G-Saviour | The Gundam Retrospective

- In 1999 Sunrise and Polestar Entertainment released the cursed movie G-Saviour. Rife with terrible acting, flat CGI and a boring plot, G-Saviour is a piece of the Gundam franchise that most would love to forget. But here on this channel we can't do that. So let's take a look at G-Saviour and see if there is anything worth saving.

I worked at Prop’r FX, the company that fabricated the hundreds of helmets and armor vests for Starship Troopers. The good, clean pulls from the molds were finished up and shipped to the film location in Arizona, and the ugly pulls (excessive flash, lopsided, air bubbles) were shoved into a crawl space above the bathroom. Because it was such a huge production, we wound up with a lot of bad pulls… easily several hundred. Every couple months, different low budget production companies would come by and buy a few dozen vests and helmets. I know that Saban bought some for a power rangers show, and the guys who made G Savior must have been another. I vaguely remember seeing stills from this movie in an issue of “Hobby Japan” and being incredibly excited to see my handiwork being used in a Gundam movie… until I saw the actual movie and realized that it was maybe one notch above Robot Jox
I always wondered why repurposed props from Starship Troopers kept showing up in lower budget films and TV shows in the late 90s/early 00s. Another one that sticks in my mind is in the war flashback scenes of "Firefly" where the Alliance forces use the helmets and armor. I'm SURE Fox was one of those productions who bought "ugly pulls" from y'all. Thanks for the anecdote!
Starship troopers made me the man I am today
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy used the armor for the Terra Venture GSA Troops,
When I first moved out on my own, I arranged all my DVDs in order from most favorite to least favorite. G-Saviour was at the last spot. Nine years later, having moved, gotten married, and having 5 kids, my sister visits. She sees my movie collection, remarking on two things. The films are now in alphabetical order, and that G-Saviour is still holding up the rear.
This made me chuckle. Well done
Real question is....why don't you just throw it away like every other person that regrets buying this trash movie?
@_Gungrave_ lol the curse of the hopeless completionist, I suppose
When I saw the guy in the Titans uniform, I had a feeling the costumes were purchased rather than designed; when I saw the soldier in the starship troopers armor, I knew
Wait a titans uniform?
Those starship troopers infantry vests were reused so many times. They were in power rangers lost galaxy too.
@@botwhy8017 Did that also keep the helmets?
@@botwhy8017 Battletech also used it once. And that was a fucking drawing.
@@DIEGhostfish they kept the helmets, but they didn't fit right a lot of the time and it looked pretty weird. A lot of helmets flopping around ineffeftually. Still makes me laugh.
G-Saviour is definitely a movie of all time

@@luisalfonsocecilio7374 Mecha genre is dead because companies only produce mostly garbage isekai or ecchi harem isekai. You don't need to pay writers to create garbage like that when the character that has the most depth to them is truck-kun and the story is nonexistent.
I will stand and defend G Savoir just so there is some community out there that will never let it be forgotten. The game is decent... I hope you found my LP of it while searching.
G Savoir also has a 4 second cameo on Build Fighters where it's used as a training dummy and promptly deleted in one slash.
I remember a very funny montage someone made, with the G-Saviour exploding over the voice line: "My death only proves that I exist!"
Yes, if anything, the game is much better than the movie by a lot. I really love the design of the G3-Saviour.
@@nicodalusong149 only remember the game and forget the movie
Gonna go watch it right now!
G saviour is based. The movie too!
Oh my god you were serious. You’re ACTUALLY covering this one.
I was honestly hoping that if you were going to cover this, it’d be like an April Fools thing where you explain in excruciating detail how this is the TRUE magnum opus, not just of Gundam, but all of fiction.
Funny story, April Fool's was when I found a file for G Saviour on my first forray on /m/ on 4chan. I waited for a gag but... Nope. Legit file. I have it still a long with my disc for the movie.
That is hilarious, and a better story than the one this movie told.
Another channel already did that

