I got my grandkids a personal item sized suitcase and matching packing cubes for their birthdays or Christmas and I’m teaching them how to pack. My biggest obstacle is their mother, my daughter, who likes to throw a pile of clothes into a large checked suitcase. My favorite suitcase is a Samantha Brown carryon that folds down to personal item size,or unfolds to carry one size
It’s definitely so hard to break the habit of packing things you “might need”. I still find myself over packing especially when I plan to do laundry during our trip.

I often take a loose jacket (light or heavier, depending) with several pockets that can fit phone, tissues, earphones, lip balm, etc. so they are handy during the flight. And I use a flatter crossbody purse than what you show, and that can be hidden under the jacket when you board.

From Perth, Australia…. Just found that our planes have cracked down and my next trip on Batik Air only allows one 20x30x40 cm, 7 kilo carry on! And I just bought an American underseat bag which absolutely won’t!
Oh my! That is tiny and no weight at all!
You are spot on! 4 wheelers (spinners) are not suitable as personal item, they rarely meet the size requirements and even if they do, the wheels take up so much space! You end up with very little space to pack your stuff. Great video Courtney, thanks for the tips! We've also travel with Spirit for over 10 years, never had any problems with them!

That was a great and efficient way to pack the American Tourister Bag. Most videos just stuff the bag and congratulate themselves on managing to zipper it close. They really don't account for the fact that it is soft and will bulge.
Thank you! I’ve had to push this thing in the sizer a few times and it’s a struggle if I stuff it full! I learned my lesson the first time and made sure I didn’t stuff so it bulged! I make all my videos with the goal in mind of helping other people pack efficiently and save money!

Magnifying mirror!
Mine is my asthma machine I have to travel with that when I go out of Summer three hours or out of state just in case if I have a asthma attack I could be on my machine but I do have to bring my other stuff like my inhalers.
I had to upgrade to the AT spinner under-seat bag for mobility issues. Unfortunately Spirt doesn’t fly here. I can never without my iPad. It has music, books and games , it really save me a lot of space.
Loving the videos! I, too, was sent over by Laurie. My "have to" pack item is my small tablet, so I can watch movies/videos, read books, and play games.
Love it! Need something to keep busy in the airport.

There is something called a “stow and go” there are two sizes and the smaller one is a perfect size for an under seat suit case, when you get to your destination just hang your stow and go and you are done unpacking! Happy Travels!

I use the roll up plastic compression bag for my dirty clothes. Works great and keeps them condensed and seperrate, and slips into that mesh area available in most cases.

Great idea. Especially if you have spots on them so they need to soak for a while Then in an airtight bag with dish soap on the spot it will help remove the next time you wash them. Thanks for the tip

My 1 must item is not makeup, hair, or cosmetic related. SURGE protector is my #1! I can purchase anything else I need from a CVS or Walmart. #2 woolite dry cleaning or Washeze laundry sheets. I’m a minimalist packer and usually only pack for seven days. I do laundry wherever I’m at, even if it’s a cruise ship.

Hi, curious who you cruise on; most do not allow surge protectors. I've seen several confiscated. Regular extension cords or usb/outlet plug ins are still OK.
My Delsey small padded bag is a similar size that I use for a month. My Airbnb bookings always have a washing machine. A small cross body bag has all I need on the flight. A month through the UK from next month, from 🇦🇺. Thx for adding to my excitement.

I going on spirits in July . So these tips are helpful . I have a purse that going used as my carry on bag . I can put pair nice shoes in it , small bag of clothing and my travel shampoo and conditioner/ makeup. 😁😁

