The Warning did a faithful cover of Enter Sandman in 2014. They’ve done that. Metallica saw that and were impressed. They invited The Warning to REWORK Enter Sandman with Canadian Singer Alessa Cara for the 30th anniversary Blacklist album. Two different genres of musicians tasked by Metallica to rework Enter Sandman. Keep the lyrics, but turn the song upside down, inside out, make it their own. This was what Metallica wanted.

No Disrespect but most people disagree. Metallica wanted the music reworked but to keep the words the same for the 25th Black list album. In 2014 they did great cover especially for very Young kids... What an amazing Band.

I'm a huge The Warning fan, and actually a huge Metallica fan as well. My initial reaction to this song was very similar to yours. I didn't like it at all. However, I set it aside and cleared my mind. I went into it the first time with expectations of how it "should" sound, and they didn't meet those expectations.
I let it sit for a day or two, and came in with an open mind thinking of it as a new song. After 2 or 3 listens, it started growing on me, and I learned to love it.
Think about the balls it takes to take one of the most overplayed songs by one of the biggest bands in the world and put a whole new take on it to go on said band's 30th anniversary album. In the end, they understood the assignment. Take one of our songs from this album, put your own spin on it and send it to us. That they did, and they paid homage to the original in the end. Any decent band can do a faithful cover of this song. Not many can make it sound brand new in a week's time.

For me it was love at first sight in the music video. The intro surprising and fantastic with Alessia, then it was a tiny bit too long in the outdoor scene. But when they went in and then stood in the doorways, building it up, then I was totally sold and when the original riff came I just dropped my jaw. So perfect! I think it is best to see the music video first. Then you understand the live version better.

This was a cover done for the Metallica Blacklist album which was a collection of covers requested by Metallica for the 30th anniversary of the Black Album. It features vocals as well from Alessia Cara in the original single. Metallica specifically requested that artists keep the lyrics but otherwise completely change up the song. I much prefer Dany's vocals in the live version to Alessia's in the single. They are more intense; Alessia's were even softer in the studio version. But the Ohhh ooohs in the background were the one part of Cara's vocals they kept for the stage version to keep her presence there. I believe they generally took the approach of keeping it more of a lullaby to pay homage to the original conception of the song, which was just that. Not every song will be for everyone, I get it. I like this one a lot, but I also don't completely love the drumming for some reason. But there is a good reason why it is SO different from the original.

*2014:* The Warning did a straight up cover of Enter Sandman as kids. When they were mainly a cover band. That's the version they played.
*2016-17:* When they added original songs in place of covers. Enter Sandman ws eliminated.
*2018:* The last cover the Warning played live as a band was Metallica's Atlas Rise at The Whiskey. It's their farewell of their cover band days.
*During Covid* The Warning dapped into covers since music industry was shutdown.
*2021:* Metallica was doing a charity project celebrating their 30th anniversary of their Black album called *Metallica's Blacklist Album.* Where Metallica asked 50 plus artists to record a cover of a song from the Black Album. The artist was free to do what they want with the song *EXCEPT THEY GAN'T CHANGE THE LYRICS.* Metallica asked Alessia Cara. A pop singer from Canada. A man who works for Cara also does work for The Warning. He suggested both sides do a collaboration. When The Warning got the okay from Metallica. *THEY HAD 8 DAYS TO COMPLETE IT. WITH CARA IN CANADA & WARNING IN MEXICO.* Covid travel restrictions.
The Warning decided to start their version where Metallica ended theirs in the nightmare lullaby. Then bring the song back to the beginning.
*Warnings Live Version:* The Warning took out Cara's pop vibe and gave it their signature Warning vibe.
*RECOMMENDATION:* Take a look at the original music video of The Warnings Enter Sandman with Alessia Cara.

What is your issue with Zep having a different opinion?
An opinion he is perfectly entitled to hold. Granted he did not have the information as to why this sounds like it does as opposed to a straight cover, but THAT is irrelevant as far as him liking it is concerned. Just because YOU and the majority of others (myself included) think it's great does NOT mean anything where another's opinion is concerned.
      I actually appreciate Zep's honesty.

As you can tell by now, there is a significant back story to this version of the song. This is not your "fault" but, that said, this is a good example of reaction channels not researching a bit before they react in order to have what is thought to be a "real" spontaneous reaction.
You had a real reaction but it was to your expectation of a standard cover and the Warning is no longer a "cover band".
I don't think it hurts a reaction to familiarize yourself with the artist or the history of the particular song then you can "react" to the song itself. Anyway, not to worry, read up on the Black List album and then you will get my point.
    Take Care

I have to admit, I am not a Metallica fan, and I was sick of this song, until this version came along. A lullaby where Dany very sweetly puts you to bed, then rouses the troops, shares a little prayer, the angel chorus comes to sing you to sleep, then Boom, the hammer drops. I think of this very much as the female version of the Sandman tale. So good. Delicate, powerful, soothing, strong, gentle, fierce-all at the same time. I love this one.

Perhaps a bit more research on the context of how the song originated would change your perspective.
TW were really the only ones to actually complete the project as Metellica requested for the Blacklist charity album.

