This movie had one of the best soundtracks ever. One of my favorite Shaw brothers films.

It really caught me by surprise, that main theme in particular. What are some of your other favorite Shaw Bros films? I've been familiar with them for years but haven't seen many of their movies

@@TheFilmScorer One thing that really stands out about Five Shaolin Masters' theme is that it is an original piece. Here are a few of my favorites that also have good film scores to accompany them: Heroes Two (borrows a theme from a Japanese police show), New One Armed Swordsman (borrows some music from Akira Ifukube's Shinobi no Mono soundtrack), Delightful Forest (borrows from Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in West theme) Death Duel has some great climatic themes that play during the focal points of the film. The Shaw's were known for borrowing music from other films often. They also would use music from the DeWolf library too.

Ahh that's very interesting, thanks for sharing! I'd wondered how Yung Yu Chen had 200+ score credits over a decade and thought maybe they relied on licensed music. Makes sense! I'll have to check those out - I was a big martial arts fan as a kid, but never went much beyond the classics.

My favorite Shaw Brothers film and soundtrack. Theres many emotional concepts in the film that not alot of movies even today can build. One of my favorite scene is when they all went to rescue the young Shaolin brother from the Manchus. And how one of Shaolin leaders sacrificed himself for the others to escape, knowing that the Manchus had more skills and mens. This scene showed great emotions and brotherhood. One similar movie that had this concept was probably Ninja Turtles part 1. When they were escaping Aprils apartment during the fire.
This soundtrack reminds me of the Lonely Shepherd by Gheorge Zhamfir and some of Ennios Marricone. If anyone has the soundtrack please share it.

My favorite Shaw Brothers sound track is from The Kung Fu Instructor staring Ti Lung and Young Wang Yu (a lot of suspensful and intricate small orchestral music) and Shaolin Martial Arts directed also by Chang Cheh (as a kid I thought the music was so exhilarating coupled with the training sequences and of course so many of them die). Two other soundtracks I loved are special because they tie into plot like leit motives in Wagnerian opera: The Invincible One (not do invincible because he dies) and The Chinatown Kid. Both of these movies have the same plot but different settings and time periods.

Awesome, don't think I've heard of any of those so I'll be sure to check them out when I get a chance. Seems like there's a lot of good but essentially unknown music in these types of films

One thing I liked about kung fu movies when I was young, particularly Shaw Brothers, is that the hero frequently died.

The plot comes from historical folk lore. The burning of the Southern temple is in the Hung gar, Wing Chun and other styles mythos.

Thanks Frank, I'll try to check those out - your comment made me realize I haven't done a video review in a year and a half. I need to fix that!

I made a bunch of videos of snippets of Shaw Brothers music. They used DeWolfe extensively. The prequel to this (Made 2 years later!) Had a great snippet of music used during the beginning credits (and in a bunch of other movies) It was very ethnical sounding, maybe Greek. If you heard it, you know what I mean. Shaolin Martial Arts had great music during the training sequences. it is in my videos I made if you want to look for Shaw Brothers music. Be well and stay in good health!

Awesome, I'll have to check that out in your videos! I saw someone recently pulled the music out of all (or almost all) of the Shaw Brothers films and released them on UA-cam - so much great, undiscovered music in there

Also check out the Prodigal Boxer 2 or the Return of the Shaolin Boxer or the Enter Whirlwind Boxer. Alot of different names. Lol but its starring Fei Meng as the protagonist. Awesome soundtrack. No funny hero outfits. Not much studio backgrounds. Should check it out.

I'll definitely check that out, in one sense I regret not having discovered and learned more about Shaw Brothers/kung fu films and their music before making this video, but it kicked off an interest and has led a lot of people to give some great recommendations and insight. I remember I use to watch a fair amount when I was a kid, and when I finally saw this one I was similarly surprised at how emotional it was and how real the sacrifices felt.

That's a bummer, this is a bit old now and way before I really did much voice recording. Probably a lot of things I'd change if I could re-do it, whenever I get around to recording more at least I can fix it then

Any noteworthy acting? Any great directorial talent? Any cinematographic skill? Special effects breakthrough? Sound effects that sounds natural instead of outrageously asinine? Fight scenes that are exciting and plausible to real life fighting or just Chinese break dancing? Or just another Shaw Brothers garbage pandering to illiterate farmers?

Frankly I don't know enough about the genre to say (and I haven't seen the film in like 1.5 years so I don't remember specifics of a lot of those aspects), but it definitely has a better plot and characterization than I'm used to with those films. However, if you broadly don't like Shaw Brothers movies than I'd reckon you probably won't like this one much either
