I have three ASP880s in my studio. I also have API, Millennial, and Phoenix Audio preamps.
The ASP880s are outstanding preamps. They’re 3-dimensional, versatile, have lots of headroom, and the converters are also outstanding. These preamps are underated and are incredibly priced. I contacted Audient to praise they’re ASP880 and humbly suggested to them that they should change the color of the unit to black to make them more visually appealing.
I can’t recommend the ASP880s enough.
Hey ! I have an RME BABYFACE pro fs audio interface and looking for an External Microphone Preamp. Should I consider ASP880 ? Or would you recommend something else ? Would you recommend stretching my budget and get an external mic preamp that provides more value for your hard earned money ? Need it for home studio recording. Thank you so much 🙏
Yep! I've had an 880 for about 2 years now. Absolutely love it.
@@Aditya_Paliwal_9 Can't go wrong with an 880 if your interface has an ADAT in. It's seriously top notch. I also have a pair of RND shelfords and still use the 880 every time I track. It's just clean and 3 dimensional.
I don't even need to listen. The asp880 looks more vintage and analoggy with cool looking lights and knobs and therefore sounds better. You can use your ears if you want but they will ultimately deceive you. Plus it costs more and that also means it sounds better.
Haha. Lol
this is the way :D
🤣🤣🤣🤣 gears1uts in the building.
It's true. I've spent way too much of my life on those forums.
I listened on a pair of DT990 headphones and I couldn't really tell a difference. That may be UA-cam compression, but its close. This is a great comparison for anyone looking for a 8 channel interface, thank you.
The difference is minimal. Glad it was helpful. High res audio going on my website tomorrow am (I didn’t have time today, sorry).
Being a drummer, I bought the EVO16 primarily for smartgain feature. I know focusrite has come out with a similar feature but you can't beat Audient's price point for the quality.
Wish Audient would make an Single channel AsP pre like they did with the Mico. I like the sound of the Audient pres over Apollo X6 and Twin X pres even with emulation its overkill for my current situation to use 8 mic pres . Maybe 500 series would be good too.
I have literally suggested that exact idea to them today 🤣🤞
I have too!
Surprisingly big difference between the two! Much preferred the ASP880. More vibrant and more depth. In terms of sound there's no doubt it's the best one. But as you say, autogain is a huge timesaver for a self recording artist. I've been bugging UA to implement it in the Apollo for ten years now.
Yeh, it’s a toss up between the two. It’s those pesky incremental returns - are they worth the convenience trade off?
I think both are great. If you're on a budget, want convenience, or both, EVO is great. If you still don't mind doing gain by hand and possibly more tonal options, ASP880. Both sound slightly different, but not by a whole lot. Regardless, most people would use analog plugins or hardware anyways, so it's gonna color the sound regardless.
Both. I have the ASP 880 and use it mainly as my 8 inputs tied to a Motu 24 AO to my console but I need another 8 I/O for aux channels on my console so....... Evo looks like it will do just fine!
I never understood the design choice of having input 1 and 2 only available on the front of the unit. But I do love the Audient pre amps and use the id14mkII in my daily work 😀
Yeh, having front and back for the XLR, at least, would be helpful but the cost adds up and I think it’s at a really good price point atm.
@@EdThorne you got a good point
Because 1&2 are also instrument inputs. It's that simple. The all in one musician/producer/engineer doesn't have to fumble around the back of the unit when laying down a DI'd guitar track or plug a vocal mic in.
What I noticed straight away was the SP8 sounded more "muffled". On a second listen seemed to have more of a thump in the deeper bass at the expense of the 880s openness in the lower mids. You mentioned clearer top end on the 880s, and that probably contributed to the impression.
There’s a clear difference in depth between fully analog and digitally controlled preamps (and speakers IMO).
ed, first off thank you so much for the content. ive been finding all sorts of value on your channel for the last couple years. i got an id 44 mk 2 about 6 months ago. i just ordered the sp 8 to expand my i/o for the new wes audio gear i got about a month ago. this audient gear is a steal. when i got my id 44 it sounded like i got all new monitors thanks to the awesome converters. for the price this audient gear should be illegal. i know ua gear has been the standard for a long time and i almost went that route. but after following your reviews and the facty that computers are so powerfull now its hard not to think this audient gear isnt an awesome choice.
