In Taoism there is a saying 道不言寿, which means: age should not be asked to a Taoist. So the tour guides in the scenery zone would ask guests to be careful not to ask Taoist practisers’ age.
It doesn’t indicate that a Taoist, having eyes, is not willing to see. Rather, it simply reflects a Taoist’s attitude to age, to life. Just like a plant, it never worry about age; it grows naturally. An authentic Taoist thinks he is together with the Dao- he lives permanently!

Interesting concepts. I studied 4 different forms of karate plus krav Maga and akido. I stopped when i was 52 because of age and my body felt beat up. Early internal disability forced me to take my pension and retire from my career that i loved. Well, things were modest but okay financially and i moved to the country tp try and heal. I fought a non stop battle with declining health which depressed me to no end. Two years ago i took up Taoism, combined with Tai Ch. My life turned around almost overnight. I remarried, am riding a 8 hundred pound motorcycle long distance and for the past 6 months my blood work shows complete health. Diabetes which is supposedly incurable is completely gone, blood pressure normal, all internal damage gone. Im physically stronger then ive ever been and feel great. Before i took up the Tao and Tai chi i was hoping i would just die. Well, all these changes took place snd now i love life and feel better then i did when i was in my mid 30s. Ill be 71 in a week, i live in the moment devote service to Vets in the Vets home, found the love of my life. And pursue my hobbies. I live very simply and do not buy things i dont need. Its been Magic. I have no regrets. I finnally have peace in my life. On a recent tape you mentioned a decision between kung fu and Tai Chi. I advised Tai Chi. Lao tsu 2500 years ago wrote the perfect recipe book for living. It lays a great foundation for life. A house can be beautiful but if its built on weak earth with a poor foundation it will crumble, sort of what happened to me. Your Master is 50 you are 23. Your master is young enough to be my son. I even for the first time recognized the existence of my soul, without anyone talking about it. Tai Chi will make you a better Martial artist if you decide to add other martial arts. Thats my history and every word of it is true. Ill be 71 in 2 weeks and time has reversed itself. I no longer fear the future. Stick with it.

I have to say I'm happier now in my 50s than I was in my 20s. I've become so much more centered and at peace from doing a decade of samatha-vipassana. You're lucky to have found a practice like this at your age. I did a little meditation in high school but there wasn't the resources back then that we have today. The internet has really opened up the wisdom traditions of Taoism and Buddhism to the West. And case in point your channel has inspired me to take up Tai Chi again and to read the Tao Te Ching. Thanks for sharing your experience in China with us!

I built my hut within where others live,
But there is no noise of carriages and horses.
You ask how this is possible:
When the heart is distant, solitude comes.
I pluck chrysanthemums by the eastern fence
And see the distant southern mountains.
The mountain air is fresh at dusk.
    Flying birds return in flocks.
In these things there lies a great truth,
But when I try to express it, I cannot find the words.

I know this lady who's a couple years away from being 80. She strikes me as incredibly vital and healthy compared to so many others her age. And maybe not coincidentally: she practises Qigong alot and selfless charity, humour, singing, she uses nature and hiking a lot. She prays and believes in God, and that an angel is looking out for her. Obviously she has tough days, and seeing her friends die, and feeling her body age, but everytime I meet her, she is full of positivity (yet honesty of the hardships), encouragement and words of wisdom that she's enthusiastic to share with me. She says she'd not wish to be 40 again, because she enjoys her age and the way she is now!

George, I'm 70 and I can't even remember what it was like to be twenty three, but I can tell you that the road of life seems to have got smoother, the further I have gone down it. It's a bit like Shakespeare's "Seven ages of man", and I play all day, walk, ride my push bike or motorcycle, garden, camp or what ever else takes my fancy, AFTER I get up every morning and thank whoever is responsible for the circumstances in which I find myself. I have never been a saint, or even particularly good, but when tempted to moan about something I only need to return to a state of mindfulness and acceptance for a few moments to realise how lucky I am.

