Glad I have found this and to see a guy of your caliber and level work like that. I am in the process of upgrading my setup to a new machine with a heavy template. And because I have a very special lifestyle scenario, I do live and work fulltime in a campervan and all my equipment runs on solar power, the one PC approach is best for me. I could potentially run another slave as well but it for sure needs more power, creates more heat in the summer and takes up more space. Thanks. 🙋🏻‍♂️

There's an alternative: a VEP server locally. It's quicker than deactivated tracks in the DAW if you work on lots of queues that share many sample libraries.
So a mix of the 2 methods may be optimal: local VEP for bread & butter libraries & DAW deactivated tracks for the rest.
In addition, OPUS is so sophisticated with purging & loading samples that it may not even be necessary to deactivate tracks in the DAW for compatible libraries.

This "disable" trick is phenomenal really. You stop the nonsense Kontakt browsing, especially if something doesn't appear as a panel. Brilliant!

That's totally awesome! I've never tought about that way. In fact I had already gave up of making a huge orchestral /composition template. I use Reaper 6, and we call it "freeze track" instead of "disable" what's of course the same. I created a shortcut for this, as you did. I'm now making a really huge template, with assigned knobs and sliders. And it takes, literally, 5 seconds to load. You saved my day! Thank you very much!

Good video - Working in Reaper I´ve made the similar solution. When the big template is done, you just freeze the whole thing in one go (all the tracks), and set your quick short cut (like 1) that unfreeze in a second the instruments you need. The whole template opens within 3 seconds. Fast and steady as a rock. Best to you Trevor and many thanks for your generous attitude to newcomers and hobby composers!

Hi Tevor, thanks for this great insight about organising templates, and especially, on dealing with template 's evolution over time, I think you found something Genius here!
I was wondering now how all these tracks were routed?. How you would probably send them into buses, and how you would work things out to bounce everything for the mixer / or for maybe mixing yourself ... This is an important part of the process that can take so much time....
    Best from Paris.

Great video thank you. I'm about to start a new album and it's time to update the template. The only VEP I've used now is locally on my MacPro. Currently running Logic but also have had Cubase since version 1.0 (Cubase Score) back on Atari. LPX has disabled tracks now as well. The main difference is if you disable it keeps the samples loaded in RAM (I could see them updating that in a future version). My new template will go to 100% local/disabled. I may even flip back over to Cubase for this project.

Nice Trevor, thanks for sharing. I have basically the same, single rig setup as well now, much simpler, I feel better about it. I also have my Kontakt instruments purged. If you do a batch re-save of all the libraries once in a while you can significantly reduce the load time.
I've actually abandoned huge monolithic templates in favor of Pro Tools track presets. If I want a drum kit I just drag that in, if I want a string ensemble I drag that in. Keeps my sessions nice and clean.
I would love to see your reverb and stem routing. It's something I'm always second guessing.

How are you finding it's dealing with having that many instrument returns? I've been loading my different libraries into one instance per instrument and then running consolidated returns (1st Vlns Long, 1st Vlns Short, 1st Vlns Pizz, etc.) out of VE, but if the machine can handle having way more returns (disabled when not in use) it might be a good way to go.

Great video! I was working on locally loaded kontakt for long time, then I tried VEP. For obvious reasons it has its own benefits, but lack of flexibility kills workflow, which in my opinion is the most important part, so I switched back from VEP. I really like your approach, where disabling is the key to keep it big, but on the sleep, ready to go with right settings whenever you need any specific sound.
What about more modular way? I tend to use Cubase archives import quickly whole pallete of instruments ready to go, for instance some stuff specific for certain mood like dark dungeon etc, or the whole string section.
I also have question, do you divide mics for separate outputs in kontakt for spitfire stuff? It seems to be good to have more control over microphones for stems, but then simplicity of just one output and using mics controlled by midi instead, is tempting, especially if in one track we want to go from very far ambient sound to very close, automated across the cue.
Anyway, thanks for posting this one Trevor, big fan of your work here!

I've actually just begun to integrate VEP, so this is very relevant for me right now! I've been a Logic Pro user since 2009, and this year I decided to make the switch to Windows. Built myself a killer PC, chose Cubase as my new DAW, and I've begun crafting my template using VEP. This template is taking me sooooo long to put together, and all the while I've been thinking "this better be worth it."
So during the days that I'm spending setting up my template, I still have work coming in, so I need to be functional. So I made myself a "lite" template with locally loaded samples within Cubase... and I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time with VEP 😅
I really appreciate your insight here! I'm going to see how using VEP goes for a while, but it's great to know that I don't necessarily have to "conform".

