"We play Ys games because they're fun!"
Truer words have never been spoken.
Yeah but I didn't liked how he dismissed people who play because of the story. Sure, we play ys because the gameplay is fun, but the overarching lore that this franchise has is amazing, probably one of my favorites, this guy would understand that if he played the games and tried to piece the points together while enjoying the story. A secret for this kind of people: you can enjoy the gameplay and lore at the same time, in fact, I think that you would enjoy the experience more if you did. Only caring about the gameplay while ignoring totally the story of the ys series is such a waste imo
@@bakedbeef7814 not really. The real important story to care, and what you will remember, is your story when playing the game. No the cutscenes.
@@Robahue Hard disagree. The characters, their development and bonding, the background lore of the world and how all the games connect with each other are amazing, you'd be wasting all of that by ignoring them and focusing only in the gameplay
@@bakedbeef7814 ... and yet, all of that will be pointless without the fantastic music, great graphics and good gameplay to support it.
@@Robahue I agree
21:35 You legit worded my feelings on Oath in Felgahna so well.
My first exposure to Ys was on the SNES. Ys III was phenomenal. Then I was blown away by Ys Book I&II on the Turbo Duo. 🤯 I've been hooked on Ys ever since.
I rented ys III on SNES and what I mostly remember about it is that I absolutely hated it. Maybe that or Lagoon were my biggest rental disappointments ever, but Ys III is what I always remember.
I bought Ys Origin on a whim for Switch a couple years ago because it was cheap and looked like it was probably something like a top down Zelda.. I was really wary about playing another terrible Ys game but it's been a long time and looks alright on the box....
Anyway, I absolutely loved Origin, and played Ys 1 & 2 on the Turbo CD next, and ordered Ys 8. So after Ys 1 & 2 I came to.... The dreaded Ys III.... This time I decided to stick with Turbo CD for the voice and music. Loved it this time! I don't know why I couldn't have fun with it as a kid but I really hated it back then...
@@anonamatron To be fair, from what I understand the SNES port is not great and really difficult so that could have something to do with.
I played Ys 3 on Genesis and loved it. We never had the turbographix when I was a kid but when I was in college. I played they Turbo duo version of Ys book 1&2 and my mind was blown that everyone wasn’t talking about it. Like how had I had gone that long without even hearing rumors?
@@anonamatron I think part of the reason is because the hit detection in the Turbo CD version of Ys III is a lot better than that of the SNES version.
The manuals of these games are so wonderful.
They are illustration books without paying for one.
Exactly. Nowadays the illustration book is sold separately. :)
Excellent video! I don't really have anything of note to add, since you covered... pretty much everything!... so I'm just going to go on some tangents about Ys III, because I too consider it an excellent and highly underrated game!
My first experience with it was the SNES port, and unlike most people, I still -- to this day -- consider it the best port of the original Ys III. I love the Tonkinhouse sound, weird synth and all, and I think the new tracks they composed for it fit in with the game's stellar soundtrack brilliantly. I also think some of the unique arrangements they have for the existing music is QUITE good, like the added brass flairs in Seal of Time, the bizarre jazzy intro to A Searing Struggle, the all-bass kickoff to Ilvern Ruins, and the background sections taking center stage in the Elderm Mountain and Galbalan Island tracks. The SNES version is also the only official English version until Felghana that didn't muck about with the names, though some of its localization choices were... decidedly unique (like Illburns Ruins and Ballacetine Castle!).
Speaking of localization, I was a localization specialist at XSEED Games for over 8 years, and was the guy in charge of editing the translation for Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and I also got to sit in on (and ostensibly "co-direct," though I use that term loosely!) the voice recording for the PSP game. You can even hear my voice in the PSP game -- I'm the guard who says, "Presenting, the Lady of the Castle!" It took six takes, and it still sucks. I am not a voice-actor. But it was a fun experience, for sure!
