The best explanation of pruning Wisteria I have ever heard. I now have high hopes that mine will actually flower next year, just off to prune it now. Thank you!
I have wisteria growing in my walled garden, it’s a huge established plant that has obviously been here for years and years. I’ve never had one before so this video was so so helpful. Thank you Mark!
Brilliant video, I was gifted a couple of wisteria plants and going to place them on an entrance arch to my woodland garden, this video was super useful
I am extremely novice gardener if i can even give myself that title 😊 But that was a very clear and informative explanation having just baught a wisteria will be very useful going forward thank you Mark
This is my first time having Wisteria. She's about 10-15 years old but I only moved in last year. I pruned her WAAAAY back, down to sticks in January 2021 and she did bloom a bit, but not a lot.... then she got really bushy and green (she's on an arbor trellis, lovely) but I didn't know to prune back in August or after the bloom until I watched your video! So her leaves all fell off in January and just now got around to pruning. But what I read last year was to cut waaaay back to the woody sticks... and I did that once again. There were pods or what looked like blooms but I cut all that back ... as I didn't prune in August. I will have to set up a reminder to prune back after blooming this year (hopefully, I didn't cut that short and won't have any blooms!- think maybe that happened last year - pruned to much in Winter ... and this year pruning on first day of Spring where there 'WERE' buds .... Ahhh ... well, live and learn. Thanks so much for your video, very helpful!! Will prune twice this upcoming year, and not back to the hard wood, lol!! :)
I hope if you follow these instructions you will more and more blossom each year. 5 buds after flowering, 2 buds late winter. Thanks for watching and for commenting. Good luck with your wisteria 🙂
Wow I'm Thank you for such an informative and friendly video.... Actually the best information I've heard so far and I've had my Wisteria for 4/5 years now, East Coast, South Africa, and wondering why no flowers yet but now I understand the plant so much better.... All I knew was that it is a vigorous grower(obviously in the right climate) as my Nursery man wanted to know why I want a plant that doesn't normally flourish here I'm renting so put it in a tall pot which keeps falling over!!
Brilliant story. Thank you. I have seen them in large pots. You can feed, mulch and replace bits of soil occasionally. Thank you so much for your comment and for warching 😊mark
I've actually realized my Wisteria is much older, having bought it the year after my husband's death in 2015, so that makes it 7 yrs old now... I've now pruned it according to your good instructions... Thank you so much
Thanks Mark, my baby Norfolk outgrew its pot (I've had as my real indoor Christmas tree all the years) and set it free to grow naturally on my brother's farm, so I plan to transplant the Wisteria from the tall narrow pot into the big round pot (from the Norfolk)... Will add the new putting soil and mulch, while I keep watching and listening to your videos...
Thank you so much for this presentation. I am living in North America and love to grow Wisteria. Looking for such presentation. This year I have double bloom. Once in May and end of July. My vines are only four years old. I was not sure when to prune, but your advice is very helpful and timely. Love to enjoy the beautiful Wisteria!
Very informative 😊 my wisteria is 2 years and i never got to see it blossom but thanks to you, will follow your advice and patiently wait for it to blossom ❤❤❤
"knowing how a wisteria/glycine behaves..." SO TRUE because(ours we planted over 20 years ago here at our old farm in Normandy,) they're really ALIVE, almost like an animal. Thank you, Mark. I'm going to prune my wisteria for the first time tomorrow (1st August). I planted it in early 2021 and it has not blossomed yet. I'm hoping that, following your advice, I'll see some flowers next spring.
Many thanks for the insights from a "Yank" in Northern New York, growing a flourishing, but so far non-flowering, wisteria at the Northern edge of its range.
You have maintained your wisteria very nicely and the flowers are so appealing. Today I also order for the plant seeds and wish someday I will also have a wisteria plant like yours. Thanks for the video.
