    The saying “American as Apple Pie” is a classic one that harkens back to American culture, to the days of home-baked pies and gingham picnic blankets. But apples, of course, are much older than the United States, and the humble pie has a history much longer than the nation.

In hindsight, it would have been even better if that nervous animal had been my MIL's last dog ---- but this occurred years ago and she has ruined 3 more dogs since then. She'll tell us all the time that we don't treat our animals right ---- nobody knows more about dogs than she does, you see ---- but our dogs are calm, relaxed and well-behaved whether at home or out and about amongst a crowd of strangers, while her dog can't be left home alone or it will bark for hours and annoy her nrighbors. I have to dog-sit when my wife takes her mom shopping every week.....the current dog is also old, grossly overweight, and in lousy health due to an indulgent diet, but the dog's owner is elderly and in poor health as well, and it's a toss-up as to which one will kick the bucket first. My wife is hoping her mom goes first so the dog can be re-homed to someone sane! I read somewhere that apple pies were such an important staple of life in early America, that people got sick of them. Hence this poem:
    I loathe, abhor, detest, despise,
    Abominate dried-apple pies.
    I like good bread, I like good meat,
    Or anything that's fit to eat;
    But of all poor grub beneath the skies,
    The poorest is dried apple pies.
    Give me the toothache, or sore eyes,
    But don't give me dried apple pies.
    The farmer takes his gnarliest fruit,
    'Tis wormy, bitter, and hard, to boot;
    He leaves the hulls to make us cough,
    And don't take half the peeling off.
    Then on a dirty cord 'tis strung
    And in a garret window hung,
    And there it serves as roost for flies,
    Until it's made up into pies.
    Tread on my corns, or tell me lies,
    But don't pass me dried-apple pies.

    I'm in Washington State & Oregon has nothing on us. Especially when WA is the #1 producer of apples in the US & Canada. I though prefer a good huckleberry (the absolute best!) , cherry, or blueberry pie over apple. Pie is great. And my dad preferred it over cake so my sister made 29 different pies for his 75th birthday. Nothing was left over.
    Great episode HG!

      Before cheap refrigeration, apples were not easy to obtain in climates (e.g. the Deep South) I'll suited to the trees. Now they are everywhere, but of such miserable, tasteless cultivars that they are little better than mere filler/carrier for the spices, which are the only decent flavors in such monstrosities.

      Food can be intensely tribal, perhaps even political. As examples, try looking up the history of Gumbo, or Paella, and you'll find a lot of people yelling at each other over what ingredients and techniques can or cannot, should or should not, be used in a certain dish; and that it's not really the "True" version of that dish if you do it this other way with these other wrong ingredients. Of course, the reality is that when people migrate they like to recreate, to the best of their ability, their classic foods from the region they came from, and they may be forced to approximate it with different, locally obtainable ingredients. This type of adaptation makes far more sense to me than importing food ingredients from hundreds or thousands of miles away; but some people invest far too much of their personal identity into the habits, culture and customs of their birthplace. It's tribalism, and it drives people apart rather than bringing them together.
