Not sure if this would work for you but I number all my half pans and then keep a log of what is in each numbered pan. I actually keep the log in a spreadsheet in Dropbox and add the colours I want next. That way, if I find myself in an art store, I get what I want and don't buy anything I already have.
That’s something I should do. I have some cheep tubes atm but they are surprisingly fairly good but I wanna get more water colours and make a palette one day. I like the way you log everything you have it sounds like it would be helpful
@@MsCooljoshi haha I just saw this. Sorry for the delay! When I buy a tube, I put some in an empty numbered pan and paint it onto a little postage stamp sized piece of watercolour paper. I cut batches of them from a sheet of paper. I write the pan number on the back of the paper sample. Then I enter into a spreadsheet, the date, pigment info, pan number, colour name, brand name, etc. I store the spreadsheet in the cloud so that when I’m shopping, I can see what I already have. I can sort the spreadsheet by brand, pan number, date or whatever I want. When I put a palette together for something specific, I dump all my little painted samples out of their ziplock bag, arrange them roughly into a colour wheel and choose the ones I want to use. Then I grab those pans from out of their “home” palette and pop them into a temporary one.
I loved seeing you get you colors all organized. Also I got a tube wringer on Amazon for about $7 and I was shocked at how much more paint you can get out of a tube that looks empty.
Hi Jess! New to the channel so I apologize if someone else has already addressed this, but just an FYI on inserting the pans. If you start on the other shorter, fixed side of the metal holder and then click it down into the long flexible piece of metal, the pans will be much more secure and not move around as much :) Happy painting!
In Liquid Color I just followed! Cannot wait to dig into your videos this weekend, yum 🍬 Thanks for saying hello by the way, I love meeting fellow watercolorists and illustrators on UA-cam!
Not sure if anyone else has said this yet, if you pinch the little metal flap down just a little before you put the pan in, it helps keep the pans from jiggling around so much. Lindsey (the frugal crafter) talked about it in one of her videos and it has saved a lot of my pans from falling out of place! :)
As I was setting up my palette I first made this colour chart and put the colour names and brands on there, because I don`t want to write on my pans in case the colour gets empty and I`m going to replace it with another one. But that`s just my way. I`ve seen a lot writing on the pans. Your colours look really nice. As I was watching you I had the feeling you really like the colour red.
firecloud yes, I wrote on the pans because I have extras and also because I take them out a lot for photography and they get re-ordered. Ps. Maybe it seems like I like red bc of my nails ☺️
Oh my gosh, you MUST label the pans before you fill them!!!! I recently had a DISASTER while setting up a new palette with some paints I'd never used before.... The container I had them resting in while drying got knocked over and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM landed on the ground, face-down.... Despite having magnets on them and being in a metal box. =;_;= I was so distraught. Thank goodness they were all labelled! Happy to see I'm not the only one who's absolutely completely stingy with watercolors and digs out every last drop from a dried tube. =>.
I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but thought I'd chime in anyway. Those empty, metal palettes are designed to fit full pans, as well. Sure you'll have fewer pans, but the 1/2 pans are murder on your brushes. I use a mix of both full and 1/2 pans. in my metal palette according to which colors I use most often. Thanks, you vid was most helpful.
What I find that works for me is to label the swatches. Because I’m kinda messy with paints, I also laminated my swatches. Also, to make your swatches look prettier and more convenient, make a grid that mimics the size and shape of the pans and do a gradient with one little stripe of the paint layered so you can see how it lays down better.
I "accidentally" bought an empty palette for watercolor pans, and just bought a "cheap" watercolour tubes from LIDL!!! So, that I have an excuse to be able to do this!!! Thanks, friend, for the idea!!!
I love the Crelando ones. I mean, they are by no means great watercolors, but they have a special place in my hard, cource i have started out with them and still take them everywhere, despite there beat up tin.
I write down the color names on a card chocolate box style next to swatches corresponding to their position in the palette, then laminate or, well, in my case, wrap the card in clear packing tape. I can never read my own sharpie writing - plus any excuse to swatch is a good one in my book. Admittedly, it means I have to make a new card every time I adjust my palette.
