One Year, One Dress | Interview with Elizabeth Withey
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2024
- During the holidays I visited the Edmonton downtown library to chat with journalist, writer, and artist, Elizabeth Withey about her project of wearing the same dress everyday in 2015.
She writes about her experience with her dress 'Laverne' on the blog Frock Around the Clock / frockaroundtheclock
Have you have ever worn the same item for a long period of time? Or would you ever try incorporating more of a 'uniform' into your closet?
Also sorry about the audio background noise, something went wrong with the microphone :(
Thanks for watching!

When I was working, I wore the same dress every workday for three years-- washing it at night & hanging it to dry. Saved so much time, and you just add a sweater over it to change it up/keep warmer. Mine was longer, sleeveless, very simple. People thought it was pretty odd of me, but I think I learned to appreciate the freedom of a uniform while attending Parochial school.
I would need two of the same dress. Wear one while the other one dries.
I have 6 dresses (same style) & cardigans. I've been wearing them for three years. Makes life so much easier!
This is interesting: this week the media was commenting that Kate Middleton wore an outfit she just wore in December. Mainstream may not care what we wear, but the media sure does.
It's kinda crazy that a celebrity wearing the same thing twice is newsworthy, I guess that just shows how unfortunately rare it is.
I don't think Meghan Markle got this message....not when she wears gowns to a woman's shelter...
Materialistic people that’s why.
Are you referring to Catherine Duchess of Cambridge?
I think what stunned me the most is the fact that she managed to find a dress that worked for all seasons. Thanks for bringing such an interesting story to your channel! I always look forward to your new video in my sub box.
Thanks! :) Yeah I though it was really interesting how she wore it in both the hot summers and very cold winters.
One single dress? I still have a lot to learn...
I quite did it last year on summer, because I had a surgery and needed a few months off. I was wearing the same 4 tops and 3 bottoms for 3 full months. And I was always so excited about my clothes coming back from laundry! Like, "Hey, hello you! Let's hang out together again!" every time. I will definitely do the same this year, it was so much fun *-*
Kate Middleton has been great about repeating classy looks. Great video, thank you for sharing.
The dress itself is very pretty and simple. Love it.
I agree :) I think she chose really well, simple and versatile but still interesting with the asymmetrical details.
I really love capsule wardobing. It takes away the stress of trying to pick something to wear. Everything in my wardobe matches and I can dress it up or down depending on the event or how I feel.
I love this idea! A grey ankle length skirt that was part of my fall/winter capsule has become my favorite piece. I wear wore it 3-4 days per week. Now that spring has arrived, it will be part of my Spring/Summer capsule as well.
I wear a few pieces constantly. When it retires. and that means beyond all wear and tear and beyond rag point. people ask me what happened to your "whatever it is". they remark, "I didn't know it was you where is the......"
I think I will do this. Off to read the blog and see if I can source a suitable dress. Thanks for the inspiration.
That's so exciting! I'd love to hear about your experience if you try it out!!
Kas Sommers it's been about a year... How did it go? :)
I remember I did something similar in winter 2012, just because I had to move and took only one set of clothes. It was great not having to think every morning what to wear.
This is really inspiring. And all the photos of her outfit variations were so simple but stylish. I love this. Thanks for sharing her with us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was cool. I revamped my wardrobe a bit. I have about 4 black tops and 2 black pants and that's what I wear during my work week. On my weekends I have 2 outfits. I usually wear one of those for the whole weekend. Takes the thinking out of getting ready. Thanks for sharing this interview! :)
+Sooz Will That so neat! Curious to see how it goes/how people react
I with ya on that Sis
Loved this interview! Really makes you realize that we don’t need as many clothes as we think. Thanks to you and Elizabeth for a thoughtful interview.
Yes perfect if you never do anything that gets you dirty, imagine doing yard work, exercising (yes i can tell she doesn't exercise) and then wearing the same thing to work! such a great idea. Or perhaps just be naked while you do your laundry!
Talking about celebrities wearing the same :) I live in Sweden and the women of our Royal House do this alot.
I meen in public, events aso. In december our veeeeerry Environment aware Crown Princess Victoria took her Mum, the Queens old dress that she had for a Nobel prize gala to the same event. Viktoria uses either her own representative clothes or her mums all the time, even the Queens old dresses from the 70:ties
Our 3 grown princesses, Viktoria, her younger sister Madeleine and their brothers wife Sofia wear eashothers clothes to. Some galadresses we have seen at least two of them wearing at least total of 4-5 times and they seem to chare maturnaty wardrobe to.
Viktoria and Sofia are very specific with what brands they buy/wear and it´s allways Swedish design with a consious thought, mostly up coming female designers.