Amazing. I’m so glad the videos have been helpful and you’re happy with your gear 🙂🤘
Comparisons like this is ok and all, but in a full mix, would anyone be able to hear any difference? That should be the most important thing to test.
I was listening on some crappy headphones and couldn't really hear any difference. And based on conclusion in video and on comments here its not much difference between the two. Based on that I'm struggling to se why anyone wouldn't choose the SP8.
Auto-gain is nice but the best feature of the SP8 as far as I'm concerned is the ADAT input which can be routed to the analog outputs.
Yeh, it’s a full I/O unit!
@@EdThorne Actually, it gets even better because the only other eight-channel ADAT DAC on the market that I'm aware of is the Aphex 141B, which costs about the same as the SP8 and doesn't have preamps. Also it uses a DB25 output which can be a drag. Depending on your POV, if you're on the market for an 8-channel DA to run headphones or analog outboard then the SP8 is easily the best deal going.
So which one did you sell? Also is there a difference in the line outs?
I appreciated the sound of the 880 more, but they both sound usable to my ears.
The variable impedance switches give it the advantage for sure.
Compare the converters and pres to the Apollo x rack I hope to be expanding please
Ed, did you forget to post the link for MAutoAlign and video?
I did - good shout, thank you for the reminder. Will post now. Check back in 5 mins 🙂

Cantas muy bien... Me encantó el sonido del Neve, tiene más cuerpo... Pero los Golden age son bastante tentadores por lo económicos 😅 contra ese neve
This is cruel... I record drums via a Soundcraft Signature 22mtk. This is allright but nothing special so i want to look for the next step. I keep saying to myself that there's not a very noticable difference between the sp8 and the ASP 880 but there is... By a landslide! The depth on that kick is the biggest. And idd the clarity on the overheads... I will use the EVO16 as an interface, but i surely are going to buy 2 of those ASP880's! That's gonna cost me double than what i had in mind:(. Maybe i'll find some used ASP800's. That'll do.
That analoge line out via subd25, is that parallel to adat out or do i have to choose one? So i can use my mixer for monitoring:).
How big would the difference be in a final mix? Will it even be possible to tell on an average stereo or headphones (many people use AirPods etc)? Or is only those with High end hifi systems or headphones that will be able to tell? Will it be worth the money? I might be way off here but just a thought. I think often people are too hung up on A/B'ing stuff soloed. What is the actual difference in its final form should be the most important thing imo.
ASP clearly sounds better in A/B after multiple listenings.
Bugger. Because the newer unut is more convenient form factor
did you download the raw files ? When you switch between the two randomly it's... less obvious
ed whats your thoughs on the id44 mkii converters ad/da vs apollo twin x or the high end end apollos sound wise
I think you’ll struggle to hear a difference but I haven’t A/B’d them side by side.
@@EdThorne thank you for replying and thanks for the information that help alot in my decision making
Id44 totally smokes the apollos, uad has some of the worst, grainy sounding conversion out there
Both are awesome sounding but the auto gain kills the other....!!!!
For me recording on my own it does, yeh.
No phase flip on the evo?
You can access this in the Evo Control app
Great video, Ed!
Thanks, Mike 🙂🤘
So which one that will you keep?😁
Did I not say at the end? I was slightly vague tbh. But likely the SP8.
Do a blind test. The higher price isn't always the best.
These are very close aren’t they?! The ASP has the advantage I think but only due to the optimised impedance settings (and maybe depth in the low end).
@@EdThorne Very true. Another YT'er tested the EVO16 against his interfaces that reached over 9 grand in cost...and damned if you could tell a difference. Incredible times we live in now, eh?
Thanks for killing my resell value 😂
I’m in the same boat 😂 Hence I’m selling now.
Way less detail in the sp8 drums...
THE ASP880 killed the SP8 I'm a sound engineer. I heard plain as day the ASP880 Had alot of depth and clarity and when you switched to the SP8 alot of the sound disappeared. The depth was gone, the clarity was gone.. I didn't like SP8 at all somebody new starting out it might be a good fit. But for someone with a developed ear, no way... 🙂👍
did you download the raw files ? When you switch between the two randomly (no on the beat) it's... less obvious
ASP880 sounds way better to me
hmm ASP880 blow out SP8
my doubt is if i want compressor in every chanel,do i have to buy four dual comprresors for every chanel, and wich external compressor do you recomend the best