It's because I was in charge of Ys: The Oath in Felghana's localization, though, that I can actually say I've played the PC-88 version of this game... in emulation, at least. Though it was basically official emulation, as the game files and emulator were given to us by Falcom themselves. We wanted to include a section on the game's website showing "before" and "after" clips of scenes from the original version of the game and Oath in Felghana, so I played about halfway through Ys III on PC-88, FRAPSing my footage the whole time. I *think* that's still up on the game's website somewhere, in fact! (EDIT: Sadly, not really. I mean, it PROBABLY is, but this is our old-old Felghana website, which was all Flash. So if you don't somehow still have a means of viewing Flash content, you have no means of seeing anything on the site. Boo!)
I was kind of blown away by it, as the game holds up beautifully -- far better than I expected it to, having never really played any old-school Japanese microcomputer games yet at that point in time. I really enjoyed capturing that footage, actually, and somewhat regret that I didn't finish playing through the game -- but I was busy with other stuff, and also playing other games, so once I had the footage I needed, I kind of let it slip by the wayside.
Today, though, I own the game physically for both PC-98 and MSX2, and likewise own a 286 PC-98 and two MSXes (a 2+ and a Turbo R). The MSX2 version... is a bit of a disgrace, though, indeed. Not only is it so slow as to be almost unplayable, the music is also reduced to 3-channel PSG, which is something I lamented about the first two games on MSX2 as well. It took Falcom until Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes before they really got the hang of composing OPLL FM music for MSX (the less said about their OPLL compositions for MSX Sorcerian, the better!), and that's really a shame, because I love the sound of the MSX's FM chip, and would've loved to hear the Ys III soundtrack rendered in it. And... would've also loved to see the game actually run at a decent clip, like Legend of Heroes does. Falcom games on MSX were definitely hit or miss, with their later games for the system mostly being hits (Xanadu MSX1! Drasle Family MSX2! Legend of Heroes!), but their earlier games for it largely being misses, sadly.
Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed my ramblings, and I want to thank you again for this nostalgia trip! Ys III will always have a special place in my heart, and this series will always have a special place on my UA-cam playlist, being one of the few English-language series covering Japanese microcomputer games -- and covering them REALLY WELL, to boot! Keep on keepin' on, man!
Living the dream: being paid to play Ys 3.
@@ceticobr Actually, since the before/after videos were entirely my idea, I played the game and recorded the footage on my own time, after work. But I was paid to play some other games from time to time, arguably, so it all balanced out in the end! ;)
Truer words could've never been said! I love the music to SNES Port that was developed by Advance Communication for Tonkin House. And I agree- I appreciate this series that he has done. It finally makes people finally respect the unknown and obscure Japanese made games that were on their PCs. I would love to compose music using all of the instruments that Advance Communication/Tonkin House used for the SNES version of Ys III, making any remix I want.
Yeah, I mean... the SNES version sounds great. Really I agree! But if I had to choose I just love me some FM synth. The way that FM "guitar" sound and others came out on the PC versions and Genesis version of the game sound so... um... Falcom! It's super nostalgia-inducing for me.
@@BasementBrothers Oh, I hear you on that. I actually agree with you that the original PC-88 FM compositions are frigging BADASS. They're among the best versions of the OST out there, honestly. It's remarkable how well Falcom was able to hit it out of the park on their first swing, as it were.
This is my favourite Ys game tbh... The TG-16 version most of all, mainly thanks to the music (also I don't mind the choppy scrolling) but most versions of this game are pretty fun I think...
This was an amazing video! I’ve only played the turbografx version but I got a whole new appreciation for the game from this video. Looking forward to playing oath in felghana someday
The music on this game, no matter what version you choose... my gosh.... And that ending track....
The SNES version was my introduction to Ys, and I loved it. Really need to find time to play more of these games!
Man this episode was so good. Im subing to the channel and saving this video in my favs
Y’s is one of my top JRPG series. I’ve been playing these games since 1992. Y’s III is awesome. The TurboGrafx CD version is my favorite because of that killer soundtrack. Thank you for putting this together. It was very fun and informative.
Man this is an excellent video. I got ys 3 on SNES years ago and was one of those people who didn't realize how much grinding you needed to do in order to start the game 😂😂
I went back to it years later and it's excellent!