This is so awesome!! I started watercolor painting again (I took a class 14 years ago and still have the tubes-they look a lot like your Nana’s!!) with my inefficient round big well palettes and I just ordered an empty palette! Thank you so much for those great tips that we shouldn’t skip over!!❤️
Hi Jess! I love your videos and your editing style. Can you please make a video about watercolor for beginners? The materials you use etc. This one was super helpful!
Cute Treats hey there and thank you! So happy to know it was helpful. I definitely have a video of favorite supplies on my list and I will add one on watercolor for beginners as well! Great suggestions, and so wonderful to have you watching 🤓👍
I’ve seen this video before. But I saw the thumbnail again today and had to rewatch. Jess I love your whole vibe this was such a pleasure to rewatch. It’s so relaxing and satisfying.
Your video made me extremely happy!! :^) I have just learned that I don't really need to worry about my dried-up watercolour tubes.. Cut the tube, peel dry paint, stuff it in a pan.. done!!
This was such a helpful video. I’m new to watercolor and didn’t have any idea of how to begin.... where better than with an amazing custom pallet. Thanks.
Not only is your video informative, it's also very calming to watch. I love organizing things! Btw, your voice sort of reminds me of Winona Ryder's voice. Love it. 😁
Hey Jess! I really like seeing other Illustrators doing such basic stuff, like organizing your color palette. I just finished art college in Germany and want to be an Illustrator as well :) Hope to see more of your "basic" tipps and work stuff! Greetings from Germany ~
Claudia M. Hey Claudia! I love watching these types of videos as well, I am going to try to make some more of them. Let me know how things are going on your journey, I lived in Munich when I was young and I adore the German vibe! Much love from Austin 😘
Hi Jess, great video as usual, I just put up my first UA-cam video and listed you as one of my inspirations in the video. Your tips are always helpful and like the calmness in your voice it's very soothing. Thank you for being you.
Antony Michael Pugh that's awesome thank you so much! I just popped over to your channel but I don't see the video, so link me up, I'd love to watch it! 😎
Hi I'm a newbie... but I was wondering if the water color paint stays wet or if it dries out in the palette. If it dries out... how do you use it? Do you add water and it goes back to normal???
Jade Clanton hey there, welcome! Yes that is exactly how watercolors work. They're "activated" by water, so they dry in the half pans and then you wet your brush and they become paintable again 👍 if you have any other q's about them don't hesitate to ask!
Baby Girlie You could mix them with a TINY amount of glycerine or honey to make them more wet and easier to reactivate. There are several vídeos here on youtube on the subject.
I heard that watercolor that comes in a tube loose some of its qualities if you let it dry out. Is it that true? And if it is, why some people just squeeze them like that? I whatched a lot of videos that sayed that is "dangerous" to the paint and others that didn't say these sort of things. As you can see, i'm VERY confused. It seems, according to Weedus, that it depends from paint to paint. Is it that correct?
Amazing video but hav you mixed artist quality tubes and and studet tubes in the same set? I couldnt realy see the brands. i taught my neice years ago to cut open her dried out tubes (she was just throwing them out😳) its so satisfying to make your own pans i think
christian taylor oh I just mixed em all ~ but I'm not really a purist when it comes to these things 🤓 truly sooooo satisfying to make your own pans, totally agree!
*warning* if you don't you use your tubed watercolors for awhile after putting them in the pans they do start crack and look like a dry desert. It doesn't affect the color or use that I know of though.
It's super strange how they don't show what pigments are in the paints, even on their own color charts, I though they might have been interesting but now I won't buy them.
Your nails may be unpractical, but oh my, they are just faboulus! Love them :D And thank you so much for this! I have actually been wanting to do this for the longest of time, I too have tubed colours, and it is such a hustle starting painting! I will tanke your advice and buy some pans, It looks so much fun :D
Studio Jess I know! I waste so much paint because of it, so I actually bought a set of half pans and a tin a few minutes after writing that coment! I am looking forward to getting them in the mail :D keep doing your amazing job!
All my watercolour tubes are the same brand, and my pans are inset in my palette so I can’t label anything, but if i get an actual palette specific for watercolour (and decent watercolour) then I will. Either way I really enjoyed the video 😊
First off your nails are super mesmerizing LOL so beautiful! Secondly I really loved all the colors in your palette! Do you have a list/roundup of all the colors in it with the swatches next to them? I'm about to hit up the store soon for some fun new watercolor paint additions to my collection haha
When you put your watercolours in the little half box do you let them dry (maybe freeze them) and then put them into the palette box? Because I really want to do this myself.