FANTASTIC Video, Mark! Thank you! I have a 2 year old vine that I am training into a wisteria tree. It is JUUUUUST starting to become a little thuggish and I wanted to be sure I was pruning it correctly. I appreciate this video and as your newest subscriber I look forward to exploring more of the videos you have to offer.
My grandfather planted a wisteria in his garden in 1963. It yet lives and has become a large and heavy plant, too heavy for the structure it sits on. A couple years without maintenance after my grandparents passed have also made it complicated too prune, the tendrils have wrapped around eachother and become a nest of thick branches. But even then (and to this day) it does produces a glorious waterfall of blooms.
Awesome video! I just planted my gifted 5 feet wisteria yesterday (in Central Texas and already has blossoms). I have been looking for videos with info on the planting and care/maintenance and this one is the most explanatory. Thanks for the help! Your house looks amazing! 💐😃
Mine flowered for thr firdt time this year after 5 years. Only 2 flowers but ive given it a huge hack back and hoping itll put on a big display next spring now.
My wisteria is growing on a north-east facing wall which is not ideal but it's started becoming thuggish now so this video has been brilliant for explaining wisteria care. I'll try to remember five leaf sets in late summer and two buds in May. Nice and simple...a big thank you!
Hi Mark..your Wisteria is looking great against your cottage👍I have several planted in my garden plus one against the house,I’ve kept them pruned under control and they flower beautifully each season..start of Autumn here in NZ so will be several months before I get to enjoy the blooms and perfume again but we’ll worth the wait..thanks for your tips, enjoy your videos, cheers
I find it quite fascinating that other countries are going into autumn as we head into spring. I've actually moved house since so i don't have that wisteria now. I'll be growing one over an arbor though.
Thank you Mark. Just what I needed to hear. Mine might be 2 or 3. I try to plant one each time I move to a new place. I've gone back to those places and they are still there.
Thank you for that clear and informative video. Can you give me some advice on how to train a young wisteria to grow up over my pergola? How do I know which runners to keep, and how many, for future long branches? How do i define that structural "shape" in the best way?
Thank you Mark for this wonderful video!!! This was so easy to follow and very clear! This was the first year my wisteria has bloomed after 5 years! It is so whimsical and enchanting. Definitely my favourite plant 💜 I look forward to more videos! Cheers from Toronto!
Thank u 🙏🏼 very informative and good information, now I will go out and cut my wisteria, had no flower in r years sense I get it intro my garden here I Sweden Stockholm archipelago, it grows up on a tree who is what I want to be the place for it to grow on… 😊 it is a red Barry tree and it had not much of green leaves or vegetation from the bottom to the top around r meter so it would be nice to have this wisteria hanging in this tree over a nice place to sit under.. I just waiting sooo long time now for the flower 😅 and now I understand how I can cut it and form it as a want and hopefully get some flower next spring, now it is august so it s a good time as u say in the video 😊 thank u.
Dear Mark, Thank you for this very helpful video! My wisteria is two years old. First year it didn't even grow. Second year I made a pergola and it set off. Just one flower though. Next year I bet it will totally get out of hand 😊 Hopefully it will bloom likewise, but thanks for the warning it can take a while. Maybe I will also have to put rings and ropes/ties to the wall. I'm looking forward to it already.
I heard a saying. Year 1 they sleep, year 2 they creep, year 3 they LEAP!! Please let me know how you get on 😊 amd thanks for watching and commenting. Mark
Mark this an excellent video regarding wisteria pruning. I have a question regarding Wisteria species 'sinensis' and 'floribunda'; do their tendrils spiral in opposite directions, and if so, which is clockwise and which counter-clockwise. This question is asked for identification and training purposes. Thanks.
Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Regards the tendrils. That's an interesting point and I must confess I don't know the answer. I'm away the next week. I'll have a look into it when I get back. Mark
Lovely house Mark and what a wisteria, I have an Alba one on a pergola swinging chair which I made, I pruned for the first time back to three last winter and what a display of flowers. The years I didn't prune I was having a display of 2 to 3 very small flowers. I'll take your advice on a summer winter prune and see how it goes. Keep up the videos very inspiring!!
