  • When camping with our dog (Maddie), we especially like small islands that have only one campsite so that we can give Maddie a little freedom while keeping a close eye on her. On this trip Bartlett Island was ideal! Buck Island was larger with multiple campsites, so Maddie had less freedom there. For Maddie's gear, we pack a non-skid mat in the canoe, a life jacket, waterproof leash, water/food bowl, dog food and a frisbee or ball. Depending on overnight temperatures, we also bring a dog bed and small blanket for her to use inside our tent. Our first aid kit also includes items for pet care.
On day 1, we paddled from South Creek into Middle Saranac Lake and camped on Bartlett Island. That evening we made a leisurely trip up to Little Weller Pond and back. Day 2, we paddled from Middle Saranac Lake, through Weller Pond and took the carry / portage over to Upper Saranac Lake where we camped on Buck Island. Day 3, we paddled down Upper Saranac Lake, did Bartlett Carry over to Middle Saranac Lake, and returned to South Creek. Fantastic weather and amazing conditions on the lakes - especially day 2.
For this trip, Bartlett Island on Middle Saranac required advance reservations, but the Buck Island campsite on Lower Saranac is first-come-first-served - no reservations.