A brand-new subscriber here... Always glad to get new ideas for packing efficiently, especially carry-on only (domestically at this time)...my ongoing challenge to myself! 😊❤️🧳✈️💺💯
My must-have item is a book. If I don’t have space for a physical one I only bring my kindle, but usually bring a physical too, and I use my phone as an iPod filled with audiobooks with a pair of earbuds & headphones for driving/flying. I consider those items EDC as well.
I’ve never traveled just carry on (muchless just personal item) but my parents had my brother and me pack together in a bag one size larger than carry on my entire life. I learned early on how to pack lightly, to the point sometimes I allow myself to over pack a some because I take so little in the first place.
I once went to a three day conference in college and one of the girls took the largest suitcase possible and 2-3 full weeks worth of clothes! She bought a bunch of books and materials while there and I had to repack her bag so it would all fit.
Even though I pack lightly anyway I enjoy watching carry on travel videos. One of my favorite things is seeing different people/s must have items & their “hacks” for liquids. I plan on getting a carry on size case next time I go traveling, now my brother and I no longer share a bag I need a new one lol.

I’m flying Spirit on Saturday. While it’s not my #1 choice of favorites, it gets me to where I need to go. I’m not looking for luxury on short flights.
So given that, I had NO idea THAT part of my suitcase had a zipper!
I just looked and found it. Whad’ya know?
Now I’ll see how I can utilize that space myself with my flip flops as I pack for FL ( 🤩), from MN (🤮)!
I bought my husband compression cubes. I love my packing cubes, so I thought he may like them as well? If not, I can use them too.
Not sure about the rest of you out there, but packing for trips and flying is part of the fun for me when leaving for [especially] a warm destination for vacation!

So I just went to the airport 2 days before I fly on Spirit and I wanted to see if my personal “ rolling backpack” with the 4 wheels would fit inside the personal item sizer… guess what it fits!! The wheels rolled right in if you put it sideways. My friend who drove and waited for me while I ran in quickly thought I made a mistake and sized it inside the carry-on sizer, but I made sure it was the personal one.
Good!!!! The wheels always worry me the most when finding a personal size bag. You definitely found a needles in a haystack with the 4 wheels.

I just returned from a trip to Sedona. I used frontier airlines and used the take off bag. I packed less than you and It did not work for me. I understand that part of the problem was thicker clothes being it was colder and I’m not as small as you. I appreciated your video however and can always learn. Thank you.
I need to bring my large travel scarf, I use it as a blanket on the ride to and from vacation. It also has a pocket for my passport

I believe I put it on its side. It doesn’t matter how you fit it in the sizer as long as you can fit your bag in the sizer!

Hello from the Big Woods of Northern Minnesota! (Three hours north of MSP. We travel out of BRD; free parking, minimal TSA process. The worst is: AM flight departs at 7:00AM, so we have to get up at 4:00AM!) I HAVE to travel with a CPAP. I don’t use it in flight, but it’s a travel neccessity!
Why hello there! Greetings from the Appalachian mountains on the Pennsylvania/West Virginia boarder! I feel your pain! We too have 7am flights to Orlando. It’s so tough to get up and moving for it. Our local airport is the same. It’s so nice, free parking, low lines, quick tsa.

Easiest way to measure is just lay it down on the floor and use a measuring tape. It’ll get you a rough estimate of size!

I have that bag and love love it. I take my meds and battery pack for my back. I love that bag.. I got it at Kohls. I take a shall around my neck and have a sweater on when I check in I use is for a pillow and the shall as a blanket. I also use the plastic bags to roll my clothes and I take my eep quilting and my phone. I fly American and use there credit card so I have a check bag for free and I have that bag and I carry a backpack. I travel from Wilmington NC to Az. My lay over is Charlotte or Dallas and I have to walk to the other gates and I am disabled so I could never make it without this bag with wheels. Love it..

I flew Spirit and enjoyed it the flight attendants were nice and I brought on a carry on bag regular size they didn’t say anything a lot People carry on was bigger then mine they didn’t say anything
It’s definitely hit or miss. I’ve been pulled a few times to check my bag in the sizer, but there’s a ton of flights that I never get asked to check my bag. I think it just depends on the gate agents.

A great idea indeed! I've always hated when people put their shoes in the bag/suitcase without a shoe bag or anything. Nasty! This makes it so easy to have your stuff divided.
I think you'd like a shirt square more than a packing cube or a vacuum bag. The square comes with a folder so your shirts will be extra flat and crease free.