The family have saved alot of the old clothes from when Viktoria and her two younger sibblings where small and now their kids (total of 7) wear the old clothes all the time.
All us Swedish Environment concerned ppl are very proud of that our Royals do this, that they show others and have both Brains, heart and a concious mind.
yeah our king is the best going to strip clubs and living large ;)
Lol we live in different Swedens. Viktoria doing this is just some kind of greenwashing.
I am so impressed with this interview, with her personality, with her manner of expressing herself. She made me really think about myself. Thank you for making me question my motives. It is rather a set up against women, that we make less money overall and buy more clothes overall to wear just to work. My husband wears a uniform, literally, so he has no concept of how many black shoes it takes. One pair won't work, or will it? This is what I am thinking about today, how easily I gave in over the years. Was that pleasure worth it, looking back? How much control I gave up over the years by blindly conforming.
So inspiring! Although, I must admit I'm not sure I could ever go to this extreme. I might eat my words some day. haha! The whole "you can't get caught wearing the same thing twice in one week" is ridiculous. I couldn't care less if people see me wearing the same clothes all the time. Whenever someone comments on it I always take that opportunity to remind them I own a washer and dryer. Then I share my capsule wardrobe story ;-)
I wear a scrubs uniform 4 days a week. On the other 3, I mostly wear jeans and a tshirt. I used to think I had to have all these clothes that looked so nice (and yes, I'd like to look better than jeans and a tee), but I realized that I don't go anywhere fancy....so why was I buying fancy clothes?
This was such a great interview! Very inspiring!
This was such a great and interesting chat! I definitely can see the benefit in having such a defined uniform but I'm not sure it would work for me and my lifestyle (although wouldn't that just make things easier?!). Thank you so much for sharing Erin xx
great video, completely in line with discussions going on right now. this is probably a much needed final sign that I should try it myself.
I found this, and Elizabeth, so interesting. Although it may seem on the surface that this would be boring to wear the same thing all year, it really is a challenge to push one's creativity.
This is so interesting! Very extreme, but very insightful. Thanks for sharing!
I love this! What another great perspective. Thank you for interviewing her, this was such great insight.
Namaste

I really liked this video. I wear the same dress pretty much 5 days a week and another dress the other two days and its really liberating in a way :)
Sounds great and easy!
Wow let me try
Loved this interview!!
This is incredible. Really great video. Thanks so much for sharing!
This is so cool! Congrats on her challenge lol it's re-motivated me to love my capsule wardrobe
Our Queen Maxima of the Netherlands wears the same clothes on more then one occasion. A good example, right?
Thanks for this video. I'm rethinking my wardrobe.
that's so interesting i love her approach its so lovely
I studied for one year in Japan. Most of my teachers were male, but even though we could notice that they were the same suit and tie every school day. We had 2 female teachers, one wore the same skirt all year around. She had two blouses, a jacket and a long heavy coat. The other female teacher had maybe four suits, but she was the dean of the department and had other business to attend to than classes.
I absolutely love this idea!
very inspiring. Loved it!
Very much enjoyed listening to this intelligent, thoughtful young woman. Interesting and meaningful project.
This inspired me to do a capsule again. I realized how it made my life so much easier during the semester! I need to get rid of a lot too, but I just created my winter capsule! Yay!
That's so exciting! All the best with your winter capsule! :)
Thank you! I loved it!
This was great! Thank you very much for sharing! ;)
I really enjoyed the interview. Life is certainly easier when you don't have to make so many choices about things like clothing. I'm not sure I would wear something for a whole year like she did but I do have dresses which I can wear with leggings and different tops under them if I want to try and pack light for a few days. I'm going away for 4 days in February and was trying to decide what clothes to take so I might follow this example.
This really inspires me to just use what I have now and not buy anymore for a year. Trouble is I'm currently 5 months pregnant but this video inspires me to get creative with my current wardrobe as my belly expands and see how long I can go without buying maternity clothes!
Amazing! She is so brave!
Love the concept - tfs!
wow this was fascinating. I'm tempted to maybe try this for a month or something
Oo that would be a fun experiment! Please let me know if you do try it! :)
Go ahead man good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you described my dream!!! thank you!
Awesome, Loved this!
Too many options can take a lot of time to decide. I'm retired now but when I worked 9 to 5 I made my own stack of look book half page sketches and every night pulled up the next page so I didn't have to think about what to wear. It became routine and gave me a new look every day on a rotating 30 day cycle with minimal effort and expense.
No way! I've read about Elizabeth and followed her blog! I live in Edmonton too!
