Honestly, the Workpro button lock is the best overall folding utility knife I have found so far. Its cheap and practical, with good action as well. The size and form factor is exactly what I would want to EDC it, fits anywhere and disappears in a pocket.
The OTacle UI is a really nice option as well and could be considered more as a primary carry tool based on its size and quality, but for me personally I don't like to primary carry a utility knife so its a little large for what I would want.

It really depends on what you need from a knife in the urban environment. As a defensive tool it does work and has been used by criminals in countries where you can’t carry a gun but need to intimidate your victim. The Stanley sliding box cutter was the preferred choice in the uk. But using for simple camp tasks it is perfect, you can cut cords, feather stick, do rosette cuts around sticks to break thicker wood. I’ve been able to carve a Mors “try stick” with one as good as if I used a SAK or small bushcraft knife. They’re cheap and if travelling by plane you can pick one up in country and bin it before you leave without crying over how much it cost.

Yes thanks! My thoughts were for EDC when travelling without check-in luggage. Thanks!

The Fastback 6 in 1 is still hard to beat, especially since it’s still only $20 at Home Depot for a pack with a bonus smaller FB. It’s a little bulky but feels good in the hand and has one of the better bottle openers. Unfortunately, the latest model has a collar that can slide off when using the bit, but can be remedied with some heat shrink.

I choose to carry these when I know that I'm going to deliberately do a lot of dirty, utility work. Especially to save on extra days of sharpening. With this said, however, they offer no defensive advantage. I like the Workpro for it's lightweight. I'm passing on the Civivi myself and sticking to a true knife in that price range.

      @urbanknifeguy  Місяць тому

Fair enough regarding getting a true knife based on that price range. Thanks for your thoughts

In the urban setting I use knives for tasks where such a razor utility blade wouldn't work: cut fruit, slice bread, smear butter, cut salami/cheese. For this I prefer to carry a simple folder or a pocket size fixed blade.
Examples: Victorinox Evolution S17, Fällkniven U2, Bark River Micro Canadian or Sanrenmu 7130.
But it might fit into my household toolbox ... but a really cheap carpet cutter would work too!

I've carried one at work for years. It's more knife than most people need to be honest.
Last couple its been the milwaukee fastback 7 in 1, such a great tool and before that it was a Stanley quickslide sport that had a utility blade and combo folding blade.
Interestingly here in the UK everyone refers to this generic type of knife as a "Stanley knife "

Thanks for sharing! Isn't a Stanley Knife more of a box cutter slide style knife.

have a look at the gerber prybird which has multiple functions on a utility knife such as a prybar, screw driver, bottle opener and such

For me I'll keep it symple the EAB lite is the one I go back to. It is small (so small I've lost it a few times). But it works from me. Not the one I go to for heavy duty "dirty" work but it is still my favorite.

I would not carry one as my main EDC blade but it could be used as a ‘sacrificial’ (don’t mind if you damage or lose it) backup.
No brand recommendations but I did have a look at those available at Home depot Canada last week.

I use the WorkPro but a version that looks more oval shape vs knife style. Getting tired of my reg knives getting gunked up from opening boxes. Use until dull or too gunked then flip. Blades are cheap & found everywhere. Save my folding knives for food, camping, clean fingernails. Not at same time.

  • @DanielDan-rg9zw

From what I saw, the civivi one is a bust, proprietary T7 screw, the screw loosens and the blade flies off when flipping it, not reliable at all!
On the other hand the Olight Otacle U1 is better and less expensive, you don't need additional tools to lock the blade, but you can use pliers to tighten it a bit more.

    • @urbanknifeguy
