- After the video on how to convert your Da Vinci Pro to the E3Dv6 hot-end I got a lot of questions why you should do this conversion. In this video I explain the benefits of making the conversion to that hot-end.
the E3Dv6 Hot-End cartridge is designed by Bruce Walker. The video on how to convert your printer to this hot end can be found here:

Thanks for watching this video.
Just made the mod with a non original e3dv6 ( cost only 9 euros) using the original pcb and heater,thermistor,fun......
The printing quality is unmatched comparing to the rabish original hotend.
For first time i got true "perfect" layer even from the first print with the e3d ( really smooth first layer , the lines were invisible without over extrusions.)
Thank you brian!
Thank you.
It's so nice, after so many years, to hear that people still have benefit from a video I made.
I hope you will have loads of fun with your printer, and that everything you print with it will turn into a successful print.
can you give me the link to a non original e3dv6 you used?
What process did you use to convert? Thanks
@@kevians2001 if you are carefull it is pretty easy to assemble.
print the parts from thingyverse
carefully unscrew and pull out the original pcb from the original hotend.
reeeealy carefully detach the thermistor from the hotend ( it is glued).
unscrew and take out the thermocoupler
dissasemble the e3d hotend and put some good quality thermopaste on the nozle and neck trheads. screw everything but the nozle not so tight.
put the thermocoupler in place ( use the original not the e3d). place in the small screw hall which holds th e3d thermistor the original one. I inserted in the screw hole and not in the e3d thermistor hole since it is smaller and does not fit. be sure it sits tight but not push hard ( in order to not break the glass).
attach the cables to the original pcb and attach the assembled hotend to the carriage.
Choose from printer menu to "clean nozle" in order to heat the hotend. Once it is heated and ready , while holding the part where the nozzle is screwed , screw the nozle a litle tighter.
You are ready to go!
I have a da vinci 1.0, not pro series. Do you think this is something I can do on that model?
No, I am sure you can't.
There are, however, UA-cam video's explaining how to give your printer an E3D V6 hot end.
I have never done it though.
I was looking at those too. But you have to flash it.. and that looks a little scary.. lots of comments on the machine never operating again. I'll give it another look over.
Your channel has been alot of help, the content is very appreciated 💜
I would not be so scared about it. Worst thing that can happen is that the motherboard dies on you, but in that case you just buy another motherboard, like a smoothieboard, and then there are many instructions online about setting that up. I have done exact that with my Da Vinci Pro, and now it runs on Marlin software.
Hi Brian, Thank you for another great video, I will now definitely consider a nozzle upgrade.
Hi Ash,
When you have done so, please let me know what you think of it.
Good luck with your build.
Hi Brian. Great video. I just did this upgrade to 1 of my davinci pro's and I'm having an issue. I have that dreaded clicking sound coming from the extrusion motor. Even happens when I have good flow coming from the hot end. It doesnt happen when I disconnect my guide tube from the e3d v6 and just extrude into the open. I put the cartridge in one of my other davinci pro's and the same thing is happening. This happens as soon as the filament reaches the e3d v6 during a "load filament" cycle, when I dont even have an object loaded to print, as well as through a print. Is there an issue with how fast the davinci is pushing filament through the new nozzle? Something I need to change?
For sure there is something going wrong with the extrusion. Have you already tried less extrusion? A lower number on the extrusion multiplier might work. Also, Have you made sure the nozzle you are using in the V6 is a 0.4mm nozzle? And is it a genuine nozzle, or a clone with more resistance to the filament? These are the things to look for.
@@3dPrintCreator it is a ginuine nozzle. .4mm is what yhe add said it was. And isnt the only way to change the extrusion multiplier whe you are adjusting settings for the object you are printing? How do you adjust that when loading new filament? Also, I am using the da vinci pcb board, not the modded one you refer to in your video. Could that be the issue?
How did you adjust the bed height to the e3d v6 nozzle it sits down further than the stock nozzle
Like I explain in my video about changing the cartridge, you can set the bed height in the menu of the printer, and also you can lower the bed by tightening the level screws.
BB Walker has been out of circulation for a long time now.
Currently. his page said he will be back this June.
I have been trying to order the module for the extrusion.
That's unfortunate, but something that is not in my control.
You can however, use the original board on your original extruder.
After you did the conversion back then, did you struggle with print quality at first and did you have to alter some settings in simplify3d to make it work good compared to the stock hotend (except the temperature of the E3D thermistor which I am aware of is off, I am using bdwalkers table and added a 100Ohm resistor to be able to use higher temps)? And, apart from being able to use other materials and get higher temperatures did you see any benefit compared to the stock hotend in print quality?
My stock hot never was that good, and after a year of use, it got worse.
Right after the build, I had to try temperature settings, but that was really it, the quality of the prints was better right away.,
@@3dPrintCreator that's what I thought. Otherweise you would have done a video about it I guess 🙂 I struggle a little with the print quality. Somehow I have to print much slower now (20mm/s) to get a decent benchy in ABS. ASA is much worse. I am still fiddling with the settings in Simplify, not giving up yet. :)
Quick question how are you verifying nozzle size?
I don't. When I buy my nozzles, I believe the company sending them to me to give me the correct nozzles.
I would only have doubts if I have under or over extrusion, but if I don't have that kind of problems, my nozzles have the correct size.
