Hi Susan quick question I can't get my printer to work does it have to have both cartridges in it to operate cuz I keep on getting an error message because I'm only trying to use the black ink I didn't even buy the color cartridge
Hi Grandpa, I only used the black cartridge and I believe there is a setting in the printer section in the computer where you can specify what cartridge to print with. I believe I also left the empty colour cartridge in the printer. This printer is long gone for me now but I believe I am remembering correctly. Go to your printer in control panel on Windows computers and right click to open a pop up menu then select settings and find the correct settings for selecting your preferred cartridge. Hope this helps. 😃

You're welcome. glad I could help. 😃 I am usually amazed at the mileage I get out of my cartridges but I guess it depends on how much printing you normally do. I hear you about the software recognizing generic cartridges and God help you if you run out of color and want to print in black only. Even though you set that up in the settings it will still alert you every time you go to print something and you have to click a box to continue printing in black only...every. time. you. want. to. print! 🙄 Thanks so much for watching and for your excellent comment.

Thank you Francisca, lol, getting your husband to print everything is one of the best ways to deal with changing ink cartridges in my opinion. 😏 I so appreciate you watching my videos and leaving me wonderful comments/& compliments to let me know you were here. You my friend are amazing! 😁
You're welcome...glad I could help! When your ink is low the indicator light will come on for whatever one is low. There are two lights on the top of the machine - one labelled BK and the other CL. If you choose to replace both at the same time that is absolutely fine or you can just replace the one that is low or out of ink. I tend to print in black and white and don't use much colour so I leave the colour one low and replace the black cartridge with an 240 XL or 240 XXL cartridge. Thanks for watching, for letting me know I could help and for asking such a great question. Have a wonderful day/night. 😀👋
Thanks! Great tutorial. I did exactly like your video and it was easy . My problem now is that when I print, it starts fine, then by the middle of the page the ink is all smudged. What can I do? I've done the test pages and get the same results.
Hi, it sounds like you need to do some maintenance to your printer. Go to your control panel then click on Devices & Printers then select your printer and right click on it select Printing Preferences from the drop down menu. Once there you will see a tab to the far right that says Maintenance. In that tab you will see Cleaning on the top left column. Sounds like you need to click on that one since it mentions smudges. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment. :)
Yes, it is very simple...you would be surprised how many people need a visual demonstration though and I am happy to be able to share that with them. Thanks for watching. 👋😃
Hey Susan! After some time I finally decided to buy the same printer you have in this video, it hasn't arrived yer but hopefully you could help me clarify some things. First, I hear you need that "Canon App" in order to print from your ipad/android phones/tablet? Do you or your husband use this app aswell to print? 2nd: I hear that wireless printers are bad because other random people around your area can find and connect to the wireless printer. Is this true? If so how did you secure your printer so others can't connect to it? I mean I use a secured wifi connection so why this issue apply to me? Because I know that you have to connect to a canon printer server, so is it safe to connect? Or is there a way to secure the Canon Local server that you use to connect your device to?
Hi!! I think you made a great choice in buying the same printer. I have had mine for three years now and all I have had to do with it is buy ink when I run out. Ok, let me get to your questions, I would think you would need an app in order to print from your portable devices - that being said, my husband and I only use our computers to send print jobs to the printer so I have not had any experience using the app. Second, let me clarify something wireless printers are totally fine since no one else can connect to it since it is added to your secure network same as your computer and other devices are. If you have a secured wifi connection no one can connect to it (and what use would that be anyway? LOL) They would not be able to pick up any print jobs they tried to send to it anyway. No, seriously, please don't worry about that at all. Lastly, I am not sure what you are talking about when you say you have to connect to a Canon printer server...all that happens is your device, be it a computer, iPad, tablet etc talks to the printer that lives in your house. That's it - there are no servers you need to connect to in order to get printing jobs done. Anyone telling you that you do is feeding you a line of bull. I am glad you came back here to get the straight goods. You will have to let me know how you like your printer once you get it. Thanks so much for commenting and asking questions - I really do enjoy talking to the people who watch videos on my channel. This is the best part of UA-cam in my opinion. Have a wonderful day/night. 😃😊🤗👌📹🎬