G-Saviour seems to have this infamy among Gundam fans as something of an MST3k-style disaster - something you could sit down and laugh at for its various inadequacies - but it's honestly just competent enough to be forgettable. The most interesting aspect of G-Saviour at this point is... it's in the Universal Century. Like, it's the last entry on the official UC timeline, and it's still in continuity apparently.
I mean, I don't care really, I just find it kinda hilarious in 2022 with all this fervent obsession with minutia of canon in all these fictional universes across so much media and we have Gundam's original and most prolific setting with G-Saviour as its ultimate conclusion. This multi-billion dollar epic space opera's closing act being the battle of Mark and Jack over the fate of Simon Fraser University.
"This multi-billion dollar epic space opera's closing act being the battle of Mark and Jack over the fate of Simon Fraser University."
hahahah I love this it's so true.
@@Retcon404 Call me crazy, but part of me actually wishes Bandai would come back to G-Saviour and either make a sequel to the game (be it an anime, movie, ova, whatever.) or even better, just made a straight up replacement for the movie itself.
Basically, redo G-Saviour, do it right, and show us how it's actually done.
I kinda hate you for how absolutely correct you are
Tomino says it don’t count so it don’t count 😂
Before g Savior came out, everyone just assumed the universal century was just constant warfare until it led to turn a, this, this is kinda worse
Don’t let the movie sour your interest in the G-Saviour part of the Universal Century:
-The film itself was only one of 3 parts of media that were made for the anniversary, the other 2 being the PS2 game, which takes place one year after the events of the movie, and 3 radio dramas (recaps available in the wiki) which tell stories taking place before the events the of the movie.
-Furthermore, a Japanese novel version of the movie exists, which actually relates more elements of the era with those of the last couple universal centuries, though that may be harder to track down.
-As a bonus, there is supposedly a promotional trailer that is a self contained story about some mob boss trying to attack New Manhattan with Bugus, but I haven’t had luck tracking it down. I do have seen some screenshots though.
Let me tackle the movie itself now:
Plot wise, the setting of the movie is interesting: the EF finally collapsed on 0218, having grown even weaker than in Gundam Victory. Their last MS, RGM-196 Freedom followed the example of his older brothers, being a very obsolete machine by 0218 (a 22 years old MS at the time), and even more so when Gaea is forced to deploy them for defense in 0223 (now 27 years old, and lacking access to ranged beam weapons).
The group you perceived as the EF in the movie is actually a new faction called Consent, which includes Sides 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, plus Earth itself, which the EF left unable to produce food and therefore now fully relies on food imports from the Sides/Settlements, namely those not part of Consent.
The other large faction, missing from the movie, is the Settlement Freedom League, which consists of the Moon, as well as Sides 1 and 4. At first they benefitted from Consent’s dependency on food from them, but every years their demands for food increased and the League also decided to prioritize feeding its own population, leading to the starvation problem in Consent.
One more thing I want to add is that G-Saviour does make a contribution to the technological aspect of the Universal Century, with the introduction of the autonomous mobile weapons.
If you check a mechanics section of the movie in the wiki, you will quickly notice that the Rai has two different model numbers & profiles: the CAMS-13 MS Rai is the MS aversion of this suit, but the CAMW-13 MW Rai is basically the Mobile Doll version of this unit. In the movie only Jack’s unit is the MS version, all the other Rai units being of the MW Rai type, including those who shoot down the general since they were programmed to attack all Gaean targets (reminds me of Heero and the others attacking a OZ facility in space while wearing OZ space suits, which caused the Mobile Dolls to start attacking OZ soldiers as well).
