He is fine. He offers another viewpoint other than the one S'poreans are wrapped up in, understandably because of the motherland influence. He is frank and refreshing on his take of the diplomatic game. He makes a lot of good points about the chaos in the ASEAN sea. What is the point of building up atolls into military bases and a 9/10 dash line close to the maritime borders of other ASEAN countries and worst of all taking on India? A peaceful neighbour would not do these things.

Very interesting analysis on China from Bilahari Kausikan and very partial to the Western narrative. The gist of it is total opposite from Kishore Mahbubani's. And Lizzi Lee, just nods her head and did not ask critical questions. This interview could have been better.

George Yeo knowledge of China's history is impeccable and his views is often spot on and accurate. Bilahari Kausikan is too western in his views and the key reason he is in the FM is because Spore is also pro-western in our outlook as US investments in Spore alone is greater than China.
But Spore needs both US and China and we cannot afford to offend either parties as our rice bowl depends on US provide stability in the region and China's goods for our daily necessities and also our huge investments in China.
It was Deng who pass on his advice for chinese leaders to bid their time till they have gain strength to challenge US dominance, and Xi is the leader that is capable of doing it. Funny that Bilahari remembers the advise given to him by the vietnamese but that he is blind to not see that China too needs a leader than can stand up to the US. All the past Chinese presidents have not done so and suddenly Bilahari thinks Xi is an idiot! This already shows Bilahari understanding of China is limited and I dont think he is qualified to even give his 2 cents.

    • @mengsiongkheng113

George Yeo’s alma mater is Cambridge and Harvard. He is a Chinese Singaporean. Kausikan’s father is a Tamil Brahmin from India and mother a Peranakan. I don’t know how much of a Chinese culture and language he learned from his mother.
George Yeo operates at a much higher level on many fronts and varied sectors including university Chancellor, links to the Vatican, Commercial and Minister in Singapore.
There is no comparison between both.
A closer comparison would be Kishore Mahbubani, but here again Kishore is widely recognised.
I would look to George first and then Kishore for insights or analysis into China; not Kausikan. Sorry.

all you idiots here are commenting how Bilahari is bias and pro western and how george yeo is impeccable. On the other hand, there are idiots who are critical of george yeo and praise bilahari. I say, all of you have lost it. Because with your very comments, it already exposes your bias and you only want to hear things that you agree with - which is the real danger in today's world, living in an echo chamber. I listen to bilahari, george yeo, kishore and i agree with some of their points and not others. If you listen to Bilahari carefully, he is not exactly pro-western and likewise if you listen carefully to george or kishore, they are not exactly anti -western. The more important question is...who is the next generation of equivalent Singaporean thought leaders like them? People in their 40s and 50s, inside and outside the PAP government.

Always bias person who accuse other of being bias. Such a weird phenomenon.
Chinese diplomat has been acting very rude and demanding to host government. In “how to think about south east Asia,” he told a story where Chinese diplomat demands hotel that already assigned to other countries diplomat. (1 hotel: 1 country)
He suggested that this behavior has shifted since Xi Jinping gained evermore supreme power which implies that Wang Yi changes of behavior is influenced and demanded by Xi.
Also, he is nowhere to be found now. :)

Good info on geopolitics, but I noticed he is more critical on President Xi policy. I am wondering why he got a negative impression of President Xi? US former presidents, especially Obama, Trump's and current Biden's administration, also got fair shares of making mistakes by targeting China rise.
I have great respect for Kishore Mahabuni he got a better understanding of China history and also the US political system. If Bilahari Kausikan had stayed long in China and doing geopolitical studies there, he would understand China better and less critical of President Xi policy towards the West.
In this chaotic geopolitics, the world needed a strong China to stand up against the US and its allies. Else, the US will be the world sole economic and military superpower and can bully other countries by imposing sanctions on trade and technology and controlling the world finance. All trades must be done in US dollars.

I feel sorry for Singapore that it has these clowns in its diplomatic corp. His narrative is so western centric (eg calling Chinese diplomats wolf warriors), so representative of the crop of third generation leaders that's highly influenced by the west. He is very assuming to think that he represented the voices of Singaporeans. He's a typical "leader" in Singapore whose thoughts are shaped basically by information and knowledge harvested from western exposure and education. I sensed a tinge of lack of self confidence in his demeanor, especially when he bashed the Chinese diplomats. I find this unprofessional of a person who claims to be a retired diplomat. He came across as trying to show that he is above the Chinese diplomats, who are "wolf warriors" so he claimed. (This is very much in alignment with the western propaganda circles and it is hence not difficult for the audience to discern where he's coming from).
His perception of Chinese diplomatic conduct and behavior is so lopsided and biased (eg "the Chinese diplomats are only concerned about answering to Beijing") that it makes one wonder what sort of people are running Singapore currently? Does he represent the current thinking in the Singapore cabinet? Is this why Singapore seems to behave like a western city state despite it being located in Asia?

