    The HUMMINBIRD is set to MEGA PLUS with the new PLUS transducer. The Simrad is set to 800khz which has much better range than MEGA PLUS. This is why you see dark bars on the sides of the HB screen.

    • @boxyguy3681

      To be fair, you probably should have put the Humminbird to 800khz also if you were going to compare ranges.

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I'm just curious what kind of performance numbers you are getting out of the boat with the 350 on it?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому

      Brent Taylor I carry a giant load. We have 6 group 31 batteries 2 30 gallon wells 2 coolers and sometimes and additional 60 gallon Bait tank so my propping won’t meet everyone’s requirements. It’s not necessary a RACE motor. It’s a work horse. I’ve still not run it with just myself in it. It’s the largest production outboard available at 4.4 liters with the highest compression available at 12:1. The contra rotating props allow me to trim and jack higher than a single prop and steering and control are amazing, even in reverse. The economy is a bit better than the 250 Suzuki I had. 3.5 gal hr. Roughly. The cruising speed is way higher than I’ve had before at 40-45 mph.
      I'll tell you what the absolute most insane thing I see with this motor is. It's something that I have NEVER seen with any other motor.
      It's the ability to make near top speed while OVER loaded. This motor just doesn't care what you load on it. Torque like I didn't know was possible on a gas engine. It acts like my Cummins. If top end empty is around 55, it's 53 with 6 guys and full wells. I'm sure the high compression and large displacement is the reason.

      Brent Taylor The new 300 is a fine motor, but the compression is dialed way down. That’s where that torque lives. But you gotta run 92 octane or more. Are you specing a Sea Pro?

    Part of the reason you have “fall out” on the one unit is mega frequency with humminbird can’t read effectively past 75-80’. Need to drop the frequency to 800 and you would have matching screens.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 роки тому +1

      Yes ,you are correct, but this was Mega PLUS. It was supposed to have increased range. I set both units to their highest resolution. When the HB was in 800 it didn’t look very good compared to the Simrad. In fact the Simrad looked so much better that I couldn’t use the footage.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому +2

      My settings are pretty simple actually. I just shot a new video going over them, but the sound was gone for some reason. Totally GONE🤦🏻‍♂️. I will do another one.
      I will go over each setting in detail in the video, showing when I change things, etc. For now, here is a basic vanilla version.
      Leave everything in auto most of the time. I play with TVG and range the most. It allows you to reduce gain settings very CLOSE to the boat where the tiniest of particles can look HUGE since they “absorb so much power” so to speak. TVG at 0 leaves gain unaffected and 3 reduces it the most near the boat. On 3, the Image is the clearest but you are gonna miss Bait higher in the water column altogether so use it sparingly. I play with range a lot as well, it’s tough to explain in detail without a video, but you can increase it quite a bit, when you start to see darkness appear on the right and left edges, bring it back in once or twice plus 2 (using the on screen +- at the bottom).
      I’ll get that video up for you when weather improves some.

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks for the reply mike. Just watched your video on Chirp and noticed you were getting interference with the vertical lines. similar to what I get. you said it was due to running the transducers right next to one another. Yes I have a tm165 HW plugged to my evo 3 nss 9 along with an active image 3 in 1 mounted right next to it. both are plugged into the evo3. I have a tritoon 22 ft with a 150 honda outboard. It is mounted on the right side pontoon. I then have a total scan on the left side pontoon. hooked up to a go 5. I have run my transducer cables along side the right side under the side trim and amongst the other power cables run through the boat. Shouild I try and run the trans cables seperately and get them away from the electrical wiring to help squeeze out any interference. Especially when running up on plane at around 26 to 30 mph. when I am trolling around pictures are pretty good. When I am up on plane it gets real fuzzy like a snow storm. Would this be electrical interference or transducer needing to be moved up or down a little. any suggestions.

      3o5richierich I’m using Evo3 Displays and the Active Imaging Transducer 3 in 1. The 2 in 1 has side scan and down scan only. The 3 in 1 has high/med. CHIRP and 83/200khz 2D Sonar as well.
      The Evo3’s are the highest end displays where the Go series are an economical unit that has a lot of features, but is a much simpler display. The active imaging uses multiple elements. I believe it’s 3 to each side and 1 down. (It might be 2 down, but I forgot to be honest) The side beams are more like thinner ovals. The Active imaging transducer shows suspended fish beautifully. The other models I had did just ok with suspended fish. I have the Active imaging transducer link that I use in the description of the last few videos I did. Also, if you watch the video I just posted yesterday I show some good suspended side scan fish. The bottom unit is at 800 kHz and the top unit is at 1.25 + MegaHertz range. You're not supposed to see further with MegaHertz. The less Hertz you use the better your range becomes. Also you're using 2 different palettes, the bottom is the new #9 Yellow and the Top is amber. Also the bottom unit is at full screen vs the top screen that has the overlay bar on the left hand side, and a bigger info bar on the top.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

      Sure, but this was the MEGA PLUS TRANSDUCER. It was supposed to fix the range loss. Most of this video shows the range set quite close. It was only at 100ft in 27ft of water at one point. I often set my range much further. I set both units to their highest resolution. MEGA has great resolution but I honestly couldn’t tell a difference in resolution between MEGA and Simrad 800.