By the way, the Zaku looking CCMS-03 Bugu is an older model MS and all are piloted by humans.
I haven’t played the game, but I do know that it picks up this plot line of military buildup, introducing new more advanced MS, as well as more autonomous Mobile Weapons, which apparently the main character of the game (not Mark by the way) hates for being soulless killing machines.
And if it isn’t obvious after all that, I do would love to see you play the game and hear your opinion on the game itself, but above all, on the story and mechanicals aspects!
He said it's Consent, just that it acts as the Fed. lluminati is apparently directly related to SNRI and BESPA.
I still have faith in The Netflix Gundam movie since it’s only being published by Netflix and being made by Legendary pictures of Pacific Rim and Kong skull island. Which is also the director.
Yeah, I'm just happy it's in the right hands, even if the publishers are FUBAR.
I'm okay with it because Sunrise is doing the script. Now how they choose to bring this to life is the thing we'll have to wait and see.
and he's even a Gundam fan too
Imagine Rob Zombie’s Zeta Gundam, ZZ, & AfterWar X.
Netflix has no studios they fund Productions
I remember watching this as a kid and the only thing that stuck with me is that Dr. Graves is the voice actress for Lady Une in Gundam Wing.
You were truly our G-Saviour for covering this movie.
My one regret was getting rid of my G-Saviour DVD. My other regret is not being able to get the gunpla that this trainwreck spawned. The fact that it's canon to the UC timeline and takes place in UC 0223 (F-91 is in UC 0123) will never, ever stop entertaining me. Especially if you start doing design comparisons to other UC Gundams because it definitely takes a lot of design cues from the F-90 with its myriad mission packs. Suppose that's one thing that Sunrise didn't let them get wrong. Anyways, super entertaining video as usual. Thank you for shining a light on this thing that was made and most certainly exists and takes up space.
I'm right there with you on the gunpla front for its time it was a really solid kit. It got reprinted not to long ago I remember seeing a few for like $20 but passed up at the time and now they're going for over $70.
G-Savior is definitely the missing link between F series to Strike and the Bugu is clearly a predecessor of Ginn
Fun Fact; they actually did have the G-Saviour appear as a brief cameo in one of the Build anime series, and Final Fantasy XIV literally just reuses the name for the upgrade to the G-Warrior, the in-universe Gundam reference in a side questline after Shadowbringers. It's ALL Gundam themed in fact, with a ton of nods and references throughout. Even the bosses are designed after mostly UC mobile suits and mobile armors, with the final one being an obvious reference to the final battle in Stardust Memory!
You even get a housing decoration after you complete the questline, called MG G-Warrior. You get a friggin' gunpla lmao
It might surprise you to know they made a G-saviour model kit.
Imao
And it appears in Gundam Build Fighters.
Still funny that the last time we ever see the G-savior is in Build Fighters just to have it job
Square Enix produced the Fullmetal Alchemist Movie because they also published the manga itself. SE does more than video games, they also own a manga imprint called Gangan Comics which publishes the Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine. FMA being one of the series that was published there, along with stuff like Soul Eater, Higurashi, in other magazines also Black Butler, Durarara, Darker Than Black, Akame Ga Kill, Goblin Slayer and of course several Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest manga. This is also why most of the FMA video games are by SE.
I'm aging myself with this, but I remember being with a buddy in an On-Cue store around '02 or '03. We were hyped with G Gundam on tv and were hoping to find more Gundam to watch. There were two DVD's on the shelf. Char's Counterattack, and G-Saviour.
Guess which one I decided to buy.