    China
Frank Fukuyama, the political scientist, call the Chinese system "responsive authoritarianism". The largest public opinion Survey Company in China is used, not just by the central government, but also by the city government, provincial government, down to the most local politicians of neighbourhood districts, conducting surveys all the time to determine the needs of the people so that work can be carried out to fulfil their needs. This is the mechanism use to be responsive to the demands and thinking of the people. The Western way of elections, after elections, after elections is not the Chinese way. It’s not by accident that China is able to lift 800 million Chinese out of poverty in one generation.

China has to be very active in the seas around her because she is surrounded by USA military bases and China is especially afraid of American submarines. To a large extent, aircraft carriers are sitting ducks, but not so the submarines. Little wonder that china is so adamant in her protection of her position in the South China Sea.

This is a paranoid view and not good for healthy relationships. Conflict is not good for anyone, irrespective of big or small, powerful or weak. After all economic consideration is more important in the present global scene. China has developed dramatically but has not blended with the rest of the world and one of the reason is the language barrier. I doubt the Chinese leaders can speak English and translation cannot convey the meaning of a conversation. The subtle message in communicating in the same language is distorted if not completely lost.

He should go to Philippines to help Marcos with his ideas rather than trying to promote US's style of democracy in Asia. The issue is why did he served Singapore which had been described by US as a "dictatorship"? As usual talks are free but surely he should try to lead Philippines to greater glory based on his ideas.

While i agree with many of the things he said, but he also sees things from the ASEAN side. He is not a chinese and he doesnt knkw how the chinese feel about certain things. For example, it ISNT entitlement for the chinese to say that we have arrived and deserve the place we made for iurselves in the world, regardless of the century of humiliation or not. China is what itbis today because of the policies china made and how china is developed. Even if china didnt proceed it this way the US will still supress china to no end, just like another singapore diplomat said, by the words of kishore mahbubani, thats what the world #1 power would do to the world emerger #2 power. And china and Russia need each other at this point in time, could they have not said they are friends with no limitations, maybe and maybe not. But that is nexessary to counter the west, especially the US. Why do u think the US is running around the ASEAN region and tried to gain alliances, to the point where she asked/ forced the ASEAN nations to pick side, which china didnt do no such thing. Lastly, not sure where he got his figures from, the US doesnt invest more in the ASEAn regions than china does. 30 years ago he is right but def mot now. So not saying he is so wrong, but his assessment is also biased or should i say more of a west narratives and mindset. And wang yi is damn good diplomat, he does what china needs and if itbis wold warrior kinda diplomat then so be it. A singaporean diplomat cant compare to a chinese one, different history and different place in the world. Wang is at least at his level at least if not better!

1st of all, I m not a fan of Kausikan.
Incredulous that he called then FM an idiot n SecGen Xi an Emperor!!
The way USA is behaving towards China leaves China with little choice but to b tougher n firmer in its diplomatic language.
USA has overstayed its welcome playing the great defender of free world n a FAIR competitor.
It has to protect its own Uno Superpower position gained since WWII. I accept that.
However, forcing its allied to gang up n bully China e.g. the Netherlands companies can't sell to China becoz their products/services/solutions contain some USA patents is REMINDING the Chinese of the 100yrs humiliation at the 'barbaric Western powers' in Qing dynasty time.
WHAT CAN CHINA do in SEA n the world:
    1. it should take the position that the rumoured vast resources in the South China Sea r to b shared with related SEA countries.
In one stroke it will make many friends.
    2. stop talking about all Chinese r the same as China Chinese. This many b true right after WWII where many poor Chinese fr the mainly left to seek a better life in SEA countries n around the world.
Today's many r the 2nd or 3rd generation that know themselves as e.g. Singaporean Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, Canadian Chinese, etc.
Maybe for the RECENT waves of migrants fr China in the last 20yrs, New citizens of the host country may feel that mainly China is their motherland. Another hot topic for another time?
    3. having seen how USSR dismemberment did to Russia, China will not, cannot, let that same pathetic fate happen to them. Otherwise, the leaders who lost it will b cursed forever in Chinese history.
That's WHY it has to take a hardliners on Taiwan, Tibet n Xinjiang.
    4. the USA is so desperate to keep its Hegemony position that some of its traditional allies r pushing back. e.g. Saudi Arabia n China, some oil trade in non-USD, smart Chinese move on Russia-China 'no limit' treaty with NO Military pact, etc.
USA will not b able to bully its allies to go along to protect USA Hegemony at their expenses.
    5. China has been pushing for the World as a Common Village n has not invade any countries unprovoked .
People hv to decide is China relatively less interventionist vs. the hegemonic USA that had changed foreign governments many time n started foreign wars many times?
Peace to the world n Kausikan definitely DIDN'T talk respectfully about others when calling Wang Yi an idiot n Xi an Emperor!