    Mike, I recently installed a 3 in 1 Active Imaging transducer on my Sea Pro 239 to use on the Simrad Evo3. I am totally blown away with the images I get with it except for one thing. I am running SI on 800 Meg. I am getting interference on SI only, & it is coming from a Humminbird Helix unit that I also use. I am running it on 455 Meg. I get no interference on the Helix unit at all from the Simrad. When I turn the Helix unit off or pause it the Simrad interference goes away. The transducer cables are run on opposite gunnels and are never close to each other. The transducers are installed on opposite sides of the transom. The interference is happening anytime the Helix unit is running. Is there any filters I can add to the Simrad to help with this? I have pictures of the screen but don’t know how to send them to you. Hope you can help with this. Thanks! Dwayne

    Mike, is it possible you could one day do a vid of active imaging on a rocky bottom with large boulders? Reason I ask is, not sure if you watch John Skinners vids but in his last video (posted yesterday) he’s using a hummingbird Helix unit sidescan and the detail of bottom with large boulders is mind blowing. Not sure if the simrad would produce the same detail? You’d obviously be the better judge of that. I’m still using the LSS2 transducer on my Go series unit and was going to pull the trigger on upgrading to the active imaging transducer. I’m looking for more bottom detail to pinpoint Tog spots here in the Long Island Sound.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому +1

      I don’t think I have any boulder footage with Active Imaging, I will definitely look for good spots to get you some footage. The detail and resolution with Active Imaging is off the charts brother. I just watched John’s video and the detail is pretty much the same,but Active Imaging has 3-4 times the range as the HB. I have some LSS2 and 3D side scan footage of rocky bottoms that look very good as well, but they weren’t on a Go series. The Go displays don’t nearly have the resolution and screen quality of an Evo3 or even and Evo2 so the Active Imaging transducer is a MUST for the Go displays. My buddy just upgraded from Total Scan to Active Imaging and cant stop talking about how much better it is. It truly is insane on my Evo3’s I can tell you that. This is the 3 in1 version, it has high and Medium CHIRP as well. amzn.to/2ErP9ug. If you upgrade you will be AMAZED at what you see!!!

      Very valid point. I would have if it was regular MEGA. It’s actually MEGA PLUS so it’s supposed to have extended range. The 800 wasn’t a lot better and resolution dropped quite a bit. 455 had better range but resolution was quite poor compared to the Simrad. I will compare them with both on 800 next.
      I wanted to compare them in the highest resolution.
      The HB does surprisingly well in less than 10 feet of water. It’s strange, it actually had more impressive range in 5 feet of water than in 30.

      No box needed Brother!!! Plugs directly to the display. Be sure to do the latest software update or it won’t work. You might want to keep the 3D hooked up too though. As of right now Active Imaging only lets you use 800 for down scan. So if you like 455 for downscan you’ll need the 3D Transducer. I don’t rely on down scan like I do side scan personally so it doesn’t bother me either way. 👍👍

      Mike Smedley I just talked to my certified Simrad tech who. Installed the SS60 and he’s saying that the 3-1 will interfere with the air mar SS60 that’s why he’s recommends the 2-1 and plugged into the second port on the evo3. Supposedly the only way to use a 3-1 is to pause the Airmar when switching. Too hi tech for me.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому

      The 60 is very old technology compared to the Active Imaging. Even though the 3 in 1 has inexpensive versions of CHIRP sonar it is miles ahead of the capabilities and performance of the 60. The only thing that the 60 has over the Active Imaging is the thru-hull installation. Don’t worry about pausing the 60, after you compare it to the Active Imaging you may never use it again.

    Mike, while using side scan in 20ft of water, and I see a target that "reads" 8ft from the boat, does this mean that the target's real distance from the boat is 12ft(20ft-8ft)?? I heard you have to account for depth when reading side scan distances?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, if it says 8 ft to the side it MEANS 8 ft from the transducer. So picture an 8 foot long string attached to the transducer and run to the mark. So, yes you have to deduct a certain amount of depth. Not ALL of the depth since the fish may be suspended, but most of the depth usually. Great question!

      I wanted to show both sonars at their respective “bests” this is HB and their brand new MEGA plus transducer. I think they came out with the PLUS because the range in MEGA was very limited compared to Simrad and Lowrance. This video shows that even with Mega PLUS the range can’t compete. When I set the HB to 800 it couldn’t hold a candle to Simrad in 800. My goal was not to show one brand up, but to set each in the best available settings in real fishing situations.

You reference the range difference in this video as well around the 4:30+ mark. But the one thing that you did not point out, or have set the same, is the KHz/MHz of the units. The lower the Hz, the further the range. The upper unit is running in the mega range while the lower unit is only at 800KHz. A more fair comparison would be to set both units at the same KHz/MHz.

      IRBent2 Valid point, HOWEVER, this was the new MEGA PLUS transducer from HB, which claims a very far range even when set to MEGA. This video shows that the MEGA plus range still falls a little short. Also, when setting the HB to 800khz it looked pretty bad next to the Simrad. In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
