'Blackbird': The Beatles song inspired by the Little Rock Nine.
The inspiration for me to create this video being our granddaughter, Gemma (12), listening to her awe-inspiring rendition on her guitar at a concert organised by her music school, convinced me that this was one video that I simply had to do. I dedicate this video to our young Gemma.

When Sir Paul McCartney visited Little Rock, he told the crowd about how the civil rights movement and the Little Rock Nine inspired one of the Beatles' biggest hits
Paul McCartney wrote this song about the civil rights struggle for African Americans after reading about race riots in the US. He penned it in his kitchen in Scotland not long after an incident in Little Rock when the federal courts forced the racial desegregation of the Arkansas capital's school system.
"I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar and I'd heard about the civil rights troubles that were happening in the '60s in Alabama, Mississippi, and Little Rock in particular," he told GQ (Gentlemen's Quarterly). "I just thought it would be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might give them a little bit of hope. So, I wrote 'Blackbird.'"
Paul McCartney met two of the women who helped inspire the Beatles’ White Album classic ‘Blackbird’ backstage at his Little Rock, Arkansas concert Saturday night.
The women, Thelma Mothershed Wair and Elizabeth Eckford, were two members of the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine black students who faced discrimination and the lasting impact of segregation after enrolling in the all-white Little Rock Central High School in 1957, following the Supreme Court’s historic Brown vs. the Board of Education decision.
After the Little Rock Nine enrolled, Arkansas governor Orval Faubus protested their entrance into the school, which in turn sparked the Little Rock Crisis. It was these events that inspired a young McCartney to pen the song “Blackbird.”
The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrolment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In the famous photos of the event, one teenage girl can be clearly seen screaming at Eckford. That girl was Hazel Bryan. Bryan and Eckford became friends 40 years later when they both attended an anniversary commemoration event. They posed for a “reconciliation” poster together. The photograph was taken by Counts, the same photographer who took the original image. But by early 2000, their friendship ended. Their relationship was strained for other reasons, Eckford believed Bryan didn't own up to her past as well as she should have, and began to suspect she was too much of an attention-seeker. The two were never able to mend the tension and their friendship sadly went downhill.

This special video should probably be dedicated to Webmaster Doug's granddaughter, Gemma, who at her recent recital, played "Blackbird" on her guitar at her school where she studies-- much to the delight of her family. Unable to escape the song, it was only fitting that Doug would do it justice in a mini documentary. What an absolutely excellent tribute, Doug, to not only the singer, Neil, but to the momentous occasion that earmarked a decisive turn in civil rights and education that Paul McCarney and John Lennon immortalized in song over six decades ago. Your visuals of that first day of high school for nine black youth escorted by 1,000 Arkansas National Guard Troops set a precedence in true liberty for all in beginning desegregation in education for all people in the United States of America. The symbol of the blackbird overshadowing the photographs represent change, transformation, freedom, fearlessness, adaptability and intelligence as it "flies into the light of the cold black night" as day certainly follows night. 0:57 - Actual film footage of black students attempting to enter school of higher learning. 1:11 - "Take these broken wings and learn to fly" - A photo of ten young black people gathered together in a home (six standing, four seated) At 1:19 there are nine young black students assembled in a home and studying. 1:45 - "You were only waiting for this moment to be free" - the black bird image overshadows the photo of the nine black students. Continuing photos of the nine students followed by photos of protests and ending with the blackbird flying towards the bright light of change. "Into the light of the cold dark night." Protest and unrest follows and at 2:00 appears the black journalist who risked his life to cover the story of the "Little Rock Nine". Lucius Alexander Wilson, was an award winning Editor and General Manager of "The State Defender", an African/American newspaper published in Memphis, Tennessee. Beaten by the mob of protestors, he recovered from his brutal injuries but shortly succumbed in 1960 after rising to the position of Editor of "The Chicago Defender" as believed that injuries in 1957 were likely responsible for his early death at 51 years old. At 2:21 - "You were only waiting for this moment to arise" - The New York Times article whereby President Dwight D. Eisenhower (34th President of the United States) sent 1,000 Arkansas National Guardsmen to Little Rock to avoid anarchy. At 2:34 - "Take these sunken eyes and learn to see" - Photo of the students leaving school with books in hand and protection. "All your life you were only waiting for this moment to be free". 3:10 - 3:17 - Comparison photos of the nine students of 1957 and photos of today. 3:20 - 3:27 - Photo of nine statues of the students followed by the frontal photos of the nine students holding books. 3:28 - Photo of hate protestors. "Blackbird" (symbolizing evil). 3:57 - 4:09 "Into the light" -. Thelma Mothershed Wair A bright light appears with the blackbird flying toward it and at 4:09 if a photo of Neil with the blackbird on right.
4:10 - 34th United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953 - 1961). 4:15 - Paul McCartney meets two of the Little Rock Nine (Thelma Mothershed Wair and Elizabeth Eckford (2016). As noted, this story and the civil rights movement lead him to write "Blackbird" in the 1960's. 4:41 - 4:52 - Various gold coins to "The Little Rock Nine". First is the "Desegregation in Education" dated 2007, "Act of Congress 1998 with the names of the nine students who were escorted into the Little Rock Central High School in 1957 and the final commemoration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's "Enforcement of Desegregation of all the Nation's Schools" by Executive Order September 23, 1957 with the names of the students on the back encircling the coin and sharing with it is the 101St Airbornne Deployment with its emblem and the school in the center. Names of the courageous students are: 1. Ernest Green 2. Jefferson Thomas 3. Melba Pattillo Beals 4. Carlotta Wells/Lanier 5. Minnijean Brown Treckey 6. Thelma Mothershed Wair 7. Gloria Ray Karlmark 8. Elizabeth Eckford and 9. It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon-McCartney, and performed as a solo piece by McCartney. When discussing the song, McCartney has said that the lyrics were inspired by hearing the call of a blackbird in Rishikesh, India, and by racial tension in the Southern United States.

Congratulations and best wishes to her👏🏼👏🏼😊 It must be so rewarding for you all as a family. I feel impressed by guitar players - had a short go at learning it long ago when I was much younger. The teacher, a Jazz guitarist no longer in this world, was someone very well known in the city because of his genius playing. I didn't pursue it then. So now when I hear about people playing the guitar, I get all starry eyed😁

Thanks for your query Rowan. If you're enquiring as to when it was composed, Paul McCartney composed it in April 1968. Neil Diamond did this cover in 2010 (his Dreams album).