Hi Robert. Thanks for both your comments, this and thr tree fern comment. I really appreciate them. Thd pruning method i used for the wisteria was after lots of research and seems to be widely accepted, but having said that, my new neighbour has one and has done no pruning whatsoever, although i should add that his is in the perfect south facing sheltered condition. I've since moved house and will be planting a new wisteria over an arbor with some jasmine and honeysuckle. Best wishes. Mark
We planted 2 wisteria plants, one on either side of our gazebo. We planted over 15 years ago! Never have we had ANY blooms?!? I think maybe we planted on the wrong side, they are on the north side so maybe not getting enough sun? Any ideas would be helpful! I will now start pruning as in your excellent video! Thank you so much!
I think maybe just keep waiting, try this pruning method and if possible train some of the longer branches into the sunniest spot if you can. Mine was north west facing and did ok.
Hi Mark, thanks for the amazing vdo. It really helped me a lot to understand how to maintain the Wisteria. I just bought my first 2 Wisteria's. They both are 60 cm tall and I'm not sure where to place them in the garden. shall I turn it into a tree as a center piece or shall I trail it along the front of the house where it's more likely to get some good sunshine?
Thank you Mark - a very good explanation. I'm guessing I've left it too late for the first cut back (as we are nearly Easter)?. Thanks, from Leicestershire x
Hi there. You could do an experiment possibly? Leave some and prune some then compare the results. I'd take a few down to 2 buds and see what happens 😊 thanks for watching. Mark
That's a good idea, thanks (we moved here last summer and I'm just observing the garden to see what comes up before I do anything but I know this needs a bit of attention!)@@MarksHouseandGardenUK
Love the video thank you so much also my wisteria is taking over my wooden trellis I would like to cut it back and let it grow on a metal Arbor is that possible? Can I do that this week? Now I know how to prune my wisteria.Thank you have a wonderful day.
Firstly. Thank you. And yes, I would go ahead and do it this week or soon. Possibly not all the way back. Just to between 5 or 7 buds. You can train anywhere really 😊
Thank you so much for a great explanation!! My parents are about to move from our childhood home and have a beautiful wisteria in their garden. It is possible to get some cuttings from it to start a new plant for their new garden? 😊
Hi, thank you for watching. I understand cuttings are difficult but you can try. You can also try collecting and planting seed pods although I believe it can be complex and take 15 years. I've heard the easiest way is to bury a few of the whips in soil whilst they are still growing. It's called laying i think(?) but if they are moving imminently this may not be feasible.
I have owned my wisteria tree for 2.5 years. I purchased it as a small bush ;approximately 12 -inches. I have it planted in the middle of my front yard. The tree is now 5 ft. I had -one bloom. I would simply love for it to bloom more… can I boost it with a flower boosting agent? The strange thing is about this tree is the tendrils appear as though they are grabbing me😅😅 I sometimes need to fight them off😅. Truly an aggressive tree.
Ha. I love your description of your tree! I hope you keep on top of it. Mine really started to fully blossom well after 4 or 5 years. If you follow the routine and are patient. You will be rewarded. 😊
🎉Thank you . I have a 25 year old wisteria over the peak of my portch 2 years ago it was wild and i had to get someone to cut back of of the slate roof. It was fine for after that blooming each year but last year it fell off its framed because it had so many blooms it was to heavy so i had to cut all the under side to get into my front door we had to houst it up and tie it around the beam . I keep the long shoots cut because i don't wat it to get as bad as it did befor . Sadly this year i didn't have any flowers but did on the wild bit going into the trees. I left lots of blooms on the top bit over the porch so i dont know why it hasnt flowerd this year. It was in may last year when i had to cut it. And this year im having to cut the long stems again because its touching the roof again. Can you suggest anything for me what im doing wrong. I realy need to cut it right back but afraid it will not flower again Thank you
Hi Mark. Really enjoy your video. Mine hasn't bloomed after 5 yrs. Should I apply your technique? It's August here in VA, USA. Can I do prune to 5 leaves now? Thank you.
