Yes. It depends very much in the variety. If clusters are too tight for ones liking and the grapes are too small then one can remove some grapes for bigger grapes
I see you were suffering the high winds as well Dan. That citrus is seriously loaded with flowers now, looks amazing. We had our first heavy rain shower this afternoon for almost a month

I haven't tried growing a vine in a container, but it will have to be tried! Living in a terraced house, I am unable to plant wherever I like as neighbours are fearful of trees and vines, given their impact on foundations. My Boskoop Glory vine is thriving, this its first spring. Despite losing its top, it is still laden with bunches and making good progress. My Rhea and Vanessa are struggling, have barely put on any growth. All vines are outside on raised ground, facing the morning sun. I am growing all vines espalier style, although the new ones are nowhere near being tied in to a framework yet. I will find out if growing vines is viable, when the bunches mature - that is if they achieve that within our shorter season here. Pretty fresh in the South East today Dan! Last night here, it was only 6 degrees in the greenhouse. Unstable weather patterns are so destructive.
They certainly are Vox. There is an opinion that grapevines will not cause subsidence issues. I wont give any advice on the subject but you can look up that one yourself.

I found this really useful, thank you. Following your advice, I've just transferred a small grape plant (my first, I'm a complete novice) from its small pot into a 30L pot. Eventually I want to put it in a large wooden planter box, about 90L, and have it grow up a trellis on a wall. How long do you think I should let it grow in the 30L pot before transferring it to the bigger planter?
Give it maybe two years and then see.

Hello! Grapes grown from seed are unlikely to grow true to type so you probably won't get the variety you want! Better to buy a grafted vine or grow from a cutting!
Brilliant video, just what I was after.
If I were to grow one in a container/pot outside up a trellis, would I need to bring it in under cover during winter, or would it cope OK outside?

Grapes are fully cold hardy in the UK so it should be fine uncovered. They actually require chill hours for bud growth,

Hi. I received a large concord vine (5ft??) on a mature woody stalk in a large nursery pot. It came from a very overgrown bush at leat 30 ft tall, crawling up a tree.. It has 3 small bundles of unripe grapes on it. Its July in Ohio zone 6. Can I keep it in the container during winter in an attached unheated garage until spring? Should I try to prune it this year? I can keep it outside but didn't want to have it buried in snow. Thank you!!
You could yes, Prune in early WInter to keep it tidy but remember to not take too much growth of as they fruit on the previous years growth.
Nice video! I am growing 8 vines currently in separate containers - from grapes I collected in Napa Valley last year. I had good success early, with nice growth across all of them. They sprouted from the seed about 8 months ago. I have changed pots a couple of times as they've grown. Their soil is correct, a loamy soil. Consistent Ph of 7. I water once a week, though I am wondering if that is too much. Several of the vines dropped all of their leaves and the largest (about 4 feet tall) has a few leaves on it but they developed small bumps and discoloration which I think is from Oedema. I'm concerned the vines are not producing leaves anymore. I thought some were dead, left them alone and they came back - only to drop their leaves as well. Not sure what is going on. I have them indoors and use quality grow lights. Should I move them away from the grow lights toward a window? Should I mimic winter for them and reduce light/heat? Reduce watering further (in your video you start by saying 1x per month and then later say 1x per week - which is correct?). I've heard others say to not fertilize seedlings in the first year. My plan/hope is to be able to plant them outside (California) in late Spring. Any advice is appreciated!
Greetings. Grapes require a dormancy period so I would take them outside during the Winter, I also imagine in California the Winters are not hard so they should be OK (I'm not a climate expert though so I could be wrong). Also, be aware grapes grown from seed are unlikely to be true to type so you could end up with a different grape than you thought. Keep growing medium most but not waterlogged.

Highly informative. Decided to try a grape vine for my first time. Recieved a 2 year old black Spanish grapevine graft. Got it an a 18 gallon container with a bottom layer of river rock, base layer of composted manure/peat, mid layer where roots are is composted mushroom/peat, top layer is composted manure/peat with a 5 foot trellis. Am I going to unintentionally kill this plant?

Sounds good to me. Fertile and well draining, is the pot wooden? They like cool roots.