@@breakawayonabudget aren't we all! I've been through all of the methods - vacuum bags, packing cubes, compression bags, and all kinds of folding, rolling etc., but it's also exciting when I see another way of packing.
My one item is my iPod Touch. It’s my camera, entertainment, computer & it takes up little space.
Also travel must is my RooSport...it’s a travel wallet that fits over your waistband. It holds a small wallet, cash, passport, phone, lipstick & more. I put it in my carry on going through security then on my waistband where it stays. Since it’s on me, I feel more secure & the airline doesn’t know its there.

Question about the sizer, I may be flying an airline with 21, 14 by 9 limit. But my bag with the two wheels seem like it’s a few centimeters larger, with the wheels sticking out a tad. Does that make a difference with a sizer? 16 by 14 by 9ish(under 9 1/2.) or somewhatish. Is about the size of my bag. It’s a two wheel under seat bag. HELP!
Most airlines make you include the wheels when checking it for size and/or in the sizer. It sounds like your measurements of 21x14x9 limit are for a carryon. I don’t find that airlines are that strict for carryons. They are mostly strict on the budget airlines that only allow a free personal item.
If you’re worried about the 9ish measurement, can you squish the bag down? If you can squish it a little bit and get it to 9 inches, you’ll be fine! If it fits in the sizer, it’s good!

I just purchased two UnderSeat roller bags (13.75 x 16 x 8.5), do you see any potential issues with using them as both the carry-on & personal items? Thanks for the advice in advance :)
I would worry about that 8.5 inch measurement if you are flying Frontier. Sprit sizers give you a little more wiggle room so you can get away with that extra .5 inches.

Honestly? Probably a duffle bag. The duffle doesn’t have the wheels and telescoping handle taking up space so that will be a few extra places you’ll be able to fit more in.
I think it really comes down to comfort level. If I’m running across Atlanta (like I’ve done before) I want a rolling bag. Not a duffle bag that digs into my should and swings around smacking people. If I have my son with me, a rolling bag is easier for me.
The duffle I feel I can fit more in without trying. I recommend it for “beginner packers” 😅. Since we only pack a personal item, my duffle can be pretty heavy and dig into my shoulder. I have another video where I pack a duffle bag I bought off Amazon! Check that one out to compare!

I see Kohl's has this brand almost identical bag but the dimensions seem off so not sure if it will fit the 18x14x8. I'll probably just end up taking a duffel type of bag.
Duffles with soft side are much easier to stuff inside the sizer if they ask you!
I’m that weird person that takes a tape measure with me to buy luggage 😅. I got tired of reading the dimensions, thinking the suitcase would work only to figure out it’s an inch too wide!

Hi from New York City. I can't go without one of my stuff animals. (Don't judge I'm 69 years young!)Anyhoo, I'm taking Spirit to Las Vegas in May, God willing. I don't want to pay for a carry on or in the case of Spirit, a personal bag. (Not my first time taking Spirit)my personal under the seat bag is London Fog soft side
My hair straighteners I found a lightweight carry on but not so small packed it but in winter had to buy more and finally ended up leaving so much behind as was away 10 months and no address in Uk. My bag was so light empty but finally bust ..my fault.. hot it expertly fixed. My meds unfortunately take up too much room alone on a bigger trip. Took ltop gave it away as heavy but then webstick corrupted and cloud hadnt saved ething so.lost so many memories!! A lesson learnt. Nxt time even if lose stuff in Uk will just take personal size end of story then no bag losing etc that s happened to me and so many!also have new ltop and charger etc more trainers 2 cameras!

I’m not sure you are using the compression bag right. Undo all the zippers, fill it full, zip the first zipper, then zip the second one which squeezes everything even smaller.
I have a 4 wheel bag that fits!. I got it on Amazon ans it's a 16' inch roller bag. Very tiny

I like all your suggestions. One thing I have a problem with....when I roll my shirts they become wrinkled. Do you have this issue?
I do have some wrinkles with my clothes! As much as I try to roll straight some wrinkles creep in. I combat this by watching the materials of my clothes. I try and only take clothes that the wrinkles fall out easily.
Another tip is if it’s too wrinkled, I’ll hang the item of clothing in the bathroom while I’m taking a hot shower and basically steam the wrinkles out!