Hi there. I'm not sure how your zones work. But if you prune to five late autumn then 2 early spring it should in theory work out the same. Thanks for watching. Mark
Brilliant, thank you! Very clear. May I ask you, what about feeding Wisteria? I have a plant that has not flowered for years even though I have tried both pruning and not pruning it... Somebody told me I must never feed Wisteria as they would just give leaves and no flowers if I do?
Thank you for this lovely informative video! We have a 40year old Wisteria in the garden of the house we just bought. It’s beautiful and huge. But it’s now August and it’s blooming again (new flowers coming in all over). It also has a LOT of tendrils now. It’s growing out of control. Do I prune it now and cut the tendrils? Or should I wait for this bloom to be over?
Hi. Thanks for this. I think it depends on your objectives. It might be wise to sacrifice some blooming potential this year just to bring the thing back under control. I suspect even if you don't follow the prescribed routine it will still give you some blossom somewhere. What is the main thing you want to achieve? Mark
I would like to your explain that wisteria ( Glicine ) Pruning . I have a small plant which is growing purple colour flowers seeds . But there isint any flowers yet. It's old is one year. Thank you very much my dear .
That is quite young. Sometimes they can take several years. I would say be patient and wait another couple of seasons. Leave the pruning for a couple of years until the overall size is bigger. Good luck and best wishes. Mark
Very helpful. Does anyone know anything about fertilizing wisteria? I'm not sure how old mine is but we've been here over two years and it hasn''t bloomed at all.
Thanks drew. I haven't ever added anything to my wisteria. However, those borders (and other borders) at the front have been where i occasionally scattered the ashes from my wood burning stove, and i believe that has a beneficial effect. Thanks again. Mark
Hello! Thank you so much for this. My wisteria just dropped the last few flowers, and now there are long naked green stems where the flowers used to be. Do i cut these off? I’m assuming these are not the tendrils you’re talking about? Thank you again, love your house and wisteria!
Hi. I would leave those in place, UNLESS you want to control the wisteria by pruning the shape. Ultimately, you can prune anything at any time, but for maximum blossom follow the regime I outlined. Best wishes. Mark
Hi, it is about 9:00 p.m. in Idaho USA. I have a blue moon wisteria actually six of them that I'm training to go up my pergola. They bloomed this spring but they're still young plants. My question about pruning them. You mentioned to cut them back to five leaves. However, this plant has seven leaves on the stem, so I'm not quite sure how bushy to keep it or how low to cut it. Please advise. Thank you
I’m not sure how many branches I should let grow off my main branch. Should I just get rid off the smaller weaker looking ones and let grow the stronger looking ones? How far apart do you think? Thank you! Kym.
I have planted wisteria 3 years ago and the branches are about 3-4 feet around the tree. Can I prune the leaves around so I can see the main tree? Thanks for this very informative about pruning wisteria 👍👍
Hi. If your main objective is to see the trunk then it is ok to prune back. But important to realise that pruning may reduce flowers. A good balance of growth and pruning, don't take too much away because you may weaken the plant. Best wishes. Mark
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK the trunk is full of leaves like it just started to grow but it’s all in the bottom of the trunk like about 2-3’ from the root going up, it’s full of leaves, so it’s ok to cut those leaves so I can see the trunk but how far or high should I prune or remove those branches of leaves? Thank you again for this excellent video, 👍👩🌾
Only just planted my wisteria on the outside of my house on a wire trelis (Wisteria sinensis Caroline) so got a good few years before I see any blooms but can already see rapid growth. How do you feed your wisteria to keep it healthy?
