That controller setup is truly a weapon to surpass metal gear
McGuyver is proud
Biblical
Lol.
That was epic !! (even if it costs $$$ from classicpc..)
so cray
Most excellent video Sir!!! Makes me wonder if the heads just told them to wrap things up quickly on the game, so they could use the team to help develop more 16 bit stuff.
You are a precious "piece" of the import gaming scene that was missing. Congrats for your videos, all of them are enjoyable productions.
Still quite fascinating how Yoshitaka Tamaki (Shining Force, Alundra) got his start doing the promo art for this game. It's so underrated even among Japanese players/PC enthusiasts from that era, probably because of the very late non-Koei/-Falcom PC-88 release. I hesitate to deem many of these games truly forgotten, but this would be a good candidate.
Glad someone noticed. The game looks like a mix between Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force.
I might want to check this game out just for the art
You can really tell it's the Shining/Feda/Alundra/Landstalker guy Tamaki from that nice signature artwork. Guy does draw a good wolfman too, I swear they're in every game he was involved with
Gotta love those wolf characters though. Always badass and screamed "fantasy RPG" when they are on the team. Gerhalt from SF2 was always an awesome addition!
The entire gamepad section was hilarious. Thanks for the video!
If he had an angry voice while explaining it, that part could've passed for an AVGN spoof.
I appreciate your attention to detail when filming boxes, manuals, and other physical media related to the games you cover, love that little "Now! Let's play ENIX!!" picture on the disk cases
I love this series. You're doing a great service for those of us who missed out on this chapter of video game history.
The boss for the second fang - with the wings and scorpion tail - seems to be a manticore, a mythical man-eating beast.
It's a shame there are so many of these classic JRPGs that are more or less consigned to the dust bins of history due to the incredibly low likelihood anyone will ever bring them forward.
Makes me wish I had the money to start a little studio to just, like, do simple updates to so many of these and english translations, maybe for release in a budget combo pack on a modern platform. Then again, with the way Squeenix's business model is working nowadays, it's probably highly doubtful they'd be willing to license even such old and ignored IPs for that kind of thing.
I dunno; that business model has already involved selling off some IPs that they don't want to bother with anymore for what is, frankly, peanuts. I bet if Night Dive or somebody made an offer, they'd gladly part with this stuff outright.
Be nice if they brought it to Google play like the final fantasy games and dragon quests. I buy all the square enix games on it.
the artwork is amazing, as all Tamaki-san's works.
I saw that video clip of Touhou 2. I can't wait to see you cover it and the rest of the series on PC-98.
How to do old school gaming right, find every possible way to make the game play the way you want. love it!
I'm glad I clicked this video! Learned a lot, and I plan on watching more.
Really great stuff!
I'm so glad I stumbled on your goldmine of a channel!
FANG you so much for being such a dedicated creator, I love the vibes of PC-88/98 games
Absolute gem of a channel. Reminds me of old videos I'd watch as a kid. I love this stuff
I love the idea of the master joining the crew instead of the student. And that bit where the master tricks the villain into revealing himself was great.
Always look forward to your PC-88/98 game retrospectives, such an interesting body of games that the majority of people in the west were none the wiser of for so long.
Excellent review as usual!
What it always grind my gears in RPGs is how we always end up looking for the thing they used to defeat the evil lord. But if it was so important and crucial to defeat him, why the hell they always forget about it?
Wow, it's pretty cool that these videos exist!
Yoshitaka Tamaki did more than just "design the monsters" in FANGS, he illustrated all the promotional artwork and in-manual art, designed the characters via his illustrations, he was the character and monster designer for Land Stalker, Shining and the Darkness, Shining Force 1, Shining Soul I & II, the GBA remake of Shining Force I, and designed the characters and monsters for Lady Stalker, Time Stalkers (Dream Cast), and character designer and lead illustrartor on ALUNDRA, and the super famicom strategy RPG FEDA.....
Indeed he did all the artwork on the package of Fangs and in the manual. Too bad the game's credits only credit him with "monster design".
I love these videos so damn much dude!
The details about keyboard emulators were very interesting ! Great vid !
The kanji in this game are surprisingly readable compared with other PC-88 games reviewed at this channel.
"Bwahaha you can't defeat me!" Oh that made me chuckle
9:27 "Here's what the entire contraption looks like"
That's beautiful - 10 out of 10
> Mentions a race of wolf-people who are endangered as a big part of the plot
> Never have one as a party member
> Those cowards
In all seriousness, it's cool to see an Enix JRPG that isn't Dragon Quest. I adore DQ, and it's cool to see Enix's roots outside of that franchise.
