A magnificent movie. Haunting, frustrating, immensely emotional. If this movie doesn’t reach ones emotions then one is like Mr Stevens.

No, one is not like Stevens if it does not move you deeply. I dislike Stevens. He was a coward and liked his routine. Never wanted to face the unknown or make a commitment to someone. He was a gutless coward. I feel no sadness she left him, as she had a full life and he was a dried up old prune. He loved feeling sorry for himself.

Stevens was a weak, insecure, cowardly man and a mama's boy. He never had the balls to court a woman and take a risk with marriage and love. She made all the moves. He rejected her over and over again. Unless you expect her to be a doormat, there were other options, other men, like Ben. She did not wait around and married a man who would give her a life and partnership. She had kids with him and lived her life. Her love for Stevens dried up in the end. He just did not have what it takes. He was afraid of life, liked being subservient in his tiny little circle of activity, too cowardly to face the unknown.
I don't know why anyone thinks this is a sad story. Stevens got what he deserved, and Kenton made a full and rich life with Ben while she still looked good and was young. Excellent ending. I'm not sad at all. I despise men like Stevens. I was also in love with a man - my first great love. I married another. Same thing. I made a good life, and he is still single, no kids, no commitments. You get what you deserve. Wipe your tears ladies. Love is a 4 letter word most times. Live your life, don't wait for 'love'.

You're probably right about your comments but either way it was emotional and heartbreaking to see struggle of mr. Steven about his feelings. I have never heard about the book and the movie and I was shocked how beatiful it was

I think there's more to it than Stevens' faults. His priorities were skewed - he did have faithfulness, grit, commitment in him, but he gave all of it to a cause that did not deserve it, or rather, that could not by definition accommodate a human soul. But isn't it what happens to so many of us? In the movie as well as the book, Stevens' life story is a bit grotesque, maybe to get the message across better, but on average, things like that are not at all uncommon.

His priority in life was to become a "great butler" (mentioned many times in the book). That means: Staying single, no romance, no intimacy with the rest of the staff, dignity and authority. There was no room in his life for a woman, let alone family life.

Adult heterosexual men do not act like Mr. Stevens. Mr. Stevens is homosexual -- in a society, at a time when being homosexual is unacceptable. That explains "The Remains of the Day."

@@jodi2847, yea, actually I think that Mr. Stevens kind of is homosexual.
