    You can do much more with Hoppes #9. I use it as an after shave on big nights out.

    I'm switching from Hoppe's to Ballistol. I'm keeping whats left in the bottle. The smell of Hoppe's always brings back the childhood memories of my father cleaning his gun.
    Thanks for all your videos.

      I appreciate the comment. Your enjoyment with the videos makes the time doing them well worth it. I have used Ballistol almost exclusively for 6-8 years and am really pleased with the results. I occasionally have to get a Hoppe's fix just so I can smell it and think I am really doing a good job. Lots of memories for me with Hoppe's also. I am also going to try out the new synthetic Hoppe's and will let you know my thoughts. Thanks again.

    This is one of the most well informed UA-cam videos I have watched. Thank you for the great review! I have started using Ballistol on all my guns and have had great results. I still have a large bottle of Hoppes 9, and I used it to clean the bore. I cleaned my crossbreed horsehide holster with Ballistol and it looks and feels great.

      I do exactly the same with the Hoppe's and Ballistol - including cleaning and softening my Crossbreed's as well. Thanks for the comment and for viewing the videos.

    That was very informative. Being older, I still have the old Hoppe's, and RIG (rust inhibiting grease). The latter solved the problem decades ago of display guns being affected by exposure to airborne corrosive gases and droplets almost always present in indoor environments. Not to mention guarding against fingerprints, water, etc. from handling and use.
    Those others I was unfamiliar with, other than hearing about Ballistol.

      Thanks so much for the compliment. I had researched the info earlier for myself and found it so informative that I decided to share it with others who might also be interested in more details about these specific cleaners. My go-to cleaner is Ballistol but I have no problems at all with CLP, and occasionally alternate them especially in a gun I frequently shoot. Hoppe's 9 is still in my arsenal but more as a bore cleaner and usually added in every 3-4 cleanings with a gun; especially if I have shot it a lot. I probably will never get totally away from Hoppe's as it's like an old friend. Thanks again for viewing.

      I really appreciate your comment. It makes the research and work that went into doing the video worth while. I simply do these videos as a hobby to try to get information out to and help average shooters like me; and to know I have helped someone just makes it more fun.
      If you are interested, I used Hoppe's for many years as a stand alone cleaner, then added BreakFree for basic cleaning through the years. Now, I use Ballistol (for the last 10 years or so) for my basic cleaning and every now and then add a good bore cleaning with Hoppe's. Works well and I can clean each time I shoot, usually at the range - quick, basic and easy in this manner. A good friend of mine (and great shooter) still prefers BreakFree (what the Marines used when he was a Marine). Said they had it in 55 gallon barrels.

    Hi, thanks for the video. It has been a while since you made it. Do you still use Breakfree and Ballistol for cleaning and lubricating your guns? Have you tested Froglube again or do you know if there has been any alterations made to it to perhaps fix the gumming up issues?
    I'm looking for a new allround CLP type gun care product and it seems Ballistol and Breakfree are the top two contenders right now. I was about to buy Froglube until I noticed all the issues people have been having with it, its quite pricey too especially compared to the two Bs.
    Best Regards,
    Papu

    Just switched from H#9 and BF CLP to Ballistol this week. I soaked the barrel of my .22 revolver, let is sit 20 mins and ran the brush thru a couple passes. When I ran the first patch thru there were fine slivers of lead on it (this after having cleaned with H#9 a couple days earlier).

      Everything seems smoother with Ballistol also. So far for me... better bore cleaning than H#9 and better lube than BF CLP. Time will tell regarding how well it protects.

    I've been using Ballistol for several years now as a cleaning agent, with good results. I've never used it as a lube. It just seems a bit too thin, like it would run off if the gun is left to sit for several months after cleaning. (yeah, I should lube the gun up before shooting it in that case, but ya know...) I stick to wheel bearing grease and 3 in 1 oil for gun lube. So far though I have no rust issues even in this humid part of the world. Good to hear it's reasonably non toxic as well.

    I've watched a lot of videos on various cleaning products, but this is by far the best and most concise explanation of the differences between the major products in the category. Question: Does it make sense to clean with Hoppe's and lube with CLP?

