His and 311's are the best. It's gotta be a metal snare, not as tall as usual. Tuning matters also.

Stanier tuned it very high and extremely tight to cut through the dense layers of guitar. Those kevlar heads helped too. His snare tuning when Helmet first started was fairly standard.

@@redghettosun Yes used a similar technique on Owner of a Lonely Heart, although it was against the wishes of the drummer (Alan White). Apparently the producer (Trevor Horn) had snuck in and re-tuned the snare on him while he was away so it fit in the track better.

Oh many can they just don’t. Blast beat is silly though. I can’t stand blast beat, it’s so overdone in some bands. It’s hard to do I’m sure, but it sounds stupid when you hear it over and over and everyone else is doing it too. Boring.

Okay, I will share a loved memory of mine. I was about 13 and my dad had just gotten out of prison. He bought an old 70s all black Ford Bronco and put 4 15 inch speakers in the rear and smaller mids and tweets throughout. Rockford Fosgate throughout. So, here we were rolling around Seattle and the first song I heard was from Helmet, I believe it was the strap it on album. That was also the first Album my dad gave me when he got out, that and a set of Koss headphones with a Koss tape player. Some nights I would fall asleep listening to the album. Thanks for being part of my memories Helmet. It just would not have been the same without you.

Betty is the literally THE VERY BEST album EVER. I dare anyone to find a better album than Betty. Kudos to Helmet for making this sick, sick, album and still relatively unknown work of art. I get chills. That's when you know it's good music. You get the chills. Still a regular 30 years later. All albums should be compared to this as the gold standard.
Here's a small list of some of the albums that Betty beat out (IMO) to earn the "Jeff G all time best album". Take it as a big fucking compliment to Helmet (much deserved).
    Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
    Metallica - Master of Puppets
    Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits
    Yothu Yindi - Tribal Voice
PJ Harvey - Rid of Me
The Sugarcubes - Here today, tomorrow next week
    Jose Feliciano y Amigos
    Peter Tosh - Mama Africa
    Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
    Alice in Chains - Dirt
    David Byrne - Rei Momo
Johnny Cash: American IV: The Man Comes Around
Sylvia Telles - The voice I love
    Soundgarden - SuperUnknown
Roots Radics - Forward Ever, Backwards Never
The Cranberries - Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we
    Beck - Guero
Bad Religion - Against the grain
    Pennywise - self titled
    Bad Brains - Quickness
    Concrete Blonde - Free
Ziggy Marley - Tomorrow People (hahaha - wtf do I always call it that - it's like a thing with this album - Conscious Party (say it again, write it down this time))
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven ( a 9 on the Betty scale, and Betty's one of those long tail scales. you know most shits in the middle.)
All sick albums start to finish, but Betty climbs to the top. It MUST BE listened to loud.
Funny thing is it seems that Meantime got all the radio attention. It was pretty good and all. But it was like a 6 on the Betty scale.
Update: I was thinking of original post and why I bothered. It came to me quick. More than anything, it's a big thank you to Helmet for creating this piece of gold. It has definitely helped me in my life. big time. many many times. that's how good betty is.
Here are a few more albums you beat out so you know the relevance of the compliment cause I definitely consider myself a music lover.
Black Uhuru - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    White Zombie - Astro-Creep 2000
Bob Marley and the Wailers - Babylon By Bus
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Isley Brothers - Winner take all (Winner takes all - you take your pick)
    Gorillaz - Demon Days
Wailing Souls - Fire House Rock
    Half Pint - Greetings
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
    Widespread Panic - Space Wrangler
Widespread Panic - Aint Life Grand
    Moby - Everything is wrong
John Parish and PJ Harvey - Dance Hall at Louse Point
Peter Tosh - Wanted Dread & Alive
    Santana - Caravanserai
Bob Marley & the Wailers - Uprising
Jimi Hendrix - Kiss the Sky
    Led Zeppelin II
Dead Kennedy's - In God We Trust, Inc
The Doors - Waiting for the Sun
Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
The SugarCubes - Stick Around For Joy
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her