The costumes from Starship Troopers pop up in a lot of places, for some reason.
Those suits did their part for Hollywood for years
Do you want to know more? It’s because they made tons of them for the large scale battles
@@Astronopolis Interesting. Although they pop up in the strangest places, like here, or in Power Rangers.
It also pops up for inspiration of real robot anime. Starship Troopers has an 80s OVA.
My god! You madlad. I was just joking when I commented on doing G-Saviour. I didn't think you'd actually do it.
Ironically...the storyline still fits more recent stuff despite Sunrise refusing to acknowledge it openly. Events in the space warring state era of newer Crossbone can lead to the situation in this logically, and also can lead to G-reco too unlike old extended UC like mad wang timeline.
I would like a reboot under better writers.
@@barrybend7189
Agreed. My idea would be to turn it into a gritty, Andor-esque political thriller but still with more MS action than the film.
The G Saviour game is... Actually not bad, specially it is more in connect with the original UC Timeline, though the dialogue can be cringey a lot

Its actually easy to write a descent Gundam live action movie
Just take one of theses Films
Top Gun
Black Hawk Dawn
Saving Private Ryan
Enemy at the Gates
then change the faction into gundam related faction
and change the soldiers to Mobile Suit
They can make it an Anthology if they want
The High Grade model kit was cool. Thats about it.
Thank you so much for covering G-Saviour; I've been curious about the story but I knew I'd never watch it and as lazy as it sounds I didn't wanna read the Gundam wiki page lol. But also,,, I'm hyped for your Gundam Seed video!!
My question is how did this movie get made? It was made when Gundam wasn’t even released in the west, then they decided to get rid of the original performances for 4 years.
I also find it hilarious how these people managed to avoid this movie on official sites considering how many other movies actors are embarrassed of are still on their. I love how Starship Troopers costumes are here because the OG novel was an inspiration for mecha anime. I mean I guess it shows that this movie will be a parody of the source material just like the 1997 adaptation
"-- THIS VIDEO CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILER FOR G-SAIVOUR WHO CARES --"
I question whether this hunk of rotting offal can actually be spoiled any further. :)
Whoah! this is a deep cut. Seen this on cable and I really thought they were going to make a show about it.
Fun fact: Graves is played by Lady Une's english voice actor
Saw this on the feed and just exclaimed "oh no" out loud on the train...
the g-saviour makes an appearance at build fighters S1
I've been following your retrospectives for a bit, and I had been expecting SEED for the next video. It was nice to get tripped up by something! I've never heard of G-Saviour, so thanks for the dive!
I think the worst part of this movie was that after even listening to a story recap at some point, when Side 4 is mentioned, I was like "Oh yeah, it's a Gundam movie!" Which is something that I never thought I would even think out loud. It's such a bizzare case of movie being generic sci-fi that when ~giant robots~ Mobile Suits are introduced, it feels off.
Also it feels that MS have wrong scale from scene to scene, it's weird.
Your channel has become one of my top posting expectation channels. Your reviews are fucking awesome!
I was quite excited for the upcoming Gundam movie when it was first announced because it was a Legendary Pictures production, which made Pacific Rim, so far the only mainstream mech movie I know of, and was a co-production with Bandai, who want to expand the franchise's influence in the west and intended on making sure the movie stayed true to the core themes of Gundam. They also got Brain K. Vaughn to write for it, a comic book writer responsible for several well received series like Runaways, Y The Last Man, Papergirls, and most importantly Saga, which also focuses on a sci-fi war and it's impact on normal people.
But in the half a decade since then there's been almost no other news and the movie is set to release on Netflix rather than theatrically, so it's giving the impression of a very troubled production, Likely tied in to Covid. I don't know if Legendary Pictures is still making it but considering the recent purge of content by the new Warner Brothers management it's looking like even more bad news. Overall I'm not nearly as excited for it any more.
Anime movies get a bad rap but I think in the same way that comic book movies and now even the occasional videogame movie found a way to work I think it is possible to do them well, and I'd really like a good Gundam movie series to exist so more people can be drawn into the franchise.
As far as I know, legendary is not property of Warner, they are just partnerts
When I first I saw it, I was immediately taken out by how normal everyone’s names were.
I feel like G-Saviour game review might be best saved for a Gundam games Retrospective series if you ever get around to doing that
I wont lie, I am fascinating by this movie. I get its bad but the fact that its a live action adaptation of one of the most beloved franchises of all time and NO ONE talks about it is wild to me. I've seen more people talk about the weird 80s Captain America movie than this.
I will give G-Saviour some credit, it does have some cool suit designs if you look at the line-art, kind of a throwback to MSG with the base but some touches of flair from other UC picked up along the way.
G Savior is a guilty pleasure of mine only because it had potential but due to a weak script & horrible acting/ CGI, it failed miserably. Even the planned gunpla release was canceled with the exception of the HG 1/144 G Savior itself. Initially I had high hopes when they announced a new live action Gundam film being made by Legendary Pictures & Sunrise thanks to the cameo of the original Gundam in the film Ready Player One, then for years there was no new info, just rumors. I lost all hope when it was officially announced that Netflix was taking over the project.
Does this mean we might actually get videos on;
Gundam Neo 0087 Green Divers, Evolve, MS IGLOO, & [gasp] Twilight Axis 😮

A lab beside an evidence room is realistic if they dressed it up as a forensics lab.
I heard this movie was bad
But God I never expected this BAD
What makes me so sad about this movie is that I unironically really like the MS designs. They were truly done dirty and deserve a second chance.
Didn’t know that it had Canadian actors and some places were filmed in British Columbia that’s my province well kinda feel happy we took part in making something that was Gundam and we also did the dubbings of Gundam Seed Chars Counterattack and gundam wing

