Here's my argument to UA-cam and most platforms - Lets say 1000 people 'subscribe' to your channel, that means they have signed up to see your content. Every video you post should go out to those 1000 people, and if they decide they don't like your content anymore then they can choose to unsubscribe.
But that is not the system, and our videos do not get pushed out to all our subscribers - only a small percentage.
I do not experience this myself, I always get shown every video from each subscription in my list.
Videos will get get pushed to everyone if people use the subscriptions page, but most people dont use that pagey. They use the home page where YT is trying to expose other content instead of just what a person has subscribed to. The only downside of just using the subscriptions page... is that you don't get exposed to other things you might like. Which ultimately is bad for creators who are trying to grow their audience since they wont get any exposure to new eyeballs if everyone uses the subscription page.
What would be nice is if UA-cam gave users a slider where they could set the ratio between who I've subbed and who I might also like. The home page for me is usually around 60% people I don't subscribe to and only 40% who I am subscribed to. Personally I'd prefer it to be like 80% subscriptions / 20% recommendations.

@@q5sys Ahh I see what you mean. I treat them as completely separate pages. Subscription page for the videos I know I'll most likely want to watch, then home page for when I've run out of interesting subscription videos and I want a little extra something.
@@JamesClark1991 I don't think that's the case anymore... if you subbed to 100 different channels and you watched like 5 of them recently, your front/home page only has those and random channels that YT decides to pick for you that are similar now... out of the top 10 videos on my front/home page, I would say 3-4 are videos I subbed/relevant, but 6-7 are randoms with similar genre/topics that I never seen before... I don't know why UA-cam is doing this, because I don't like it... it's been happening for the last few months... If I don't watch or remember the channel name, I have to go search for it and that in itself is a huge hassle (I have at least 1K subs from like 2008), because your Subscriptions page is a huge mess, super unorganized/sort feature is broken, and hate the UI layout (YT probably did that on purpose)...
Confession: I am not a photographer. Not even close. It used to be a hobby a long time ago, and I'm still fascinated by it. But I don't watch your channel because of photography. I watch every video you release because I enjoy watching your stuff. The way you present, your personal style, the things that interest you, it all resonates with me for some reason.
With that said, this video was really fascinating, even just thinking about how it all works as a UA-cam consumer and not a creator.

12:48 I have the same dilemma. I make adventure videos, action sports videos, and short films/skits. My channel is growing really slowly and I keep thinking maybe I should have created different channels for the categories of videos that I make. I often wonder if I am having trouble growing because of the different variety of videos on my channel or if it's just me lol.
As a creator with only 33k subscribers, it's amazing to me to hear that you have the same frustrations and doubts created by the analytics as I do, Peter. Thank you for being honest, open and down to earth in this discussion!

The way I find best to improve as a creator is take one aspect in each edit and try to work on making it the best you can … overtime you learn all the varied skills and it can come together in a film … Loved this one Pete ❤🎉

Not sure if there is even a solution other than being a super consistent, persistent and resilient creator. Can I just say though I really wish I started creating content sooner. Because now, in order to make money, you have to meet certain criteria it is so much harder to meet that criteria now.

The UA-cam game is not for the faint of heart! If I get too deep in the analytics it can become very demoralizing. Biggest thing to remember is that PEOPLE watch videos, not NUMBERS. Connecting with our audiences is one of the greatest powers we have on this platform. Make it count 🙌🏼.

Back-in-the-day I worked hard to get to a point where I could monetize my channel. I was so excited and charged-up to be a UA-cam creator. THEN Google/UA-cam changed the monetization requirements to have a certain amount of subscribers and views to monitize, and DID NOT grandfather-in the people who already "made it." I got kicked out. It destroyed my momentum, enthusiasm, and drive to create videos for UA-cam.

That was so helpful, thank you. I am a relative newbie to UA-cam and some of the jargon goes straight over my head, but the way Rene explained it made total sense. I didn’t grow up with the Internet (ouch revealing my age 😅) maybe that’s why I am blissfully ignoring algorithms and co. It's super tiring to hear early or even seasoned creators complaining about the algorithm keeping them down. UA-cam wants nothing more than for your next video to be a banger so that it can show thousands of people more ads. If your promise (6:30) isn't exciting, and/or your delivery on that promise is weak, then UA-cam has plenty of other options that they know are working to surface to that viewer instead. One of the best skills UA-camrs have is resilience - to be able to see that 10/10, embrace what it means, and have the self awareness that your video isn't objectively bad from an "artistic" perspective. But that it objectively isn't as strong as your last 10 offerings for the platform. And the fix for that is the passion and experimentation (16:25)

So much to unpack from this. I love it. I do agree that old content can blow up. I redid some videos of tutorials I made for streamlabs and my old ways still out perform the updated ones. My advice would be to only update old content if it's substantial enough. I'm definitely rewatching this a few times because my biggest thing is "try it on your main channel and if it doesn't perform then put it on a different channel" runs through my head a lot lol.

This is an amazing video -- so many questions answered. I think it still comes down to "Do something you're passionate about". For those of us who aren't pro's, but really want to put things out that matter to us -- the numbers aren't the driver. Continue to do what matters to you, especially if that's what brought you to this platform.
I'm as equally inspired by the small channels as I am with the huge channels like Pete's. I know what I'm going to get with Pete, which is why I'm a sub, yet with the smaller creators, I admire their passion too. Twenty five subs or 2500 subs, if you're making vids about something you love, that's what matters.

if it helps or matters to you Peter - considering everything he said - I found you because of my want to learn how to use my new to me camera better - you inspired, your approach to subject, composition and the image - subtle editing but low vibe on technical details to the extreme - I love you're into so many other things but I watch your videos where your photography is the subject - you present it well, you keep my attention and you make me want to be a better photographer because of how passionate you get about the subject and how to get it right
there, thats it - I stay subscribed and wait for your photography vids - keep inspiring those of us that may pic up a camera and find interest even if you might have moved way past the start of your photog career
This was very helpful and interesting to me. The way Rene explained the Audience tab and how this can help me actually made me look at it more closely. I have always looked at retention and click through, but the section on videos that is growing my audience was new to me. This was incredibly helpful and has given me new insights I did not have before.
I also realize that my shorts videos are generating nothing compared to my longer form videos and clearly I need to create a reason for short form viewers to enter my long form content. Thanks Peter for making a video like this. I originally started following you for all the super helpful tips you gave on video, photo and editing and I am still around with you venturing into new areas. Thank you for continuing to explore and learn new things and reminding the rest of us to do the same.

The data also doesn't tell the story; for example, I've watched a ton of your tutorial videos despite not being a photographer and having never messed with Lightroom or Photoshop. But I watched them because seeing someone be passionate and competent, and educational in a kind, inclusive way is what I've needed over the last few years. Rene is so smart to talk about that feeling, but it's so hard to understand where it's coming from based on analytics alone. Anyways, I appreciate you, the content creators who hold their humanity up to the statistics to bring us art that impacts us in ways you'll probably never realize.

As a creator I look for what is lacking. Technique, Skills, Inspiration, etc. In the case of Pete's videos while the aforemention information is invaluable, what really draws me to watch is another thing I lack, enthusiasm. Pete is always so enthusiastic and charismatic about his craft that it's like watching a kid in a candy store.

awesome video/interview. I think that is pone pf the challenges I find as a young channel on UA-cam is balancing thecontent I create between videos that will grow my audience vs. the content I am more passionate about. I try to keep it 50/50 but that isn't always the case.