@MarksHouseandGardenUK I had to severely chop back a lot of our very established wisteria when we bought our house as it got out of hand. After spacing the branches better, it’s now shot out multiple leaf shoots from singular points, and they’re all brown leaves. Do I leave these multiple shoots until late winter? Any ideas on the brown leaves? It was quite the renovation!
i wonder if the brown leaves are shock? keep it watered, after such an upheaval it is probably stressed. give it nice care and I am sure it will come back, yes, i'd wait before doing any further pruning. best wishes. mark
Hi, I turned 4 Wisteria vines into trees. 2 purple and 2 white. They have been planted for about 16 years now. This year my trees have blossomed 5 different times after a frost killed my first set of just blooms and no foliage. This has never happened before. I also have had an abundance of "Tendrils" that just won't stop producing. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for this! My wisteria is forever producing tendrils right up until leaf drop and I find I have to constantly cut them back to manage its size. Does cutting back in September do any harm?
The advice in your video is really clear and very informative. However, you don’t make any mention of the bean like pods that develop each year on my plant. Can you advise how I should deal with these or is it the case that if I summer prune early enough they won’t develop ?
Hi thanks fpr this. The bean like pods are indeed seed pods. And in fact can be germinated and grown on. But it can take 15 years to produce a plant (layering/pinning a vine into soil is suggested as the best way to propagate). Regarding the pods, i just leave them on, they don't seem to have a detrimental effect on blossom. And my hope is that will provide food for an animal at some point. Thanks for your comment and watching. Are you UK based?
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thank you for your prompt response which is much appreciated and very helpful. I am in North East Derbyshire and the wisteria is growing on a pergola in a very sheltered south facing garden. The great thing for me about the foliage is it provides wonderful shade through the hottest part of the summer.
@@janbrown7431 sounds wonderful, we are Nantwich in cheshire. The wisteria you see in my video is at my previous house. I moved to Rose Cottage in December, i am also going to have a new wisteria on a pergola, i miss it!
I also planted a wisteria 14 years ago. It's flowered beautifully most years, but this year no flowers yet? The leaves are appearing, so hoping it's just a bit late? We've had a very dry April, and it's in a sheltered corner spot. I've always loved wisteria, wish the flowers lasted longer! Your wisteria is beautiful. Do you feed yours?
The most clear explanation of how to prune Wisteria I have heard. I now know where I have been going wrong, so thanks Mark👍😁

Best wishes with it 😊 mark
Dear Mark,
Thank you for this very helpful video!
Mark
Thankyou, just stumbled across your video, very clear instructions, thankyou very much, so helpful. Liked and subscribed, x
brilliantly explained! great video thanks mark!
Excellent video and most informative
Very helpful.... thank you.
Thank you. Thanks for watching and also thanks for commenting, very much appreciate your feedback. Mark

THANK YOU,MARK...my plant is several yrs old and NEVER BLOOMED..sadly now I know how to take care of it Thanks to YOU..❤️🥰🌿🪻🪻
Thank you for this video!!!!
I love wisteria and i would like to get plants thanks
Hi Fred, are you in the UK? Mark
Am in east Africa
Mark this an excellent video regarding wisteria pruning. I have a question regarding Wisteria species 'sinensis' and 'floribunda'; do their tendrils spiral in opposite directions, and if so, which is clockwise and which counter-clockwise. This question is asked for identification and training purposes. Thanks.
Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Regards the tendrils. That's an interesting point and I must confess I don't know the answer. I'm away the next week. I'll have a look into it when I get back. Mark
Japanese = clockwise
Chinese / american = anticlockwise
Adoro las glicinas💅🖐️
Amazing
Nice video. We have had a wisteria now for around fifteen years and we are still waiting for it to flower.🤔😇
I hope you are not pruning all the flower spurrs off? Good luck with it. Mine took 5 years before flowering. Worth waiting for! Mark
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK I probably am. But thanks for the advice
Thanks 🎉
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
We planted Jasmine up our House it was stunning every year we did the trim & tidy.