What are the best basic 8-16 watercolors that you would put in a simple palette? I know that you need your primaries to mix and get other colors... What color going from must have to like to have would you recommend?
Hi! While you were filming this, how did you get all the different angles? One angle is above, facing you, etc? Did you have multiple cameras or did you move them?
Great video! Very helpful. Would it be the same process for gouache? I've also heard that you should do two layers of filling the pan, letting the first layer dry before adding the second. Is that completely necessary?
Newbie here with a question I just received all my materials and I set up my palette but how long does it take for the paint to actually dry in the half pans ? I left them out over night and there still fresh
Not sure if this would work for you but I number all my half pans and then keep a log of what is in each numbered pan. I actually keep the log in a spreadsheet in Dropbox and add the colours I want next. That way, if I find myself in an art store, I get what I want and don't buy anything I already have.
Wendy Norman that genius
That’s something I should do. I have some cheep tubes atm but they are surprisingly fairly good but I wanna get more water colours and make a palette one day. I like the way you log everything you have it sounds like it would be helpful
Can you show us how you did it.... It's not clear here
Genius!! What a great idea - I am going to do this today.
@@MsCooljoshi haha I just saw this. Sorry for the delay! When I buy a tube, I put some in an empty numbered pan and paint it onto a little postage stamp sized piece of watercolour paper. Girl. Your nails. Your nails and your voice.
Lyndsey Coyle haha thank you 🙌 I can't have my long nails anymore bc I started rock climbing and I miss them sooooo much 🤓
I loved seeing you get you colors all organized. Also I got a tube wringer on Amazon for about $7 and I was shocked at how much more paint you can get out of a tube that looks empty.
Dionne C that's a great idea I will definitely go that route when I need more paints, love it :)
These are the frugal tips I live for, I owe you my life now
Great idea!!
Hi Jess! New to the channel so I apologize if someone else has already addressed this, but just an FYI on inserting the pans. If you start on the other shorter, fixed side of the metal holder and then click it down into the long flexible piece of metal, the pans will be much more secure and not move around as much :) Happy painting!
In Liquid Color hello, welcome! Thanks for the tip (and no, no one's mentioned that yet :) very good to know, they do move around quite a bit 🤓
Thanks! I have a couple of Schmincke videos with a visual if that would be more helpful. Love your videos - especially the penguins :)
In Liquid Color I just followed! Cannot wait to dig into your videos this weekend, yum 🍬 Thanks for saying hello by the way, I love meeting fellow watercolorists and illustrators on UA-cam!
Studio Jess thanks so much Jess! I'm subbed to you as well and look forward to seeing more of yours too :) have a great weekend!
The tip about cutting open the dried out tubes is great, I don't know why it never occured to me to do that, thanks a bunch!
Not sure if anyone else has said this yet, if you pinch the little metal flap down just a little before you put the pan in, it helps keep the pans from jiggling around so much. Lindsey (the frugal crafter) talked about it in one of her videos and it has saved a lot of my pans from falling out of place! :)
Taylor Young oooh great tip. do you remember which video?
As I was setting up my palette I first made this colour chart and put the colour names and brands on there, because I don`t want to write on my pans in case the colour gets empty and I`m going to replace it with another one.
But that`s just my way. I`ve seen a lot writing on the pans.
Your colours look really nice. As I was watching you I had the feeling you really like the colour red.
firecloud yes, I wrote on the pans because I have extras and also because I take them out a lot for photography and they get re-ordered.
Ps. Maybe it seems like I like red bc of my nails ☺️
firecloud If you write it with sharpie, you can get rid of it with rubbing alcohol.
you can write it on masking tape so if you want to change the color then you can peel off the tape and write the new color name on it. Happy Painting!
Meow Meow Kapow this hurts to read..... qwq
I mean they are expensive 😅 so I too do the same..
Meow Meow Kapow I cringed reading this, I remember when I dropped my watercolors I screamed
Thank goodness i have tight grip!
Meow Meow Kapow :)
Your Nan had a great selection of colors, swatch sheet is beautiful!
