Dude, I stumbled across this video while watching the more technical stuff you posted, so much good stuff here! I'm just a couple of years younger, maybe that's why it resonates. For me the solution (or the key, if you will) is sleep. And in order to get that I have had to make changes in my life. Since almost 2 years I don't drink (I know this would be unthinkable for you😊), my life is very disciplined, I have worked on being able to say no and being ok with some people not liking me. So for me the until 5am things have to be an exception, not a rule. And to be honest, now to that I work a little bit less but more focused, I definitely get better results - and that without burning out. Dr James Hollis talked about us having expections from outside for the first part of our lives (parents, teachers, bosses, partners etc.). And roughly for the second half it would ideally filling the expectations of the soul. Which doesn't mean it is easy, but at least it is for yourself. All the best for you, I'd love to meet one day!

Hey Trevor , Thanks to you and all the pros who gave their time, and Mucho Gracias for the template run through ! Great of you to organize this Master Class. One question, How do I get one of those touch screen controllers? Who makes it? Is it bassed on ICPro for Cubase, or ? If its cool I'd like to get the contact. Many thanks !

This is so true. TV Workflow is something else all together. I worked as a TV Director for almost 30 years and composed and played music as a hobby. But sometimes I composed little cues on the fly because I wouldn't use production music. Even searching for the right track in my vast database would take to long. TV shows are only final once they are on air. Hours before that they could be re-edited or remixed. I Spent an entire night to re-edit a show that was to air the next day, for legal reasons, and I had to fix the mix and music in the edit room just before tape was sent to the network. So I called my editor friend who had been a mixing engineer prior, not taking any chances. This was in the linear Digibeta era. Crazy times.

Most of the pro's on this channel learned their skills when there was no internet. There were no Google hangout, no Mix with the Masters or Masterclasses, no UA-cam. They learned it the hard way, on college and internships, hustling and lurking and assisting their butts off and now they are sharing their knowledge for free. Just think about that for a moment.

The technical term I think is ‘metric modulation’, where you use varying time signatures to change the tempo and beat without actually changing the tempo. And thank you so much Trevor for sharing all your wisdom and bringing such clarity and transparency to the entire film scoring process! As a hobbyist who is a fan of your work, this information and the people you share on your channel is pure gold! So cheers to you buddy and please keep it going!

Thank you for discussing your thoughts on this! I've been fiddling with a local VEP7/Cubase template for a while but haven't been able to get it to run smoothly and am returning to the setup you mentioned (all my VSTs inside Cubase, deactivated but ready to go with a click). Do all these deactivated VSTs result in lengthy save times for you? Or do they once you activate them?

I work in Reaper, and we have an option of exporting selected tracks (as they are), and export selected tracks via master - that way you can send all tracks through the same reverb (if it fits them of course) and not have bleeding of the other instruments (since each export is individual). Do you have anything like that in Cubase? If you do, that will obliviate the need for the "upper" row of stemming, wouldn't it?

Hi Trevor, nice QA! Do you find that you have CPU issues when holding all your instruments in Cubase? I notice with my own setup that I can hold many more instruments when hosting them in VEP. Thanks! [edit] Editing to add a thought I just had… another benefit of hosting everything in Cubase would be that you can work on the instrument track directly and not have to worry about handling the MIDI and audio tracks separately. That reason alone may be enough to get me off VEP 🤔

Hey Trevor, this series is fantastic. Thanks for creating it and bringing in the experts to share their experience and expertise. You may have already, as I have just begun exploring your channel after finding it by chance (luckily), but I would LOVE to have you walk around your studio there and show us all the hardware you have flashing alive in the background of all your videos, AND give some examples of HOW you use it in your work. I watch tons of videos from folks who have all this gear, and would love to get more insight into how it is used, how you came to have it, and how much you use it day-to-day. Thanks again!

It's so great to see this series with all these amazing tips from you, and other people in the industry. I really enjoyed watching your video about planning your day for composing as well. I'm still leaning balance myself, however I've recently started using timers to keep myself on track during the day. As I work in a small apartment that I share with my wife, it's easy to get distracted. It's helped me actually work the schedule and even be reasonably flexible with it if needed. All my best!

Great video and down to earth approach. But to me this is a recipe for burn out and overworking, nevermind any work life balance. I would never work for TV in those conditions. That's just playing into "we gotta do a whole episode in one week", aka recipe for a very bad show and overwork everyone in the chain.... I'm not sure if that's a US thing though, and things are more regulated in Europe, which I would expect.

Trevor, love your music and your content!! Not sure if you still do these videos, but if possible, I would love if you could discuss how you would recommend finding work as as an aspiring composer! Given there are so many avenues, sync licensing, selling game music packs, “cold reaching out” to music sups or game/tv development companies, UA-cam, etc… it’s a bit daunting to know what’s worth spending time on. I’m sure you’re very busy, and I know there’s not one right answer to this, but I would absolutely love your insight on this topic!
