    When you’re gone, your writing will give your family comfort. I feel close to my dad when I see his writing.

      I agree and do add my handwriting in from time to time for that reason. I have a handful of cards from my dad and enjoy reading them still after 20 years.

      @@CraftyConceptswithErin I wish... I was eyeing the craft retreat Simple Stories will be holding in September but with the past two years we've had, I'm reluctant to book things ahead of time especially when traveling to another country is involved. One of these days, we'll craft together again without thinking twice about it. For now, I have to tuck that idea in my back pocket and try to remember it for later. ;)

    I rarely comment on videos, but your content has been the most impressive I have watched in years. You are delightful to listen to and the videos are full of helpful content and inspiration. I had to put scrapbooking aside for almost two decades due to caregiving responsibilities. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed to step back into crafting and just when starting to sort and purge over a century of photos and documents from several generations of relatives, the closure of Close to My Heart was hard news as it was the main resource I have collected from & worked with. Your 100 layout videos have been the inspiration that has helped me move forward. I look forward to binge watching your entire play list ! You are awesome! Thank you.

    This is by far the best scrapbooking video I've seen yet - your layouts are SO creative and your suggestions are excellent. I saved my daily planner's unused lined pages and plan on using those as journalling pages in a scrapbook for my son. they're a perfect size and can still be cut down as needed. Your suggestion for using a textbox will really help when I type an entry, too. Thanks!

    I'm so glad you mentioned the acid free statement regarding the clear 8 1/2 x 11 labels. I also wondered about the labels you print out from your portable label maker.

    • @CraftyConceptswithErin
      @CraftyConceptswithErin  Рік тому

      That is a great question. I don’t see anything specifically stating they are acid free. I have had the clear plastic ones slightly yellow from long ago so I switched to the white paper option and have used it for over 15 years without issue in my albums. It still looks great. Whenever I’m not 100% sure about it I just don’t let it touch my photos. Sometimes I add ephemera from travels (tickets stubs and things of that nature) and I never know if those things are archival safe so just separate from photos to be careful.

    That’s a good tip on the redline tape to prevent other parts from coming apart. I have typically just used my ATG gun/tape and made a gusset but never on the back of a photo. I may have to try combining for success. Nowadays I mainly just work in travelers notebooks but it’s valuable information no matter your style because adhesives are everything when doing any kind of paper crafting in general.

As years go by, when I look back, I forget the year, how old my kids were at the time, & I love the funny memories that I would have forgotten if I hadn’t journaled. I usually use pocket cards or dicut boxes/tags onto my layout. I love your idea of printing on clear labels. I found the Avery transparent shipping label at Staples & just bought the last one. Thank you! That is such a bummer your printer won't take your cardstock, I think I'd be saving for a new printer. I always look for one that has a rear feed option. Some thicker papers won't round the bend in a tray feed printer. Hopefully that is making sense. But handwriting your journaling is always a good and easy way to get the story on the layout.

    I love the idea of using a label maker. I will bring my label maker on my next scraping retreat. I thought I'd also mention a few tricks I've used. When using your printer, if you don't want black text you can change the colour of the text (assuming you have a colour printer) and often there is a setting for vellum. I've also found my handwriting looking nicer if I use a marker with a chisel tip, it will be a bit larger mind you. Finally, if there isn't much to journal I will sometimes use micro-sized sticker letters. It is tedious and you will need to use a tweezer but it gives a different look. Love watching your videos. Please don't stop they are always inspiring.

      These are really great tips and I appreciate you sharing. I used to change the color when printing quite a bit but for some reason haven't done that in a while. Loved your video - great seeing all those options and good examples in one place. Your layouts are beautiful. I've used most - maybe all - of these journaling options - journaling strips is probably my favorite, but another one I use a lot is similar to #7, except that I rarely handwrite more than a few words. I will create my text in Word so that it will line up with the journaling card or sticker, print on plain paper, then tape my card or sticker over the printed text, and run it back through the printer to print on the card. I also use just plain journaling blocks a lot - similar to #4 -- print on any plain or patterned paper to fit my space, cut out, edge with ink or mat with another paper or cardstock, and adhere to the layout - yes, very 'old school', -- but I always embellish the journaling block to dress them up. I also killed a printer a few years ago running vellum through it for my journaling, but that hasn't stopped me from using vellum on my pages.