I absolutely adore the character artwork for the Shining series, it was a pleasant surprise to see the same artist work on this too!
I love the editing and voice acting comedic timing of the Basement Brothers.
You always do such great videos, really appreciate the effort they take
The Double Dragon Mark Dacascos clips throw me off, hahaha
Oh, I would play this game, I like the monsters design.
Rockin content! I like the quality shots/scans of the included paperwork. Go the the "Hell" Fucker really does hit hard too lol
If only we have an English translation :c
Great video as always! I really like your content.
Wow just found your video out of thin air and it did not disappoint. You've earn yourself a sub! Thanks for the content that I've never would have known about
Oh boy. That chain of adapters is some BetaFlop-D level shenanigans.
love the double dragon movie scene sampled in haha
Love your channel to death, these old japanese pc games are so fascinating.
Wow, I'm really surprised they did nothing with the Wolf Person angle. Missed opportunity if you ask me
I'm surprised that the protagonist isn't a half-human half-wolfman. The opening makes a big deal about his parents meeting, but never tells us why we should care... which is why I just skipped over it in the video. It would make too much sense if one of his parents was human and the other a wolfperson.
Also, yeah. They could have had him transform into a wolf during battle... or have super keen sense of scent and hearing or something. You're right. Total missed opportunity.
@@BasementBrothers I kept thinking of Yamcha.
That battle theme is great
Wow, the UA-cam algorithm sometimes shows me bangers. I really enjoyed the video and here's a new subscriber for you. Gotta binge your content!
Wow, the controller segment was great. You're my hero dude.
Home boy did Lady Stalker for the snes too. I'd play that one but it's only in Japanese. You might like it.
I appreciate your way of looking at these old games in a way that doesn't denigrate them nor use them to complain about new RPGs. It's refreshing, modern RPGs and the unsung games of the older generation hold unique charms.
I came really close to complaining about new RPG's though, when I said that playing old RPG's is cathartic for me. New RPG's can just use up so much of one's time...
@@BasementBrothers I play a lot of new and old so I know that feeling, but I appreciate that you didn't let it distract from the game at hand and kept the video's tone positive. Personally I play a lot of new and old RPGs because they feel good at very different things nowadays.
Ahaha! I immediately yelled at my screen. "That artwork SCREAMS Feda and Shining Force!" Glad you immediately confirmed it.
All I’m gonna say is that this makes me feel blessed that all of my nostalgia is linked to home console games that are easily available for free through emulators… this sounds exhausting!
Thank you for making this kind of content, the attention you put into details is awesome.
I'm glad Im not the only one who thinks of double dragon when I hear "Romulus and Remus". Man I loved that movie as a kid.
I completed Ys Seven a couple of days ago and it sure made me nostalgic for the early games in the series where bosses just attacked you without a lengthy intro. I'll gladly take a "Bwahaha! You won't stand a chance!" right now
yeah the 2d and 2.5d era are the best for ys imo. Then ys origin was like a love letter to the classics
i randomly had this video recommended to me and i’m very happy it was; this was a very entertaining and funny exploration of a game i never would have known existed otherwise. great stuff!
This is awesome that the algorithm is actually recommending our channel to so many people. Glad to see you wandered in. Stick around!
Found your channel recently and loving your videos. I'm having a fantastic time with the Legend of Heroes and Ys videos.
The controller bit in this one was great. So fascinating!!
So glad I've stumbled upon your channel. Excellent video, thank you.
Amazing stuff as always, thanks for providing a rare glimpse at the actual package and physical piece of software, first time I see some of this early Tamaki stuff.
This has really great music.
Each day when i see another obscure game i never hear about is bright day and if have great music that is even brighter :D And this your controller setup was wild.
The art was definitely done by the makers of the "Shining" series early sega games. :3 Pretty cool.
1,000 likes and not a single unsatisfied viewer... You've done it, boys.
That’s contraption shows how dedicated you are to making things work. I would have done the same
Good on you for managing that Houdini hookup for the keyboard-to-controller setup. It always feels good to overcome issues like that :p
Keep up the great work!
I'll be watching this later and I'm fairly certain I'll greatly enjoy it based on prior experience. So have a pre-like and a comment for algorithmic purposes.
[Go the the "Hell"!! Fucker!]
Ha. Even today Engrish still cracks me up. :D
Thanks for always taking your time to show these amazing games. But let's be honest, the controller setup is the highlight of the video.
