    It's so lovely to see a horse taken on her own terms - as you say, you can't judge a horse based on what you're told about her experiences or her behaviour. Very informative, thank you for the video!

    Could it also be as taking the bridle off at height the bit has fell and hit her teeth on the way out which can chip teeth and its very painful. I see this done everyday and I feel for that soft mouth full of nerves and tissue, All ways take your time taking the bridle off and wait for the horse to drop the bit and open his mouth to gently drop out. Hit your own teeth with a spoon see how it feels imagine what it must feel like with a full lump of metal. Love your work Barry blessings to you.

    Barry, you look exhausted. Try to take care of yourself. One of the reasons I've always wanted to see the progress of a horse from the moment it enters the yard is to show EXACTLY how much time and patience it takes. But to do that you need someone to film without it taking up time from your work. Who is not supposed to be doing the horses too. I think old wise horses may be given treats but no others. A lead horse does not pass food over to a subordinate. Quite the reverse. So if anyone wants to be a leader - NO TREATS.

      Don't worry Anna! This is archive footage from several years ago. Barry is currently recovering from his knee replacement but feeling much better by the day.

    Hi Barry , will you write a book one day of your horsemanship wisdom?

      Unfortunately probably not! This virtual 'book' of videos will have to do!

    Reading some of the comments. I have seen horses that have had no bad treatment deciding not to cooperate . People think it is always abuse, but not necessarily. If they walk over you don't respect your space barge in to and push you around, your going to have other issues most likely, not always but likely.
    Some people think it's cute when the horse decides to go barging into the stall till they are squished. Then they get mad and blame the horse. Lots of info out their on this problem, would love to see how Barry and Rea do it for sure though.

    I know dogs, not horses, but it is the same thing. Treats can help with providing a basic structure , a basic connection, at the beginning of training. But in the end it is all about patience and firmness and growing trust. Because if the animal trusts you you can do anything. I never use treats.

    The mare thinks bad stuff is coming when she sees the bridle. I wonder what her interpretation of what happened when her worry began.

    This is surprisingly common. Good job on her though I can see her attitude is becoming softer.

    Maybe is it cos she can’t eat properly..? So she don’t want it on.

      Hi Susan, she was like this in or out of the stable so there was likely something else at work (although that could be one factor).

    She pulls away because she does not trust you, simple as that.

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  2 роки тому +4

      Yes, does not trust 'yet' - that is correct. The whole point of this video is that due to bad past experiences, she associates bridling with pain and that we are trying to overcome this by gaining her trust that we will not hurt her with the bridle or otherwise. This is not something that can be fixed overnight, these things take a lot of time and patience to overcome.