I live in New Jersey in the US and I noticed where I live at least that people only notice that someone wearing the same thing if that person happens to always be mean and grouchy to everyone, smells, had wrinkly dirty clothes. Then they wind up paying attention to what that person wears. But as for a normal every day person like myself, I'm always smiling and have a positive attitude, I don't let stress or anger show, and no one notices that I wear the same things every week because I keep them clean and wrinkle free and I check for stains and smells before putting something on.
My sister empties her closet twice a year, buys a new simple, capsule wardrobe for either winter/fall or summer/spring. Wears it all out, starts over.
What does she do with the clothes she no longer wants to wear?
Princess Kate wears the same thing sometimes and she looks amazing every time! Those blue wedge shoes, love them!
Really inspiring 👌🏼👌🏼
Love this.. I've recently developed my own "uniform" wardrobe, it's been such a great experience, I wish I'd done it earlier in my life instead of wasting tonnes of money buying crap I either didn't wear or it didn't suit me! I'm not sure I could wear the same dress everyday, but I can certainly wear the same type of thing.
That's awesome! Really great to hear you're enjoying it!
Wauw, so interesting, thanks for sharing.
Love this-I'd be so tempted to do this if I wasn't in an office environment.
I’m in an office environment and have been doing this for a week now. It’s mentally challenging, I’ve had to answer questions like - did you not sleep home😂 I believe by the end of this week my colleagues will be over it.
Very interesting video!
This is a really cool idea. I might try it sometime...maybe only for a month, though.
I am inspired. I might try this. One month maybe
I'm female living in the Midwest Region of U.S. yes - when I was working full-time (computer security), my 'uniform' was a polo shirt + pants or skirt, with blazer and suede Mary Jane flats, In fall, I wore a cotton vest over the polo. In winter, I wore a long sleeve cotton sweater over the polo. On Sundays, I would organize and put all 5 outfits together on the closet rod. I bought 3 different colored Mary Janes, 5 different colored polos, 3 different colored pants (L.L. Bean), 3 different colored vests, and 5 different colored 'Drifter' l/s sweaters (Lands End). This worked great for me because I'm not a 'morning' person. Now that I'm retired, I am using my polo shirts as golf shirts when I go to the putting green. I donated my cotton vests. The L.L. Beans pants wore out (after 20+ years), so I made cut offs from them and use them to exercise or for sleep shorts.
Alex somebody did that way back with the Little Brown Dress. The blog was amazing but it was taken down.
Some celebrities do wear the same thing repeatedly but they often do it because if they're always wearing the same thing paparazzi won't get as much money for the photographs and may leave them alone.
Ohhhhh 🤔😯
I normally have a work uniform. Right now it’s black ponte NYDJ pants, Dansko Dotty heels, and a blouson top that I sew from rayon knit in a variety of colors and patterns. I don’t set out to create a work uniform, I just naturally gravitate to one. In jobs where I can wear jeans, I usually do, but I’ll stick to my favorite brand, cut, and color. No one has ever commented on my work uniforms, but I would be surprised if they didn’t notice. For me the work uniform is a way to always have something to wear which makes me feel comfortable and confident. I do still buy clothes and shoes which never become part of my uniform because they’re just not comfortable. I have decreased those purchases lately because they sit unworn for months before I give them away. I do buy multiples of everything however. I may have 3 pairs of the same black pants, and 2 prs of the same shoes for instance. I have a uniform, but to me that’s not the same as wearing the exact same articles of clothing every single day.
I like historical fashion and many wonder how they could keep one or two dresses clean and this proves you can like when she said she went 10 days without washing it. Cool.
Historically they also always wore slips and smocks under - the undergarment would be changed and cleaned so the actual dresses wouldn't get sweaty/dirty. :)
My Green Closet right! The other pieces she wore under it probably helped too.
I recently lost weight. I don't think I would do one dress but maybe two for my work capsule. TFS 😎 awesome interview!
Great experiment, certainly brave and strong to go in the face of common practices for the sake of our environment. We were all taught by advertising to want more, need more, so it needs strong people to reverse these unhelpful ways of living. Do you remember those old movies where the female lead often wore the same clothes in different ways? I like the reversible idea that they showed in those movies, very practical. Great topic.
I love this. Does she plan to keep wearing this dress through 2016?
She'll be keeping it in her closet but wont be only wearing it in 2016 :)
wow I would love to do it, I would have to find a dress that I really love though to even consider it
Interesting project :)
My little black dress is in my “declutter purgatory”...guess I’ll pull it out and give it another try 😀
💚
Sometimes I feel inclined to wear the same thing every day but in the past I used to worry about it in the way that 'I not stylish enough', 'I am not classy enough' going down to some stupid misconceptions and jokes circulating in the society that a woman who wears the same clothes every day probably spent the night not at home. Nowadays I am moving away from those feelings and fears and towards a uniform and hopefully a minimal wardrobe.
