I’m glad I found this channel, I have an existing M1008, when I bought it 12 yrs ago it only had 9K on the odometer & the title also states the miles on the truck. It still has the 6.2 diesel in it, one day I’m gonna convert it to a 5.9 Cummins 12 Valve P Pump
New subscriber here from Denver, Colorado. Nice square! Bummer you got hosed on the Dana 60. I’ve got a 1980 K30 Single rear wheel 400/th400/205. Funny story, found it on craigslist in the general for sale for $2500 listed as a k20. Pulled up and it was a little rough but saw the 60 underneath and almost crapped myself haha. Had a hack rustoleum enamel paint job. Over last few years LS swapped it and got most of the body work done and frame coated. New project is rebuilding a 1983 Four Wheel Camper for it that i got for free. Keep it up while catch up!
I also forgot to ask how do you like the best mud tires I think that BFG made years ago??? I’m running a set with the same tread pattern that you are running!!! Mine are the 35”x12.50x16”!!! What size tire did you say that you was going to run again??? I would definitely not run with a 4.56 gear!! I’d definitely go with a 4.88 gear!! Just a little bit lower geared witch should work better with the 40” tires that you are planning on running!!! Why do I say that?? Well because 4.56 gears are what I went with in my 1969 Chevy 1Ton 4x4!! I’m running a 38.5” or the 39.5”?? And it definitely don’t have enough power or where I think it should be!! Off road design has a chart and it definitely shows that I am definitely on the lower side of power with how I have everything set up and the boggers!! The 4.88 in the chart they had showed the 4.88 would be the medium range gear to use and then I believe the 5.13 was the gear for the best torque and power!! And with you wanting to run 40” tires you would definitely be much happier with 4.88 gears and have the power when needed and not being as sluggish as it will be with the 4.56 gears!!! Just thought I’d let you before you end up buying a set of gears and then find out that the 4.56 gears don’t have the power you are looking for!! Plus big blocks don’t like high Rpms and with the 4.56 gears you are going to be on the higher RPMS!! At least see if you can find the graph that shows the tire size, motor that you are using, the different gears and where your rpms will be at with all the different gears!!! I definitely liked looking at the graph instead of going threw all the different stuff mathematical!!! I definitely wish I would have went with the 4.88 my self and I even have a pretty stout motor that I built for my truck!!! I built a 421 sbc that I put in the truck and put it on a Chassey dyno and it was just shy of 700 HP and the torque was Wright up there with the HP and at some rpms higher than the HP was!!! The guy that ran the dyno has been doing dyno testing motors for 40 years he had said!!!
I prefer the old school BFG mud tread. I’ve burned through a few sets of KM and KM2’s on Cherokees in the past and always loved them. I ran the new BFG mud on my ‘17 Ram 3500 for probably 60k miles. They are good too, just like the old ones better. My axles are M1008 axles so they come with factory 4:56’s which will be great for me for now, especially with having the granny low transmission. If I get more serious (and rich) then I’d be looking at more gearing.
The ram steering is worth every bit of the money. Also the frame where steering box mounts on these trucks are kinda weak are bad about cracking. I would re enforce the frame for trails.
I'm sure I'll be doing more steering upgrades later for sure. I've got two things going for me on the steering box area, one is that I have a steering box brace to install. Two, the one ton frames are slightly thicker and a little less prone to cracking. Fingers crossed that mine is good!
@@PootsGarage I didn’t think that they had changed the frames on the 1 ton singles. I would imagine you should be good then since you have a brace. That’s possibly where your strength will come from. I do know this tho, I always kept cheap steering joints and ball joints on my trucks. I had thicker track bars and steering links, but used cheap tie rod ends and such for a weak point that could give, and be easily replaced and quickly. Keeps from breaking expensive parts. I don’t really know, just something an old guy taught me, but I’m sure there’s better solutions now. It helped me not make major uh ohs like you did with the xj 😂 I remember watching the track bar bend like a tootsie roll in the video lol!!!