I can't believe that footage from Double Dragon: The Movie somehow became relevant to this video.
That double dragon clip made the video extra epic!
Eventually I will have watched all his videos. That will be a sad day.
Huh I can see the sort of monster design from Shining Force in these sprites yeah. I should look up what else that artist has done because Shining Force was my favorite game in sixth grade. And the art was always a part of that.
Oooh, that shining force art!
Thanks for the hard directions to show us all the good o times from the past. 😎🤙
great review. the most interesting parts of this video were the convoluted controller setup and re-programming and your epic thicc hairy forearms
Sweet illustrations by the Shining Force artist😁
Wishes lot of people try this game from this gen, even Farland Story was pretty fun at their own
I hope I can cover Farland Story some day on PC-98 Paradise! I was a big fan back in the early 2000's...
Note: Numitor is (likely) a reference to the mythological King of Alba Longa (a precussor to Rome).
good video as usual
Very nice video, thank you.
You brought me back to 2nd grade with those floppy disks.
Would love to see a videos for 46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinka Ron/EVO: The Search for Eden, G.O.D. Mezameyo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe/G.O.D.: Heed the Call to Awaken and Mystic Ark. Mystic Ark is a underrated and surreal gem of an Enix JRPG with a great soundtrack.
Pretty neat concepts in the game with the music that damages youand the portal that removes your ally. The spells and items really come in handy to stope them. Not sure if they exist in other games.
Highly engaging!
quite a relic. interesting find
You'll definitely have to do a PC-88 Paradise video for Rance sometime. Show us where the huge franchise began.
Reminds me of 7th Saga! Very cool!
The second I saw that box art I thought "I bet that's the guy who did Shining Force and Feda..."
I don’t think you have enough adapters in that controller setup 😂 another great video 👍🏼
The artwork looks like fist of the north star
I laughed out loud at the controller linking setup
Great review.
Owned and played the game on 2011/2012 on original hardware. Understand japanese but never got really into it. Only musics were the main motivation. I did probably 3/4 boss.
Too much grinding also, but this is to be expected with an Enix Jrpg of the time.
Nice to see finally a review on this game.
One of the last game of the system with Popful Mail.
Ah, yes, have this one in the someday-backlog pile
Yeh, Bravo on that multi-converter setup ;)
Your dedication to using that tiny controller is impressive.
Watch further into the video and you can see me switch to the Genesis/Mega Drive controller!
@@BasementBrothers Oh I did, believe me. It was a great video and I enjoy seeing these old PC88/98 games. But I still remain impressed with all the hoops you jumped through just to play on controller!
i would have subscribed purely based on the fact that you got the controller to work. but I also happen to love obscure rpgs and subbed anyway.
the enemies look amazing, the field looks rough. Maybe it looks a lot better on a CRT. Very cool video, thanks!!!
Yeah I was thinking the same, I am positive that its better on a CRT.
pretty neat adding reference to that double dragon movie. wonder if there's further to elaborate the references and whys... :D
The characters in the game were raised by a wolf man, so Enix decided to name them after characters from Roman mythology who were raised by wolves.
The music reminds me of sefa master system. With the expansion Yamaha sound card.
thanks for showing this.
i am the opposite of you in one regard: i ate this sort of thing up back in the era. definitely hadn't even heard of this system in context until i saw this vid, so i didn't even know non-console Enix titles. i played most of the ones i could get my hands on. what i'm saying is i loved this sort of basic JRPG back in the day. what makes me differ is that i cannot bear to play anything this basic at this point in my life. makes me glad you basically chose an edited walkthrough with commentary for this video.
Yep. That's probably normal. I'm sure most people wouldn't want to grind through a dry old RPG like this one nowadays. Thanks for watching!
@@BasementBrothers adding the soundtrack to my playlists though, tell ya that.
How rude of that guy. I will NOT go to the "hell".
It is quite ironic that this is supposed to be one of your party members cheering you on. At first I thought the first two characters were "Evil Lord" and "Mid-boss Rival". Nice twist of expectations, I guess.
Cool!
Клыки - это действительно забытая, нет, скорее не известная игра для многих, для нашего РУ-ретро комьюнити точно, ну не считая тех кому я о ней рассказывал.
И подобных игр полно на NEC PC 8801 - это супер система
Some of that box art looks like it could be from the Shining series. Same artist?
Edit: That intro even looks very similar to the style of the Shining Force intro. And now that I think about it, I think the Takahashi brothers from Camelot started with Enix. Did they make this game?
Edit 2: And now I'm to the part where you confirm the Shining connection. ;)