We sold the house the new owners cut it down 😮💨
Oh I'm sorry to hear this. I love jasmine too 🙁
Brilliant advice thank you!!!!
When you say in winter to prune it back to 2-3 buds How can you tell where they are? Mine look all twig dead like. Awesome video 🙏
Thank you ❤xxx
Thank you so much for a great explanation!! My parents are about to move from our childhood home and have a beautiful wisteria in their garden. It is possible to get some cuttings from it to start a new plant for their new garden? 😊
Hi, thank you for watching. I understand cuttings are difficult but you can try. You can also try collecting and planting seed pods although I believe it can be complex and take 15 years. I've heard the easiest way is to bury a few of the whips in soil whilst they are still growing. It's called laying i think(?) but if they are moving imminently this may not be feasible.
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK how long does “laying” take, do you know? Thank you so much for your quick response
@@missh2677 i don't have expert knowledge but I think it is months rather than weeks. Perhaps the seller will allow access post sale?
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thank you.
I realy need to cut it right back but afraid it will not flower again
Thank you
Very well explained Sir! Thank you so much! (Side note: you should probably look into teaching - you exude patience and clarity).
Wow. Thank you foe this very encouraging comment. Very much appreciated. Best wishes. Mark
Mark
❤️
Brilliant, thank you! Very clear. May I ask you, what about feeding Wisteria? I have a plant that has not flowered for years even though I have tried both pruning and not pruning it... Somebody told me I must never feed Wisteria as they would just give leaves and no flowers if I do?
I sometimes wonder, “who will take care of my plants when I’m gone?” Weird to think of, but they are a bit like pets.
I'm the same. I know that whoever moves here after me will likely take my garden apart 🙁 just got to enjoy it now I guess
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Yes, I agree completely.
Mark
All I want is for my Wisterias to bloom this year!!!!
Oh good luck. I hope it does 🤞🤞🤞
Very helpful. Does anyone know anything about fertilizing wisteria? I'm not sure how old mine is but we've been here over two years and it hasn''t bloomed at all.
Great information 👍. Looking forward seeing mine flower for the first time. Growing well. Do you add pottast just before flowering?
Thanks drew. I haven't ever added anything to my wisteria. However, those borders (and other borders) at the front have been where i occasionally scattered the ashes from my wood burning stove, and i believe that has a beneficial effect. Thanks again. Mark
How long has yours been planted?
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK We do the same with our ashes too. Planted just over 2 years now.
I think i waited just over 2 years. Good luck in the spring ☺️
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK fingers crossed 🤞
Mark
👍👍👍👍👍
When and what do you fertilize your wisteria?
Merhaba mark bu güzel ev sizinmi çok büyük cokta güzel dışındaki mor sarmaşık çiçeğin adı ne ailenizle güzel günlerde oturun turkiyeden selamlar😊
tekrar teşekkür ederim. ve Türkiye'ye merhaba. Mark
Thanks for this! My wisteria is forever producing tendrils right up until leaf drop and I find I have to constantly cut them back to manage its size. Does cutting back in September do any harm?
Doesn't harm it. But if you want blossom you would need to consider the regime I described. Thank you
Awesome. Thanks for your reply
Wisteria in the north is a beautiful vine but in the south it's an indestructible weed.
incredible how variations in geography and weather can make so much difference. thank you. mark
Doesn't it damage the basement of the house, when planted so close to it?
I think there is potential for that to happen yes. Worth keeping in mind when planting. Mark
Thanks Benita. I don't feed mine. Did you prune yours at all recently? I'm curious about the absence of flowers.
@@MarksHouseandGardenUKHi Mark, No, I haven't pruned it since the winter. Really hoping we get some flowers, but no sign at the moment .
I’ve had mine three years only leaves no flowers
Hi Yvonne. Please be patient they can be slow to flower but once they start they keep going 😊