    • @RealGuysReviews
      @RealGuysReviews  10 років тому

      That is exactly what I do. I like to clean the bores out with Hoppe's and the rest of the gun with either Ballistol or CLP. For a quick clean, I will skip the Hoppe's, but I still "feel" like my gun got a good cleaning when I add Hoppe's to my cleaning process. I really look forward checking out the synthetic Hoppe's, but feel it is probably another agent similar to Ballistol and CLP. The diesel (kerosene) is probably the main agent in Hoppe's and it won't be in the synthetic. Thanks for commenting - it makes doing the videos even more fun.

  • @pickin4you

    I will stick with my Hoppes #9 as I have used for over 40 years myself. These 3 have been tested in a lab to see what works better as a lead and or copper cleaner, and Hoppes #9 out cleaned the other 2 easily. Ballistol did very little, as it mainly cleans as a penetrating oil. The test is on UA-cam and phone calls made to Ballistol and they said it was just to penetrate to get under and help lift the fouling off the bore. It does not dissolve anything. I use Ballistoil to spray down my pistols, but I still clean the bores with Hoppes #9. And, the old original Hoppes #9 which had the one ingredient removed was the best ever. I do not even use any of these for a lubricant. I use nothing but Mil-Comm for my protectant and lubricant.

    Well, I'm gonna try some ballistol. I'm new to this and I've tried Hoppes and Break Free so far. I hated the smell of Hoppes, and definitely will be avoiding it for it's toxicity. Break Free has been working for me so far, but I'd like to see if Ballistol will work even better. Certainly the fact that it's non-toxic will be a huge factor for me.

    Another great video, thanks for the information.
    I just bought my first bottle of Ballistol the other day and a spray bottle to apply and mix with water if needed. It was kinda a gift to my new S&W 60-15, I'd like to keep it a totally protected by Ballistol firearm. I've used Hoppes for years but with one of my LGS's advice I tried Frog Lube. It smells nice but I wasn't too impressed once I got by the peppermint odor.
    Next I went to Mil Comm and I like the performance of these products on my Semi Autos. Using the cleaner, Lube protectant and grease, the Glocks, Sigs, and CZs seem to be performing flawlessly. Its my choice for those firearms.
    Why try Ballistol? I dunno but that Model 60 feels awfully nice after a thorough cleaning/lube so I think I'll stick to Big Green for any revolvers that make it home. Maybe its the old world nature of Ballistol and the legendary history of revolvers that just makes me want to pair them up.

    Excellent review! Very important to understand not only their cleaning abilities, but most important to gun owners, their potential health affects and environment affects. Most important, whatever product you use, it is vital that gun owners wear chemical resistant gloves when cleaning their weapons. Don't take the chance for this stuff to permeate your skin and build up in your body. Be safe! Thanks

      I tried CLP for a couple years until it just wasn't getting the lead & copper out of my 22 barrels without reapplying and scrubbing a few times. After more research I discovered the formula has been changed since Safariland purchased them. Reading the latest can I also noticed it no longer said it was originally developed for the military. I think it HAS changed since then.

    Over here in europe ballistol is what everybody uses, my great grandfather used it, my grandfather my dad and I use it as well. My greatgrandfather picked up a mauser 98 rifle in ww1, in almost a 100 years it has seen nothing but ballistol and after thousands of rounds it is still in an excellent shape no rust no fouling no rotten wood., nothing My dad has about 12000 rounds through his beretta m9,he used nothing but ballistol , still in an excellent shape. This says it all. On ars or rifles with higher operating temperatures there might be better stuff but for the rest... excellent review!

    The original Hoppe's #9 has a different feel than these combined cleaners/lubricators/protectors. It feels and acts more like a solvent. I use it before using Ballistol, or gun oil. Greatly appreciate your video's, some of the best practical info on youtube. Question: You mention that Ballistol and Frog Lube are "biodegradable", does that mean they have a limited "shelf-life" and are best disposed of after two years or so?

    • @RealGuysReviews
      @RealGuysReviews  10 років тому +3

      Most petrol agents as Ballistol (mineral oil based) supposedly have a very long shelf like limited mostly by the additives especially in the aerosol product. Biodegradable means decomposed by biological agents and other living organisms, especially bacteria so it should happen minimal if any in the bottle. It is basically nature's decomposition process.