I would stick with a wooden half barrel if possible.
What would you say would be the best size container in terms of diameter and how deep it is? Don't some grapevine roots go deeper than the standard size of a half whisky barrel? Or do you find the half whisky is best overall for the diameter as well? I was deciding whether to go for the half whisky barrel or I have also seen a taller wooden planter that is almost 2 feet deep but it is only just over one foot in diameter. So the wooden planter I have seen is deeper but not as wide. It is slightly cheaper than the half Whisky barrels costs. What would you say is best?
A good question, thinking about it, the taller wooden one could be better, I suppose to try both if possible would be good for a long term comparison?
I planted my grape plant from a seed 3 years ago and I still haven't seen a single flower or grape. It is very tall though. I made a trellis from some canes that I bought in the garden centre and it's attached itself to the trellis with tendrils. Should I cut off some branches to make it shorter? It's almost up to the ceiling now
Growing from seed isn’t ideal. The likeliness of it being hermaphroditic rather than a dud is very low. This is why cuttings are the main means of propagating grapes.

Hopefully you will still get fruit.
I have started grapes in a grow bag since a year and a half. Weather conditions are hot and humid. Recently I got a small bunch which turned out to be sweet. But no more fruits. What can we use for more fruiting
I would suggest a bigger growing container. A 50 litre wooden pot would be great.

Oh yes. They can be stubborn. I generally start these early such as December as they can be very slow off the mark. Unheated windowsill propagaters are brilliant, ideally on a South/South West facing windowsill above a radiator! Watering with tepid water. Try and get them as warm as you can.

Yes. Peppers and Chillis are great fun but can be stubborn. I grew a few Chillis this year but next year I will grow many. I may even run a Winter windowsill chilli project!

I would stick to one plant per pot. I think it would do better.
I think my two year old grapevine was ravaged by some insect last summer. It had a decent amount of cane growth and produced 2 or 3 small clusters of grapes. But then the leaves began to curl into round tubes. When you peeled open the tubes there were little clusters of what looked like insect eggs or insect droppings. This stalled the growth for the second half of the summer. Does sound like a common issue? Thanks.
It could be a Phosphorous or Potassium deficiency. Is the plant in a pot? It could also be a sign of drought.
@@homegardens7682 it is in a 10 gallon fabric pot. I do give it organic fertilizer and top dress with some compost each year.
Someone thought it was leafroller moths and suggested using BT.
@@porksandwich5693 That is worth a try. I have never used BT spray but I hear it can be effective.

I'm in Toronto, Canada and our winters are quite cold. I got two small concord grape stalks in containters but didn't have time to plant them over the summer. We could get a frost soon such as in a week or so though tonight will be around 10C as coldest. Do you have any idea what I should do at this point? Should I try planting it and protecting it with straw and row covers? Should I bury them in their containers?
Greetings. Do you have a shed or garage with a window where you could overwinter the vines? You could move them in there fr Winter. You could wrap the pots with bubblewrap or as you say, plant the vines if you have space. Concord should take the Toronto cold OK as long as the roots don't freeze in the pot.
@@homegardens7682 I do have a spot for them in the garden and there is also a garage but with only a tiny window. Where would the roots be most protected? In the ground, planted but without much time before frosts? In the ground still in the container? Or wrapped up in the garage?
@@raisajari323 I would plant it in the ground. Take it out the pot first. (If you intend to leave it in the ground).Otherwise, wrap the pot with bubblewrap and place it in a sheltered place in the garden

Is there any nutritional difference between grapes with seeds and grapes without seeds? Also are grapes without seeds GMOs(genetically modified organism)
My understanding is that most are bred through selective breeding over time, for example, many things we eat are a result of selective breeding or through varieties that occurred in nature. I think nutritionally they would be similar but I have no science to show this.
Store bought seedless grapes are generally made sterile via gamma radiation. However even with destroying the reproductive system of the plant you may still find inert seeds. The seeds are good for you, full of manganese and boron both are super important for human health. Even most religions support this science. Gen 1:29 "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon all the face of the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; it shall be yours for food and healing"

Yes, they are porous so good to prevent root rot and overly damp growing medium. They are easier to damage than wood but if wooden pots are not preferred or available this is an option.