Yeah this was one of those snes games that kids rented at the video store and turned it off immediately because they kept getting killed on the first screen lol. It's really fun once you get the hang of it though
Im mostly impressed with the animated background layers on a game so old. Those waterfall scenes in the quarry are amazing.
Although Ys 3 was divisive because of its "unusual" presentation, it has to be noted that Falcom was no stranger to side-scrolling games. Many Falcom RPGs were actually side-scrollers or included platforming segments, especially the Dragon Slayer series: Dragon Slayer 2 (Xanadu), Dragon Slayer 3 (Romancia), Dragon Slayer 4 (Family), Dragon Slayer 5 (Sorcerian) and the great two-part Dragon Slayer 8 (Legend of Xanadu 1 & 2).
Yes, but Ys 3 was definitely their most ambitious and graphically intense sidescroller at the time. Before 1989 their newest sidescroller was Sorcerian, and in my opinion Ys 3 is leaps and bounds beyond Sorcerian in terms of gameplay and graphics.
Indeed, but Falcom's previous sidescrollers Xanadu and Sorcerian were a huge success in Japan (especially Sorcerian with its innovative system of aging characters which could be imported from one game to another), and both games spawned a multitude of data disks and spinoffs. Ys 3 was much simpler in comparison and its popularity (at least in Japan) was not comparable.
Yes. Very true. Popularity and longevity-wise, Sorcerian was a much bigger success than Ys 3.
I actually really liked this on the genesis. I played thru it last year at the start of the pandemic
Yeah, the Genesis version is great!
I was one of those kids who played Ys III on SNES back when it first came out and immediately got turned off by not understanding RPG mechanics (I was 7 or 8) but it still got stuck in my head for years. Really happy the series continues to thrive and doing even better over the years.
I finished them all except pc88 (all my pc88 machines gave up) and windows version. Simply didn't spend enough time to finish the windows version. I started almost two years ago. :P Gonna make my own video when I'm done. You beat me to it. But I think I'll still make my own video... Maybe... Yours is very well done but I think there's a few things I'd like to mention which makes my own video worth making. A+ for this video. Love it.
Looking forward to it!
New Ys video! And only shortly after I found out about your channel! This is so great!
I would recommend this video also if you haven't seen it: ua-cam.com/video/JIcbJn-RylQ/v-deo.html. Maybe you should review some games mentioned here like the Xanadu games and Sorcerian series, or Popful Mail
Yes. That's an excellent video from Bowl of Lentils. And, yes, I hope I do get around to covering Popful Mail and Xanadu eventually, but there are so many other games I also want to cover.
My first contact with YS was on my old MSX2 computer. Awesome game
It was cool to see this version included with Ys VI, this was actually how I played through it for the first time. I decided to try everything after this; the SNES version was yucky but I think in spirit and execution the Genesis version came closest to this one out of all of them.
That Genesis soundtrack ripped hard
Great channel! This is one retro system that is barely spoken about for sure !
I remember seeing Ys3 for SNES in Blockbuster as a 90s kid, but I never actually got into this series until emulating the TurboGrafX versions, when I pretty quickly went through the first 3 and really enjoyed them. Now I've played every main entry except Ys5, and actually watched this video while I'm going through Ys8 for the first time. I own the Steam releases of nearly everything Ys (I haven't bought 9 yet, because I wanted to finish 8 first) although I also mail ordered Ys1 and 2 Complete and Oath in Felghana from Falcom back in the day. Still really impressed that they would mail from Japan to the US, when most places in Japan still won't do that! I kinda wish I'd gone to see any of their events when I was living in Japan, but it sounds like I left the country before they did a lot of bigger ones (I was there from 2010-2017).
I think they were just proud they could do parallax at all on the PC-88 heh. It certainly is tricky doing software-scrolling or tilemap refresh engines, most of the time the basic color depth limit of the tilemap prevents 4, 2, or 1 pixel shifting.