Thank you very much for showing us your workflow! I was thinking.....perhaps instead of having the different kontakt instances deactivated, why not save them in a purged state? Your processor speeds should be able to cache the samples you are playing on the fly, and avoid you having to wait those pesky 4-5 secs =)
Maybe this will shave off waiting times....I definitely avoid them like the plague!
I'd love to know if you are able to test this and if it works for you. I currently run the kontakt instances purged inside Vienna, controlled by Digital Performer as the master brain, and doing this purged instances approach lets me load templates that are way out of my computer's league (a supped up mac mini)....
Anywho, thanks again for sharing! I look forward to more stuff!

I'm using a hybrid approach. Blank, generic VEP instances with a separate Kontakt instance for each MIDI channel (16*16=256 per instance). I enable/disable channels in VEP as I go along. I tried to have a fixed template but my latest projects were so diverse it became useless. Of course there are some challenges to my approach, namely track naming and bussing but I'm used to it. At least I have the routing ready so I just load patches and rename & colour the empty tracks. If I don't like the sound I press a button and it makes the track generic again.

Hey Trevor! Love this video. VERY curious to hear if you end up with a Mac Pro setup though that rivals your PC for performance and stability. I was VEP, then all local for awhile, then back to VEP....but all on Mac. Cubase on Mac, for me, is just really unstable, and while loading locally technically worked, it made stability and save times too much to deal with. But I'm gonna bite the bullet and just build a local template on my PC and see if stability improves. I have a feeling it will, based on what I read in the Cubase forums (and I imagine instability is not something you'd deal with).

  • @ArturoAlbero
    @ArturoAlbero 4 роки тому +1

How do you manage saving times? I mean, I used to use with my humble pc a template like that but it took forever to save (and it was pretty unstable if I had a full orchestra loaded). Then I switched to VEPro 7 and I use both Cubase and VEPro 7 locally, having the patches disabled in VEPro 7 and also having the instances decoupled. It saves almost instantly, which is pretty fine, but I also miss the flexibility of having all in just Cubase.

    • @TrevorMorrisComposer
      @TrevorMorrisComposer  4 роки тому

Saving isn't that bad, with full VEP slaves the "overhead" is there when you save whether your cue is solo piano or action. So now its only saving whats in your sequence. Small difference but works for me

Hi Trevor .. thanks for this .. this has really helped me build my current template and to understand how a constantly evolving template could be manageable. Just one question. If you have ended up "building" new things whilst working on a project and want to add them to your template, I assume you're just removing everything specific to the project (midi, automation, tempo, siganture etc) and then doing a save as template? Or did I miss something?

I keep VEP for the stuff that won't change (orchestral) AND, with a 256 buffer size in Cubase, I'm using different buffer multipliers for each section (piano and perc 0 = 256, WW and Brass 1 = 512 and strings 2 = 768). This way I can spread the load and have the best of two worlds: Cubase for the evolving template, and all the VEP stuff always ready but decoupled (0 lag time when saving!)!

Another great video, Trevor! As a long-time VEP devotee, I've just recently switched to this kind of a setup in both Cubase and Logic - Logic has a very nice setting that allows you to default to only loading the plugins required for the specific project. One question: it appears that you load only one instrument patch per instance of Kontakt; do you do this mainly to facilitate mixing directly in the template, or have you found an advantage in resource usage now that you've switched to using a single computer? Apologies if you've covered this elsewhere and I missed it. Thank you for your generosity!

    Hey Trevor,
    thanks for doing those videos!
I started a template like this but had to abort it when reaching around 600 tracks as every autosave (which i have set to 6 minutes) took over 40 seconds.
That grew bigger and bigger the more tracks i put in (most of them disabled) and was unbearable.
Must have been Cubase 9.5 or 10.
Did they change anything there, on which version did you switch to this approach?
The idea is good, but i lost too much time. My VEPro never crashes and is up in 15 minutes, so that is not a problem. Nonetheless i see benefits in tis method.
Thanks for any insight on this.
Those save times forced me to go back to a moderate VEPro based setup (on one machine, rarely use my slave anymore).

I’m about to embark on trying this out as I’m sick of having so many separate tracks in my template. Does it work well? I’ve got concerns about layering arts, how to have two legatos for divisi (I’m guessing a second instrument track with the second legato on it?). Love the idea of having less tracks and setting up my touch screen to select each art but it’s a sickening amount of time to plough into something if it doesn’t work well at the end! 😂

If you come across a cool sound during a project, and you want to integrate it into your template, you can save the track as a preset.

I.e as you mentioned here, you have to click on the activate button on/off every time to initiate your track!?! Why can’t they implement it automatically like in Logic? If there isn’t anything played or recorded on the tracks, then they remain un-active. The second you press your cursor on the track, it activates automatically. This is just one of the “illogic” things that prevent me from using the worlds best DAW :-(.
