I don't quite agree with the thesis that Russians are not that sociable. It's just that Americans talk to everyone , and this communication is "superficial." And Russian people have a strong depth of character. They are not interested in empty conversations . If you talk to a person , you talk to them with all your heart .

We do BBQ by ourselves, there are special places in some parks with preinstalled grills for public use, but even better is to get out of city on weekend to our summer houses or cabins (called Dacha), its basically a weekend retreat houses outside of city most people have for relaxation and to get away from city and enjoy nature, do BBQ or Shashlik or even have your little own garden as a hobby. People, especially retired and no longer working love spending time there. 🤗

Minor correction. Standard income tax in Russia is 13%. It's possible to shave is down to 6% or even 5% for some self-employed activities. It can be even less than that depending on a region with a "patent". I agree with you on many points, especially the immoral policies on homeless people in the "first world" countries. 9:30 I was born in Yugoslavia, and came to the U.S when I was 3 years old. although it isn't Russia. Everything is identical regarding the social welfare system and no homeless people. I see chronically homeless people everywhere here in California and it's heartbreaking.
I like the formula that I heard from an American in Russia. He said that if you come to Russia, you have to become Russian. You have to immerse yourself in Russian culture, otherwise you will not survive. Unlike in the USA, where you have to remain who you identify yourself to be. It's great if you become Russian. This does not mean that you have abandoned your culture, it means that you respect another culture. This tolerance is lacking in the West.
I quite agree with that concept. When in Russia you need to unleash your inner Russian so to speak. It's not very difficult in fact. There's a bit of a Russian in everyone :)
Interesting! My family immigrated from ussr to usa and I felt that I had to renounce my heritage and totally assimilate to be socially acceptable because of russophobia and sovietophobia. Only decades later did I realize how much I lost because of that pressure.
You can find excellent barbecue in Caucusus regions people sometimes fly from Moscow and other big cities to Vladikavkaz, Nalchik or Dagestan to have good food, enjoy nature only for weekend and it’s much cheaper there

There is a place in Moscow that is called SMOKE IS and it is running by american and they serve real south style bbq from giant smokers. I bet there are some authentical texmex places also but I don't like mexican cuisine so I can't give you a straight advice 😗

I also used Russian Made Easy and Russian Accelerator, and I highly recommend them. I’m not fluent in Russian, but they gave me a great foundation. Accelerator is well worth the meager price, and I’m cheap. :) I was born in 60 and share many of your sentiments.

В современной России многие имеют бесплатное жильё, благодаря Советскому Союзу. Жильё, квартиры давали бесплатно! Мои три тётки получили квартиры от государства. У одной была шикарная четырехкомнатная квартира от завода, на котором она работала. Дали,как многодетной матери.Правда, она не смогла потом её сохранить в 90е , разменяла на 2 двухкомнатные в старой хрущёвке. Но сам факт! Мои родители купили кооперативную квартиру в позднем СССР, платили за кооператив копейки без каких-либо процентов! В 90е оформили собственность. У нас божами становятся маргиналы, которых обманули мошенники или совсем спившиеся маргиналы, которые сами всё профукали. В 90е это было повсеместно. Сейчас люди работают, пашут, а если вообще нет вариантов, берут ипотеку! И всё: капиталистическое рабство))

well, you might be not totally right about bbq, Russians love bbq, it's called ШАШЛЫК and the places with ШАУРМА also sell bbq. The designated bbq stands are usually better. Try them out
One point about Russian conservatism (speaking as a Russian). Traditional values are something that's being taught to you since childhood, but that's not something that's being enforced. From movies etc. I get the vibe that American conservatives often see it as their civil duty to interfere whenever they see something that goes against their idea of good and bad. For example, I remember a scene in some American show where a policeman saw a car where teenagers were making love, and he interfered to stop them and take them home. That seemed quite wild to me. Like, why are you minding other people's business? No crime is being committed, so why do you take it on yourself to get involved? Russians in general are quite suspicious of the people who force their ideas on others. For this reason being ideological (regardless of the ideology) is not seen as a virtue. You're expected to be normal and decent. If you're not, people will just avoid you.
Another couple of corrections that need to be made. Yes, certain laws can be ignored if you're a private individual keeping a low profile. For example, nobody cares if you download copyrighted music and movies, and the 6% tax rate for self-employed people like private tutors is that low exactly because self-employed people mostly didn't care to pay taxes at all. But if you start a business for example, the authorities will pay a much closer attention to you. If you want to open a cafe, be sure to study all the fire, epidemiology and tax regulations, because governmental checks are real and no joke. There is a tacit understanding among people around here which of the rules are overly complicated and can be ignored and which rules must actually be followed. So if you're new in Russia, don't come with the mindset that «ah, laws just don't apply to real life». In many cases they do, and you can run into trouble if you don't respect them where it counts. Also don't trust a random Russian person's opinion on it. They would probably understate the importance of regulations in areas they aren't familiar with themselves. So if you want to open a business, seek a businessman's advice, etc. Or just do everything by the book to be on the safe side.