You're literally the best thanks for the clarification. I have another question unfortunately, do I need another kind of ink to print with "Glossy photo paper" or any other kind of paper such as "Decal paper" or transfer paper? I was gonna buy both decal, and transfer paper/glossy photo paper but was worried that I needed some kind of special different ink so I left them. As for the ink do I need to specifically buy CANON ink or does each printer have its own model ink for example when purchasing online do I need to type "CANON MG3620 ink" or just CANON ink? I'm just completely new to all this so my questions are really beginner-like. LOL!
Thanks again! Perhaps you can help with another question. Now that my daughter and I installed the cartridge correctly, we cannot figure out why the printer won't print. I says "offline". We have tried several times to get the printer and both of our laptops to connect. The color cartridge is empty, but we figured with at new black cartridge alone, we would be fine...ack!
Hello again Tara, I would be happy to help figure this problem out...if I can. It is hard when everything is not right in front of me but I will try. Okay, offline (to me) means it is recognized on the network but not turned on. As for not connecting to either of your laptops try this: Make sure that the printer is turned on. Press & hold the [Wi-Fi] button on the top of the printer until the alarm lamp flashes once. Make sure that the lamp next to this button starts to flash blue and then go to your access point and press the [WPS] button within 2 minutes. That should get it connected to your router. Have one of you tried installing the printer via a USB printer cable (sold separately)? I only ask because when I originally set my printer up I had to connect my computer to it via USB printer cable initially for it to be found and recognized by the network. Then my husband had no trouble connecting to it straight off the network. I just had a thought...you said the color cartridge is empty - so it was connected to your laptops before? What changed? The final part of your question is easier. In your control panel where your devices are setup go to CONTROL PANEL > DEVICES AND PRINTERS...locate your Canon printer icon and right click on it with your mouse > choose Printing Preferences from the drop-down menu. Once the printing preferences box opens up you will see at the bottom of the left-hand column Ink Cartridge Settings - clicking on that icon opens up a dialog box where you can choose to print with both color and the black cartridge, color only, or black only. Mine is set for black only currently since I don't need color for what I print. I hope this helps...if not I will try to help further with some answers to the questions I asked you in this reply. 😀
@@SusanMillard You definitely helped me to decide to purchase this printer. Unfortunately, with school starting all the major retailers are sold out! :-(
Well hello, Megan from sunny Scotland. Thank you for watching I am glad I could help. Scotland is my heritage btw. Blessings from me here in sunny Northern Ontario Canada. Have a wonderful day. :)
Hi there!, I just bought the new black ink cartridge. I did not buy the color 240 because I didn need it. Im trying to print but on my computer it says ink cartridge not recognized because I dont have the color version. Thats very weird. DO I have to adjust something on my computer hardware?
If you put the black ink cartridge in the spot where the black goes it does not matter if the color cartridge is full or not. I just left the empty color cartridge in there so I have a handy number reference should I ever want to replace it in the future. Anyway, to print in black only go through the following steps to adjust your settings in the printer preferences section in you control panel. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and your great question. 🖐😎
@@SusanMillard Thanks for all the info! My printer kept saying "operation is required on printer" everytime I try and print. For some reason this time it did.

