    I`m a retired mechanic and knew about the japanese phillips. Never thought to hammer the screw head with the bit before using. If I need to I`ll grind some of those free coupon HF screwdrivers to fit. Thanks and I gave a "like' to it. Never too old to learn. I have a secret way of freeing up frozen bolts and nuts I might share with you sometime.

    Excellent tutorial. I use a Milwaukee battery impact driver, such as what carpenters use, to remove stuck screws. But I still prep. So far it's worked every time.

    Pre tapping the bit with the hammer and then taking up the "air gap" before giving er a healthy rap is brilliant. Great vid!

    The first JIS driver I ever bought was the Vessel Impacta #2. It is a impact driver built into the handle of the screwdriver and it works well. I have had screws stripped so badly a Philips driver could not get purchase on it but the JIS driver was able to back it out and allowed me to replace the screws. For those on a budget I highly recommend the Vessel 220w as it has JIS tips #1,2 and 3 and a slotted tip.
    Shane's tip about grinding the tip of a Philips driver will help a little but the geometry of the blade is different than JIS so there is no substitution for having the correct screwdriver.

    Hey Shane , Good tip for you .
    Use an auto punch to make an indentation around 1-2mm from the OD of the screw head .
    Then use a solid punch with a tip similar to the size of the indentation made by the auto punch .
    Start at zero degrees tapping it gently to seat the solid punch and gradually add a few degrees in the direction of loosening the screw while tapping . Works 90% of the time

    I can't believe you publish this video now because I was at my garage today trying to synchronize my V2 carburetors and I figured that the other carb's mixture screw is stuck in there really good. Apparently previous owner have tried to get it out but actually only managed to messed it up. Of course it's slightly more complicated, especially because I'm not very keen to take my carbs out again. I think I'm trying some liquid to loosen that screw a little.

    -Yep had one on my 82 XJ & did break it off, theirs a different feel to screw driver that fits opposed to one that does not, I learned from engineer I worked for when something gaulded /froze up at times if you in small increments loosen alittle then reverse go back, then loosen & so on this allow the screw to clean its threads its always worked for me especial on alum on alum, great video shane

    Hi Shane, the fastest and easiest way to get those off is with a centerpunch. Knock a deep enough hole on the edge of the screw then tilt the punch and knock it counter clockwise. Learned it from a local mechanic.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  Рік тому +1

      Hi Pang, that is an option but not the choice for me. Lots of risk to scratch the cover when use miss (which you will every time the grip is not enough yet and it jumps out). Also many other time the master cylinder is plastic and I don't want to add side loads as you hit with the hammer, thirdly....the "shock" of the impact tool has a benefit the standard punch cannot give...shock + twist. My thoughts...BUT there is a time and place for what you mentioned and MUST be in the mechanics choices! Make it a great day. Shane

    Not trying to be a "know all" but I've got a impact phillips bit in my tool kit for exactly that purpose, use it to reseat the screw before trying to extract it. As you said, you'll just round it out more if you don't give it some "new meat" to grab onto. Once again, Great instructional vid 👍. The impact also help release the wedging of threads, that is caused by the stretch of the bolt (from tightening). Sorry if someone already mentioned this.

    Great video. A couple of alternative suggestions, from my life as "keeping stuff running, miles away from any garage":
    - you might create a deeper and better groove if you do the head prep first with a smaller bit, before finishing it with the right size.
    - if you only have a screwdriver, you can try to prep the head the same way but with the screwdriver. And then you can with a solid grip press the screwdriver down while tapping with hammer and twist simultaneously.

    That white stuff on the bottom of the screw - probably aluminum corrosion, probably what made the screw tight, and what caused it to be so hard to turn and caused the stripping.

    Thanks Shane, I must be the one in a million that missed the Japanese standard screwdriver! Just ordered them. And I also love my impact but thanks for adding the setting the head skill set!! Awesome. Hey one question, easy outs, would you make a video explaining the proper way to attempt them?? Please. Left handed drill bits etc. I fail all the time. !!! Thanks again. Great videos.

      I wonder why the hell do they use that type of screw driver. IMO, developing a tool that was already designed way back before the japanese developed this type of head fastener and yet they prefer to make some weird angle head design, JIS? jesus. Feels like they are doing that on purpose just to get you to buy more tools and so when you do do it wrong then its more susceptible to some impatient people to just throw the part away.

    • @dkruitz
      @dkruitz 6 років тому

      Lime Phillips head screws are designed to torque out at an appropriate amount of force which often as you know strips the screw. JIS screws are not designed to cam out like the Phillips are, and if you use a Philips driver on a jis screw it will pop out just like the Phillips is designed to do. JIS IS BETTER IMHO, it's the crappy Phillips screwdrivers we all started using that is the problem.

      Yea, i understand that.

      It goes back to Henry Ford not being able to get the rights to use the Robertson screw design (ak square drive) - which would reign supreme in North America and likely the world, if he had.

    I love this channel I wish I knew about these courses when I was looking into schools I would have loved to take them.. I do have a prairie 650 which is in bad shape I’m rebuilding it because it went down running so only should need a freshening up service plugs and carb kit... while working in the carb before watching your videos I had an issue taking the throttle/post for butterfly off because I could t activate the throttle by hand... later I found out if wasn’t so much hunk sticking it but the nut was so tight it basically bonded the throttle plate or butterfly up... so now I loosened the nut and it activates by hand easily and spring brings it back but the dang brass throttle plate or butterfly plate will not line up anymore I’m having a buddy look at it but do you have any suggestions? I did get one of the two screws in but the second hole has 1mm or less brass showing in the hole and it just will not line up right

    Some Manufacturer should make an impact that has a setting in between fwd and rev that does not rotate and a bit that is hard enough to be impacted in to renew the head of the screw.
    It would probably be a best seller!

    Just another free 2¢ just before tapping the impact driver in the counter clockwise or removal direction, I find a LIGHT couple of taps in the clockwise or tightening direction while you still have good bite that way is just enough to break up some of the crust in the hole. If your a naturally meat fisted individual, skip this step.

      Hi Paul...Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! I agree on 6mm or 1/4 in and larger fasteners and good tip! for the smaller fasteners like on master cylinder caps I would just go in reverse as the tool is much stronger than that small diameter and most likely will snap them off.