The main difference is that the G-7 Nations pissed away their resources in search of Profits. Russia seems to have not allowed unrestrained exploitation to waste their resources. The USA needs resources, Russia appears to ask for a fair deal. The USA has bee working at Victoria Nuland's War for 30 years to take Russian Assets. That has cost the USA more than they can accumulate in profits. So the Wealthy in the USA are unhappy.
Homeless situation is not quite what you describe. People are not given apartments for free. But they have options to spend night at shelter where they can wash, clean clothes, have a meal.
As for the taxes in Russia: if you are just an employee in a company, you are actually paying 13% taxes of your salary + the employer pays about 35% of your salary (it is on top of your salary, at the employer's expense) for you into pension fund, social security fund, etc. But if you are a freelancer you can register with the tax authority as a freelancer (it can be made just in a phone app and the procedure takes literally 3 minutes, you don't have to file any paper documents) and pay 4-6% of you income basically through the same app. You can also start your own business as a sole entrepreneur and pay 6% tax of the income + 1% donation to the social security fund. If you are doing business as a medium/large scale company, you pay 20% VAT.
Hello! 6% tax - AFAIK it's a small individual business tax, larger businesses pay bigger taxes. The employer pays the social care tax for every employee (35% of the employee's salary). Hired worker pays the 13% income tax (not himself, the employer does the bureaucratic part on his behalf). Homeless people do exist in Russia, they can be seen nearby big train stations. Of course, the scale of the problem is not like in the U.S. where it's even worse than Yeltsin's Russia when so called 'black realtors' were at their peak.
Well, I am 62 now and not about to pick up and move my family to Russia. I’m doing OK here in NW Ohio. But your videos are most interesting to me, as I was a Russian and East European Studies major in college and took three years of Russian language. In my early thirties I had even reached a point of being functional in it (this was the early 90s, when I was tutoring a Russian Jewish immigrant family in English). It’s a fascinating country with a rich history and culture indeed. Got you a new sub. I’m really looking forward to seeing more videos if you get to travel around the country. So during the Soviet era, there was even more security. Being a child (a schoolboy 10 years old), I could walk several kilometers around the city alone and nothing would happen to me.

It would probably be more correct to call your homeless people slackers looking for freebies. I live in a small town in the Tver region. I have never seen homeless people in my city. There are alcoholics and those who voluntarily lose their human appearance. but even they do something (sell scrap metal and the like) and live somewhere. No one is lying on the streets or living in tents.

There were singificant number of homless people in Moscow ten years ago. Now there a lot less, yet there are some of them. My wife works in IT company that automates business processes for Moscow's social care for homeless people. There is a whole network of services and places for homless people to come for help. They can get food, use bathroom, get help in resocialization.
Actually, with taxes is more complicated. If you are self-employed (that's very suitable for service based economy) ypu pay 4 or 6% from any incoming money (4 from individuals, 6 from enterprises). For individual entrepreneurs there is flat rate about $500. For others, who are employed there is 13% flat income tax and almost 30% of social security and mandatory health insurance (this is payed by employer). VAT is 18%, some special taxes on gasoline or alcohol is present too, done are off in special economical development zones... So, it's basically ok, especially knowing a vast social services available for people.

6% is not maximum, but minimum of just one tax you pay in Russia, is you are certain type of a businessman. Regular people pay 13% income tax + ~15% "social tax" (several taxes) + 20% sales tax included into every price tag.
As a russian who lived in europe where mexican food is actually present here and there, I do miss it back in Russia a lot, that being said however, I was always saying that mexican food for americans is like georgian food for russians, I got half of the office addicted to khachapuri, so while not exactly a replacement, definitely worth trying😅 If you happen to cook a lot/enjoy cooking, maybe show off and start advocating for mexican food among your russian friends so that demand for mexican cuisine will grow (damn I could use some quesadilla right about now... 🤤) At least I'm glad to see jalapenos appearing as an ingredient here and there in various menus recently

I teach English online to adults looking for conversation practice, and also to kids and teenagers with a local private school. Native speakers are in high demand because most of them left when the SMO started. I had an IT job and was working remotely, but it was extremely boring, and English teaching is so much more interesting and rewarding.

