  • We leave out early one early December morning to head to the Holopaw Ural Gathering (HUG) for 2018. There will be 3 Urals covering about 400 miles of I75 and the Florida Turnpike. All goes well (enough) but not without some excitement along the way.

    Great Video, thanks for sharing.
    Oil leakage between alternator and housing is quite nornal. It occurs always if you ride longer terms at higher speed. I got the same prob on my '13 retro, but i have no oil on my boot.

    Subscribed and very cool how you explain your travels. I'm 18 and working on my drivers license then motorcycle license. I've been admiring Urals for a while. How good is it for a first motorcycle? And any major or minor issues owning one? Thanks

      I would suggest you take a motorcycle safety class on a 2 wheeler, don't know where you are, but in the US most states offer a class where if you complete and pass you can get your license immediately without taking the state's test (you do need your regular driver's license first). Learning on a 2 wheeler will give you some confidence and understanding you can carry with you to a sidecar rig. With a sidecar, things change with handling, you can take it in a parking lot, learn to fly the chair (ride on 2 wheels with the sidecar tire off the ground) etc... and get the feel of the handling before venturing out. As for reliability, a Ural can be reliable if well maintained. My advice, buy one a year to two old with at least 5000 or so miles on it, let someone else sort out all the bugs and prove it is a good rig or one with underlying issues. Find a rally, go by and meet some of the folks, they generally love to show off their rigs!

    Probly the only one who misses the old 55 mph speed limit. Given the cell phone/texting dangers causing accidents out there... the limit could pose a return. Another probly exists in the fact that i daily drive a 50 chevy pickup with the 235 cubic inch engine in it, as well as a DU69160 1968 Triumph Trophy Sports. 31719

      Yep, I feel the pain, I've become an "old fart" and find myself cruising at 45mph at times to everyone else's frustration. I just don't seem to be in such a big hurry to get anywhere these days.

    It seems like you constantly get into trouble with Ural. For the $20 K bike the owning so unreliable one looks like a masochism

    I'm also JamesAllmond on youtube! Good ride, and we really did 60 to 65 the entire way...except where we didn't.
    You can watch me videoing them starting at ua-cam.com/video/hcyDmcJU5AM/v-deo.html broken into 4 parts.
    Little or no talking on mine, just riding down the road, engine and wind noise... Mix of 360˚ and regular video.

      oh no sympathy, but as long as the boot is wet, there is engine left in the engine! Plus we are heading to a Ural shop... ;-)

      and I've blown all the gaskets on the front of my '15 M70's engine...at one time...

    Thanks for sharing your travels. It's always interesting to see how other groups approach longer trips with Urals.

      We had a blast on the trip, took our time, enjoyed some of the scenery and took the long way round after we got off the interstate. Both unfortunately (and fortunately) we all work so we only took Thursday off to get there and Friday to enjoy the day. But we had to haul it back Sunday to get home, that might be Part 3, the last 150 miles for one of the 3 rigs was on a trailer.

    I don`t think you have an oil leak , rather you are fortunate in that you`ve got an extra feature of the patented rust prevention . Stops your bike and your boots form going rusty.

    Do you counter steer in the corners on a Ural? Do you ever do long trips with a passenger in the side car?

    • @GoneUraling
      @GoneUraling  3 роки тому +1

      No counter steering, the direction you turn is the direction you go. I have done long trips with 200# of gear and stuff loaded in the sidecar, I have gone several hundred miles with a passenger, I have had many 40 to 60 mile trips with a 100 lbs Siberian Husky in the sidecar. We just returned from about a 500 mile trip, I carried about 100 lbs in the sidecar the entire time, my wife's rig carried about 150 lbs.

    At a push what would be the MPG on a retro ural.tank looks much bigger.nice video.

    • @GoneUraling
      @GoneUraling  4 роки тому

      Retro holds 5.5 gallons, on the 2017 I get from 36 to 38 mpg with "normal" driving, I got 45 mpg driving the coast this last run, but we stayed about 40mph (speed limits you know) the entire time and when I push it on the interstate for hours staying over 60mph I get about 32 to 34 mpg.

      We rode the full trip same day, covered about 440 miles or so. No need to break it up.

    I have heard about a leak in that spot before

    • @GoneUraling
      @GoneUraling  5 років тому

      Yep, I was sort of expecting that one, one reason I wasn't so concerned once I confirmed it was from the alternator/engine connection.