Thank you for your review on this Bad movie lol
As someone who likes SEED, um... Yeah, Destiny is a show that I'm so happy I ain't gonna bother with.
Thanks to this video, I can now add Brenan Elliot to my small list of random nerd culture people born in my city. With Venom/Spawn's creator and Wolverine being the other 2-
I will never apologize for enjoying this movie. I even have a copy of its official US release on DVD and watch it annually.
The High Grade model of the G-Saviour itself is a great kit too.
I think using the starship troopers outfits make sense because of how they act. It helps give them that titans vibe.
I wouldn't mind seeing you cover the G Savior game.

The first Gundam of the new millennium... And it was an apocalyptically misguided Live-Action spin-off film. I mean, say what you will about SEED, but it was a massive improvement over whatever this shit was meant to be! Quite frankly, knowing of this movie makes it a miracle that Gundam even became a cult phenomenon in the western world with airings of New Mobile Report Wing, MSG and Mobile Fighter G on Toonami.
But hey. I'd still take this over the infamous SEED Destiny and the ongoing bait-and-switch Lesbian Romance fluff that is Witch from Mercury... Nah, I totally wouldn't. Thank you for your sacrifice.
G Savior might return to mainstream in the Crossboneverse, with their food shortage subplot.
Mark is the most normal protag in canon and that’s a fact you can’t deny
Mark is basically the Andor of Gundam. He just needs an Andor to show him off properly.
Biggest plothole in the UC timeline. Lighsource that will allow agriculture underwater rather than building more agricultural space colonies to increase food production like what the earth federation did. Like a better plot is the repeat of the OYW when the agricultural space colonies wanted independence and Consent wanted them to keep them in line to feed its larger and growing population and keep an Iron grip to the colonies to keep cost low. But the colonies didn't want to be under an corrupt and oppressive state so war will break out. Keeping with the ideas of "kill them all" Tomino.
Rooster Teeth did a watch along with this movie. its also funny to imagine Gsavior in the same universe as Jason X.
I don’t know how credible this information is, but apparently the Gundam Wiki considers this movie as part of the late Universal Century. As in, this movie supposedly takes place in the same continuity as the original Mobile Suit Gundam. This would also make G-Saviour one of the last documented events in the U.C. timeline, meaning that everything from the One Year War to the events of Victory have led up to the events of this movie. What a way to cap off the original continuity I guess.
I'm gonna need you to play the G-Savior game, big dog. Yes really.
He fell in love with Lady Une!👍
Of course in the year 2022 while watching a review of a Gundam movie I only vaguely remember renting on VHS am I reminded of a Ray Romano movie I thought was a dream in college.
Really blows my mind that the climax of the movie would never had happened if Mark didn’t cheat on his wife
Funny thing, there is a second live-action gundam. An FMV game called Gundam 0079: War For Earth which is absolutely awful too.
"this highlights something annoying about Mark, he always refuses to do everything at first and then immediately gives in and does it anyway" .... I feel personally attacked. 😭
And thank you for doing a video on this I was starting to think I was the only one that ever saw this
I just watched this for the first time ever today and maybe my favorite thing about it is that it takes place hundreds of years in the future and everyone is using CRT monitors. Even back in the 80s sci-fi shows (like Star Trek TNG) tried to hide their technological limitations by making screens look flatter and sleeker than the then-modern ones, but this movie just has everyone with a brick on their desk.
LOL My dad has Welcome to Mooseport on DVD and I've watched it with him a few times. I think it's one that he cycles through about once a year, not as often as Trapped in Paradise.
Put this one off for a long time but had to watch it when you dropped the retrospective. I feel like that's an hour and a half of my life I'm not getting back. On the bright side it's SEED next.