Sure, why not? As soon as you hit 18, you're free to do anything legal, including registering your own IP (ИП - индивидуальный предприниматель). That's a legal business entity with its own tax regime (6% from total income by default + 40k RUB per year to social security funds). If you're not a citizen yet, you'll need to have a work permit to do this, which sounds legit.
I live in a district which was planned and built in 70s. There are school, two kindergartens and about 15 long five-strored houses. It has all you need within 5 min walk, but god damn this place is a maze. I was lost several times when I was a kid within 150m from home cause every building looks the same.

В городах сосредоточены многочисленные кафе,клубы,рестораны,музеи,театры,супермаркеты,больницы,аптеки на доступом растоянии. Многоквартирных домах,за весьма символические выплаты,подается горячая и холодная вода,электричество,газ,уборка территории,вывоз мусора, и особенно отопление за долгие холодные зимы и многое другое. Это обьясняет почему россияне предпочитают жить квартирах отличие от американцев.

A decent house will cost you 10 mil at least. I mean there are cheap houses, but it will need a nice repair. You pay for a land in this case more, than for a house. :) Anyway, good luck here. We do BBQ by ourselves, there are special places in some parks with preinstalled grills for public use, but even better is to get out of city on weekend to our summer houses or cabins (called Dacha), its basically a weekend retreat houses outside of city most people have for relaxation and to get away from city and enjoy nature, do BBQ or Shashlik or even have your little own garden as a hobby. People, especially retired and no longer working love spending time there. 🤗

9:30 I was born in Yugoslavia, and came to the U.S when I was 3 years old. although it isn't Russia. Everything is identical regarding the social welfare system and no homeless people. I see chronically homeless people everywhere here in California and it's heartbreaking.
I like the formula that I heard from an American in Russia. He said that if you come to Russia, you have to become Russian. You have to immerse yourself in Russian culture, otherwise you will not survive. Unlike in the USA, where you have to remain who you identify yourself to be. It's great if you become Russian. This does not mean that you have abandoned your culture, it means that you respect another culture. This tolerance is lacking in the West.

У одной была шикарная четырехкомнатная квартира от завода, на котором она работала. Дали,как многодетной матери.Правда, она не смогла потом её сохранить в 90е , разменяла на 2 двухкомнатные в старой хрущёвке. Но сам факт! Мои родители купили кооперативную квартиру в позднем СССР, платили за кооператив копейки без каких-либо процентов! В 90е оформили собственность. У нас божами становятся маргиналы, которых обманули мошенники или совсем спившиеся маргиналы, которые сами всё профукали. В 90е это было повсеместно. Сейчас люди работают, пашут, а если вообще нет вариантов, берут ипотеку! И всё: капиталистическое рабство))

One point about Russian conservatism (speaking as a Russian). Traditional values are something that's being taught to you since childhood, but that's not something that's being enforced.
From movies etc. I get the vibe that American conservatives often see it as their civil duty to interfere whenever they see something that goes against their idea of good and bad. For example, I remember a scene in some American show where a policeman saw a car where teenagers were making love, and he interfered to stop them and take them home. That seemed quite wild to me. Like, why are you minding other people's business? No crime is being committed, so why do you take it on yourself to get involved?
Russians in general are quite suspicious of the people who force their ideas on others. For this reason being ideological (regardless of the ideology) is not seen as a virtue. You're expected to be normal and decent. If you're not, people will just avoid you.
Another couple of corrections that need to be made. Yes, certain laws can be ignored if you're a private individual keeping a low profile. For example, nobody cares if you download copyrighted music and movies, and the 6% tax rate for self-employed people like private tutors is that low exactly because self-employed people mostly didn't care to pay taxes at all.
But if you start a business for example, the authorities will pay a much closer attention to you. If you want to open a cafe, be sure to study all the fire, epidemiology and tax regulations, because governmental checks are real and no joke.
There is a tacit understanding among people around here which of the rules are overly complicated and can be ignored and which rules must actually be followed. So if you're new in Russia, don't come with the mindset that «ah, laws just don't apply to real life». In many cases they do, and you can run into trouble if you don't respect them where it counts.
Also don't trust a random Russian person's opinion on it. They would probably understate the importance of regulations in areas they aren't familiar with themselves. So if you want to open a business, seek a businessman's advice, etc. Or just do everything by the book to be on the safe side.

Homeless situation is not quite what you describe. People are not given apartments for free. But they have options to spend night at shelter where they can wash, clean clothes, have a meal.

As for the taxes in Russia: if you are just an employee in a company, you are actually paying 13% taxes of your salary + the employer pays about 35% of your salary (it is on top of your salary, at the employer's expense) for you into pension fund, social security fund, etc.
But if you are a freelancer you can register with the tax authority as a freelancer (it can be made just in a phone app and the procedure takes literally 3 minutes, you don't have to file any paper documents) and pay 4-6% of you income basically through the same app.
You can also start your own business as a sole entrepreneur and pay 6% tax of the income + 1% donation to the social security fund.
If you are doing business as a medium/large scale company, you pay 20% VAT.