13:00 If you ever do merchandise that would be good on a T-shirt "Only Adol can bring back the town's BGM.".😁
Overall I like the side scrolling approach, while the top down view can convey more acreage of space seen, only the side view can convey just how tall one building or mountain is from another.
This happens to be my third time watching the video again fellas. Was really fantastic and had supper seeing it. 8^)
Anthony..
One of the coolest manuals I've ever seen for a video game! I can't think of any others that include sheet music for the game - what a nice touch.
I remember getting the Oath in Felghana collector's edition on a whim for the PSP since it was like $20 at a gamestop. Still my favorite PSP game and one of my all-time favorite games alongside Ys Origin.
Hardcore. I played Ys 3 when it came out on MSX, then on PC Engine. Great times.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Really cool seeing everything that came in the box as well as the different start options hidden in the manual. Thanks for making this and I look forward to checking out some other videos in the future!
I played through Ys 1 and 2 on the turbografx mini for the first time this year and had a pretty great time with it! I plan on playing through the turbocd version of Ys 3 soon. It's a shame that it's not on the turbografx mini. I wonder if Falcom will ever try to make a side scrolling Ys game ever again.
Sadly the choppy scrolling makes the Turbo version a bit tough to play nowadays.
Yeah, you have the soundtrack, but the scrolling. Still doesn't ruin it enough to make it not worth playing through though.
so we got new switch port... i am here for this amazing video again
Your videos have inspired me to play this series. Thanks.
That box art is magnificent
OMG please do a video on Emerald Dragon. That game is pure PC-88 gold. It’s a shame that the only English patch is for the SNES version.
Also one of the system's most important JRPGs without question.
I do agree that Wanderers of Ys still deserves to be played today! I don't think it's the best but it's still a fun classic.
I love the bounciness of the Trading town of Redmont theme in this version.
I discovered this game after playing Oath of Felghana and the other titles.
I played through the Turbografx version on emulator.
The nice thing about Wanderers is that it's short. Easily completable in an afternoon.
Oath of Felghana has some great voice work for the most part though. The english actor for Dogi is the guy who did Dracula for symphony of the night, Jiren in Dragon Ball Super, and Dio in Jojo's bizarre adventure! That guy is a legend. Dogi became one of my favorite side characters in Ys just from his performance!
It also has some insanely difficult bosses. Of all the middle "Ark era" of Ys games, it's the most complete RPG.
That quote on the box of all versions of this game is actually taken from the Billy Joel/Ray Charles duet Baby Grand "In my time I've wanted everywhere around this world. She would always be there."
All the cool presentation for the standard box when all of that would be like the extra special preorder deluxe edition these days... and you get a physical copy of the game too!
So happy to see Ys 3 getting some love. I absolutely love this game.
you deserve way more views ... i've been binge watching your stuff man
Very awesome episode, really enjoyed it!!! Yay PC-88!!!!
I've been playing Ys games since about 2005, and it's taken me until about 2 months ago to realise it's called "Wanderers From Ys" because the previous game takes place in Ys...
I was so happy when I got Ys3 for my snes I didn’t kno it sucked or so people thought till later I just knew me and my brother stayed up late a lot to beat it and I loved it. Honestly back then we called it Whys so I was pretty dumb back then but I had no way to know
Thanks for the videos you do here!!!
I have this on Genesis. Funny thing is I actually played Oath In Felgana first and then played this not knowing that Oath was a remake of it. Coming to that realization that it was the original version made the experience more enjoyable. Though, oddly enough, my favorite thing about this game is what happened because of it. If I recall correctly this originally wasn't supposed to be an YS game and was changed to one last minute which greatly angered the development staff to the point that they quit. Half of them ended up a forming different company: Quintet, and the rest went to go work at Game Arts. So not only did we get this amazing game but directly because of it we got games like Actraiser, Illusion of Gaia, Lunar and Grandia. For us gamers at the time win-win-win!
Came by recommendation of a good friend of mine.
Despite me not being a big JRPG fan, I was not disapointed
After hearing many versions of the Ys 3 soundtrack I'm amazed at how good this first version sounds even with such limited hardware
I must to play Ys series someday, even if i feel confused by amounts of version of older ones. It seems interesting games for me. And i have to admit that those PC-88 games had really impressive releasings with this boxes, colorful manuals and other stuff.
