  • This is the story of the Honno-ji Incident, the basis for the new Kitano Takeshi film “Kubi.” It’s the Sengoku period in Japan, the era of warring states. Ruthless daimyo warlord Oda Nobunaga is the most powerful man in Japan, ruling a third of the country. And Hideyoshi is one of his most trusted commanders. When another Oda commander, Akechi Mitsuhide, turns against Nobunaga and forces him to commit suicide at Honno-ji Temple in Kyoto, the stage is set for a battle between Hideyoshi’s army and Akechi’s forces for control of the Oda domain and the future of Japan.

The most amazing thing about the Honno-ji incident it's that it's one of those event in history in which the destiny of a nation was determined by a few decisions and fortunate events. If Hideyoshi hadn't intercepted the message sent by Mitsuhide to the Mori clan, learning about the betrayal before than any other of Odas generals, things could have been all to different.

Love all your videos. Hoping to see more Japanese history ones. Lots of bullshido on UA-cam, your Imjin War videos are a breath of fresh air from it all.

I recently saw this movie on youtube. It was pretty strong stuff. He strips back all the pomp and leaves the rawness of the times. Good, but disturbing movie.

By the way, a few years ago, NHK had a bunch of historians talk about Honnoji and Akechi`s motivations their conclusions (though there were some disagreements)
    1. The Hatano brothers story is BS
    2. Nobunaga`s abuse of Akechi was not a major factor. Nobunaga abused all his generals.
    3. A potential factor/catalyst was the 1580 reordering of his generals with Sakuma Nobumori and Hayashi Hidesada banished/kicked out of power. AKechi could worry that would happen in the future.
    4. Akechi not liking the system where Nobunaga`s generals were effectively castle superindendants (and not owners). There are unconfirmed reports that Akechi was to move after the Mori were defeated.
    5. And this one was a biggie and really unknown in the west... But just before Honnoji, the Oda were about to invade Shikoku with 20,000 troops. The Oda had the choice of supporting either the Miyoshi or Chosokabe. Hideyoshi was in charge of diplomacy with the Miyoshi, while Akechi in charge of Chosokabe... Well at the last minute Oda chose supporting the Miyoshi which made Akechi look bad.
    6. While these are reasons for the revolt another factor was that he could bag both Nobunaga and Nobutada at the same time...
Agreed that Kubi looks like a lot of fun

There are a number of other possible factors for sure. I like the Nobunaga as abusive bully line, though--simply because it's interesting!
I haven't seen "Kubi" yet, but the glimpses in the trailer seem to indicate that Kitano Takeshi follows this storyline too for Akechi's motivation. There's even a shot of what looks like Nobunaga seizing Akechi in a headlock and banging on his head.

@@realsamuelhawley Clearly as an easy to understand explanation the abuse makes sense. However, as actual history, the reality is much more complicated.
From what was implied (and again there are just 2 1/2 minutes of preview) it Kubi makes it that the Oda generals were jockeying to succeed him (they clearly jockeyed for his favor, hard to see that most of them ever though of supplanting him) and that Hideyoshi seemed to be egging Mitsuhide on

@@jeffreysams3348i think the true motivation wasnt as complicated as myths wanted to us believe. Akechi Mitsuhide was never a loyal man to begin with. Oda Nobunaga was his 4th liege lord after Saito Dosan, Asakura clan, Shogun Asakagi Yoshiaki. Has there any other samurai who changed their loyalty as many as Akechi did?

    • @jeffreysams3348
      @jeffreysams3348 15 днів тому

@@harukrentz435 There were many who changed lords back then (Todo Takatora (there is a very good biography of him in English) changed way more than that (but was more loyal over time and very well trusted by Ieyasu). In the case of Dosan he fought for Dosan until Dosan was killed, and he was far from the only samurai to go from Yoshiaki to Nobunaga (Hosokawa Fujitaka is a prime example). AKechi was unloyal in a time when unloyal was common.

Plot twist, all was orchestrated perfectly by hideyoshi, he killed akechi to erase evidence, since the fact that he want oda clan to bow to him resulting the battle between him vs oda Tokugawa proof that the scenario was clear..he want to take all for himself.. He also want to take Nobunagas sister as concubine but she died along with her husband shibata katsuie and he groomed her daughter to be married to him.. Pervert old monkey don't you think?