6% tax - AFAIK it's a small individual business tax, larger businesses pay bigger taxes. The employer pays the social care tax for every employee (35% of the employee's salary). Hired worker pays the 13% income tax (not himself, the employer does the bureaucratic part on his behalf).

But your videos are most interesting to me, as I was a Russian and East European Studies major in college and took three years of Russian language. In my early thirties I had even reached a point of being functional in it (this was the early 90s, when I was tutoring a Russian Jewish immigrant family in English).

So during the Soviet era, there was even more security. Being a child (a schoolboy 10 years old), I could walk several kilometers around the city alone and nothing would happen to me.
You can’t find Mexican food in Russia because we don’t really love very hot food with so much spices like Mexicans and Americans do.

It is very popular place because lies near Almaty borders. And of course there's a beautiful nature with mountains, hills and rivers.
How much gets the pharmacist working 24/7 in your village? And how much gets a pharmacist in Germany or US? It is that simple: labor is expensive in the West and people work for a song where you live.

Even teeth in Russia are treated absolutely free of charge, of course complex prosthetics cost money, but in general you can cure teeth without paying a cent.

There are alcoholics and those who voluntarily lose their human appearance. but even they do something (sell scrap metal and the like) and live somewhere. No one is lying on the streets or living in tents.

There were singificant number of homless people in Moscow ten years ago. Now there a lot less, yet there are some of them. My wife works in IT company that automates business processes for Moscow's social care for homeless people. There is a whole network of services and places for homless people to come for help. They can get food, use bathroom, get help in resocialization.
Actually, with taxes is more complicated.
If you are self-employed (that's very suitable for service based economy) ypu pay 4 or 6% from any incoming money (4 from individuals, 6 from enterprises). For individual entrepreneurs there is flat rate about $500. For others, who are employed there is 13% flat income tax and almost 30% of social security and mandatory health insurance (this is payed by employer).
VAT is 18%, some special taxes on gasoline or alcohol is present too, done are off in special economical development zones...
So, it's basically ok, especially knowing a vast social services available for people.
VAT is 20% since 2019...

6% is not maximum, but minimum of just one tax you pay in Russia, is you are certain type of a businessman. Regular people pay 13% income tax + ~15% "social tax" (several taxes) + 20% sales tax included into every price tag.
As a russian who lived in europe where mexican food is actually present here and there, I do miss it back in Russia a lot, that being said however, I was always saying that mexican food for americans is like georgian food for russians, I got half of the office addicted to khachapuri, so while not exactly a replacement, definitely worth trying😅
If you happen to cook a lot/enjoy cooking, maybe show off and start advocating for mexican food among your russian friends so that demand for mexican cuisine will grow (damn I could use some quesadilla right about now... 🤤)

I teach English online to adults looking for conversation practice, and also to kids and teenagers with a local private school. Native speakers are in high demand because most of them left when the SMO started. I had an IT job and was working remotely, but it was extremely boring, and English teaching is so much more interesting and rewarding.

Tax in Russia: 13% tax on annual incomes up to 5 million rubles, rising to 15% for anything over that level. For example, the Middle class for Saratov (American Dream Set) ~2mln...4mln rubles. Social security taxation is on the Employer but if you are individual entrepreneur you pay additionally for the Social security 6%

As soon as you hit 18, you're free to do anything legal, including registering your own IP (ИП - индивидуальный предприниматель).
That's a legal business entity with its own tax regime (6% from total income by default + 40k RUB per year to social security funds).
If you're not a citizen yet, you'll need to have a work permit to do this, which sounds legit.
I live in a district which was planned and built in 70s. There are school, two kindergartens and about 15 long five-strored houses. It has all you need within 5 min walk, but god damn this place is a maze. I was lost several times when I was a kid within 150m from home cause every building looks the same.

It is 13% tax if you are an eployee, if u r entrepreneur you can choose between 6 and 15%. Other entity types have their nuances too. 6% is a minimum. Oh. No. There is a 4% option too if you work only for yourself. Like a freelancer. It is 4%. But as an eployee you can return some of your paid taxes if you used a paid medical service, gyms or you have bought a place to live. It is a nice touch :)
And instead of mexican food we have georgian. Hinkali. Healthier than tacos, you know :).
And you have really lowered a house price in urban areas or near cities. A decent house will cost you 10 mil at least. I mean there are cheap houses, but it will need a nice repair. You pay for a land in this case more, than for a house. :)
Anyway, good luck here. It is a nice place to live. Not the best, but still :)