    I continue to be impressed with Froglube. For example, this past week I shot 200 rounds through my Glock 21 (copper jacket). I wiped all the crud off in a minute. I ran one swab down the barrel and it came out nearly clean. I inspected the barrel with my light and it was completely shiny with no build up. I don't really understand how organic substances can protect this well.

    You can do so much much more with Ballistol. I wash and rinse my car. Then a few squirts in clean warm water in a bucket. Rinse the car again with the Ballistol and towel dipped in bucket. Rinse it off. The car looks like it was waxed Ballistol doesn't harm metal or paint.

      +Arthur Smith Great comment. Ballistol is definitely the deal for me too. For some reason, I have to try new things, but I always drift back to Ballistol, and it is very loyal as it sits there on the cabinet with a smile on its little face simply waiting (and probably knowing) for me to come back home to it.

    New MSDS rules have recently been applied they are supposed to be more in depth. Great video I had been wondering about Breakfree CLP something I have almost exclusively used for 3 decades. I do get it on my hands and I'm not so concerned about it but when mixed with powder residue and the residues left by ammunition it can indeed have other carcinogens or even heavy metals suspended or emulsified. The same would apply to any of the cleaners/lubricants.

      +worddunlap Thanks for the info. I hope you are right with the MSDS rules. Companies should have to list the products in the agents. They don't have to give away their exact proprietary formula but it would be nice for them to tell what is in them - if for no other reason safety for us consumers. One of those heavy metals you noted we all need to more careful with is lead.

    I hope you can review Mil-Comm TW-25B and their other products. That's what I use to grease my Sig Pro 2022. I have a bottle of Hoppe's that I use to clean the bore but I'm starting thinking of pitching it for something a little less toxic. That TW-25B seems like good stuff though.

      +usparktalk I use the Mil Comm MC25 cleaner, MC2500 lubricant protectant, and TW25B synthetic grease on all of my semi autos and they run flawlessly with them. About 6 months ago I watched a guy doing test with the Mil Comm against Frog Lube and the Mil Comm was far superior in preventing rust in every test given, most were salt water exposure.
      I gave up on the Hoppes a couple of years ago and had been trying replacement products. I'm happy with the Mil Comm for my semi autos but out of nostalgia I have paired up Ballistol for my new S&W revolver. They just seemed meant for each other. LOL (and it seems to work well on this Stainless Steel Model 60.)

    so if I get the ballistol...is it the only product to clean and lubricate my xdm?

    • @RealGuysReviews
      @RealGuysReviews  8 років тому +7

      +Justin Miller Thanks for viewing. How I clean my guns is not necessarily what the manufacturers say - it has just worked years for me. If Springfield recommends lightly oiling then you probably should go with that. However, what I usually do is clean my gun sparingly with a CLP (Ballistol or Break Free). As I do this, I have the inside of my barrel "soaking" in Hoppe's 9. After running patches and a brush thru my barrel, I follow that at the end with a bore snake usually with a little ClP on the end of it. I - depending on nothing in particular - might put a tiny bit of gun oil on the rales but usually I just run a bit of CLP on them. I am not totally adverse to gun oil but if ever I use it, I use it very sparingly. So after all this verbose discussion, I usually only use Ballistol and Hoppe's. I appreciate your watiching the videos.

    I cannot decide which one is best for me, i clean at least one gun a day with the amount of guns my family has acquired from my grandpa. I am looking at Break Free and FrogLube, The only thing concerning me about FrogLube is that it is suggested to heat up the firearm before application. I am also worried about rusting of the gun, after they get cleaned and lubed they probably wont be shot for a year or two. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Oh and by the way great video keep up the good work!

      Shawn Willman Shawn, I will not use FrogLube any longer on a gun that I store. I do not like the "stickiness" on the gun after it sets up. Some state that they have not had this problem and all I can say is good for them, but for me it will not go in my guns if they are going to store for an extensive period of time. SEAL1 CLP is actually known as the original formula in the FrogLube development and is said not to get sticky. I have not tried it. However, I have decades of experience with BreakFree CLP, as has our military, and it works just fine for me. I have about 8 years experience with Ballistol and it works great also. I use BreakFree CLP and Ballistol interchangeably and most of the time run Hoppe's solvent thru the bores also regardless of the CLP agent used. I use very little gun oil with my handguns and usually let the CLP do most of the lubricating. Maybe a small amount of oil on the rales but that is about it. Over oiling is much worse than too little as too much will cause the gun to gum up. Hope this helps and thanks for your interest in the videos.

