Confession time. Many years ago, we were inbound at night to O'Hare in a DC-8. We were cleared to hold at Northbrook. Lots of holding going on...maybe a dozen aircraft. Instead of tuning 113.0 for Northbrook, I tuned 113.9 (O'Hare VOR). We were sitting in the hold for a minute or so, when ATC pops up and says, "Someone is holding over O'Hare". We grinned at each other across the cockpit, thinking, "Someone's in trouble". ATC had each of us ident in turn. Totally embarrassed when he said, "That's the one" on our ident. No deviation reported by ATC, but lesson learned: always identify a newly tuned station, even if you've done this a thousand times.
I always love stories from before all the digital everything and glass cockpits. Thanks for sharing!!
@@tomdaley9154 Are we related (same last name)?
@Ed-hz2um i doubt it lol ive never met anyone outside my immediate family that im related to lol
Figuring out the entry on paper is no problem at all for me. But visualizing them in the helicopter really kicks my butt. This is an awesome lesson. Im def a subscriber now. Love your teaching style man!
@@tomdaley9154 thank you! Let me know if any of my other instrument lessons help!
Great video, just learning holds and this was a great representation i could understand and put to use!
@@jimearl1701 I’m glad it helped! Let me know if the other instrument course videos help too! 😁
0:46 1:20 lol that’s how I was taught, and I get flustered switching between GPS/VLOC mode, brief the next approach, fly minute leg/intercept inbound leg, answer ATC. Thank You!!! 18:05
You are a terrific teacher. Also love your ties!
This was the best explanation of holds I've found so far on youtube. Great job!
I’ve been through so many videos on this as I have struggled with holds after just stating my instrument rating, this is by far the best video. Thanks so much for
Glad it helped!
Absolutely love your content. I too used to wonder why holding patterns were to the right and not the left. The answers I found stated that it is to the right due to the 'right of way rule' when encountering other aircraft. Essentially, if an aircraft in a holding pattern were to encounter another aircraft, they would turn to the right which also keeps them on the known protected side. A lefthanded hold is an exception due to obstacles or sound abatement.
Thanks for the comment! More to come soon!
Ty I watched so many videos of holding pattern non of them could not illustrated like you you are real instructor.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video,it helped me alot to understand these hold patterns
I’m glad it helped! Thanks for the comment!
This series is awesome!
Great video and very helpful. I had some confusion about the radials (to or from) but after watching it again I think you answered it for me, so I'll go and do some investigating with this new info on my own. If I'm still confused I'll ask, but thank you for the vid. Great content.
Of course! Let me know if you have any questions, I’d like to answer on my next aeronautic explainer video where I answer your questions! 😁
The best hold video I’ve watched yet thank you