Hello Quentin, thanks so much for watching and for your excellent question. I get this one a lot. I kind of answered that question for the person below you (she was trying to print in black ink only) in the comments but I have copied and pasted it here for your convenience. Hi, thanks for watching...sure you can, that is what I use Black only. Here is how you set the printing preferences on your computer to tell your printer to only use the black cartridge. n your control panel where your devices are setup go to CONTROL PANEL > DEVICES AND PRINTERS...locate your Canon printer icon and right click on it with your mouse > choose Printing Preferences from the drop-down menu.
I got a Q that needs to have an appropriate A for a problem with my Pixma when scanning photo on it. Such question is as follows: I had been scanning some colored pics on my Canon Pixma 4120, unfortunately the outcome of them are always seen in full red. Please tell me why? Thank you very much in advance as soon as I would have your A.
Thank you for watching...I am not able to answer your question, sorry, my Canon Pixma is a model 3520. Have you searched out Canon's website to see if there is some troubleshooting tips for you there? Thanks for watching and for your great question which I am unfortunately unable to answer.
I believe you can but you may need an app to connect to it. It is wireless. I have only connected to it wirelessly through my computer though so I can't be certain. Sorry, wish I had a better answer for you.
Amazing tutorial. Definitely gonna use this whenever I buy my 1st ever printer. I have a question Susan. I wanna buy this printer mainly to print out stickers using either Sticker Paper or Shipping Label Paper(which I hear is cheaper for sticker printing). Is this printer able to use that kind of paper? I'm new to printers. Or do printers normally only run with some brand papers? I just need one to print out stickers for my daughter, just for fun, nothing serious. Will this printer get this simple job done or I should consider another printer because this one isn't able to do that job?
Hi, thanks very much for watching, your compliments and your excellent question. I have not used my printer to print stickers I checked my printer settings available through my control panel on my PC. Here is what I found...Prints on Plain paper, photo paper, envelope, Hagaki & Other papers -> High-Resolution Paper, T-Shirt Transfers & Other Photo Paper. That being said, I do not see why it would not also do stickers or shipping label paper as some photo papers are much stiffer than regular plain paper. I would imagine if you put the setting on T-Shirt Transfer it would get the job done that you want it to do. It is your call, of course, on whether to buy this particular model of the printer but I love the reliability I have had out of it over the years and the ink price is not terrible. Since your goal is to print stickers for you daughter, just for fun it might be worth giving it a try. If it ends up not being able to do as you want you could always choose to resell it and get some of your investment back (particularly if you keep the box and paperwork with it). Good luck, and thanks again for your wonderful response - I really appreciate it. 🤗👋
Thank you so much for actually taking the time out of your day to check up on the settings, and responding. I'll definitely give it a go after your response thanks for the clearup. One last thing sorry to bother, but how's the Wifi printing out of mobile/laptop/tablet devices? I hear this printer has given people issues connecting to the device because the printer name wouldn't show up on wifi. Has this issue happened to you?
Oh, you're welcome! 😊 I actually enjoy talking to people, in the comment section, who watch my videos as one of the main reasons I make videos for UA-cam is because I like being able to help people. Asking me another question is no bother either. 😃 As far as the WiFi printing I have not had any issues like the one you are describing at all. Our printer lives in another room and both my husband and I have our computers in different rooms as well. On top of that, I am running a PC and my husband has an iMac desktop computer and his iPad all of which connect to and send print jobs to the printer with no problems at all. Thanks for asking these questions - you have no idea how many people you may be helping. Quite often people will watch a video and then check out the comment section to see what others thought of it and when they come across a question and an answer they learn something too. So, in a way, you are helping me help others too. 🤗👌💙
Ayye! That's wassup I'm glad we got people like you coming up on UA-cam to help others, and that's a fact. I often always look through the comment section to check up on question I want answered, thankfully I asked it here and found a HUGE clearup of question from your responses. That's weird that other people were having this kind of wifi problem. Is the printer by any chance compatible with all devices? Or did you set it up using the disk it comes with on the computer because I hear there's two ways of setting it up, one being with your mobile devices, and the other with the computer. How'd you do it? If I for whatever reason end up having the wifi issue is are you able to use this wired up with some sort of USB? Or is this strictly wireless? Also can I do offline printing incase my wifi is down through my mobile device through bluetooth or something?
Aww, thanks 😊. It is weird that other people were having the wifi problem but I wonder if it was the printer causing the issue or their network or placement (what I mean is having the printer on a different floor in the house instead of the same level). All kinds of factors could go into wifi issues. Some people are too quick to blame one thing without investigating what is really going on. If you have an issue with wifi you can use a printer cable to connect the printer to your computer (you have to purchase one separately as it doesn't come with one). This cable has a squarish connector on one end and a USB connector on the other. The USB goes into your computer USB port. In fact, I did use the cd that came with the printer to set it up on my computer first time and had to connect the printer cable briefly to establish the printer on our wifi network. My husband did not have to connect via a printer cable just found it on the network and connected. Easy peasy. It is compatible with both Mac and PC..no worries there. If your wifi goes down you can still connect through the printer cable to get a job done or until your wifi is back up and running. I don't believe it is connectable through Bluetooth though. Hope this helps answer your questions. 😃👍 Have a good night, my friend. It is now past 11 PM and I need to get up in the morning. 😉