More people are successful in business in their fifties more than any other age. Some people retire at that age, but you are just getting "second breath" and a lot more inspiration coming together in your life, born from those previous decades of experience. Younger people may have more energy, but in your fifties you understand how things work better and how to get things done far more effectively. Many great authors only started to write at that age, drawing from the richness of far deeper experience, that they could never have had when they were younger. Many of us are far happier in our fifties because we know ourselves far better and can then make far more of life from being far more present in it.

While i studied several forms of martial arts in the past, they were hard on my body. Just 2 years ago, i took up Tai Chi which eventually led to Taoism. Ive thrown myself into it and now at 71 i feel better and stonger then in 25 years. Letting go of Judgement, ego, and anger work wonders for the health. I don't even believe that you have to deteriorate with age. Maybe I've become unrealistic but its a nice way to live life.

Master Gu’s reply To Ben Small y and all:
No! You said “ Taoism seems to make one lazy and in truth unresponsible” I would say: NO!
Daoism advocates无为而无不为or无为而治, which means by means of non-action one can realize action or to administrate by means of non-action.
Wuwei is a way, to realize is goal; wuwei is the state of mind, youwei is where to go; wuwei tells you to be relaxed, youwei tells you, with relaxation, to achieve what you want.
SO TAOISM DOES NOT MEAN TO LET PEOPLE BECOME LAZY. BUT, it makes you become active ,with relaxation , to achieve the goal!

Yeah, You are right, I don't know why people nowadays think that Taoism teaches us to become lazy. I have been practicing wu wei from few months and yeah I can feel the life because every action is natural, pure and selfless. Wu wei teaches us to do the actions effortlessly, with ease in mind like a dude and of course when there is ease in mind the mind feels peace.

Sweet video. For some of us it's too late to think about getting old - I am already. 1 day when I was about 55 I happened to look at my leg and it was wrinkled, my father's leg, then I looked around and there was only an infinite sea of eternity. How, i wondered, can something get old when it's formed from eternity?" So many theories and answers to that, but you know, it really still doesn't make any sense. At about 68 I spent a short 10 days in a darkroom. This one wasn't profound or mystical but rather a life review "What an incredible life I have lived" But since then things have gotten a little boring and last week getting on a bus fm the terminal to the plane, a young guy offered me his seat. "Oh my God I'm old." There is a current of Ananda/bliss that runs through everything, but the body is a little tired. So maybe at 72 I'll hobble into another China adventure. Tai Chi and qi gong. I wonder if Master Gu teaches/works with the middle and upper tan tiens? Maybe I'll find out. Such are my musings on age. Shanti

