Its not about corruption...Its a love song to radio.. with a realistic view of how commercial it is at the same time.. Neil's thoughts on it was as he was growing up and it always had the perfect music to fit his mood.
Musicians though are in a particular spot of being able to sell art to the masses with a special freedom of expression. There may be the look of artistic character, of noble intention, but often it's easier for a group to create some false profundity, fake depth if you will. Selling out in their eyes seems to be compromising one's morals for something fleeting like money.
Rush has roped Scribe into being another big fan. Way to go Scribe!!! Glad you could join us Rush heads. There is soooo much more to discover about Rush. Thanks for this video.
Jonathon Battiest - Hands down my fav of all time. I could listen to this song over and over and I’ll still have my feet and hands banging on the floor and desk or wherever I happen to be at that moment... even air drumming!!
it's fun watching someone who has never experienced the music of Rush discover how great it is for the first time. if you like Rush you are very lucky because they have so much music for you to discover, album after album after album, year after year of great timeless music.
It was my introduction to the band. To prog rock in general, thinking on it. Was so different from everything else on the radio. And this song broke them to a wider audience like me.
@David Hargreaves UK often had a different schedule I definitely first heard this at the very start of 1980, and went out and bought 6 of their albums at once.
YOU GOT IT!!!! The transitions toward the end of the song is supposed to simulate someone flipping between different genres while listening to the radio. More Rush please, preferably Test for Echo 😊

Yeah! Well done! This song introduce to Power Trio, back in 1982, and since then this band became the soundtrack of my life. "This is for sure a morning song" Totally agree!
This song is a tribute to the Toronto radio station CFNY 102.1 back in 1980 when it was cool and embodied “The Spirit of [FM] Radio”, but became a an anthem to all rebel radio that played new experimental rock and pop music.

It’s great that you give props to the transitions. Frequent time signature changes, complex instrumental layering, and poetic lyrics are all hallmarks of progressive rock. It was bands like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Rush, etc. that provided me with what became my favorite genre of rock music.
"One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." Such a powerful lyric, one of my favorites by Mr. Peart. That man drops little bombs like these in many Rush songs. Cheers!

Great reaction! Love your enthusiasm. Rush were always pushing, looking for new sounds, and grooves. In late 1979, the Police (band) were getting huge, and they had a reggae'ish sound. The Police had excellent musicians (Sting for one), but drummer Stuart Copeland was someone who Rush's drummer was very impressed with. Check out the Police some time, they are excellent.

Rush was the first band my wife and I saw together on a date in Lakeland Florida on September 20, 1980. That was 40 years ago and we're still together, still rocking and Rush's music still kicks ass!
The song that propelled them from basic group to superstars is the 7 part song 2112 a 20 minute eargasm. The song is a story of a dystopian future that forbids music.
Thank you with the way young people are exited about Rush. Their music wiil live on forever. That song and album came out in 1980. They were so ahead of their time.
1st, RUSH is Canadian, & we could not be more proud of how they represented us, 2nd, they were brilliant musicians & all could play more than 3 instruments, & only needed 3 of them to sound like a band of 5, and lastly, once you hear them, you are never the same, & now, you are one of us !!! LOL 😊 Oh ya, one of the reasons there were so many transitions in this particular song, is because RUSH, wanted to give the listeners the feeling of changing the channel on the radio!!!
I've seen Rush live a good handful of times. They opened every show I saw with this song. The mention of glittering prizes and endless compromises, I believe is a reference to when the music industry tried to steer them in a different direction early on. Rush more or less gave them the middle finger with 2112. That album put them on the map and established their integrity forever. The next time you react to Rush, try to do it live to experience the energy of the crowd. While a select few may match them, no band surpasses Rush's stage presence.
You’ll come to learn that Rush has a whole lot in their arsenal! Rock, reggae, rap (yes there is 1), jazz, orchestral, hard rock/metal, etc. You’re only listening to a two year, two album period (1980-81). The song with the rap, which you may (or may not 😂) appreciate is “Roll The Bones”. It’s from 1991 - ten years later. That’d be fun to do next!

I love your reaction to Rush. I'm a Rush nerd from back in the day and a drummer. The drummer in this song plays a Glockenspiel. A percussion instrument with tuned keys like a piano. Later he started using electronic percussion because you can trigger so many sounds. Love your openess to music.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this song is that it was a hit that got radio play, even though the lyrics are about how fundamentally corrupt radio is.
"But if I really say it... the radio won't play it... unless I lay it... between the lines"
(They didn't hide it much on this track, though!)
You give radio companies too much credit for thinking they listen to the lyrics for anything other than obscenities.
It was the only one many radio stations understood at the rime , Rush fans where at least a decade ahead, and the next generation coming on line now
It is more about how corrupt the entire music biz is.
Its not about corruption...Its a love song to radio.. with a realistic view of how commercial it is at the same time.. Neil's thoughts on it was as he was growing up and it always had the perfect music to fit his mood.

One of my Faves..
The dancer slows her frantic pace
In pain and desperation
Her aching limbs and downcast face
Aglow with perspiration
Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire
With just the briefest pause
The flooding through her memory
The echoes of old applause
She limps across the floor
And closes her bedroom door
The writer stares with glassy eyes
Defies the empty page
His beard is white, his face is lined
And streaked with tears of rage
Thirty years ago, how the words would flow
With passion and precision
But now his mind is dark and dulled
By sickness and indecision
And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more
~ The Wolf.
The last (and most important verse was left out) ....
Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we’d like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you, the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee....
Your reactions are awesome. Never saw anyone so happy jammin' to Rush as you were right before the 'reggae' transition.

I don't know you but it made me very happy to see you discovering this great band and finding joy in their music. There's really nothing else like them.
Rush is the third time all-selling band behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Loved your responses to this song. I never get tired of this gorgeous song. Pure joy!
Rush is way behind the stones & Beatles in record sales"..... not to mention led zeppelin"/ Elvis/ Elton John & many other rock bands"....
I love when they switch to the difference of the radio to a concert hall.
This song was my intro to Rush, back when it first came out. I love just how wide ranging it is.
Another great reaction as always!!😉 If I may, I would like to suggest Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs, it's a bluesy rock so to speak but I think you'll really enjoy it.
LOL Scribe! Your reaction to the reggae section sold me. Subscribing!! This is my favorite Rush song. Thank you so much for sharing
She is proof positive that it IS possible to dance to Rush's music! Jam it up girl!
You ain’t heard nothing yet. You need to listen to La Villa Strangiatto, The Necromancer, Xanadu, 2112.
Yes...entire side 1 of 2112...they played that as their encore when I saw them live.
It was fun watching you through the transitions and the... you bang your head!! HA! Welcome to Rush! Bless you lady!
I love your reaction to Rush. I'm a Rush nerd from back in the day and a drummer. The drummer in this song plays a Glockenspiel. A percussion instrument with tuned keys like a piano. Later he started using electronic percussion because you can trigger so many sounds. Love your openess to music.