Thanks for your time and consideration in your videos Brian. Concerning this video are you now calibrating manually or is the an auto calibrating version with the pin down by the nozzle? Also will it work on the 1 Pro and the AiO? I ended up with both ( scanner ).
Hi, Thanks for your feedback,
I don't have the Da Vinci printer anymore. The internals of the printer have been changed to a CoreXY printer that runs on another mainboard with Marlin software. Now I can use every feature Marlin has to offer, so yes I now have mesh bed leveling but this isn't something you can add to a normal XYZPrinting printer because they have a motherboard that doesn't let you run Marlin on it.
As long as you use the original motherboard on your printer, you can only use either the semi-automatic bed leveling XYZPrinting invented or manual bed leveling.
What is the difference in print quality between the original printhead and E3D v6. ?
In quality not so much, as long as the nozzle of the original print head is still 0.4mm and not worn.
Over time, the opening in the nozzle gets bigger and you should change nozzle because the quality of your prints is going to change. With original components, this would mean you have to change the complete drop in carriage, just because you can't buy a spare original nozzle.
When you have converted to an E3Dv6 or a clone, you are able to change the nozzle when this gets worn out. Now you just swap a $5,00 piece in stead of a $150,00 piece, and if you do it for cheap... You can get nozzles for as little as $0,40.
Hello Brian, I´m quite new in 3d printing...but I need to change the extruder from a Da vinci jr 1.0 pro... is it possible to fit the E3DV6? o which would be the best option? everything else works really fine!
Thanks!
Hi Gerardo,
You won't be able to use the parts for the Da Vinci Pro 1.0 on that machine, as it has a complete different print head.
I have, how ever, seen replacement E3Dv6 modifications for the Junior Pro as well. I think searching the Facebook groups will give you results and links to files to print.
Hello Brian, thank you for your videos. They have been very helpful. I have a DaVinci 1.0 pro 3 in 1. From what I understand you can flash third party firmware to it, but I can't seem to find any information to do it with this model. Can you or someone tell me of any firmware I can flash to it? hopefully without having to do any modifications since again this printer is supposed to allow for third party firmware.
Hi Maverick,
As far as I know, the firmware can only be updated, and it's not free for third-party firmware. The only freedom you have with this printer is using a third-party filament instead of proprietary xyzprinting filament.
If I am wrong, then they made their printers free for changes after I quit using xyzprinting machines.
So am I right in thinking that I can use an original 0.1mm "High Precision" nozzle from E3Dv6 in the clone?
Nothing would prevent you from using that nozzle as the thread is the same, but I don't think the complete setup is going to be good for this. For a High Precision nozzle you also need the rest of the components to be of extreme high quality. This means an original E3Dv6 all metal, but also a better extruder and probably not a bowden setup, although I am not sure about that last one.
An additonal option is to buy the E3D clone for €7-10 and then to upgrade it with the original E3D Block & Sock - V6 Upgrade kit for roughly €20. This gives you a better heater block and you get that blue sock thingy :-), plus you don't go Clone all the way but support E3D for their design work and IP.
That's a great option. I did that non intentional a few weeks ago. I had a broken original E3Dv6 and a broken clone. With the two I made a new almost original hot end.
Well Informed Brian Thank you
Well, thank you for watching :-)
Can you send me the link where you bought the PCB. I've already spent over 2000 hours on my Da Vinci. Thank you in advance . horst
It's the very first link in my description:
ua-cam.com/video/423hnjFkS5U/v-deo.html
Thank you
Awesome video Brian. 2 questions: 1. Do you need to get an additional PCB or can you use the stock "Da Vinci Pro" PCB? and will this new nozzle work with XYZ ware? Thanks!
Hi Jacob,
You can use the original PCB but then you have to do some soldering or you have to get the connectors and Yes... You can still use XYZWare for Pro.
Only when you are willing to use different temperatures for the nozzle or the bed, beyond the range that is set to XYZWare for Pro, you will need Simplify3D.
Thanks for your quick reply! After 2571 hours printed on my stock extruder it's time to put that baby to rest and upgrade. Thanks for your awesome videos!
@@3dPrintCreator Actually you do no need any soldering if you use the original heater and thermistor.
Hey brain maybe you can help me I have a monoprice mp select mini 3d printer my lever broke how can I fix it
Hi Paul,
I have no experience with that printer, but can you send me a picture and explanation of what is broken?
You can send it to: info@3D-printcreator.com
can I install E3d on a original firmware of Davinci Pro ?
Yes, without any problems.
I do following most of your post, and all this upgrades and improvements, on end is not easier just buy a proper 3D printer, for example Prusa cost around $700
There are for sure better printers then the Da Vinci Pro machine, but for people that already have this machine, upgrading to a better hot end is for sure cheaper then buying a complete new printer.
is there a version for the Mini series?
Not that I know about.
Subscribed and drink on the way :). Any place that sells them all assembled?
I know the guy who designed it did sell them assembled, the link is in the video.
Don't know if he still does.
I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. but you never really said WHY you should upgrade the hot end. What's the purpose of changing it?
He does, if you listen it gives you the ability to change nozzles either to replace a worn nozzle or to change sizes which you cannot do with the standard Da Vinci Hotend.
Well, as Alan Dawson says, I told that you can change the nozzle and therefore choose the material you want to print with. Now you can use materials like carbon fiber filament, copper, brass, steel filaments, etc.
why can't the davici Pro not go higher temps? surely that's just a software constraint?
Software yes, but it's the software baked into the motherboard of the machine.
