Your first fig!! That's such great news! I hope it tastes amazing. I can't believe you have 40 different fig trees. Your garden is going to be a proper food forest in a few years.

Thanks, Dani! Yes, I'm, so excited for my first fig. I know the weather isn't the best for ripening at the moment and my tree is still very young, so I'm not expecting it to be the best, but I still can't wait to try it! Haha, yeah and 40 is a conservative estimate of just the different varieties I have, not even including any duplicates that I have lol 🤣🤣. Of course, I expect many of my trees to be mislabeled, especially the ones I bought from online sources, so I've no idea exactly how many I actually have.

Thanks! I'm super excited to be getting my first figs to ripen ( well hopefully, if the weather plays ball).

Yaaay first fig 👍🏻👍🏻 I can see it is mostly definitely a brown turkey but still has around just over a week to go, I'd wait until it's lovely and soft

Thanks, Mark! Yeah, I'm very happy to be finally getting a fig to begin ripening. Every year I've been getting close with different varieties and then they just drop off before ripening. This is the furthest I've got so far. The problem now though is the temperatures are much cooler this week and also wetter, so I'm a bit concerned the fruits will either not ripen or go mouldy on the tree.

I'm so excited for you, Peter. I ate the only ripe maincrop Brown Turkey on my tree today. My tree had dozens of small unripe fruit on it but I removed most of the branches because the tree was shading my other plants too much. They probably wouldn't have ripened anyway.
Although the temps next week doesn't look great, I hope the week after picks up for you.

Thanks, Dom! Yeah, I can't wait to try my first homegrown fig. I just hope the weather doesn't ruin it 🤞
Oh wow, how did the main crop look? I've heard that the main crop can be quite different in shape and size for most varieties of fig. Yeah, I wished it had been in the later stages of ripening last week as it was quite sunny and dry last week.

@@PeterEntwistle Yes, the main crop was a rounder, less elongated shape.
Taste was good but not exceptional or as sweet. A grub had burrowed a hole in it but I ate the fig anyway. LOL.
Yeah, the weather has been very rainy. I actually think the heavy rain is a good thing for our plants, it's the lack of sun and warmth which is the problem.

@@MoebiusUK Lol, yeah even if I have to pick this fig early, or it gets attacked by a pest I'll still be trying it lol 😂

    Hey, Peter!
I've been enjoying some Brown Turkey figs as well.

Thanks, Josh! Yeah, I can't wait to try these. I've heard that the Brown Turkey over in the US might be a different variety from the one we call Brown Turkey here. I actually have 2 more trees that were purchased as Brown Turkey, but originated from the Netherlands and those have totally different leaf shapes and have yet to fruit.

      @@PeterEntwistle interesting!
The Brown Turkey here is tolerant of our weather, and it's pretty reliable. It's not the best tasting, though. Now that I've harvested over 50 figs off my Violette, I think I much prefer it, and will be starting cuttings for everyone I know.

Great to see you have an almost ripe fig Peter and good idea keeping them bagged to protect from wasps etc. My singular unnamed fig has not done well this year, looks like it's about to drop its leaves. I may buy a different variety next spring.

Thanks, Louise. Yeah, I’m very excited to have my first figs starting to ripen. I don’t think they produce that well in containers unless we keep on top of feeding and either repotting or root pruning them yearly. I planted my Brown Turkey in the ground as I didn’t want to have to keep repotting every year and hopefully in time it will become well established and fruit more reliably 🤞. Did you not have some Brown Turkey cuttings from Brett? You could try repotting that for next spring and maybe it might fruit for you next year. I’m also planning to eventually graft other varieties onto my in-ground Brown Turkey to save on space.

That should still get bigger and the skin will wrinkle more and get darker Peter. I'd estimate quite a few more days to go but the wet, cooler weather won't help much unfortunately

Thanks, Brett. Yeah, I'm hoping it ripens before it gets really cold at night later in the week. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the fig trees start going into dormancy 🙄

Have watched another girl on here in UK that swears by bagging the figs she does it every year and always gets loads to ripening
