Dan Severn was the first to show that freestyle wrestling is effective in the field of ultimate fighting sports. Breaking the stereotypes and backbones of his opponents, Severn managed to elevate himself to the rank of legend in the pantheon of early MMA years. Today, we look back at his best years in the UFC.

I remember these days at the start of the mid 90s. It was grappler versus striker and Dan Severn proved why a big, strong wrestler could take out anybody. And, with Royce Gracie, proved the effectiveness of grappling over striking alone. So every striker had to incorporate that into their style to be successful. Hence, leading to the evolution of MMA as we know it.
