- Horst Petri was born on the 18th of March 1913 in Pfuhlsborn then part of the German Empire. After graduating from high school, Horst trained as a farmer and received a graduate degree in farming in 1935.
On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. Horst joined the Nazi Party in 1932 and in 1934 he became a member of the SS. In 1936 he met the 16-year-old Erna and despite her father's objections, they quickly began a relationship. A year later, Erna became pregnant and the two got married in 1938. The child was a boy and several years later they had one more child, a daughter, who was born in January 1943.
In 1939, Horst received SS training at the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps and was promoted to Second Lieutenant.
The Second World War began on 1 September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland.

Another one I've never heard of. You are the best WWII historian on YT these days. I'm not in any way confessing that I'm an expert on all things WWII, but to hear of someone I never have before, considering the huge volume of books I own, is always refreshing.

Wrong. WWII began on September , 1939 with the invasion of Poland.
The reason most young people today don't care about this, is because they have seen it so much. I remember reading about a group of kids laughing at images like these. It's been eighty years and millions of tv shows, movies, news reels, etc. It hasn't helped.

@@kirkc4696 Most states have universities that specialize in agriculture. The science behind increasing crop yield, making crops more heat tolerant and pest control will only become more important as the population continues to grow.
During the seige of Stalingrad, a dozen Russian agriculture scientists died of starvation, even though they were surrounded by seeds that were destined for the seed bank. The seeds are now in the Doomsday Vault on an island east of Greenland. Yeah, WTF. If farmers can't grow their crop, you starve!