After watching your video, I purchased the American Tourister Burst Max Trio underseater from Kohl’s. The dimensions are 18.5 x 14 x 8.5, a little over but I hope it still works for spirit. I take my trip in August!

I use the smallest Samsonite spinner case and love that I never have to check it. Just an fyi, when traveling in Europe, some airlines will weigh your little luggage. If it’s too heavy it gets checked. Not cool but that’s their rules
I had a friend fly Ryan Air and told me about them weighing her bag! Ive never traveled in Europe so that was a shock to me! I think Frontier is starting to impose a weight limit on their personal items too. I agree not cool, but you gotta follow the rules.

I have the same spinner and I was recently charged $99 for carry-on because the wheels bulges out to 9 inches instead of 8 inches.
@@kevinp8108 that stinks! Sorry to hear. Yeah these airlines can be sticklers. Air France weighed my daughters carry on sized luggage even though it easily fit the dimensions. She was overweight a bit, 12kg limit, so we had to pay €60. Total money grab
@@ginay4878 - I quietly paid the $99 carry-on fee even though it wasn't fair because I was not charged on three prior roundtrip flights and on my outbound flight on the same airline. I knew the gate agents were paid a commission of $10 USD for every $99 they collected at the gate so I didn't bother arguing with them. The next day I wrote to the airline's complaint department about my experience and they agreed that the one inch overage on the wheels was excessive and they refunded the $99. Had the airline not refund the fee, I would have filed a chargeback claim with my credit card company for an unfair and inconsistent luggage policy!
I’m actually shocked they refunded your money! I know people have only had a cloth handle stick out of the size and they wouldn’t refund their money. I’d be very careful on which airline you take it on. The budget airlines all state their size requirements include handles and wheels.

Hey that bag looks plenty for a day trip for me and the baby, I have to travel from Miami to New York multiple times to see someone, and I wonder is this airline a good choice if I don’t need to pack but I am carrying a lap-infant, and re they easy with taking the baby stroller onboard or do they require paying for carrying the stroller too?
Let me put it this way. My son just turned 5 and he’s flown 13 times 😅. They have all been on spirit airlines too.
We always check our stroller and car seat at the ticket counter. We’ve never had a problem with them! Nope, you never get charged for a stroller or car seat. They also let you take on a diaper bag for baby that doesn’t count as your personal item!
I have a video for spirit airline tips and tricks and also one for traveling with children. Check those two out! You must be flexible and do your homework on spirit. They are cheap but if you start adding on bags, food, seat selection, etc they can be more expensive than other airlines.
Thanks for clarifying that it's only a free 1 bag ( personal item). There are others that include a free carry on & free personal item is implied. How much does it weigh after you packed ( I suplose you can reply when you get a chance to pack similarly again. It's just that Alitalia limits the size & weight ( 11 or 17 lbs. diff sites says differently and Alitalia didnt specify. How much does the luggage weigh when empty ? thx
Ohhh it’s most definitely more than 11 or 17 pounds. It weighs at least 4-5 pound empty. For a weight limit like that, I would try a weekender bag instead. Very lightweight.

I do! My inlaws take backpacks all the time! I have a backpack that has a slot for my laptop when I woke while I travel. It’s actually bigger taller than 18 inches, but I don’t pack it full so I can smoosh the top down to fit in the sizer if they ever ask. 🥰

I really don’t have an item I must have. My cell maybe...but that’s a given lol. I’m using one large suitcase that I paid for online. I will pack myself and my daughter. Do you know if you can squash a bag down in the personal item slot or it has to slide in perfectly. I have a Reebok locker room bag.
If it squishes down in then it fits! 🙌 just make sure you are able to smoosh it down in the sizer and the entire bag fits with nothing sticking out 😃
Don’t forget, each ticketed passenger gets a free personal item!