I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but thought I'd chime in anyway. Those empty, metal palettes are designed to fit full pans, as well. You see, that's what I like about watercolours. No matter how old and dried up it gets, water could always revive it.
I "accidentally" bought an empty palette for watercolor pans, and just bought a "cheap" watercolour tubes from LIDL!!! So, that I have an excuse to be able to do this!!! Thanks, friend, for the idea!!!
Apropos, you must've enjoyed it!
RE ABERILLA fabulous, have fun with it 🙌
Are the paints from the Crelando brand? Did it work because i just setted up a palette with em'
I love the Crelando ones. I mean, they are by no means great watercolors, but they have a special place in my hard, cource i have started out with them and still take them everywhere, despite there beat up tin.

I just bought a half pan palette after seeing this and gonna fill it with my gouache paints! Can't wait. Also this was so therapeutic to watch!

I’ve seen this video before. But I saw the thumbnail again today and had to rewatch. Jess I love your whole vibe this was such a pleasure to rewatch. It’s so relaxing and satisfying.
I didn't label mine at all. I was just so excited I just squished them in....and somehow did some duplicates too.
the turquoise and cyan look so pretty
Your video made me extremely happy!! :^)
I have just learned that I don't really need to worry about my dried-up watercolour tubes..
Cut the tube, peel dry paint, stuff it in a pan.. done!!
This was such a helpful video. I’m new to watercolor and didn’t have any idea of how to begin.... where better than with an amazing custom pallet. Thanks.
That's a great idea! I also have some old dry tubes from my grand mother, I might also use them, now that I know that I can!! Thanks!
Not only is your video informative, it's also very calming to watch. I love organizing things! Btw, your voice sort of reminds me of Winona Ryder's voice. Love it. 😁

This video is so soft and satisfying. I recently ordered watercolour supplies, so this video is a good tutorial on what to do.
I don't know why it is SOOOOO satisfying other than doing it myself to just look at someone else do this too :D
Just came across your videos trying to decide between watercolour pans or tubes! I paint with mostly acrylic but wanna try new paints!
Aww , I call my grandma “nana” too ❤️
My moms mom also. Yes, all of us cousins called her that!!
this is so soothing ,paradise
This was so relaxing to watch.
Your videos are so beautifully presented. Very relaxing, yet interesting
I cant believe shes doing all this with those nails omg
nails are amazing tools, and if you know how to use them, even better
Very useful! The tip of cutting the tubes is great! 🙌 I would never had realised!
for smaller palletes, u can use icecube trays, n hot glue it into a cute box 💗
Awesome idea for saving dried up tubes of paint - it never occurred to me to cut them out!
Hi Jess, great video as usual, I just put up my first UA-cam video and listed you as one of my inspirations in the video. Your tips are always helpful and like the calmness in your voice it's very soothing. Thank you for being you.

so relaxing and fantastic information . thank you .and a side note I LOVE those nails
this is so therapeutic to watch
watching this (and hearing your narration!) destressed me, relaxed and inspired😇
Love the dried paint tip!

Same, i just got the meeden 24 watercolor paint and i'm looking for tips on how to use it better.. I wasn't sure about the same thing
Hello yes you just add a couple of drops of water and they work like normal if dried
I'm still new to watercolors so this is really helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for the great information. So helpful to those of us just starting out.
I loved this video! Rainbows are so beautiful :)
A MacK's Life aren't they though :) I must admit my apps on my phone are color coordinated as well
Studio Jess I appreciate that 😅😅😅 That's amazing
ahhh so therapeutic ^_^
Emma Thrussell ta Emma! 🤗
Need that light blue!!!
Always squeeze from the bottom to prevent paint getting stuck in the bottom and to prevent that weird gap.
Oh noooo i'm really loving how you edit all your videos.
This entire vid was so zen
Such a serene video :)
This was so helpful to see you do this. Thank you!!
one of my favorite things about watercolor is if your paint dries out it’s no big deal and it’s not wasted
*warning* if you don't you use your tubed watercolors for awhile after putting them in the pans they do start crack and look like a dry desert. It doesn't affect the color or use that I know of though.
Lol My eyes went straight to the Lukas Cobalt blue! Thanks for linking it!
i love your videos, this one was super calming :) and your nails are (were) indeed fabulous!