      No issue at all. I actually do similar all the time - in the past with CLP and now with Ballistol. For me CLP and Ballistol are interchangeable. I like to add Hoppe's as a bore cleaner occasionally and more ofter when I shoot reloads with lead.

      joe bananas After 40+ years cleaning guns, I do not think there is a best - it is simply what you feel comfortable with and what works best for you. I primarily clean my guns with either Ballistol or Break Free CLP and run Hoppe's 9 through my bores - polymer and stainless steel alike. I have noticed no problems and have cleaned hundreds of times in this manner. However, I do use Hoppe's only in the bore and am careful not to get it all over the gun otherwise.

      @RealGuysReviews  9 років тому

      Definitely. I clean with one or the other 95% of the time and every now and then run a specific bore cleaner thru my barrel like Hoppe's. The Hoppe's is probably not necessary but it makes me feel a little better to occasionally use it. Each time, I finish the cleaning of my barrels with a bore snake. Great invention and it works great. Hope this helps.

    Just noticed that by the graph mineral oil is a better lubricant than PAO until 100 C. Given that I don't usually raise the guns temp above boiling water, 212 F. Ballistol should be a better lubricant.

  • @RealGuysReviews
    @RealGuysReviews  9 років тому +3

    FROM THE 2015 SHOTShow: The explanation at the SHOT Show by the owner of FrogLube of the stickiness noted by some when using the product. To paraphrase, "When winterizing a gun with FrogLube, all excess FrogLube CLP must be removed, especially down in the intricate working areas of the gun. This is best done with a sonic cleaner. Then you are left with the CLP that has penetrated the metal and not actually on the metal." Thus, the gun appears dry, but in actually is protected by the agent being penetrated down in the microscopic pores of the metal.

      ***** I heard about frog lube on every site on the net. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread if you believe half what they say. Meanwhile i think it's too much trouble,. They tell you heat the gun with a heat gun to apply - the cost - now this winterizing bit? No thanks, I'll stick with TW25B or mobil 1. Hoppes or kroil for bore. They work and they're cheap.

    • @BlueonGoldZ
      @BlueonGoldZ 9 років тому

      Robert Maybeth You don't need a heat gun. A blow dryer for hair will heat the metal up really high. They want the metal to expand so these valleys and crevasses will open up allowing more of the lube to get inside. I'm not completely sold on it, though.

    FROG PUKE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. ITS JUNK. I USED TO BE A DEALER UNTIL I had 2 bad experiences I WENT TO GET MY SHOTGUN OUT OF THE SAFE AND I COULDN'T OPEN THE ACTION BECAUSE IT WAS GUMMED UP STICKY AND STUCK IN THE CLOSED POSTION. When I originally became a FL dealer I called the company and asked what is the best way to apply FL and like in the video above I was told to use a heat gun to heat up the items. then generously apply it and wipe it down and after a few application you will only have to use less. Well GUESS WHAT that don't fly. Here in OHIO it gets COLD. This past winter it got REAL COLD (2014-2015) IN THE TEENS. and I went out to shoot my CCW pistol (USPFS45) well I got one round off and the slide was stuck in the open position like I fired the last round. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH FROG PUKE, BESIDES WHO LIKES SMELLING LIKE BEN GAY. I HAVE SINCE RETURNED OR THROWN AWAY ALL MY FROG PUKE PRODUCT AND ASKED TO BE TAKEN OFF THE WEBSITE AS A DEALER I don't use it or recommend it.& I steer people away from it. If you want a better cleaner lube SEAL ONE. it works better without the gummed up sticky BS and you won't smell like BENGAY.

    I've been using Ballistol for years and would have been a lifelong customer except for their customer service. Dave Brown (co-owner of Ballistol) would not send me a trigger top for the liquid bottle. Even blamed me for buying thru a distributor (Midway) to save a few bucks and not thru their website. He would rather argue about the fault of the customer for 15 minutes than send a trigger that I got with my first purchase from the website. Don't understand his business logic. I expect better customer service - not an argumentative owner.
