I was surprised that you were able to restore the cork. I was told by a repair shop that once the cork starts to crack, it cant be fixed or resealed. It looks like you did just that. Beautiful job.

My dad was a cobbler, many a time I saw him doing work like this, also hand stitching leather soles on leather uppers. Masterclass, and the smell of leather from his workshop. Great memories.

Wow this is a really good video! I'm gonna do this sole repair on my wolverine boots.I was gonna try to repair the soles myself but didn't know how to get the soles off..but now I know I can cut them off and grind them down.then reglue the new soles on.the boots have a wedge sole like a soft sponge.thanks

As much respect as I have for this craftsman and his patience and skill, I suspect the cost of an intricate and fastidious repair like that would cost almost as much as investing in a new pair of Birkenstock’s
It's a little pricey but usually my customers have very rare or discontinued birkenstocks. It is also cheaper to repair them then to just buy a new pair. The leather patina looks beautiful when aged.

why buy new if you can repair, restore and support local artisans ? You get to keep your perfectly fitted pair and it's way more ecological

I had a pair of Birkenstock sandals for almost 10 years. I cleaned them with Dawn dish detergent and an old toothbrush. I never protected the cork though. Still. 10 years for a pair of shoes I cleaned all the time, I'll take that. 👍

This is by far the best video on this subject on youtube. 👌🏽 Only thing that I would have loved to know is the composition of the liquid soap kinda stuff by which the suede is cleaned.

Is more like make new shoe.
Guys, you have to use the "cork sealer" befor the cork is dried out. So the bedding wont dry out at all and break or crumble💁🏻♀️ The dried out cork bedding should be replaced as well, wont last a long time.... just saying 😊

Birkenstock used to have a repair service where you would send your old pair for sole and cork replacement for half the price of new ones! Sadly this service stopped a few years ago.
Ich habe den Reparaturservice vor 3 Jahren bei Birkenstock genutzt. Es gibt ihn meiner Meinung noch, ist allerdings sehr teuer geworden. Ich glaube 50 € für ein neues Fußbett mit Sohle.
Ich war damals allerdings nicht ganz zufrieden mit dem Service. Sohle und Fußbett sind OK, aber irgendwie hat der Service das Leder versaut. Die Riemen sind schrumplig und knittrig nach der Reparatur geworden. Scheinbar ist das Leder nass geworden und wurde nicht richtig getrocknet. Keine Ahnung, warum das passiert ist. Nochmal werde ich den Service nicht nutzen. Zu teuer und zudem das Leder versaut.

You can recycle older shoes. Often times it's more sensible to buy a new pair instead of having your existing pair repaired. Repairing can be pricey.

The suede gum and cleaning stuff looks great. As that’s the part that always looks the worst. The rest of the shoe stays tough for quite a while.

Amazing, i have a lot of Birkenstock’s I knew about the sandpaper trick to clean the inside of sandals, but what glue did you use because I need to glue the cork part in the back
glue is renia colle de cologne and you'd better to seal the Cork.

But the old ones are so very comfy, they are moulded to the shape of you feet, new ones take ages to get like that again. And just about when they get really comfy is when they start to look like they are falling apart. Its a never ending circle

Thanks for your comment C N! yes I used both horsehair brush and a little hard one like toothbrush to clean. Cleaner and conditioner are different. Conditioner is used after cleaning. You can use any kind of suede cleaners for footbed cleaning.

Wow, nice video! I was looking for the "how to clean a Birkenstock" but also got interested by how you nicely glued the sole. What kind of glue that you use, and does it have to be heated?
Thanks. The glue that I used is Renia colle de cologne. After gluing both sides and dry them. And then heated them to stick together. You do not have to heat them if they are not completely dried.

There are cracks/breakdown in the cork? I thought when that happens the cork has to be replaced.
Jacqueline, If the cork has a small crack, it can be glued and sealed. But if the cork cracked too much, then footbed should be replaced. Please subscribe,share,and like :)
