Satanic Majesties Request is also a better psychedelic album than Sgt. Peppers... I said it. The Beatles did the concept of the album better (via the costume design and promotion), but as an album experience I far prefer the Stones take on the genre.

Now I am an unabashed Stones nut, but that song is part of the greatest rock and roll album ever made. 18 tracks, double LP, rock 'n' roll, blues, country, rhythm & blues, soul and even a bit of gospel in that album. EXILE ON MAIN ST baby.

the effect on Mick's vocals is pure room. This was recorded live to tape in a basement. There's no post processing. This is just what jamming in a room sounds like.

The Rolling Stones = The Only Band That Can Pull Off Every Style Convincingly In Their Own Way

  • @lathedauphinot6820

Keith Richards rented a huge house in the south of France. He and Mick Jagger tried to have a new song idea ready every day around 5:00 PM, when the rest of the band would be arrived and ready to play, then they’d go to the basement and play all night. The result was a beautiful mess: someone eating breakfast at the kitchen table while someone else sat next to him, with headphones on, laying down a guitar part, friends, dope dealers, famous musicians wandering around or asleep on the couch, and hours and hours of amazing music. This went on for 3 months or so, then they went to Los Angeles, whittled the whole thing down to an hour or so, cleaned it up some and added some backing vocals, and put it out, the most amazing mess you’ve ever heard, the greatest thing they ever did or could ever do. Country, acoustic blues, electric blues, rock & roll, undefinable,… the Stones at their Rollingest. Sooner or later you have to hear the whole thing start to finish.

Reds greens and blues are are all 60’s references to pills. The voice effect is a product of where they recorded the album. It was in a villa in France, they recorded most of it in the basement and hallways hence the echo. Glen and Andy johns were the engineers and world extensively with the stones. The producers was jimmy Miller who produced what is considered the stone’s greatest run of albums from beggars banquet to goats head soup. He also produced some of there non. Album singles like jumping jack flash and honky tone women

That's right, everyone on his TRIP or in orgy together in Nellcote until the French police came. Anyone who could and was present played, see the list of the many guest musicians. That's why these short songs seem so spontaneous, rough, and musically immature. Then basic tracks came into the Sunset Sound Rc. in LA and were revised and supplemented from December 1971 to March 1972, e.g. including Billy Preston, apparently primarily under the command of M.J.
Anyone who praises this album and especially the sound, should read the English Wikipedia what M.J. said about Exile 2003. You would be amazed, the total opposite. Or better: don't read it, it will spoil your innocent listening.

The producer/engineer/collaborator/drummer/6th-Stone, was Jimmy Miller, and he, indeed, was exactly the right guy at the right time. The combination of the Stones coming into their song-writing brilliance and Jimmy Miller "seeing" exactly who they were and knowing "how" to capture them on tape is a magical, perfect, mystery of the universe. Their 5-album run of masterpieces (Beggars Banguet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Mainstreet, and Goats Head Soup) is the output of that undefinable chemistry. It's the canon of Rock And Roll. The Bible that inspired or influenced almost everything in pop music that came later (even the bands that dont realize where the original vibe they are going for came from).

This song is one big jam session. Heads up the Rolling Stones are coming out with a new album they’re leading track is called Angry and I believe the album is coming out October 20th. There’s a video out for the new song you should check it out. They said in an interview that Charlie is on two of the songs playing drums because apparently they finished and recorded those two tracks back in 2019 when he was still alive. The rest of it is from the drummer that Charlie recommended to take his place, if anything should ever happen to him. I always said the Rolling Stones would rock til they drop! God bless them, and I am so grateful that they are still rocking and rolling. I plan on doing the same rocking with my kids and my grandchildren and making them promise to carry this music forward and I too will continue to go to concerts and play my guitar and rock till I drop.✌🏻🥰

As noted below, most of this album was recorded in Keith Richards' house in France. They had the band set up all over the house in different rooms, including a damp basement with dirt floors. The Stones built a mobile recording truck with tape machines and mixers that was parked outside the house and the intercoms in the truck didn't work so they'd be running back and forth from the truck to the house. Those sonics were the house itself. Really amazing! From that album, I'd suggest Rocks Off, Shine a Light, Soul Survivor and Torn and Frayed. Exile on Main Street is an amazing album!

Gram Parsons was a wealthy Trust Fund Kid, talented, who loved Country Music & Heroin. They had so many issues w the sound in the basement that they had to put Charlie Watts and the drum kit down at the end of a long hallway. The sound board was in the Stones mobile studio (the first of its kind) up in the driveway. At one point, most of Keith's guitars got stolen. He and his wife, Anita Pallenberg were hooked on smack at the time, so was Gram Parsons who came out to visit for a time till Mick insisted he beat it. Casino Boogie is another great under-the-radar track with Keith doing a great backing vocal. I went thru a period where I just listened to this album over and over for a couple months. I have a whole playlist of around 20 songs going back to the mid 60’s of the Stones doing country.

There is a great documentary about recording Exile at Keith's house in the south of France in the basement with a non stop party going on.

The Stones weren't into much Post editing effects, instead they chose places that gave them the ambient sound they needed. Having the world's first Mobile Recording rig, they were able to record anywhere they wanted. Exile on Main Street was named because they were in exile from paying the high tax rates in England so they escaped to France and took residence in country villa where recording equipment, instruments and mics were in every room and hallway of the house and used according to what Keith and Mick wanted for certain sound quality, and it worked.
What is cool about this album is that event these dudes are a HUGE part of the original British Invasion, their obsession influence with American blues made them a premier example of Classic Americana in music. Listening to this album you would think they were from the swamps of the south or something.

This is arguably the best Rolling Stones album and it's worth a deep dive. They explore many genres of music: blues, gospel, country, rock. It has the hits Tumbling Dice and Happy but it's full of lesser known but great songs. Rocks Off, All Down The Line, Torn and Frayed, Loving Cup, Soul Survivor, and Rip This Joint would all be good candidates for a reaction.

I used to play this one in a country rock band. People who dress in country garb have been known to be described as kickers and I always inferred the reference.

This is my favorite Stones album. Likely because it’s Mick Taylor heavy. You guys should react to the whole album.

Amazing!! Great track from Exile... this,.. gentlemen is just another reason these guys are who they are... The Greatest RocknRoll band of all time.... there are no voice filters going on here... this album was recorded at Keith's house in the south of France... they used different areas of the house to get different effects...for example.. Charlie would set his drums up in a different room on certain tracks etc etc... and to all who think Zep is a better RocknRoll band... keep in mind that Zep never was a RocknRoll band... they were a Hard Rock band as The Beatles were a Pop band... no disrespect to either Zep or the Beatles (both faves of mine as well)... but nobody could do RocknRoll like the Stones... nor still can't.... Exile is considered by many Music purists including myself as the greatest RocknRoll album of all time.... track after track simply Amazing.... dig into this one gents.. it's a must have for every library!!