Wow! Watercolor is the best 😉
Thanks for sharing your experience. Is there any effect in the quality of artwork, if I will put my paint in my pallete and then use it late?
What is this really great shining lukas turquoise paint? Can you give me the exact name? I think I neeeeeeeeeeed it ^^
FarbCafé sure! It's fabulous - Lukas Cobalt Turquoise 1168 🙌
FarbCafé I was going to ask the same!!
FarbCafé hey guys!! im a starting yt acc and i would appreciate it A LOT if yall could check it❤️ thx!
Where can I buy this color ? I don't find it...
It's super strange how they don't show what pigments are in the paints, even on their own color charts, I though they might have been interesting but now I won't buy them.
Hi jess, I love the oder of the rainbow u used guess who is the best art you tuber ever read second word : )
Julia H.B this has truly been a game changer ~ it really is a hustle! I had a ceramic plate I was using but it would get muddy/dusty so fast. 😘
Either way I really enjoyed the video 😊
this is super inspiring me to make my own palette haha i'm actually going to buy one and put my paints in it!
So aesthetic I love it
Hi Jess ^_^ Your nails look rad.
pigknit thanks 🙏 I just had to cut them for bouldering (my drug of choice lately) and I miss them! 🙃
First off your nails are super mesmerizing LOL so beautiful! Secondly I really loved all the colors in your palette! Do you have a list/roundup of all the colors in it with the swatches next to them? I'm about to hit up the store soon for some fun new watercolor paint additions to my collection haha
thanks for showing this, I haven't work with watercolors yet, but definitely is in my list for the future :), Is so good to now this things now :)
ByBeckCR oh I adore watercolors, they take a bit of time to get used to, but they're so dreamy to work with. Let me know how it goes!
Brilliant! Did you decide eventually to label the swatch card as well? (Sorry! OCD acting up!☺)
I need to get good browns and light blue possibly turqoise
I didn't know you could squeeze out watercolors in a tube in pans to dry and then use them as pan water colors :O neat!
Gouache has similar properties to watercolours, so you can do that with gouache too.
I gotta ask, what is that bright blue? It is just so mesmerizing
I think you mean the Lukas Cobalt Turquoise?
Great video! It makes me want to paint too. But first I better reorganize my palette.
Wonderful vid!
Sooo satisfying
Did the same only labeled the names and numbers under the paint swatch, finished by sealing it in plastic to stay dry.
Loved the video I just bought my first ever tube paint and I was wondering how long dose it normally take to dry in the palette?
Cam's world 2days in the sun
your videos are so so positive! really inspiring (': 💙
Megan Arts oh thank you so much Megan that's such a lovely thing to hear... 😊
Could you please tell me what that golden yellow shade is you painted at 7:21? I would love to know!
excellent video. Thanks
Thanks for this video. Could you please tell me what color is 5th in the top row at 7:11? It's the bright turquoise-y color. Thank you so much :)
When you put your watercolours in the little half box do you let them dry (maybe freeze them) and then put them into the palette box?
Because I really want to do this myself.
Cool! And inspiring. That's a great palette. ( :
What are the best basic 8-16 watercolors that you would put in a simple palette? I know that you need your primaries to mix and get other colors... What color going from must have to like to have would you recommend?
This video is so ASMR
Hi! While you were filming this, how did you get all the different angles? One angle is above, facing you, etc? Did you have multiple cameras or did you move them?
I had no idea I could set it up like this, I always just applied my tubes directly to a paint pan.
Great tips thanks!
Great video! Very helpful. Would it be the same process for gouache? I've also heard that you should do two layers of filling the pan, letting the first layer dry before adding the second. Is that completely necessary?
Hey that was really helpful❤..need more like these..going to subscribe!!
And I thought I was the ONLY ONE who forgets the watercolor in tubes' covers (??)
What’s better with tubes vs cakes?
Thank you for the tutorial. So helpful.
I wanna learn to use watercolors, they’re so pretty lol 😊
Super helpful, thaaaank you!
So is arranging colors dark to light a typical way to organize? Are there other methods?
Newbie here with a question I just received all my materials and I set up my palette but how long does it take for the paint to actually dry in the half pans ? I left them out over night and there still fresh
How long do the watercolor take to harden, I am new to watercolor and gouache? Thanks
Thanks for making this. I learned a lot :)