I'm a sleepy guy, I fall asleep alot, but Mecha keep me awake, but gsaviour is the only Gundam project that made me fall asleep
Oh shiiiii--- GSAVIOUR!!!
I remember seeing it on an old Anime mag I used to read... Then when buying Gunpla I saw the HG Space G Saviour and picked it up! I was pretty shocked that the pilot was a real person rather than being animated!
Thus my curiosity was piqued and I found it here on UA-cam! So I watched and.... Yeah it reminded me too much of Stargate and there were too little mecha fights... Sad
Call me crazy, but a part of me wouldn't mind if they give this idea another shot. Heck, maybe tie up closely with After War Gundam X. That way we have 4 eras in the original timeline.
Universal Century, After war, Corrected Century, and Reginald Century.
used to own a dvd of this, and true enough, there was excessive lenghty BGM in every scene.
as for the MS action, there was a 5 minute run in the dark at the intro (couldn't even see the MS, dude was apparently using a Ball), a bad presentation of the gundam being a static background decor for 2 minutes nearly 40 minutes into the movie, and an amazing 7 minute long MS mass scale battle, at the very end before the credits roll.
as the second media introduction to Gundam (first being Wing) it was quickly dropped, not because of its quality, but because of its lack of identity. for most of the viewing i forgot i was watching a gundam movie, because all they did was talk, walk around, talk in a dark hallway, and talk while trying to kill other, and then go on to keep talking during the big battle. all with an emotionless monotone from everyone except the MC.
THE PEAK OF GUNDAM G-SAVIOUR
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy also borrowed uniforms from Starship Troopers.
it was hilarious to see the recycled starship troopers props and soldier armor
Can I just say that I only recently discovered your Gundam Retrospective series(like, seriously, I think it was earlier this week), and I'm already a massive fan.
Yeah G Saviour is a mess from beginning to end. The only extremely minor saving graces are Jack going all out hammy villain in the final battle and Cynthia, who’s played by Erika Okuna, who’s also the English voice of Lady Une in Gundam Wing. She gives a performance so good the movie doesn’t deserve her. Believe it or not though, as bad as this movie is, I think G-Reco and Seed Destiny are still my rock bottom of Gundam
Sam Vincent, who voiced Athrun in the English audio of Gundam SEED unremastered, also makes an appearance if I remember correctly.
(I added "unremastered" as in the HD remaster, Athrun's English voice is one Chris Hackney)
So believe it or not, this actually isn't the first time they did a Canadian live action adaptation of Gundam. Look up Gundam 0079: War for Earth. It's a Gundam FMV game filmed in Canada and then dubbed into Japanese for PC and PS1, but there IS a US release in English on PC. I never saw it on store shelves but I grabbed one off EBay so I can confirm it's real. This would be the very first Gundam thing ever released in the West so it's very fascinating with Zakus being called Zaks and Zeon being pronounced "Jhon". It's a retelling of the first chunk of Gundam and is relatively accurate...but also done in campy FMV game style where you play the role of Amuro and everyone looks directly at the camera.
If you could find it, a playthrough would be AMAZING but if you can't get it to run, just watching the Longplay would be enough. It's such a weird and fascinating piece of Gundam history. I couldn't imagine playing that game back in 1996 without knowing what Gundam is and then finding out just how much deeper the rabbit hole goes 5 years later.
how much you wanna be that when the Netflix live action Gundam eventually comes out there's gonna be people switching over and saying this is a misunderstood classic.
G-Savior's bad yeah, but I honestly the setting of post-Earth Federation U.C. has a lot of potential, since the main conflict in this part of Universal Century centers on CONSENT and the Settlement Freedom League as both claim to be the true successor states to the Earth Federation.
I wouldn't mind a retelling of G-Savior that fixes the plot and writing and better ties it into the broader setting. Like the few other works set in this part of UC Gundam establish that Earth's environment is so poor at this point that CONSENT has to rely on humanitarian aid from the SFL because it can't grow its own food, which gives CONSENT an actual, valid reason to want the bioluminescent maguffin. Maybe General Dipshit is doing backroom dealings with the SFL? Because the SFL would also want to keep CONSENT reliant on its aid.
I'm mostly spitballing here but G-Savior's story deserves to be told better than it was here imo
I actually found a copy of G savior at big lots one time lol;but seriously if you enjoy starship troopers you'll love blue gender

Would be interesting to do an enitre epsidoe just looking at the character Arcs of Armuro and Char (even using the Gundam Origin stuff). Also comparing Wing and 00 becasue 00 is basically Wing just made to make narrative sense. Keep up the great work!
