- The motif is picked up again in militaristic style at the beginning of Imperial Attack, played alternately by French horns and strings over a rhythmic bass pulse. This is the first instance in the score where a melody is passed from section to section of the orchestra, a technique that occurs several times throughout the work with every major theme. The frenzied music for the shootout is actually an undeveloped version of the Imperial theme, and is followed by the return of the Rebel Fanfare, which builds to foreboding brass at the entrance of Darth Vader. in the scene where stolen Imperial technical data is stored into the memory banks of astro-droid R2-D2, themes for Ben Kenobi and Princess Leia Organa are introduced in succession, "I think of Ben Kenobi's theme as reflecting both him and also the Jedi Knights and the Old Republic that he remembers," comments Williams. "It also serves to represent the Force, the spiritual-philosophical belief of the Jedi Knights, and the Old Republic. Like the Princess' theme, it has a fairy tale aspect rather than a futuristic aspect. There is a lot of English horn in Ben's theme which is often heard under dialogue. At other times, the melody becomes the heroic march of the Jedi Knights." Princess Leia's theme is briefly restated her capture, and the Darth Vader (Imperial) theme is introduced fully when R2-D2 leads his interpreter counterpart C-3PO into an emergency escape pod. "Long ago, Darth Vader betrayed Ben Kenobi and the Jedi Knights," John Williams explains. "Now Vader represents the bad side of the Force. For his theme I use a lot of bassoons and muted trombones and other sorts of low sounds." After the launch of the escape pod, scored with a grand passage for strings and brass, the Princess is taken to Darth Vader, allowing nearly every section of the orchestra to play his theme in turn. The piece concludes with the introduction of the four-chord Death Star motif as the Imperial Star Destroyer pulls out of orbit over Tatooine. This indicates the warship's destination and musically identifies the major threat of the film. However, since the Death Star has not yet become a visual reality, the first statement of the motif fades away on an unresolved chord, setting the tone for the ensuing desert-based action
At exactly 2:00 cinema's greatest villain, possibly the greatest character ever makes his entrance into all of our lives. The rest is just history.

You can hear the beginnings of the Imperial March in this theme, but it's faltering: the bureaucracy is in charge and Vader is leashed. "Dum Dum da-da-da-Dum" and later "Dum da da-da-da" which would eventually mature into "Dum Dum Dum da-da-Dum da-da-Dum (Dee Dee Dee di-di-Dee di-di-Dee)

4:55-5:55 is a really good theme for the Empire. It sounds so dark and sinister. I'm disappointed that they never brought it back for any of the later movies, or in any later Star Wars media. It could've been used as Tarkin's theme for all his later appearances, but it instead got tossed into the "John Williams' Discarded Villain Themes" bin with Voldemort's original theme from the first two Harry Potter movies.
They use it once in Rogue One, when Vader is revealed in his bacta tank

Yeah this should be Tarkin's Theme. I hear this theme a good bit in Empire at War though, since it's in the imperial galactic conquest playlist.

@Bauglir100 Oh I agree absolutely, Imperial March is really good but we should really get a new version of this imperial theme since it hasn't even gotten that many new variants other than the aforementioned solo

There’s an anecdote from an interview with [score recording engineer] Eric Tomlinson about the methods used to record the original trilogy:
“John Williams and I had a gag. Where it says on the VU [Volume Unit] meters ‘VU’ he used to say ‘let’s have a bit of voo-voo land.’ Just get into the red to give it that edge, a little bit of crispness.”
LSO Principal Trumpeter Maurice Murphy (whose first recording gig with the orchestra was this score) gained a well-deserved reputation for being a real hot-rod of a trumpeter, and his playing style (LOUD!) combined with this recording technique by an analog-era master makes absolute magic here. Brass sounds bitchin’ on tape! 🤓

For whatever reason I associate this with the empire more than the Imperial March from Episode V... To me, this is the Empire's theme, Imperial March is Vader's theme.

If you’re paying attention at 2:20, when Leia is first introduced, you can hear a little auditory cue as to her relationship with Luke, as the Force theme (associated with Luke) plays and leads into her theme.
the force theme is actually more related to Obi-Wan as it was Originally Obi-Wans Theme and later used as the force theme. So this moment ties Leia and Obi-Wan together.

The small Tantive IV Crusier was now in Imperial Custody. Imperial troops had made it to the command room after a hard battle with Rebel Forces. After destroying a turret, Imperial Forces placed a charge on the door. After taking a deep breath, the captain began counting down from ten. Rebel Forces were waiting at the door. Ten seconds later the door exploded! The Stormtroopers bursted through. The Rebel Forces fought very well but were overwhelmed. The room was Smokey due to the explosion and in the mist , DARTH VADER emerged. Once Anakin Skywalker... All Rebel Forces In The ship were killed. Leia Organa, heiress to the wealthy Organa family and throne of Alderaan, has placed top secret Rebel info, the DEATH STAR Plans , Into R2-D2. After rounding a corner, R2 was reunited with C-3P0, his “ best friend “. Leia was tranquilized. Leia was taken in for questioning. With Vader’s outrage at an astonishing high, he crushed the airway of A Rebel Captain, Antilles. He crushed it with his hand. The two droids escaped in an escape pod onto the dead planet of Tatooine. Leia was doin brought on to the station which the top secret information regarded , the DEATH STAR...
Even though this is the very first track played in the movies outside the title I can't help but Think of Dark Forces at the beginning.
