    I have the Ridgid 16 gallon blower vac WD16850 here are the modifications I made.
    The front feet did not have tool attachments, so I replaced them with two rear feet from Ridgid (part 830716) at about $8 each, plus shipping. Re-use the casters. These grip the support pipes loosely, but it is solid enough when built. There may be better options for the feet.
    The 2" pipe was too short, so I cut it at 3". It's much easier to attach the flexible coupling to the front of the vacuum first, before making the other connections. Be sure to sand the PVC joints first, because you want to be able to take them apart, and unsanded 2" PVC is hard to take apart, even if only dry fit.
    For my vacuum, the 42" pipe was 2" too long, so I cut off another 2", making it 40".
    When I attached the caps for the 30" support pipes they were all 15 1/4" apart from one another on the board.
    Other than that, all of the measurements worked beautifully and it was a very successful build. Thanks, Burke, for blazing the trail and making it easy!

      @@BurkeMakesStuff I have thought of sharing mine with people for ideas but I don't do videos, lol. Friends that have seen it so far think it is awesome. Dewalt 10 gallon vacuum on the bottom (wheels removed) with green HEPA filter, bag. Wooden frame creating each level, all the way up to the air compressor! Footprint is only about 20"x20". Bottom board is a solid chunk of LVL for weight (which I got from a house that I was a part of building). Hardly ever have to worry about a clogged filter again!

    Great build. Brilliant You've definitely moved shop vacs forward. The cyclone. Two things are going on here. Primarily the fast moving air from the collection hose arrives at the much bigger interior space of the cyclone, the air slows down (think 4" hose to a '10" hose' this drops the pressure which also drops the moving air's ability to lift the particles - they drop to the bottom. Two places in the world you can see this. The inside curve of a river or stream, the river slows down and drops it's sand leaving a sand bar. Also if you drive between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and you look at the valleys as you're driving past you can see sand build up in the very center of the valleys - this is because being the deepest point, the wind that got squeezed coming over the ridge slowed down dropping its load of sand.
    The cyclone effect is a bit of extra. My cheap HomeDepot separator has no cyclone feature. This spins the air around the outside carrying the particles with it while dead center where there's a minimum of particles is the exit. Dyson vacuums also do this but at much higher rpm.
    Making it so efficiently vertical with places for all the fittings is a real winner. (For my vac I made a bracket out of 1/2" PVC, I have three vertical pieces of 1/2" PVC that I slip my extensions over.) Everyone with a shop should immediately build this.
    Another thing I learned over the years. My dad built us a house and installed a vacuum system. The vacuum and collection was down in the basement, with tubing running around the house. All we had to do was move the long hose to a room open a flap on the wall and plug in the hose. This is great for a couple of reasons, first the exhaust and all those tiny particles are not in the house, and you don't have to drag around the vac. Several years after this I learned that a builder was installing these in his houses, but instead of using the very expensive dedicated unit he was using the more powerful and less expensive ShopVac brand.

    Very well done! One potential enhancement would be an elevated arm to hold the hose higher than the tool...something akin to the Festool boom arm. I haven't figured out a good way to build that yet.

    My problem is my 20 gal Rigid vacuum is so old the intake port is on the motor section, and not on the side of the base. Hard plumbing in would make removing the motor/filter section difficult, and there is no way to add a bag. Darn well-built long-lasting Rigid product!

    New subscriber here. Nice rendition of John's idea.
    I built mine a couple of years ago but like John, I use the Dustopper. I've been very happy with my unit so far.
    A couple of months ago, after recovering from COVID, I noticed an increased sensitivity to fine dust. I was doing all the same things I had done before, but when I took off my mask, I started coughing. Put it back on, the cough would go away. That got me to thinking about how well my set up was working for my table saw, which is what I used it mostly for. Turns out, it wasn't doing much.
    I bought a handheld anemometer and used it to measure the CFM of my set up.
    At the port of the vacuum, with no hose, I was getting about 180 cfm. However, at the end of the hose, coming out of the Dustopper, I was only getting around 77 cfm. Not nearly enough to properly service my Ridgid R4512 table saw.
    As a result, I'm upgrading, adding really, a 750 cfm DC from Rockler to use primarily with my table saw. I'm still going to use my vacuum/dustopper set up with smaller tools, e.g. sander, circ saw, as it works really well with those. I will be adding a HEPA filter to my vacuum as well to eliminate as much fine dust from the air in my shop as I can.

    • @BurkeMakesStuff
      @BurkeMakesStuff  3 роки тому

      The HEPA makes all the difference! I have dust allergies and used to get sneezing “attacks.” It was crazy. Since the upgrade I haven’t had a single issue!