Hi, that's a great question! As I understand it when copying you either hit the black start button or the color start button on the bottom of the left side panel. As far as scanning and printing from your computer you need to set the ink selection for either color or black and white via the settings found in your control panel for your printer. To do that go to your control panel and click on devices and printers > locate and right click on your Canon MG 3520 choose printer properties from the drop down menu > under the maintenance tab on the lower left corner you will find ink cartridge settings and when you click on that you can set it to always print with black only, color only or both black and color. Hope this helps! 😃📹🎬 Thank you so much for watching and for asking your question, it is much appreciated.
Hi, thanks for watching. If you go into your printing preferences in your control panel on your computer you can set the printing to draft quality instead of normal or high quality. There is also grayscale printing which would be less intense colourwise. Go to your control panel > Devices & Printers > Cannon MG3500 series Printer > right click and choose Printing Preferences > choose Main tab at top and you should see your options I have listed above for draft or grayscale, there is also an option to set Colour/Intensity manually. If you set these settings in the control panel it will affect the printer globally meaning it will set it as such until you change it instead of try to remember to lighten things each time you use the printer. 😎👍 Hope this helps. Thanks for the great question.
Really quick answer to your excellent question - absolutely not! I do not print in color usually so when it ran out I just left the color cartridge right where it is and just refill the black. I usually use the XL although I am hoping to give the 240XXL a try soon. There are settings in the printer section of your control panel on your computer where you can choose to print only in black too or you can just leave it as is and only the tanks you have ink in will deposit ink on whatever you print so in your case and mine it will just print in black. Hope this helps - thanks for watching. 👋😎
@@SusanMillard I threw away the color one because I thought it was floating the printer because it was done and I really don't use it often I just bought a black ink cartridge
@@TheAngelina3753 That's okay....it wouldn't explode in the printer...mine has been in there dry for months and months now with no ill effect, it should be fine with just the black cartridge in there. 😁👌
You're welcome and thank you for watching. I appreciate you letting me know that my video helped you. Have a wonderful night... you've certainly made mine! 😁🤗
So, I did that for both Black and Color tanks ((both XL) and after fewer than 25 pages printed (mostly B/W copies, the software says the color tank is empty and the black is very low. Is there any way in the utilities to tell the printer that there are new.full tanks?
Hi, thanks for your great question. I am not familiar with a way in the utilities to tell the printer that there are new, full tanks. They should be recognized as new tanks when they are Canon brand tanks and not refilled tanks. I did some research on the internet and found this idea to try. It may work as you are basically resetting the printer totally. UNPLUG your printer _power cord_ (just turning it off isn't good enough, UNPLUG the power for 35 seconds) Plug it back in. Send print job. Printer will beep and give ink cartridge refill error message(s) _Now_ is the time to press 'Stop' for 10 seconds... (do it again for the second error if you changed both cartridges) The Printer will 'contemplate life' for "a little while" (about 2 minutes) then come back to life again. Now you can print!-) When the printer is unplugged for 35 seconds it should reset the printer and clear the memory of any errors until it is plugged in and does a self-diagnostic on initial bootup. Perhaps then it will recognize the new tanks. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave your question. =)
Thanks for watching and for leaving me your comment/question. Hmm, if it has the same numbers it should be the right one...maybe it is a standard size cartridge instead of an XL? As for the blinking lights, you may need to reset your printer. Unplug it for a count of ten and plug it back in - that should make it do a self-check when it starts up and could clear the lights once it recognizes the cartridge. Just a guess since I am not there, hope that helps. 😀👌😊
Hi, thanks for watching and leaving me your excellent question. From my experience if the lights are out for the color and black ink that means they are full. The light comes on to warn you that you need new cartridges. So, I would say YES it is totally normal that the lights go out when you change out the cartridges. 😁👊👌
Thanks for the compliment, sorry to hear that your black cartridge doesn't come across so that you can get it out. Maybe resetting your printer will make things line up the way they should. Unplug your printer from the wall...leave it even 5-10 minutes then plug it back in again. It should do a self check on boot up when you turn it on. Hopefully this will realign the cartridges so they perform properly and slide to give you access. Hope this helps! 😎 Thanks for letting me know about your problem so I can try to help and thanks for watching.
Hi, thanks for watching. I am not sure I understand your question...the printer was about $55. Canadian when I bought it 4 years ago. The ink tanks vary in price with the store you go to and the size of the cartridge. The XL black tanks usually cost $40 Canadian where we buy them. I hope that answers your question. 😀

