Star Wars: A New Hope Soundtrack - 10. The Battle Of Yavin

  • The Battle of Yavin consists of three sections. The first, Launch from the Fourth Moon, begins with soaring strings and leads into a militaristic procession of horns, strings, and percussion accompanying the Rebel X-wing and Y-wing snub fighters as they lift off from the base. The score's final statement of the Death Star motif is heard as the fighters pass through the battle station's magnetic field. A crescendo is reached, and X-Wings Draw Fire takes over with a trumpet fanfare of Ben's theme which leads into a rhythmic rendition of same. A short sequence with Vader features his theme. The trumpets return to dominate a section That Williams calls "a lot of difficult but very exciting battle music." Eventually, the music finds its way back to Ben's theme as the X-wings engage attacking TIE fighters. Another fanfare marks the beginning of Use the Force, the pace quickening as Luke leads an attack run down the trench towards the exhaust port target. The Imperial theme makes one final appearance in the score, but Williams refrains from using Luke's theme until he is alone in the trench with Vader on his tail. The tension mounts, when suddenly, a soaring version of Ben's theme appears out of nowhere (along with the old Jedi's voice). Heeding his mentor, Luke switches off his target computer as his own theme resumes. A timpani solo is followed by Luke's theme in a diminished key as the Fourth Moon of Yavin comes within firing range of the Death Star and Luke's time runs out. Rhythmic pulses enter as Han Solo knocks the TIE fighters out of the fight, sending Vader spinning out of control. Luke fires, meets his target, and flies clear. A crash of timpani marks the eruption of the Death Star in a huge fireball, and as the survivors fly towards Yavin, their victory is announced by a glorious flourish of strings and the Rebel Fanfare.

      one of my favorite exchanges is the full battle of hoth snowspeeder comlinks. "Ive got no approach vector, I'm not set." hobbie ya still with me.... then later "steady rogue two" ... " Good Shot janson" ugh seeing that whole scene play out at like 10 years old was the greatest moment in my life.

      I like to imagine seeing it from Vaders perspective, you're kicking ass, then all of a sudden your fighter is hit hard by another ship and spins out; the death star, Tarkin, and everyone you were just with are now spinning violently, the emergency lights are going off in your cockpit and you hear your squad burn to death over the comms. It dawns on you that you've just lost. Then all at once - everything becomes blinding white and explodes into oblivion with a nuclear rumble, and you're left adrift in space with nothing but your own thoughts, the sole survivor.

    7:23 is where the magic starts for me. The rebel base is now in the Death Star's firing range, one single strike, and the galaxy's hope for freedom dies. Our only hope is riding on a farm boy on the battlefield, and now he's the only remaining fighter, but in hot pursuit by our big bad. Vader's target computer locks on, "I have you now!" That's it, Luke's done, Vader has-,
    Wait? What?
    The scoundrel smuggler came back! He actually came back to help us! Vader is out of the way now, but the big threat is still present. Luke fires, the blast goes down the shaft! Direct hit!
    But can the blast make it? The Death Star is seconds away from firing, something is about to explode, but what? The Death Star, or the rebel base?
    BOOM!
    The Empire's ultimate weapon is destroyed! The Rebels are saved! Confidence against the empire is now in the hearts in the Galaxy, and it's all thanks to a farm boy, a smuggler, a wookie, two droids, a crazy old man, and a beautiful princess.

      Actually, the plan was for the Y-wings to make the trench run first, as they're bombers and more suited to that role, while the X-wings kept the turbolasers and fighters busy, as their greater speed made them more suitable for that purpose. Remember, Red Leader says "I'm gonna cut across their axis and try and draw their fire." Of course, all but one of the Y-wings were destroyed, so the X-wings took over the bombing runs.

    • @sup209
      @sup209 8 років тому +24

      class87fan Exactly, the y-wings were more intended for bombing runs, and that's why they went in the trench first. The X-wings were only backup.

In fact, I listened to it so much that I know how the *entire thing* goes from beginning to end by memory. Nearly a decade later and I still am not tired of this piece. It's pretty much nine minutes of John Williams at his best. There's not a single part of this that doesn't get me pumped. Easily my favorite battle music across the entire series.

    Love how Williams incorporates both the empire score and the tattooine score into one great piece of music. Star Wars would still be enjoyable without the music, but IMO the music is what sells it. The timing and tone really sets the mood and draws you in to the story. Take this piece for example, you can hear the building desperation, the fear and determination of the pilots as they face a near impossible task. Then when it is over the seer relief not necessarily at victory, but simply at having survived.

    6:49 to 8:30 was probably one of the greatest moments of my entire childhood. When I first saw this movie in '97 on VHS when I was five years old, my mind melted. The Star Wars series has continued to be one of my favorites and Episode IV as a standalone movie has remained in my top three favorite movies I've ever watched period.

    I am a school music teacher and this piece is one of the finest examples available of popular 'high' music for teaching myriad aspects of musical theory and aesthetics, particularly the last 5 minutes, which are a lesson in how variations on and the multiple interplay of leitmotifs bring transcendence to this scene (and the film as a whole). My students hate me because I make them watch the scene with just images and score (no sound effects or dialogue), but I think they begrudgingly get my point when they finally realize how much of the emotional and spiritual energy of the scene is carried by the music. Of course, a million hats off to George, Marcia, Richard, Paul, Ben (Burtt, that is) and John (yes, Dykstra) among the several others who created this cinematic moment, but without this music...well, I'll let you fill in the blanks.
    I have never understood the ignorance of some critics (esp. during he mid to late 80s when Star Wars was - believe it or not - somewhat out of style!) who dismissed this genre of composition as 'Romantic' and 'Wagnerian' - well, friggin' duh!!!!! That's the whole point: Williams knew exactly what he was doing when he composed this (consider the markedly different style of his 'Close Encounters' score from the same year) and has said as much (his musical knowledge is vast, whether or not you care for his style; he deliberately references Elgar in the throne room procession music [the original liner notes from the 1977 release have him saying he was aiming for a 'Land of Hope and Glory' sound] as he cannily - but tenderly - references Vaughn-Williams in 'War Horse' and 'Copland' in 'Lincoln'). People forget that way back in the day he also composed for Robert Altman's "Images" - a weird mix of of Baroque classicism and avant garden percussion, and for Altman's "The Long Goodbye" in which a single jazz standard melody is used over and over again in multiple genres (and is even referenced sarcastically in the dialogue of one scene).
    Ah, well, I've pontificated enough - thanks for the detailed outline accompanying the post. For others who are interested in older J.W. stuff and its intelligence, check out the 'Fortress of Solitude' music for "Superman" (1978), another masterclass in the interweaving of motifs - only this time it is three different motives representing a single person that collide and mix as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman fuse into one...or do they?