Another tremendous set of albums that are amazing the whole way through - None beats Betty tho. If I was to write an article on Betty, the first word that would come to mind would be "Gripping". Once you turn Betty on, and turn it up, it has you. It has you. And you're good with that cause it's like a blanket to your soul. It's a rock to lean on when needed. And anyone who doesn't recognize any albums on this list, they are all gold. just pick one you haven't heard and go for it. This album list is (obviously) open source. Anyone can feel free to use it in any way if desired - just don't forget to include Betty on the list cause it's not actually in these lists since those are albums it beat out.
Update: You knew it was coming.
A few more albums Betty had to beat to get the top spot:
    311 - Music
    Leftfield - Leftism
    Grateful Dead - Mars Hotel
Polvo - Celebrate the New Dark Ages (better than you think)
And why are some totally amazing albums left off. Over the top songs. Too many bands wreck albums with over the top songs. Looking at you Pepper, Dead Kennedy's, Prodigy.
Update: Thought of a few more you had to get past including some techno (none beat Betty yet):
    Phish - Billy Breathes
    Therapy - Nurse
Juan Atkins - Magic tracks deep detroit volume two (dj comp)
Juan Atkins - Wax Trax! MasterMix - Volume 1 (dp comp)
Ultimate Reggae - 20 classic reggae riddims (comp)
Keoke - all mixed up (dj comp)
    The Orb - UF Orb
The Chemical Brothers - Dig your own hole
XMix - Issue Twenty One - 1994 (dj only comp)
Josh Wink - United DJs of America - Volume 3
    Kickin Mental Detergent
    Dave Matthews - Crash
    Bad Brains - Rise
Ustad Sultan Khan - Sarangi - The music of india
The Untouchables - Wild Child (ska)
Long Beach Dub Allstars - Right Back
    Juan Atkins - Legends - Volume 1
Bruddah IZ - Alone in IZ World
Josh Wink - Profound Sounds Vol 1
There are plenty of other 5 star albums out there, but this is a kickass list of albums and comps you beat out. These are all 5 star albums, but not 10s on the betty scale. Betty is really the only 10 on the betty scale. Only 5 star albums are even included to be compared. Untouchables - WildChild and Chemical Brothers - Dig your own hole are the only albums on this list that have a few songs I don't really like but still gave the album 5 star because they are so damn good at parts.
Widespread Panic - Til the Medicine Takes (you knew it was comin' ...)
Okay, I have it down, I think:
Top 5 albums of all time, in order:
    1) Helmet - Betty
    2) Metallica - Master of Puppets
    3) Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
    4) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
    5) Santana - Caravanserai
Somebody out there's probably reading this shit, even if it's just the cops!
    ---
OK, we're continuing through to a top 10
    6) David Byrne - Rei Momo
    7) Concrete Blonde - Free
    8) PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her
    9) Yothu Yindi - Tribal Voice
    10) Pennywise (self titled album)
    - someone's reading this shit, I know it to be true.
Update: Rei Momo moved a notch up after another recent listen. Sorry Peej, it's that good. It's that damn good.
OK, it's all locked in at this point. Jeff G all-time top 10 album list.
Now, time to lock in "La Crema" - all albums above plus the following 3:
    Citizen Fish - Flinch
    Widespread Panic - Everyday
    PJ Harvey - Dry
    Helmet - Strap It On
OK, if I post here again, you can stab me.
There are tons of 5 star albums not on "La Crema".
This is just shit I like.
I only got 1 like on this post, lol
    I guess I got a beating coming ...
Had to comment to replace Beastie Boys as they drop the n-bomb a few times, and that excluded it - for certain.
    I'm replacing with:
Jimmy Cliff - The Ultimate Collection (I know, I know - a comp? -- yeah, a comp - it's good all the way through)
I'm gonna have to take a flogging I guess ... Back for the update (of the top 10 list). I personally believe Concrete Blonde's Free is the best female album ever made. It's just phenomenal. It had to be on top 10.
And another for the greatest album list while I'm here (sneaking it in).
Sandy Denny - Rendezvous - tho she has many other great ones too
I guess I'm in for some beatings ...
A few that just had to be on this list
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
    Peter Tosh - Equal Rights
Peter Tosh - No Nuclear War
And the top 10 got updated again.
It's a legend of a list, you must admit
Oh, who am I kidding, I can't stop this list ... Flog me if you want
The Sundays - Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
Edie Brickell & New Bohmeians - Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks (too epic to leave off - all the way through).
TSOL - Revenge - how could I leave it off
    Jane's Addiction - Nothing's shocking