I finally played Wanderers from Ys earlier this year (the TurboGrafx-CD version for the sake of convenience and to experience that version of the soundtrack). I'd played Oath in Felghana when it first came out in English and loved it but had never gone back to try the original. I was struck by how much its reputation as a "black sheep" in the franchise felt unearned and how much Oath is extremely faithful in most ways, that setpieces and layouts are identifiable as the same even though the perspective changed. I don't think I'd have wanted every Ys game to be like Wanderers from Ys, but I love the game that it is.
The curious mix of platformer, action and RPG that gained purchase on Japanese PCs and consoles in this era with games like this, Exile, Zelda 2, Golvellius, heck even the NES port of Rygar, are fascinating to me. They all have a slightly different take on how to meld side scrolling platformer, RPG and Action but all clearly having identifiably common ideas about how. Even among Falcom's own catalog it could be argued that Romancia and Xanadu are experimenting in the same directions. I'm sure that's nowhere near an exhaustive list, and it could be fairly argued that the Castlevania games from SotN to GBA and DS were kind of the evolutionary endpoint of that formula in a lot of ways. I'd like to see more attempts to take some of these same ideas in a modern game, it feels like it would make a good indie game idea.
Thanks as always for a cool video! I've only played the PSP version of this and thought there were a lot of odd design choices in it, but wasn't familiar with gaming history to explain why it was the way it was. Awesome to see the original!
I must say the PC-88 handles multiple disk swapping much better than any Amiga game I've ever played, but then again it's probably easier when programmers could assume the system would come with two floppy drives by default
EGG Console just announced this version for the Switch. This channel is convinced me to pick up more than a few of those. Do you have any of the Hydlide games?
Loving your reviews. I've only played Y's III on the Super Nintendo.
I loved Ys III, and I wish the series kept the side-scrolling
love your videos man
I love the part of mega man 8 flame sword reference lmao 😂
Cool to see the PC-88 version played, i just played through the new re translated megadrive version enjoyed it. Great video i am a big fan of the Ys games only got a few to completed and i have done them all, might do Oath in Felgahna next.
The FC version is the most punishing as far as needing to level up a bunch in the mines. Genesis version is the smoothest playing but the TG-CD version is the most comprehensive, and the real music really enhances the vibe.
Great video! I loved Ys III. Great soundtrack. I own it on 7 platforms if you include Oath in Felghana. I enjoyed the PS2 version from Taito. Beautiful graphics but super easy.
I was gonna upvote anyway, but I had to immediately due to the Benny Hill segment. Well played.
I've only played Oath in Felghana, but after watching this video, I think I'll try out Wandere's from Ys on either Genesis or Turbografix. Feels like I owe it to myself as a fan
Edward Grimley spliced into an Ys 3 video - this channel rules.
I was fascinated by this game based on its Nintendo Power writeup, but have still yet to actually play it.
Until this year, Y's 3 was the only Y's game I finished! (SNES version) I've played through it a few times and love it!
I have play the oath of Felghana since I never had the chance of playing Wonders of Ys
"Wonderers from Whys" - me as a kid. Also me as a kid, "Seesil from FFII"
I completed Zeliard, looking at this just makes me shiver.
Why? Zeliard is super long, but Ys 3 is super short and easy. It can be completed in a few hours.
0:45 - I'm in agreement. Ys 3 is my favorite.
Of course, this may just be nostalgia talking, since it was the only one I played as a child, until emulation and fan-translations gave me access to the others.
@BasementBrothers Hey, I don't know if you already know this, but the online shop Nintendo Switch they have the PC88 versions of both Y's 1 and 2 on there! They cost $6.49 each! Also, I love your channel. Keep up the great work!
This version of Ys 3 is coming out on Switch next week, too!
Some of the tracks would sound boss as metal covers
Oh yeah, there are definitely some metal covers of Valestine Castle out there on youtube if you look. jdk Band also did some pretty metal versions of some of these tunes too.