It's in Edmonton! ;)
Yes! Are you from Edmonton? I grew up there :)
I'm not from Edmonton, but I'm from AB. So happy to see an Albertan youtuber too!
People may not say anything when they notice because they may not care or consider it rude. I love this and every now and then crave a uniform but I have minimized my wardrobe.....for me at least
What an interesting experiment! I'm curious if I could do something like this...with two young kids, I might be washing my one thing multiple times per day! :)
Lol!!!
Are you from Canada? I've been trying to search for Canadian-based eco-friendly/ethical/sustainable clothing stores or at least places that will ship to Canada, but so far not much luck! Any suggestions?
2 years later....Respecterre is very good. Based in Quebec, but bilingual web site.
I have a black Jjill Tall dress that is sort of long, but not quite a maxi. Pull over. I have two of the same dress/same color. I wear them a LOT. PERFECT fit. Not too tight. Not a sack. I often wish I can live in these two dresses. I wear them with a multitude of cardigans and with everything from Birkenstocks to clogs to nice sandals. The dresses have short sleeves and work well in California. I think that if I did not worry about what others would say, I would wear these dresses EVERY day even on weekends!
Wear them. If anyone comments tell them you have two. Mostly people don't care as much about our clothes as we do.
🌻🌻What material was the dress made out of?🌻🌻
Yeah, Wilma and Fred and Barney and Wilma wore the same thing everyday...and Gilligan.
I am working on this small wardrobe... 30 pair of white underware (one loads of whites) two jeans.... Jean shirt... Black tops... (5) gray top (1) ..black cardigan and three tanks to go with it black white and red.. black dress...jean dress...done😀
What a great idea. I wear the same closes over and over like a uniform. For work and in my free time. My only guilty pleasure are closes for working out.😈 But I hope to manage that too. 😉 Greetings from Germany.
💞💞💓
I have decision fatigue!.....so I understand this
I highly recommend a capsule wardrobe or uniform dressing for cutting out all those "what do I wear?" decisions! :)
i have five blue shirts and black pants that i alternate for work (and sometimes for social engagements) Would not survive in the same combo all everyday.
I found this very interesting, but the way the woman gave the dress its own persona a bit strange. I personally have thought about getting various dress shirts and just rotating them with my pants. I definitely think we all tend to gravitate towards our favorite clothes anyways.
Poor people also do this. It's great to see learning the value of getting back to basics and evaluating life's priorities becoming trendy.
Ten days without washing the dress? I would not want to do that.
Clearly she wore more than just a dress in the winter. By the time you have to put on jeans and long-sleeved shirt underneath, the dress just seems pointless. I don't see why this is noteworthy.
Charlize Theron could totally get away with it, as could Gweneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Jennifer Aniston, and many more!
i wear basically same clothes. same jeans and shirt. at home i have home pants and shirt. i have one party pants and party shirt. and i have lived like that all my life. am i stinking:)? no, i shower and use deodorant and wahs my clothes weekly. i really dont understand why people like shoping and have so much clothes
Two days after watching your video and this popped up in my feed. Hilarious. 😃 ua-cam.com/video/9KrN9OBhpyQ/v-deo.html
Cindy here...interesting video. I am wondering if we could be related? My maiden name is Witney. Unfortunately I am Not Canadian. I do Love Canada. Have visited several times. However I live in Minnesota...
J
This is way too extreme for me. I would get too bored too quickly
+Selina Moses me too.
Selina Moses Yeah. I'm all for minimalism and capsule wardrobes but this would just depress me. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a bit of fashion and colour in your life, you can do that without buying new clothes often. Kudos for this lady for doing this anyways.
I can't quite understand why women always say they would be "bored" wearing the same or similar clothes all the time... Don't you have anything more interesting in your life than the clothes you wear???? Men don't give a crap about clothes and they aren't bored and depressed about it... Find other things to make life interesting. The idea that we need our wardrobe to keep us from being bored is nothing but brainwashing. Break free!!!
Ultraviolet Morgan men are conditioned to not care about clothing so it’s natural for them to be ok with a simple uniform.
@@Sunshine4 Isn't that a contradiction? think a bit about meaning of the words and phrasing.
It may _feel_ natural, but it's literally (_literally_ literally) not when it's conditioned.
We need to deprogramme ourselves, true, and it may take effort to change brainwashing societal gender norms impose, and we don't need to go to such extremes as this to benefit. But *one dress* is a great way to challenge those norms.
Minimalist concept presented in front of stacks of old publications? really?
She works in a library, this was a quiet place with decent lighting we found to film.
Ok,, I failed to grasp the full meaning/conclusion of this "project"
