOOOOO hard that he "Bruce Bannered" him and took his shinies. lol Also that jingle at the end of your vids is pretty friggin catchy. Like the kind of tune that would play if the main character of a film were to walk in to some kind New Years party or somethin and the first thing he or she sees is some overly festive drunk swinging from a chandelier or somethin (best kinda party lol). I'd like to imagine that the reason for Knuckles always believing Eggman isn't necessarily the fact that he's gullible, but also because he has a bit of a rivalry with Sonic. He might hear from Eggman that Sonic's bad, and think to himself "Oh cool, not only is this a chance to knock Sonic around, but if he is truly a villain now, I can be seen as the hero who defeated Sonic." I highly doubt that's what Sega is actually going for, but part of me wants to believe that their's a bit more to Knuckles being tricked all the time than just him being extremely gullible.
RednekGamurz Knuckles rivalry with Sonic was pretty forced after the first game he showed up in. They had no reason not to be friends or not trust each at that point, but Sonic needed a rival before the role was filled by Shadow, who now also seems to have some anger towards Sonic for no actual reason.
I always thought that maybe - as per Sonic Adventure 2 - Knuckles was channeling the power of the Master Emerald to nullify the energies of the Chaos Emeralds when he punched him.
Either that or bad writing, but that couldn't possibly be the case, riiiiiiiight?

It makes things easier for new viewers if i just stick with one line of continuity and not make it too confusing by including multiple different takes on the same character.

I know Knuckles was in Chaotix, but Sonic Team could of made a game or two with him. He's a guardian of the master emerald, he has natural skill for hunting treasure, he has potential for building character. I mean i know guarding the master emerald is simple bliss, but at one point he has to assume that his whole race could be extinct. That's a scary but engaging interaction with someone like Knuckles. And last but not least, if Dr. Eggman and even Knuckle's ancestors have tried to use the magic chaos Emerald for their own needs, why hasn't there been any other villains causing trouble for Knuckles? Yeah, its a floating island, but with alot of money and a private army for hire, any other villain could try to take the master emerald by force. Hell, you can even create villain who can also use magic, but will get alot of destructive power if the master emerald was in his/her's hands. I'm actually surprised Sonic Team didn't give it any thought.

They did actually build up on the echidna story in sonic chronicles with a whole new race of technologically enhanced magic echidnas but nobody really gave a shit and then it never got a sequel.

13:00 I kinda like it because it shows how strong Knuckles is, the fact that in his base form he can knock the super out of sonic. I think they said his strength matches sonic’s speed.
In the comic they say that knuckles is a living chaos emerald and his egg was fused with chaos energy from the Master emerald.
Knuckles is naive because he was stuck on a floating island for almost his entire life and doesn't understand trust or social cues.

Couldn't agree with you more on all of this... you hit all the aspects of his character and the many ways he's changed pretty spot on! As a character he still has so much potential... it's almost like Sega can't decide on a single angle to go with him and so he keeps changing to fit different roles as needed...
... Awww yeah. Roleplaying Sonic chars as kids is just one of those things that marks you for life. Is there a name for that affliction? Or does is just another symptom of geek syndrome?

Eh, I like to think Sonic ran out of rings at the exact moment Knuckles knocked the emeralds out of him, which explains why Sonic starts off with 0 rings. Also I totally agree with you're idea of Knuckles' personality changing post S3&K, and it bothers me that he dosn't seem to give a crap about the Master Emerald in Sonic Heroes and onward, but oh well, he'll always be one of my fav characters, from one of my favorite games of all time.......Oh! ***** He was pretty hyped-up when he first arrived, yeah. Stole a lot of Sonic's thunder in the 90's, he was that much of a success. Growing up as a fan of the Archie Sonic comics, I was absolutely in love with that series' portrayal of Knuckles. They wound up making him the most complex and interesting character in that continuity.
So, I just found this show. Well, now I gotta tell everybody I know about this, when I'm not blasting your tunes at them. I'm glad that I get a new place to be excited for DiGi Valentine's stuff.

In the comics they explained that the master emerald gave knuckles the ability to glide, which may explained how he punched the super out of Sonic. Knuckles has absorbed some of that chaotic energy into his body over the years.

Well in SA2 they showed that the things knuckles learned of the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds from the first adventure from tikal. The part where he stops the other emeralds. I kinda wish you talked about knuckles in Sonic Heroes cuz I mean they expressed him alot in that game, The last game where Knuckles meant something

Knuckles is one of my most favorite Sonic Characters only because I love a Characters who can deliver awesome Punches almost like One Punch Man Style, Literally Erupted a Volcano in Sonic Boom just by Punching the Ground in just One Punch XD

Knuckles exposed Super Sonic's unexplored weakness- SURPRISE! *shits out emeralds* I think the only time Eggman conquers Super Sonic is in the prologue of Unleashed, when he manages to capture him and turn him into the Werehog.

Mark Strauss Very true, and the Sonic Unleashed intro did spring to mind when i wrote this episode out, but i saw that event as more of a mechanical contraption that kinda 'rips' the Emeralds from out of Sonic, rather than Knuckles here who literally just smacks them from him with brute force alone. Within these conditions i don't think there has been another character who physically knocks Super Sonic out of his Super form within a story-cutscene.. unless i'm overlooking somebody?