Aging is Art of Life for humans. I feel body is my best friend to listen to, because its feed-back's expressions aware me about my unbalanced and disharmony responses in life. We are indeed what we eat and what we think, into vibes, then with the help of the body I can make out when my mind is telling lies to heartself. We are not the body or the mind, we are soul, and they are our tools for the life on earth, better to learn how to use them with love and respect. I also feel that we can choose our own death, and WU WEI is a great medium to do it. I prepare it to be in consciousness and meditation state. That will be my this life accomplishment, to learn it is a great joy and more I age more simplicity becomes a powerful key in the process. My gratitude for your meaningful and nice videos, so much of beautiful energies, you and Master Gu shared with us. Yea I realized long ago that who says the "happiest" times of your life will peak mid-twenties and then decline.
Being happy comes from how you interpret the world afterall.
I've realized much more and have a completely different mindset now.
Discussing these mostly abstract subject in my case atleast so it would be a loong discussion.
I was once like you in many ways, been a seeker since I can remember... Had bad anxiety and depression no pills could fix(I later learned a way though)...
I like the east, taught myself Japanese during nights for 5 years not paying a dime..
Very interested in martial arts since forever and I was a "Nak Muay -Farang" (Muay-thai warrior, Farang means I'm a foreigner that's all) - for around 5-7 years, later an instructor of MT some years, Was head of the Martial Arts dept. at Budo-Fitness, Scandinavias largest chain in its niche (martial arts, supplements, fitness, weights etc you name it).
Also trained Silat a couple of years which I loved.
At this time in life I'm however almost fully living on "the inside" - and the normal world is connected but not as fulfilling and helpful.
Started when I decided to learn Hypnotherapy and NLP. I did self-meditation when I was 15 so wasn't brand new territory, this brought me to learning about and how to harness all the different qualities ones of breath, observing it, following it, mimicking it alot before I could truly BE the breath.
Throw my conciousness into it. realizing my body was physical and not "me" getting to know it happened during martial arts, but learning that my thoughts wasn't me either, nor my feelings - if you reside in your breath still, you'll notice both thoughts and feelings arise in the mind, coming like waves - and wherever I put my conciousness/fokus there energy will feed, transform, alot of things.
So a thought arises, "what's the time?" fex. If I stay in my breath after awhile it goes away.. Then another appears. Same thing with feelings, which made alot of difference knowing I am not my feelings, nor thoughts - or even the mind where they come and go like waves.
Your true self is rather outside that, observing the mind as a cinema sortof where my senses combined with feelings or thoughts creates a projection.
As you progress the thoughts and feelings lessen, the waves come less and are more tranquil.
After understanding we constantly define ourselves always with something, I'm a thaiboxer, I see a car, etc endless examples - but I know I am not the same as what's "out there" in the physical world.
Which were constantly labeling our identity falsely as being I. Using our intellect which is like a tool we dissect everything with into pieces, the result we see as truth and identifies as - again falsely.
Take away whatever is me + thing, at first I thought then I am the mind but as said it's just the cinema screen our results after dissection shows while I watch and think to be.
After alot of this thinking, finally I understood and embraced fully that the body feelings and thoughts are physical in nature unlike the true me being..metaphysical, beyond that.
The mind, and its residents thought and feeling is also physical - even if I can't see it I knew it while simultaneously also then knowing only I, me, the true self - is not physical, conciousness (not as in being awake).
I no longer lived by reacting to feelings or thoughts of people, things, myself etc - but observing them neutrally from the outside of it all and then decided if and how to act using intelligence.
Gone was bad moods, anger, jelaousy, envy, depression, etc since I chose not to go to those when popping up.
That I could easily be as or more happy in a rundown shed alone in the forest as in Belize on a yacht I owned surrounded by "happy times" - that I without learning this and how to put my will with the intellect could make any outwards situation wonderful, if I was so on the inside.
Then began my spiritual journey for real - as I was getting answers I knew were true, no longer identifying myself constantly with some subject from outside, reacting no more to feelings as I knew they' were not a product from me.
Actually what was "me", from the personality to clothing taste are all a product of past experience in your very much physical memory, not born with but created over time.
I then learned to silence my ego which was mind-blowing.
Everything needed Two pieces to function. Duality. Subsequently I began seeing it everywhere.
Hot, cold - without hot how can cold be cold? It would just be what is rather.
Positivity/negativity, everything needed two. And when I picked one I identified it with the "me".
Alone everything was seemingly nothing then I understood esoteric sayings like what we see is an illusion, I couldn't agree more.
So who am I, watching "me" reacting to feelings and thoughts?
I had to silence the me which only saw the dualistic view. The ego.
I learned and managed it eventually after an "aha" epiphany while reading Guatamas texts, some passage in the kanona, the Pâli I think it was so long ago.
Haha I slipped up there, announcing it would be alot text before and now I've written all this probably very confusing stuff. ^_^
So I'll stop myself now and come back either to edit, add more or delete :D
Appologies for this messy WOT again.
Stay true and good, belief is crucial - faith is not. Believers of faith have a choice though; to follow or be led.
So be your own master whether religious or not. ;)
Hails from a young descendant of pagans; a Swede at the age of 38. :P
(See what I did there, identified myself as four different things at once! While really knowing I'm neither.)
PS, It's abit like time & space. One cannot exist without the other and time we define only by having memory - if you had no memory you would not understand, feel or notice any past, present and future only the now which is eternal.
Appologies if I'm too incoherent - arriving as I am, where I am now took alot of time and effort.
I probably should refrain from trying to explain more, when it gets to the metaphysical no physical words can describe it afterall, only make endless insufficient metaphores, analogies and such.
I wish you the best on your journey, know atleast that if you like me was born with this feeling there's something more than we see and are told, a gnawing underlying feeling that doesn't fade - makes you a true seeker.
Buddhist zen & dzogzen monks, Rinpoches & llamas, Yogis all know what this means and will do their best to help and guide if you ever lose yourself along the way. Meeting is best, but books are far from dead ends and meaningless.
Seek truth, gather knowledge and experience then if the Nornes knots are tied right all unfolds as it should - its path is sometimes long sometimes short, this is determined by you but impossible to foresee and plan so better to learn to flow with the stream.
Learning how to access flowstate can be an incredible help along the way also.
And another WOT came out before realizing it was happening, sorry it's some weird thing I've always had, put a pen or a keyb in my hands and they just start and keep on going,, wrote 4-500 long handwritten novels and such from as long back I can remember..