The checked bag is great for your liquids that are over 3.4 ozs (or 100 ml). It’s always a good idea to pack a few extra clothes in your personal item just incase your luggage gets lost. We’ve never had a bag lost *knock on wood* but I always do this just in case.

Oh it’s not that tiny compared to Aer Lingus. Their personal island item is 10” x 13” x 8 can you get all that stuff in a bag that size?
I just had a friend that flew them! He bought a ticket with a carryon and the dad just had a little bag for snacks and an iPad!
I’ll have to see if I can find a bag to fit those dimensions to try!

From Perth, Australia…. Just found that our planes have cracked down and my next trip on Batik Air only allows one 20x30x40 cm, 7 kilo carry on! And I just bought an American underseat bag which absolutely won’t!
Oh wow! I would look for a duffle or weekender bag to keep down the weight of the bag itself and be flexible with how much you can fit.

What ya think about Travel Pro Compact. I think it's 17x12x8 has 4 wheels. Height to wheel is 18 what ya think about the size. Would it fit the personal spirit box? Anyone ever used it please help me out thanks
My first question is why do you want 4 wheels? Wheels that aren’t imbedded in the suitcase take up valuable inches in your personal item. Especially important if you’re only packing in a personal item.
If the heigh to the wheel is 18 inches, then the wheels are in excess of the 18 inches and would absolutely not fit in the sizer.
I honestly just don’t think this bag will fit. Rule of thumb is if it have 4 wheels, it usually doesn’t fit for a personal item.
Ironically enough, I’m starting to check out the travel pro luggage to see if any of those fit in the spirit dimensions.

Oh! If you already have it, just take a tape measure and measure it! You have to measure the entire bag including the wheels. I couldn’t find it online so I wasn’t able to see exactly which bag you have.
I love a 4 wheel roller. Rolls so much nicer than 2 wheels. Just with a personal item, 4 wheels take up so much void space that you can’t use for packing.
I just found this new company called take off luggage. I just sized it last night at the airport and it fits perfectly! The catch is that it does have 4 wheels that are removable. You have to remove the wheels to fit in spirits sizer, but the suitcase itself without wheels takes up the full personal item dimensions!
I’ll have a video review in a couple weeks about this new suitcase, but if you’re in a hurry I’d check them out!

These bag they claim to be compact even have a compact zipper.... now I'm worried bout the wheels not fitting the luggage itself is pretty sleek. On Nordstrom website it's under Pilot Air™ Elite 17" Expandable Compact... some reviews on there says 19x12x8.5. Geez I'm in trouble lol. What I can't travel without is my CPap machine. I have a traveling bag for it, but I am planning a trip where I want to put 5 days of clothes and my CPap in a backpack so I plan to get compression bags for the clothes.
My husband has one too! He has a nice travel bag for his. Don’t forget this is considered medical equipment and does not count as bag! You can take your cpap bag plus a personal item.

This is correct. Just flew for a five day four night trip with the American Tourister as my personal item and my cpap in a separate bag as a medical device. Didn’t have to check either bag and there were no extra charges. But you can’t co-mingle any other items in the cpap bag, it has to be just the machine, tubing, mask with no unrelated items like extra clothes or jewelry, etc. packed in with it.

Dumb question. Is the Tourister bag you linked to the exact same as yours? I know you said yours is older and was just curious on sizing. Other vid’s showed their bags, but then they are NLA . Just curious if this linked bag fits perfect in the size checker.
It is! They have been in and out of stock so much lately with covid. The black just came back in stock while the purple like I have hasn’t been in stock for a while.
I did double check and it says I purchased the purple suitcase in October 2018! It should still be the exact same one. Definitely measure it if/when you buy it just to be sure. I always double check myself with sizing on suitcases. 😁

Good question! I had most in my liquids bag. I have these fun little jars I found that I decant my toiletries into for travel. I'm thinking of making a video for packing up my liquids bag 🤔🤔