    This is a great upgrade for wood shop dust collection and highly recommended. I would though recommend that you screw the PVC pipe fittings to the vacuum wheels to keep it all together while pushing it around. I also finished my system with a spray can of truck bed liner which is much more durable than spray paint and easier to clean. Finally I made a large wooden cleat to wrap the shop vacuum cord around while not in use and mounted it to the plywood in a way that it also became a handle to push the new apparatus around the shop.

    Burke...i have a simple theory for you to test...there is enough meat to make a video of it...here goes.
    Decades ago when i was a young family man, in the military and so, i had no money. In need of a shop vac i bought a smaller cheapo...about a 5 gallon tank and i think a 2" hose. Well the hose was shorter than most, and of course the power left alot to be desired...my wife had thrown out an old (Eureka style) vacuum cleaner which had a 1 1/2" hose, (could have been smaller), wanting a longer hose, (and who doesn't), i joined the shop vac hose and the smaller diameter vacuum hose with a 2" to 1 1/2" coupling ...it worked great, in fact i think it increases yhe power of the suction and increased the power when i used it as a blower...ive always wondered if it did increase the power...or was it just me being boastful of my creation...i think id make a great vid.

    • @BurkeMakesStuff
      @BurkeMakesStuff  Рік тому +1

      So what it is is taking the amount of suction provided by the motor and by using a thinner hose, it has less room to intake that air, so air needs ro “move fast” to meet that amount of suction. The issue that’s often faced other using a thinner hose however is that it puts extra strain on the motor and can cause it to heat up and/or burn out completely

    Keanu and I greatly appreciate this build and the added info to my endless infinity of new knowledge and creative ideas. That being said I have subscribed and give you Two Right Thumbs Up for efforts and useful info. I agree with your design being space savings and clean-ability is fantastic, but as an HVAC ducting pro I should caution on the added number of elbows and length of tubing will reduce your vac suction considerably. Building side-by-side will help in this situation and someone will inevitably see all of this and build a simple two stage bagless and permanent filter machine.I would but I'm busy with energy efficiency and off-grid solutions. Cheers!

      @BurkeMakesStuff  Рік тому +1

      Well Thank you for all of that! Any suggestions on keeping as much suction as possible? Would sealing the PVC pieces together help at all? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

      @robgad2271 Рік тому

      @@BurkeMakesStuff Actually, what would help incredibly would be a deeper shop vac receiver, the vortex separator doesn't have to be round, it could rest in the bottom of the tank with a partition between the blower and it's drop-out zone, and that section would have a dust filter in the partition, the larger area for the drop of large pieces, below the inlet tube, and all of that plastic divider and filter lifts out when it's emptied. Something perhaps larger than 7 gallons would ratio best for a 2" diameter suction hose. Dyson, Red Devil, and others use chambers much like this but their filters are somewhat crap and in a shop vac it would take two filters and maybe an outlet HEPA for a muffler and find dust trap. Is that enough to keep it in a single profile floor space. My shop vac is a compact 16.5 HP beast and rips filters badly from impacts and high suction.

    Guess what.... there is now a newer model with 2 1/4 inserts on the wheels and I think the plastic is more plyable, the feet no longer screw to the vac bucket they just press on. This makes this design more flimsy overall..... still trying to work through it.

    If you used the dustopper instead, it would eliminate the need for the soft rubber cupplings and the vertical pvc from the vac up to the dust separator. It comes with a hose for that and all of the hoses are perfect matches between this model shop vac and the dustopper. If you're worried about the quality of the product, I build it this way and it works wonderfully

    bwahh nice build, but you always buy parts, I'm sort of a jimmy rigger, your whole unit made me think of those stationary central vacumes, ours looked like a hot water heater so then I thought, hmmm I could probably make this using an old hotwater heat and leave it in one place like the central vac, all metal parts and no plastic, hmmmmm.Wish i had a work shop I'd try you plans out but with no plastic parts. after a couple uses the heat loosens all seals on your design. Nice build, I'd give two thumbs up if it would let me.

      I toyed with the idea of building the cyclone myself, but decided to go with the dust deputy Felix kit mainly because of the ease of collecting all the parts that would be needed if I Jimmy rigged it. Not sure what you mean. Like a household vacuum? I don’t know that I’d risk it. While almost every little bit of sawdust gets stopped by the cyclone, I’d be concerned about the tiny % that makes it through. That’s why I added the HEPA set up.

      @@BurkeMakesStuffNo, she's wanting to see how you connect it to a sander or table saw or miter saw, so that she can verify its effectiveness in capturing the sawdust generated. Apart from that, she probably wants to understand what transitions are needed between the 2" shop vac hose and the various tools with dust ports. It's a fair question if the point is to have a cost effective dust collector for the shop.
