Jessie: Thanks for every Video and tip I received from you. Cannot thank you enough. Github announced today : OCLP 1.0.0 for Sonoma. They are now working on the drivers needed, I believe won't be long before we can fully use Sonoma. ✌
Auto companies are required to support cars to at least ten years old. Some of those Mac models are less than five years old.
unfortunately correct....
"Auto companies are required to support cars to at least ten years old." - but not by adding new functions.
And Ventura will get security updates for a couple more years, so the 2017 Macs will get updated Ventura builds.
@@TheDanEdwards also correct ;-)
@@TheDanEdwardswhy compare automobile to a computer system? Apple should atleast support it's models upto 10 years. This is why Mac doesn't have a second hand value
A automobile is a moving object, with a engine computers, radios and speakers, they all require maintenance, cars are built so well it will sell for long and make them a lot of profit, it’s not like computers. It’s an entirely different situation. As the world progresses, more system requirements need to be met, the same does not apply to cars, (currently) hope you get what I’m saying.
Jessie, thank you for the video. It inspired me to take the plunge and upgrade to Ventura on my 2009 Mac Pro 4,1. At first, the Bluetooth did not work. I reinstalled Open Core Legacy Patcher and re-ran the Key Patcher and now everything works great. I am waiting until the official release of Sonoma before upgrading to that. Thank you once again and keep making great videos . . .
thank you - great to hear!
This answered a lot of questions I had been searching for, thank you.
as always GREAT VIDEO JESSIE!!!! I'm loving Sonoma with my cMP's!!!! OCLP v0.6.9 Nightly!!!!
My Macbook Pro (2017) with desktop class Quad Core i7 is not supported, Macbook Air (2018) dual core Low powered i5 is supported. Well done Apple! 😢
unfortunately...
Thank God I found your channel!. I was already tempting to install macOs sonoma RC on my MBP 9,2. I will just wait for our hardworking developers of OCLP for this issue to be resolve. I will stay on Ventura for the mean time.
welcome! good choice - sharing appreciated ;-)
Excellent video. Clears the fog on what OS upgrades really work and what to avoid.
thank you! sharing appreciated ;-)
I really can't thank you enough for your videos, they are so very helpful for those of us using older Macs. I have a 2011 21.5 inch, and I have it running Ventura currently. I can deal with the Bluetooth and Maps, and everything else seems fine on it. I actually watched the entire Apple event on it today. It really annoys me how just a handful of developers can get newer versions of MacOS running pretty decently on these older Macs, but Apple just pulls the plug after only a few years. I'm actually kind of worried about what is going to happen when MacOS no longer supports ANY Intel based Mac at all. Its going to be PowerPC all over again...I look forward to your more in depth review of Sonoma on these older machines!
I'm absolutely with you, I just hope the MacPro 2019 (Intel) keeps Apple supporting Intel Macs quite long....
@@JessiesFlying That's true! With the 2019 Mac Pro, I'm hoping that MacOS will support Intel chips for awhile longer. Even after that, we may have a Sorbet Leopard type OS where they borrow certain aspects of whatever MacOS doesn't support Intel to build on an existing x86 version. Or, M series Silicon will suffer the same fate as PowerPC, and will eventually fall behind x86, making Apple use those chips again...
@@93Volvo240 we will see....
some interesting findings there, thanks doc
Thank you for this very helpful video ❤
You can do an OS Patch and get to macOS 14. Here are the models that can support macOS 14 via patching
iMac - 2012 or later.
MacBook Air - Late 2008 or later.
MacBook Pro - Early 2008 or later.
Mac Mini - Late 2009 or later. (Early 2009 requires 4GB of RAM)
Mac Pro - Early 2008 or later.
awesome Jessie. i have sonoma running on three of my macs aswell
Great! Keep me updated with your findings!
actually. my macbook pro 2011 13" 6GB RAM HD3000 refuses to complete the sonoma beta 4 install. ends in a loop on first reboot. using OCLP 0.6.8 @@JessiesFlying

I’m running Ventura 13.6 on my early 2011 iMac 21.5 inch, also I used the latest OpenCore Legacy Patcher 0.68 and seems to run great and Bluetooth is working well.
great to hear - was the Bluetooth upgraded?
Nope it was the opencore patcher Ver. 0.68 that updated the bluetooth and made it work without any problems. It’s been running great!! 😁@@JessiesFlying
@@marklyngstad8245 great to hear!
Hello All! Is it safe to install the new system on an unsupported device? I mean is it safe to log in with icloud account and so on! May thanks for the answers! Best regards
I’ve had no problems with using a new systrem on any of the unsupported Macs I have. running Ventura 13.6 on my 2011 iMac and it’s running smooth. Hope this helps a bit. I feel it’s safe.@@gaborvas3258
I was hoping to hear in this video about OS for my recently purchased (09/16/2023) trash can. It’s one of the maxed out 12 core models w/ 64gig off RAM and dual 700 GPU cards.