Buddy I just ran across your channel and I absolutely love your build!! I’m actually working on a 1981 Chevy 1Ton 4x4 with the SM435 and the 205T-Case!! My manual tranny is the one with a low first gear and is shorter than the SM465!! I believe the one with the lowest first gear low and also the shortest tranny is called a SM435 I believe?? I can look at the tag again on the side if needed!! I’m just not by it Wright now!!! Mine also has the Dana60, 14 bolt F.F., 4.10 gears and a Detroit locker in the rear!!! It was ordered specially for a fire department back in 1980!!! I was wondering what springs you had ordered from off road design?? My front leafs were frowned pretty good when I got the truck so ordered off road designs custom leaf springs for the truck!!! I wanted to keep it stock but did do the rear leaf springs shackle flip on it!! I was wanting to see how much flex I could get out of it!! There custom leafs are a little pricey at about 500.00$ every corner!!! I also have a 1969 Chevy 1Ton 4x4 that has everything the same and have had there rear shackle flip kit on it for 15 to 20 years and that truck runs a set of 39” boggers and everyone that rides in it with me are always just going nuts and can’t believe how smooth it rides with boggers on it!!! My1969 also has the SM435 with a custom made 32spline output shaft so that eliminated the week spot in the tranny and also install the doubler setup!! Air lockers in both the Dana60 front axle and the 14 bolt rear axle!!! I have absolutely loved the setup on this setup and that is why I’m doing it again to another rig!!! After I put the front leafs on my 1981 Chevy I had only drove it maybe 5 miles or so up to the gas station for some cold beverages and then noticed in that short distance one of my rear leaf springs main leaf busted so I had to go an order a set of rear leaf springs for it!! So far I have liked the custom leaf springs from off road design but haven’t yet had the chance to see how good they maybe at flexing!!! I definitely love all the parts from off road design plus if you have any questions they super helpful at making sure that they answer all your questions you have!!! Steven Watson is such an awesome guy and has never gotten mad at me for having to answer all my questions that I have had for him!!! Heck I’ve talked to him for over a half hour and that was just so he could find the Wright way to explain how to do something and that I really understood how to do it!!! Super super nice guy and I have never delt with a better company at all!! I’m in Iowa and found out that there was another company selling off road truck parts just like off road design does but had already baught all my parts!! And actually the other off road company is DIY4x4 and they are in Iowa and the same state I live in also!!! Lol!! Is it still possible to get a sticker from you?? I absolutely love collecting stickers and put them on my tool box’s and all over my shop!!!! Twenty two nine 0 five 18th Ave. New Virginia Iowa 50210!! So hopefully I can get a couple from you!! I have subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to watching your builds for sure!!! Well what an awesome video and remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!! And please let me know on the leaf springs that you got and if they are any good or not!!????
Hey bud, thanks for all the support. Great comments! I see some of your questions here got answered in other videos you watched since then. But it sounds like you’ve got some real solid trucks and have a lot of experience working on them. Give me some time to get some stickers out to you, I usually handle the UA-cam business on my weekends, which end on Saturday because of my work schedule.
I have the m1028 with true Trac 60 up front. Your truck is pretty clean considering your up north. My 1028 has a substantial skid for the one tank on driver side, might look into it before moving
Just found your channel and hit the buttons. I'm looking forward to your progress keep up the hard work , p.s. I am doing a dana 60 high steering swap on my 69 chevy truck
This is gonna be a cool rig when completed. BTW not bad pronunciation of dolgeville lol. I knew it'd be tricky to pin on the map bc it's a small, drop in the bucket town in the mountains lol
subscribed !! You can just give me the stock axels... no really. Just a little advice. You do realize this equipment lasted for years without upgrades. Some of it was designed to absorb the damage this equipment received for over 50 years. When you replace soft mounts with urethane and rag joints with direct metal on metal, you will feel it in the ride, and your frame will take direct damage. There is a price for some of those upgrades!!! Most of them are good, but think about why the engineers did what they did. SOMETHING has to give!!! or break, your choice.
Oakdale, TN. Came across this video while checking other videos on cross over steering for my 6" lifted '84 K10.