I always used the invincibility code on the SNES because it was so hard and I didn’t understand the need to grind.
Great video! This is one of the few remaining Ys games I have yet to play.
Are you planning to cover the Ys IV releases, or no because they were not PC games?
Oh cool I didn't know Ys 3 also had it's beginnings on pc 88. Very cool. And I was one of those people back then who played the snes version and just gave up on it because I kept getting killed on the first screen lol. I got too much engrossed in oath of felghana at the time to even give Wanderers from Ys a try. I regret it because I like this name now. It's honestly just an ok sidescroller game with Adol in it to me though lol. The game is still really fun though. I really need to play the genesis version next it looks really good.
Ys 3 is better than Zelda 2
I love it so much
It's like a JOKE how great it is. It's so strange...
@@BasementBrothers 😄
Ys 7 is easily my favorite, but I prefer the visual style of these classics.
Crazy to think this was the game that nearly killed Falcom as a company, there was definitely a lot of love put into it. While I DO understand why fans at the time hated it, I enjoyed it like I enjoy every other Ys game. But then I also enjoyed Zelda II so...
Fans in Japan generally liked it, from what I've read across older Japanese fansites (at least the Japanese PC-focused ones). The console ports retroactively soiled players' perception of the game by gradually deviating from the original version's polish and intended experience IMO.
when i got ys 1 and 2 with the turboduo in the 90s i could not figure out how to attack with my sword and thought the controller was broken. i spent hours running around avoiding getting hit then put the game away for years and thought it was the hardest game ever. then i saw on the internet how to attack in like 2008. i found ys 3 on snes used and played though it because it had an attack button so then i bought the cd version.
this video make me wanted to play the pc engine version instead of oath in felghana, boy Im glad I did that, I loved this game to death, I wonder why people allways say is a bad game.... the enemy AI is very easy to figure out so is just practice (and maybe a little of leveling up in the begining like you said)
People call Ys 3 a bad game?! They're nuts!
@@BasementBrothers omg I got noticed hahaha love your content ewe
@@BasementBrothers hey so I played the sega genesis version, and I hated it lol, its to grindy, and the hitboxes are norisable worst, maybe because all enemies are way to fast. so my new theory is, if people say is a bad game maybe they played the genesis version
OK, a few days ago I spent about an hour or so getting my ass kicked by the final boss in the Turbografx version before I finally squeezed out a win. Now I hear that that's the easy version of him? Oh dear, clearly I wasn't very good at this game.
Software based three layer scrolling on an 8 bit computer that has no hardware scrolling of any sort is damn impressive regardless of how choppy it is.
Is the PC 88 hardware tile based? If it is I doubt there is much that could be done to make the scrolling smoother as you have to use animated tiles to make software based multi layer scrolling and adding a third layer increases the memory and processing power that eats up by at least 50%. Probably why the PC Engine version is so choppy as well, they probably could have made it smoother by dropping one layer and freeing up more memory and CPU time.
That 640x200 resolution mode actually existed on MSDOS PCs in EGA, I remember that Sierra Online used it with their port of Sorcerian. Only time I ever saw it used anywhere in an MSDOS PC application. On genuine EGA hardware it technicly had 16 colors from a pallet of 64 however you needed to either use composite video or an analog RGB monitor that almost nobody actually had so EGA was almost always used in fixed 16 color mode. IIRC Sierra's port of Sorcerian was designed to use the EGA mode on a VGA card and so had the full 64 available colors.
EDIT: VGA also supported a 640x400 mode which makes me wonder why the MSDOS PC version of Rusty didn't use it. Could be that some monitors or cards didn't support it properly.
A point can always be made about playing Wanderers From Ys, it is really a unique experience in the series.
Same can't be said about Ys IV, unfortunately, where they outsourced the game and we got two derivative, conflicting games, each with its own share of problems. These days they're only worth playing if you're really curious, otherwise you're better off just playing the remake.
Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (the PCE one) is amazing in my opinion! Loved what Hudson did with it.
