  • The weather is finally warming up, making the water temps rise, especially in shallow chit ridden creeks.. I only had a few hours, but it was nice, so I scaled down the hill to a couple BUSY highway bridges n search of some greasy crick feesh. Took some effort, but we got it done. PAAA POWWW!!!

    I know this may sound crazy but...a cheap and weirdly great bait for catfish is putting a bar of Ivory soap cut into small cubes in a ziplock bag with red pepper powder and garlic powder. Works so freakn good. Longer the soap is left in the spices the better.....although you can catch em with un-spiced Ivory soap.

    Hey Josh,
    next time you do a catch & cook, you should try steamed fish! It's not any more difficult than your usual deep fried fillets, but it is healthier. I make mine with ginger, scallions and soy sauce. Cheers!

      The best fish I've cooked was in Baja California Sur, catching corbinas every 30 seconds with the snails found there, seasoning with salt found on rocks from evaporated seawater and grilling the fish over an open fire. Absolutely amazing! Your recipe is delicious for all types of fish though!

    I think you might be having the same problem I sometimes have with circle hooks, namely, the habit of trying to set the hook the same way you do with "J" hooks (i.e., too quickly). With circle hooks, you need gradually applied pressure for the hooks to set properly. If you use too much pressure applied too quickly, these hooks will often fail. Like some other commenters have noted, the double-action circle hooks are more forgiving.

    • @mr.onethirtyeight5088
      @mr.onethirtyeight5088 2 роки тому

      I believe you have to do like a side sweeping motion with circle hooks instead your natural instinct to go straight up. I know it prevents gut hooking but the fish throw those circle hooks way, way to easy! If you just cut the line of a gut hooked fish they will survive. I've caught two fish that were already gut hooked at some point earlier and they were fine. J hooks it is!

    • @twinjacob1
      @twinjacob1 2 роки тому +1

      @@mr.onethirtyeight5088 I am largely in agreement with you. Circle hooks are not an effective remedy for gut-hooking if you allow fish to run too much (free spool line) before setting the hook. The key to avoiding gut-hooking is fishing with a tight line or tight drag (e.g., with your rod in a rod holder) because this method hooks the fish before it can swallow the bait/hook. The only good reason to use a circle hook (or modified circle hook) is if you think it will have a higher hookup ratio for your method of fishing (tight line or free spool). You need an appropriately wide gap between the hook point and the shaft of the hook or a circle hook will often pull right out of the fish's mouth. Circle hooks will also fail if your line and rod are too tight/stiff. You need gradually-applied pressure to allow a circle hook to move into position and set into the fish's mouth. You can accomplish this with a stretchier line (mono) or a rod tip that flexes a bit more (with a braided line). I think the angle of the rod during hookset is less of a factor.

      It’s fine everybody chill out. Some of the respect the fish/don’t harm the fish is excessive when you are actively trying to stab a hook into him. I get be respectful to animals blah blah, but if you are really that worried about a fish dying and you really want to respect them, you should stop fishing.