    • @CraftyConceptswithErin
      @CraftyConceptswithErin  3 роки тому

      Hi Judy, I am imagining that moment when you killed your printer with the vellum, what a bummer! You are the second person that has shared how you print and then line up the pocket card and run it through again. That is very clever and I will definitely try that trick.

    Fantastic ideas! I do most of these but haven’t printed my journaling out in such a long time. I used to do that more years ago when I first started scrapbooking, but I’m excited to try it out again with the journaling strip technique. I love the look of that much better than the block of journaling places somewhere but find that I use the pocket cards a lot as well as label stickers (like from Elle’s studio) I stagger a few labels of differing sizes and write directly on them. I’m not much of a story teller and typically do The Who what, where, when. Or bullet /list journal. Thanks again for all the inspiration!!

      I love the strip journaling, it’s definitely my favorite. Most of my layouts just contain the basic details, it’s not as common for me to write the whole story. Pocket cards are always a good option and add character as they usually have a design element.

My preferred is definitely on the computer and I do print on transparencies quite a lot, as well as using pocket journaling to save room on my layouts. Thank you Erin, this was so helpful. I've used a couple of these ideas in the past but my usual is a journaling block that I've done on the computer. I've never seen it done with transparent sticker paper, I really liked the look of that. Also like the journaling strips - like you said, it's nice that the pattern paper is peeking through. Most of the time I’m just directly writing my journaling down. But I’m not always that happy with it. I write way to much and often it changes the whole look of my page. Love the look of journalingstips, but its so much work and i don’t do it so often. One time i messed up my stripes and had to redo it as well. 😅 Funny now, but man was i pissed that day.🤣😜
    Love your examples and ideas. Hopefully more people will write their storys down! Whenever i see a layout without journaling i feel it’s missing a important part. Like it has no soul or something like that. Can’t describe any better in english.

    Thanks, Erin. These are great ideas. I think journaling is very important, especially capturing names, dates and places (who, what, where and when). I also had it very engrained in my scrapbooking experiences that it is really important to capture your own handwriting, so I do as much of that as I can... although, the older I get, the less appealing my handwriting is. Ugh~ As important as I think using my own handwriting is, I will also counter that with the idea that it is just as important to actually capture the story - and sometimes, it's just so much more efficient to use a printer. It saves so much time and you can really get your text to fit very nicely on a page that way. I was curious, when you do strip journaling, how particular are you with trying to make sure your strips are the same width (not the length so much as the width of the strips)? I guess, whenever I try to do that, I get too caught up in trying to get them all the same size and it drives me crazy. I have not tried the laser labels... but I think I will! I'm glad to know they are photo safe. I am also a big fan of incorporating whimsical quotes, bible verses and poems that fit with my layouts.

      I love the idea of adding bible verses and quotes. I totally forgot to mention phrase stickers but those are awesome for painting as picture as well. Hello Cathy, you should totally try it! In the computer under page setup I select 4x6 or 3.5x5 for my paper size. My printer has a slide that you can adjust to the paper size and then it goes right through no problem. Someone else suggested printing it on regular paper then adhering the pocket card over the printed area with removable tape and running it through again so it prints on the card. I thought this sounded like a clever idea.

      @CraftyConceptswithErin  Рік тому

      I am so glad this was a helpful video for you. I have two different printers, my primary photo printer is the Epson Picture Mate 400 and it's amazing for photos. It will also take smaller (5x7 and under) sized pieces of cardstock. I also have an Epson Expression Photo XP-970. It is my all purpose office printer but it also prints photos. It has a rear feed tray making it a good option for thicker paper like cardstock. I can size cardstock down to a 3.5 x 5 and run it through this printer also. I have heard some will adhere a smaller piece of cardstock to a letter sized paper and run it through their printer. You'd print first onto the letter size paper then attach your small cardstock over the printed area then print again. Hopefully that makes sense but if your printer doesn't like cardstock that may not work for you.

      Hello, welcome to this wonderful scrapbooking hobby! I do not love my handwriting either and tend to type my journaling on the computer however they do say it is good to add bits of your handwriting because your family will enjoy seeing it in the future though. I have an old Dymo Letratag label maker. I plan to upgrade to the Brother P-Touch as this is what many of my crafty friends have and highly recommend. I recommend using the white paper tape in your label machine, the plastic options can yellow over time if they are not acid free. I have used label maker tape in my albums for over a decade and not had any issues but I do not place it in direct contact with my photos because it is not marked as archival safe. Here is a link to the Brother p-touch amzn.to/4dJol6Z there is also a less expensive option amzn.to/3X6TXwe