@@BasementBrothers Its a pretty good game, yes, but also very derivative (its really more of a retread of Ys I and II than its own thing) and the story makes absolutely no sense. The cutscenes are amazing tho.
I just played through the Genesis version and I enjoyed my time with it. I think the final boss is absolutely brutal.
I mean you have to jump just the right height to hit the boss without getting hit yourself and the floor is also shaking making your jumps uneven.
I was looking for recomandations to beat the fight when I saw the SNES version. That final boss looks so much easier. The foreground doesn't dissrupt your view.
I understand the concept of making sure your final boss is a challenge but if you barely scratch the guy while max level with the strongest weapon in the game I have to call BS.
I prefer to set my own level of challenge. Just let me outlevel the enemy if I want to. Setting 12 as max level is a joke.
I did have fun with this game even if the final boss was more difficult than I would have liked. I can completely understand how everyone recomands to just play Oath of Felgana instead.
Same story set in a game engine that is also used in other games of the series. I don't hate Ys 3. I actually think the bosses were great. Compared to Ys 5 where every boss just needed to be hit quickly. Kinda wish we could get the PS2 remake on steam but no. Ys 5 is still japan exclusive if you try to go through official channels.
Oh, don't write off the SNES final boss. It is just as difficult, but in its completely own way. The only easy console version is the TurboGrafx.
Did Terraria take inspiration from this game's character sprite and attack animations? I haven't seen enough other Japanese pixel side-scrollers to compare, but the ones in this game really do look similar to Terraria's.
I love Ys 3 because I don't care how iconic or whatever it is, the Bump System of Ys 1 and 2 was terrible and I hate its guts. Also cuz its music is kickin' rad (I had the SNES version and later Oath in Felghana, the latter of which has the best remixes of Winged Boy and Valestine Castle ever).
I don't get anyone who says Y's 3 is bad, the original game is bad ass. The more modern remake is a total step down on the other hand.
I learned recently via a speedrun that the Genesis version apparently has a glitch you can take advantage of to max out your level and gold near-instantly.
ua-cam.com/video/0iXNj76qnqk/v-deo.html (See the comments below the video where I ask some questions and get some detailed answers)
My question is, does this same glitch work in other versions?
Noice
The PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 version has bumpy scrolling because its Video Display Processor does not support 2 background layers, it has only one.
Yes but later games were able to get around that limitation.
@@BasementBrothers those multi scrolling games used techniques like interrupt based line scrolling, clever use of sprites and background animation (which is kind of what's being used here), but I believe all that would not be enough to make the scrolling smooth on this one as Ys 3's background contains many transparent sections all over the layers and they scroll up and down.
If the game had been released a bit later as a Super CD, rather than a regular CD-ROM², the extra memory likely would've helped with this. Still though, it would've been nice to see a better end result on the console. Same with Ninja Gaiden.
@@BasementBrothers I don't think being on CD-ROM2 memory would've been enough as it it's more of a CPU speed or hardware capability issue. Even later games on CD-ROM2 that contain parallax scrolling don't contain such large sections of overlapping layers. Games like Gates of Thunder and Castlevania Rondo of blood use sprites in order to draw the overlapping sections of the layers. Sections that won't overlap and scroll horizontally at different speeds can be easily done through line interrupt scrolling. GoT, Star Parodier, Parodius and Gradius II use background tile animation, but that will only work for large repeating patterns. What later games are you thinking about? I might be missing something here :)
Unfortunately, it's simpler than that. Ys 3 just uses a very bad form of tile mapping (tile animation), similar to Ninga Gaiden. Many games used tile mapping to great effect, even for large sections of background. Some games like Genpei Toumaden or Bravoman even went so far as to use giant sprites to animate the whole foreground layer. Ys 3 could have done better.
Wait, the opening says it's been 8 years since Ys I and II. But when you beat Ys III on hard mode it says he was 19? So Adol was only 11 years old in the first two games? Not sure that fits, lol. Never really been sure about how the canon of the Ys games work though.