Sonoma looks promising, depending if the devs can add graphic acceleration for those old GPUs. if not, stay with Monterey...
That 30 second limit is quite the firewall. It might even get me out of the house for a change.
Hi Jessy, thx for the great helpful videos "using old macs". I have one question. Can I carry out the update via System Preferences on my Mac Pro 5.1 (OCLP v.0.6.8) Monterey to Ventura?
yes you can, but it will download the full file (about 12 GB) as incremental updates doesn't work...
Couldn’t help but notice the 108 for your local temp. Sending big sympathy. It was 100 with 71% humidity yesterday in Fort Lauderdale and I did not do well with it.
yeah - since this week it's going down to about 105 and I hope it stays like this - but only 30% humidity. "It's a dry heat" 😀
Mine is one of the 2012/2013 imacs i think because it can go up to 10.15.7 catalina
Will you redo this video now that OCLP 1.0.0 is out? Thanks for all you do! Much appreciation from California 👍
It already is! ua-cam.com/video/3VB19StEhXg/v-deo.htmlsi=AafDQO_PySuyM6aP
Jessie you are doing great thank you very much for your efforts. I have a question for all if you don't mind. I have a late 2015 iMac computer with macOS Ventura 13.4 (22F66) installed. The operating system is not installed on the hard drive in my computer. I added an SSD and installed it on the SSD for faster performance. I used OpenCore Patcher to update Catalina to Ventura. I had a problem. When I tried to update using OpenCore Patcher, the update automatically went to the hard drive even though the operating system is not on the hard drive. I had a lot of trouble installing on the SSD. How can an iMac with the operating system installed on an SSD be upgraded from Ventura to Sonoma without any problems using OpenCore Patcher?
so why don't you install the SSD instead of the harddrive in the iMac? there are videos about how to do that (i.e. iFixit). when you have donwloaded the installer and start it, you can choose where to install it, then choose SSD...
Just a remark unrelated. Still running Monterey 12.6.8. on my Pro 2010. I saw an update message today in System preferences. Of course for Ventura and then for others: 12.6.7! 🤣
Very informative! Is your wife going to let you install OS Sonoma on her 2017 iMac? I have a 27" one and I'm anxious to see how it works. Thank you.
Me too
I did not dare to ask... yet ;-)
@@JessiesFlying I'm also curious about the 2017 iMacs - what works, what breaks. Just promise your wife if you break it, you'll buy her a new one. 😃
😆@@microdickie
Since this nice gentleman tested, open core now supports the newest Sonoma 4.3
So maybe some issues in this review do not apply anymore.
Absolutely, check out my newest video

Hello Jessie! i am tryin to upgrade an imac 9,1 from OSX 10.6.8, but the opencore legacy patcher is unable to run on this version of OSX, what can i do in order to upgrade this osx to a newer one?
As always thank you for your support!
use recovery for latest official macOS and then use dosdude1's patcher
Hi Jesse! Any chance to get a tip on reliable graphics card upgrades on iMac 27 mid 2011? At the moment I am using Monterey with open core legacy patcher and I am considering upgrading my iMac GPU if this would help with issues mentioned in your video (maps, etc.) or after an upgade of GPU to give my iMac a chance to run Ventura to extend its lifespan for bit more
If you don’t play games, you do a external GPU connecting thru Thunderbolt
the only GPU I know of is the one from the 2012 iMac, which is Metal capable...
I Have 2 X iMac mid 2011 27inch with i7, 32GB Ram both with SSD’s, Bluetooth upgrade by OSX Wifi and upgraded Metal cards and running Ventura flawlessly with magic keyboard and track pad, looking forward to see how it goes with Sonoma wants it is released
There are plenty of choices over at Macrumors, which has a huge and long-running thread on GPU upgrades for this iMac. The difficulty is getting hold of one and deciding how much money you want to pour into a 12 year computer, especially if Sonoma turns out to be the last Intel compatible OS that Apple will release.
I wish @Luke_Miani would make this kind of video on iPhones instead of raving about how the i15 is the biggest upgrade ever and would look great in his Porsche ;-). (all in fun)
thank you! maybe @luke_miani features my video - that would be a great boost for my channel - do you ask him? ;-)
@@JessiesFlying I will
Thank you for your videos! They are very helpful. I've installed mac os Monterey on my macbook 7,1 (mid 2010 unibody) but I'm failed to install Sonoma. Even using an usb hub installer crashes in the language selection page and doesn´t come back after reboot. Is it possible to install Sonoma in this model ? Do I need to replace my wi-fi/bluetooth card ? Because the docs says that wi-fi/bluetooth is not supported. Thank you!