How fortunate you are to be following the good path of " Dao " in such a young age. Had I known it earlier I wouldn't have made so many mistakes while on my 20s. I'm facing 40 now and it's quite scary. I feel more balanced now though. I like your videos very much by the way. Good luck and. .. Happy Birthday! !

That was interesting. I haven't had a watch for countless years, nor do i have a clock in my home, i just look in the sky & seasons are revealed in Trees, if need be there is always a computer. i know. i was never really anxious about ageing and the passage of life. but now, at 57 i feel truly relaxed about the finite span of life. i feel satisfied that eventually, i acquired what really mattered to me. understanding the nature of existence and life was more fulfilling than the othe r pursuits like job and education. now i feel equipped to deal with this wheel of life...this time or the next. taking pleasure in watching the change of seasons, and all beautiful elements in the world around, making little excursions into the world of egotistic desires, but always coming back home quickly, it is all going to be okay

I simply cannot say the amount that Tai Chi has given to me, in many ways, different aspects. It changes you. I studied Wing Chung Kuen Yuen Kay style. In my Sun 73 form of Tai Chi I get this sense of the root of all Kung-Fu styles. I train out the combat side as well....I was talking to a Karate Sensei, and he thinks martial arts need be hard, and physically strong to work. When he would punch with a strong karate stance, I could always step faster, absorb, and redirect before he could change posture. I have a 1st Degree Black belt in Free-Style TaeKwondo, and Tai Chi shows me how much wasted energy I've spent training that. Tai Chi is always Flowing, nNon ridgid, Strong. I think Tai Chi does bring out different aspects that fit us individually, and what we need to work on in all life.

    Getting older is inevitable
    Aging is optional
    One’s Beliefs and the behavior,
    That stems from those beliefs
    Is largely under one’s control
    How we get older
    Is dependent on, one’s attitude
    Not one’s genes!
Embrace one’s age, getting older is to increase one’s value
    And competence
    As we move through time!
Embrace life with passion and gratitude.

Happy birthday George 🎉 Live long and prosper.
Interesting topic. I'm having these realisation moments as well from time to time. I know age is just a number, but when I say it out loud it can creep on me (I'm turning 37 in a few months).
In my Kung Fu training I'm starting to give in on physical flexibility. It sometimes worries me when I realise that this will only get worse over time. But luckily my Kung Fu also teaches me mental flexibility. Listen to your body and adjust goals where needed. And life here and now.
Another fact is that I need more days to recover from an evening drinking beers with friends (and I'm still learning this the hard way) 😁
Time is moving forward and we're traveling along.

The passage of time doesn't change, only our natural perception. To a 4 year old a year is a long time because we compare it to our whole life: 1 year is 1/4th of our life. To a 12 year old it is 1/12th of our life. By the time we are 40 it is 1/40th of our life and time seems to be moving quicker. It's all relative and a matter of perception.