LOL!
Perfect......Thank you....Great instructions. I so appreciate your help.

Thank you for the subtitles in Spanish, your video is very explain.
Thanks so much Susan! I will give it another try!

Can I just replace the black cartridge as the color is added expense?
Hi, thanks for watching...sure you can, that is what I use Black only. Here is how you set the printing preferences on your computer to tell your printer to only use the black cartridge.
n your control panel where your devices are setup go to CONTROL PANEL > DEVICES AND PRINTERS...locate your Canon printer icon and right click on it with your mouse > choose Printing Preferences from the drop-down menu. I got a Q that needs to have an appropriate A for a problem with my Pixma when scanning photo on it. Such question is as follows:
I had been scanning some colored pics on my Canon Pixma 4120, unfortunately the outcome of them are always seen in full red.
Can I use the printer with only data internet from a phone?

As far as the WiFi printing I have not had any issues like the one you are describing at all.
Thanks for posting this , it is really helpful

Quick question how do you switch to black and white ink using the buttons on the printer??
How do I lighten the printer..making every scan and just printed document less dark
Quick question do you have to have both ink or you can just have the black so it can work
Really quick answer to your excellent question - absolutely not! 👋😎

UNPLUG your printer _power cord_ (just turning it off isn't good enough, UNPLUG the power for 35 seconds)
Plug it back in.
Send print job.
Printer will beep and give ink cartridge refill error message(s)
_Now_ is the time to press 'Stop' for 10 seconds...
(do it again for the second error if you changed both cartridges)
The Printer will 'contemplate life' for "a little while" (about 2 minutes) then come back to life again.
Now you can print!-)
When the printer is unplugged for 35 seconds it should reset the printer and clear the memory of any errors until it is plugged in and does a self-diagnostic on initial bootup. Perhaps then it will recognize the new tanks.
Hope this helps, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave your question. =)

hello my lights are blinking after I changed the cartridge..maybe I got the wrong one..it has the same numbers but it looks a bit smaller
hi ! the color ink and black ink lights are off after I changed the cartridge is that normal?
Hi, thanks for watching and leaving me your excellent question. From my experience if the lights are out for the color and black ink that means they are full. The light comes on to warn you that you need new cartridges. So, I would say YES it is totally normal that the lights go out when you change out the cartridges. 😁👊👌

Great video. Thanks
Great video, but my black cartridge doesn't come across so that I can get it out
Thanks for the compliment, sorry to hear that your black cartridge doesn't come across so that you can get it out.

How much are these?
Hi, thanks for watching. I am not sure I understand your question...the printer was about $55. Canadian when I bought it 4 years ago. The ink tanks vary in price with the store you go to and the size of the cartridge. The XL black tanks usually cost $40 Canadian where we buy them. I hope that answers your question. 😀