I wouldn’t recommend Macs older than 2012 going higher than Big Sur - if Monterey runs good keep it that way
Hi Jessie, i'm sure this is a simple issue. When i boot into the EFI and chose the install of the MacOS (Ventura) i can't find a why to get to the MacOS utilities, i'm stuck on the MacOS Recovery screen. This means i can't chose the drive i want to install to. Hope you can help.
so does it show the install screen?
@@JessiesFlying Hi I've discovered I can't get to the MacOS recovery at all. My recovery partition seems busted. I'll join your discord
Thanks for all your help. I have a problem after updating to Sonoma, Bluetooth is not working. It turns on and after a few seconds shots off in settings. does not look for any devices when it is on for a few seconds either. Any help? Thanks
Did you use v1.0.1 and tried NVRAM reset?
I have a 2010 iMac upgrading GPU to metal and running Sonoma very well
Thanks for your information. What's about the iMac 5K 27" from 2017? Is ist possible an useful to install Sonoma?
I have to ask my wife to try it.... but I still don't dare ;-)

you're welcome!
I don’t use apps on my MacAir and I only use the Google Chrome Browser. I’m going to keep on trucking.
Hi Jessie, I have question about the iMac 2011 for which you suggest to upgrade to Os Big Sur with Open Core patcher. Are you able to upgrade to Big Sur on iMac 2011 with full blue tooth and Wifi function or do you need to upgrade the blue tooth -wifi card after upgrading to Big Sur ? Maps and air drop or airplay functions are still working ? What are the reasons you didn't recommend graphic card upgrade in iMac 2011 ? Can you illuminate me please. Thanks.
I didn't do any update and WiFi and BT works. I do not recommend an upgrade as you need some hardware skills and the parts are quite expensive
@@JessiesFlying I have got hardware the metal graphic card and internal blue tooth and wifi card already. I am ready to do hard ware upgrade when I have free time. I would appreciate your advice regarding the steps in hard ware upgrade and any need for V.Bios update before dissambling iMac or after ? I have upgrade the hard drive to internal SSD in 2016 successfully. I have some manual skills and patience to dissamble iMac and reassemble in correct way. i can watch some ifixit instructions and Utube videos. I just need some guidance from you to do it in the right way. Thanks very much for answering my questions. If you can share some lights into my dark territory of computer illiteracy about
hard ware upgrade because I am not from the computer field. I am just trying to upgrade from my desire because I cannot use new air pods with my iMac in High Sierra. Thank you.
@@sko556 I advise strongly to watch iFixit videos as they explain it very detailed
@@JessiesFlying Thanks Jessie. I want to ask one more question about one option instead of graphic card upgrade. If I can update to Os Big Sur or Monterey using open core from High Sierra without graphic card upgrade, will the wifi-blue tooth card upgrade to 4.0 will be helpful for listening to air pods like air pod Max or no change ? Thanks
@@sko556 this should work also with the original Bluetooth module, but I cannot test that at the moment

should I upgrade my MacBook Air 2017 to Sonoma? is it safe? kindly make a video to install macOS Sonoma stable version :)
yes you should when it's released officially
Is it recommended to install Sonoma on the MacBook Pro 13 2017?
absolutely, but wait for the final release and a new version of OpenCore
I have a strange situation.
I am running a late 2014 iMac with Ventura running on Open Core. Just for fun, I went to the software updates in the System Settings and it tells me I can install Sonoma and gives me the option to install it! Is this normal?
Yes, as OpenCore fakes a supported model. But wait until I tested Sonoma and the new OpenCore Legacy patcher will be released on October 2nd
Thanks. It never did this going to Ventura.
@@user-vw7pt9yi9k maybe OpenCore Legacy patcher changed some settings lately…🤔
I dont think you should punish yourself by putting sonoma on older macs, monterey is fine for 2015s . Maybe the 2017s I would give it a try.
It’s only checking what is possible… 😬
Can anyone give me advice? I’m broke as a joke and have been wanting a MacBook for years. Well my friend has one for sale but it’s a 2016 which means next year it will no longer be supported. I only really surf the web and apps don’t really use it for anything special but I am nervous not knowing what will happen when I can’t update it anymore. Its a good price, one I can actually afford. Is it still worth getting as I see a lot of people with even older models than that.
Hope to hear back thanks
It’s not supported right now but it either runs fine with Monterey or with OpenCore - anyone experiences?
If I find issues after upgrading to Sonoma, is it possible to repent and go back to the latest Apple support OS? 😅
Only via clean install
i have a question, will im still able to use iMessage and stuffs?
Yes, that still will work
@@JessiesFlying yes i can confirm myself that still work, thanks for answering my question
Is it true, on M macs , when internal SSD fail, you can’t even boot from external SSD, so the M macs just become e-waste ?
i'm not sure, but I heard that as well.... anyone?