  • @Amaranthine1000

It seems others have already pointed this out, but I'll reiterate it again. This song was done for the Metallica Blacklist album, a commemorative album of covers from the original Black album. Metallica asked many artists and bands to pick a song and cover it. But they specified they did not want a straight cover, but to put your own spin on the song. Turn it inside out, upside down or even mix it up, just don't change the lyrics. I have heard the entire album and only a couple of bands changed the songs they chose significantly but the only band that really recreated the song completely was the Warning and Alessia Cara, they did what was asked and more and did a brilliant job.
Also Alyssa Cara was first asked to do the cover, but she was unsure she could do it justice, so a member of her management team who also represented the Warning suggested a collaboration with The Warning and Metallica agreed. Alessia is a Grammy award winning Canadian pop singer, so her pop influences are evident, it fits the song as does The Warnings rock style, this is a true amalgamation of different genres and styles and a complete re-imagining of the song as requested by Metallica themselves. The Warning and Alessia were the only ones to really do what they were asked on that album with almost every other song being an almost note for note straight covers with a little flair here and there. It is fine if you don't like the song, not everyone will, but you should appreciate that The Warning and Alessia Cara did what was asked of them and did it damn well.
This version has evolved a even more since they originally released it as Alessia can't be there to perform it with them all the time, though they do use a track of her voice with the Whoa's that you don't seem to like much. I suggest you check out the original video (which by the way The Warning were also the only ones to get a video done as well) with Alessia Cara, done while the lockdowns were in effect with Alessia in Canada and The Warning in Mexico. Anyway that is the background and although it may not change your mind about liking the song more, at least you can understand why they did it this way and why it works, for most of us anyway 😁

I think this is a brilliant version, and so do Metallica. Different, yes. More poppy, yes. I do understand your wish of it being harder earlier. And ... that would also have worked. But I prefer it as they did it. Personally I think these girls are geniuses regarding composition and arrangement. They made this version in one week! Both arrangement and recording.
One comment though ... there is a music video of this, the one they made in one week, together with Alessia Cara. It is more consequent than the live footage. There you see and hear more of Alessia Cara. And you see the dynamics better and maybe understand the buildup better. A warning though, it is even more poppy. But I think that makes the buildup so much more sharp and evil.

No worries, if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. If you listen to the other covers on Metallica Blacklist album, of which this one is first on the album, you might agree that most of the other covers are pretty much note for note with a few stylistic changes. The Warning took their directions to Metallica to make it their own and this version completely re-imagines it and is one of the few truly unique covers on the album. Still, I hope you don't write off The Warning based on a cover. Their original music is much better than Metallica and is a fresh, Gen Z look at the Rock genre. Check out Evolve from their performance at the 2023 VMA awards. If you thought this performance was good, Evolve is levels higher and an amazing song.

1st and foremost: yes, the original riff is iconic ; on that front, it's basically the modern-day _Smoke on the Water_ .
HOWEVER, afaic, this slowed-down haunting atmosphere actually fits the *theme* of the song better than the original composition (i.e., how it _should've_ been done to begin with).
(personal bias alert: i have a quite complicated relationship with this song, and pretty much was already sick of it as of 25 years ago)
that being said ... to the people saying "just ask Metallica how _they_ liked it" -- it shouldn't have to be explained how/why that's a bit of a fallacious argument.

Maybe do better research on songs before inserting shoe in mouth. Metallica loved it and it is number 1 song on the blacklist album

in my opinion researching a song to then talk about it is a review not a reaction. I enter in completely blind to purposefully not let external factors sway my opinion. In this unique instance I do respect a lot what they have done. And its objectively good, i know that. its just that I do not like it that much. I know I am in the minority in that opinion.

@@zepreacts The thing is, Metallica asked them to do it that way. That makes a very big difference. They only had a week to do it all. They rewrote it had to include Alessia Cara in it and get someone to fly to Canada and record Her parts and then record it all. 1 week. Do yourself a favor and watch the MV of it.

Totally re-imagined version of this song...and most of us get that. Been a Metallica fan for Decades....this is better. So Sorry...😎😎...not sure what you are listening to. TW/DPA

Welp, if you don't like this version, that's your preference, but then I question your evaluation skills.

Gotta admit, a hairless Zep is a little disconcerting. But I'll get over it.

    Did you start another channel?
You already reacted to "Error" a while ago.

Yes! this is a new channel that focuses on reactions given that my other channel name is more associated with other content. This reaction series is to run through there current live performances as I had not seen anything really of them post 2020

You have the right to your opinion and I have the right to disagree. I think it is one of the best covers of a rock song.

Interesting take - to all the Warning fans and TWA members out there, remember that ART IS SUBJECTIVE. Its OK to not like something - keep it respectful.
I reckon you'll get a bit of flak for this one mate, but as much as I was dismayed by your comments (I am/was) - this is your opinion based on personal taste and I get that. DO NOT THINK OF THIS AS A COVER - rather consider it as a re-imagining, or Enter Sandman 2.0 if you will. The original was a form of lullaby with a hidden meaning around Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and has been mentioned a number in interviews with Hetfield. TW's version fits more into the lullaby theme as it's slower in parts (but quicker in others) and less violent (musically), and with the harmonies, almost ethereal in its tone and meaning. As an entry for Metallica's 30th anniversary of Metallica (the Black Album), The Blacklist (2021), the only instruction was to do anything they wanted except mess with the lyrics. Basically, TW reversed the song with the intro being the outro and vice-a-versa all the while respecting the song and Metallica.
Now onto you :) Stay Honest - maintain integrity. If you don't like something, say so and give valid reasons (no guitar solo is not a valid reason - TWA knows who I'm thinking about here) - this is my advice to anybody on anything that is subjective. You did that which is why I have no issue - you are respectful, again something I appreciate, and for a new reactor, taking on The Warning can be a task especially if you want to be honest (some fans can be vapid pests but most are like the girls - understanding)
    Cheers from OZ 🦘

Why don't you listen to the whole thing before you decide. My reaction to you is why is this guy so arrogant and joyless.