Good video
The remake probably the way to go for me
But this engine really dont work well with some pc like ys 6 the frame pacing is terrible
I need to run unlock frame to get better framepace
Took them quite a while to ditch the seperate setting launcher
And also i agreed with your tokyo xanadu with most things
The story is pretty boring for me and the combat can better with more combo connecting i wish they experiment new things with tokyo
Look forward for your kuro 2 mini review
Personally I think that this game to be very flawed. It's very mindless, and most enemies and even bosses could be defeated with basic positioning. The only boss that forced me to figure a real strategy was the boss that you fight when returning to the mines, but I also found that boss to be one of the most annoying bosses in the game. I played the PC Engine version of the game, and the scrolling to be headache inducing. At least the graphics, story, and audio (not count the voice acting) is great! But this game could have been a lot better. If some notes were taken from Zelda II or Falcom's own Faxanadu then we could have gotten a much better game. Thankfully the reimagining of this game in Oath of Falgona was great, and ties in to the overall world building of Ys a lot better as well.
Valid criticisms. Personally, I love it. Some of the same arguments could be made to some extent about even the modern Ys games. They're generally pretty easy to power through just by levelling without using much strategy... at least at the normal difficulty. Personally, with Ys 3 I find levelling so satisfying that it's still fun to watch the bosses go down even if it doesn't require much strategy.
Faxanadu is a Hudson Soft game, albeit based on Falcom's original Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu to some extent.
You think it's for decoration? You're probably right. I always wondered why random bits of english pops up in Japanese games. I figured it's because every game made back then has the hopes of traveling west, so any text that would be especially hard to re-program the code for english, they just put that text up in english to spare them the effort later on, if they get lucky. Or it could be like an advertisement for english publishers to show them what their games look like in english. Or maybe it's just educational. Teach kids a little english. Yeah, why knows? Decoration, probably. Maybe english characters just have a stronger presence in some cases. Another one that always bugged me was the Sega Mark 1. So much technology gets called "Mark 1." Why is this Mark guy anyway? Or is it like "marking your territory"? Boggles the mind.
In the case of the original Ys 3 though, it was for the PC-88. A system that wasn't available outside Japan and never would be. If the text needs to be reprogrammed for English, then that can always be done simultaneously with the console port. No, in this case it is ornamental. Even in Falcom's modern games like the Trails series, English text is still used quite liberally as ornamentation. It gives the world a more European feel.
Please, can you tell me what that cartoon at 23:23 is, I have been trying to find its name for ages. I used to watch it on Cartoon Network at night.
The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley
Just out of curiosity, does a CRT monitor affect how this looks? It looks very very pixelated in your video and I wonder if that is due to the capture device, and playback on an LCD. I notice this on all your PC-88 videos and while they look amazing i wonder if the use of a CRT would make things look a bit more natural.
This is about as clean an output you can possibly get on a real PC-88. CRT affects it how you would expect: less sharpness so the pixely look would be a little softer.
@@BasementBrothers thanks for the quick reply. The ultra sharpness is just a bit headache inducing. I love your videos either way man. It makes me feel like I'm getting to experience a side of the gaming industry I never knew existed as a kid and I grew up during the late 80s/90s when these things were in their prime. I feel like had I been able to play on these I would have been far more into PCs than consoles.
Here's what I always say: A lot of the differences attributed to "console vs. PC games" back then were actually the differences between "Japanese vs. Western games". Thanks for watching!
@@BasementBrothers I agree with that statement entirely but I think more what I was getting at is that the west didn't have easy access to these Japanese computers like NEC PC-88/98 lines, Sharp X series and even the MSX. When we did get ports to pc of Japanese games they were awful like the Megaman trilogy for DOS.
This game isn't as good as the previous Ys games but still plenty of fun in it's own right. The voice acting for the Turbografx CD version is legendarily bad. Having played the Megadrive and Snes versions of this as well I have to say the Snes version has some pretty wonky colission detection and doesn't feel quite right as a result.
This was one of my most favorite games for the Genesis when I was a kid
If you had a Turbo CPU mod (5-8 MHz) for the MSX, that would make the game much more playable, albeit it did affect the FM music.
