Underrated. There’s an obvious story behind it. I wanna head a narrator speaking behind it in order to get the image truly in my head. Barefoot Gen wasn’t enough. I need something darker in order to get myself more used to the world and in order to figure out how to cope with smaller tragedies. The fact someone of Japanese decent is talking about this is amazing.
Perhaps a normal response to 'Threnody' is stunned silence, but after learning Penderecki also composed the beautifully haunting 'XII Chaconne in memoria Giovanni Paolo II per archi' for his "Polish Requiem" (composed between 1984-2005) it too might leave you in stunned silence. /watch?v=_udQ-vTjHME
I have known this piece for nearly 50 years. I think I have every version available on CD and one rare version on vinyl. And I once had the conductor's score as well. I have still yet to see this performed live in a concert hall in the San Francisco Bay Area. Watching ua-cam.com/video/Pu371CDZ0ws/v-deo.html comes close, but I hope some group performs it here and I'll be able to see it in person in my lifetime.
I barely missed it by a couple years - 7 or 8 years - when Penderecki visited my conservatory in Hong Kong and worked with the students in a special performance. Gosh I wish I were born a couple years earlier!

I had a lot of fun watching the video! Well done Angus! And I would love to play your piece, of course ;)
Thank you for your very clear, understandable, and insightful analysis of this stunningly original and effective music.

I think Penderecki could have at least heard of the Apprehension Engine.
I watched an episode of Law and Order and one of the characters mentioned his name, but I never heard of him before this, or since.
Excelente video, saludos desde Chile
