Reflecting on how Martha's Vineyard became 'Jaws' territory

On the coast of Massachusetts, beaches have what seems to be a near-constant inhabitance of sunbathers and swimmers in the warmer months. That is, until one film instilled mass fear within beachgoers over what could lie in the open ocean.
After its release in the summer of 1975, Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" changed the brain chemistry of many swimmers, especially those on Martha's Vineyard. Used as the set for the film the summer prior, the Vineyard was no longer only a picturesque summer escape - it was now "Jaws" territory.
Creating a cult following, the film was immediately successful and held the title of highest-grossing film ever until George Lucas' "Star Wars" was released in 1977. As each summer passes, the love for "Jaws" continues to grow on a local, national, and international scale.
